| A series that starts strong but ends weakly. Why? Because this story contradicts itself. This series is more like a deduction than a mystery. Because there are more thinking instead of solving cases. At first there were solving cases, but then it just turned out to be a thinking game for games.
At first Spiral will grab your attention. It starts off with the story with Ayamu Narumi. Basically he's just chilling at school trying to find the whereabouts of his brother. Along with his sister-in-law Detective Madoka Narumi. The mystery starts off with the Blade Children.
Now what is the Blade Children? I don't know either, because the story never tells you. It's very stupid to have a question that's never answered. Not to mention that's the theme of the whole entire series. They give you one clue and that clue is that they are cursed. Okay why are they cursed and what is this curse? Why are they being hunted? The story never explains it for you. So it just left me hanging there.
Now what's with the hunters? What are they and why do they hunt the Blade Children? Never answers the question.
Another question is where is Ayumu's brother? Yes they keeps saying he's related to the Blade Children? In what way? They never answer the question again. What's even worse is that the Blade Children don't even know where he is. However his brother kept saying this he is the hope of the Blade Children. Okay how is he the hope for the Blade Children? Never answers that question. Okay now if he is the hope of the Blade Children, why are the Blade Children trying to kill him? Okay this they answer, trying to get courage from. A spark of his own insight that doesn't make him like his brother.
The last question really contradicts the story. Okay, Kanon the big boy of the Blade Children. He's the hope of all Blade Children, because he teaches them hope and also teaches them how to defend themselves against the hunters. That's great and all, but why does he join up with the hunters to kill the Blade Children then? Why did he contradict himself? Why didn't the Hunters kill him? He is a Blade Children after all. Another important question that leaves the audience hanging.
What makes Spiral a good anime at least is the Character. Especially the main protagonist Ayumi Narumi, because basically he's a person who keeps following the footsteps of his brother's shadow. OF course this is not intentional. He tries to avoid anything similar to him however his body just reacts to it. What makes him even more stressed is that when he's com pared to his brother. His brother is just a perfect detective. Overall i think that Ayumi is just a laid back person who somehow just gets involved with the Blade Children.
Next we haveKyono Yuizaki a very energetic/noisy girl who runs the newspaper club. She gets involved with the Blade Children, except not as much as Ayumu. She basically is the girl who gathers information for Ayumu, a genius as well. She gets attracted to him from his intelligence after he solved the first case.
Eyes Rutherford a very mysterious character. Mostly the leader of the subdivision of the Blade Children. What makes him a unique character is because of his past. However he doesn't really do much in the entire series.
The Blade Children are some students who are missing one rib bone. That's interesting and has something to do with the curse. But whatever since they don't answer that. What makes the Blade Children interesting is that they are pretty smart. They give you good mind games that fool the audience pretty well.
Another good aspect of the series is the sound. They got good voice, which gives them really good and noticeable emotions. Not to mention their personality as well. The sound for the scenes is good as well, however it does get repetitive. The OP is okay not good not bad just okay.
Well this anime was quite enjoyable until the ending. Because it never answered any question really. It just leaves the audience hanging asking 5 different questions. However what makes this series interesting is the mind games they give you. Very very clever mind games. However they use too much bombs though. Actually they probably used bombs in 90% of the games. Well that could get boring but it's the deduction that makes it amazing. So I would recommend this series to anyone unless they don't want to be clueless.

| Spiral is a mystery anime that falls short on some episodes and does well on the next episode. If I were to plot the intenseness of the storyline on a grid it would go up one episode and then down then up and down. Basically it means that you would watch one really good episode and then you would have to watch a boring episode and then after that you get a good episode. Get what I'm saying?
The animations are nice for an anime in 2002. Reminds me of Full Moon wo Sagashite, except that's one of my favorites. The character designs are good and that was the main reason why I watched this anime. Backgrounds are nice, but a little plain and the coloring felt like it should have been darker. Voice acting is fine. Background music is fine. OP song is annoying. ED song is decent. There's my quick run down on the anime's sound usage and soundtrack.
The story is quite good if you can get past the incomplete storyline and the confusing plot at some times. The mysteries are usually a hit or a miss. Either a really lame mystery that seems really dumb and obvious or sometimes it's really clever. I thought the beginning of the anime had better cases than the ones near the end.
The story is about these blade children who must be killed no matter what. And our main character Narumi Ayumu has to help them. But the blade children aren't so friendly either and they want to kill him too. So they set bombs and traps and stuff to try and kill them.
The characters are pretty good. Narumi Ayumu is the quiet silent type guy who is really smart and usually solves the mystery. Hiyoko is the sidekick and helps him in the cases. She mostly does research on her laptop and finds out the backgrounds of people and gives Ayumu the run down on what just happened. The blade children are all mysterious, but somehow I didn't like them at much. I didn't like Eyes for some reason.
If you can get through the ups and downs of Spiral then you will do just well with this anime. If you're looking for a more intense mystery anime then you should look somewhere else. For people looking for a more light hearted mystery anime then Spiral will do just fine.

| Spiral is a very enjoyable anime about human nature, the skill of deduction and belief in yourself. The premise is interesting, the characters are not half bad and although there is an "up-in-the-air" ending leaving more than a few unanswered questions, it's worth giving it a go.

| what happens when you read a good mystery novel only to find that the last page containing the ending had been torn off? Surely, anyone would head back to the bookstore for a refund. This is exactly how any viewer would feel by the time they reach the ending of this series.
They feel cheated by a non-conclusive ending. But let's take a look at the breakdown of this show.
The animation tends to vary quite a bit. There are times when the characters and the surroundings looked breathtaking (excellent lighting effects). However, you would find the animation to be rather inconsistent, with some characters looking rather awkward in some angles. Fortunately, it's not a issue since they were drawn nicely most of the time. Nevertheless, the character designs were very pleasing to the eyes and some of them would rank among my favorite character art/design of all time. All in all, the animation was decent and would definitely draw you into the world of spiral.
The soundtrack is excellent, I found the Op and Ed theme to be rather addicting once you listen to it a lot. Some people really hated the Op theme but it wasn't a issue with me. The bgm truly brings out the impact of the emotional scenes perfectly. The music kicks in just at the right time, especially when Narumi solves a major logical puzzle. It certainly makes those memorable moments unforgettable. (Watch ep 10 if you want to know what I mean)
Depending on the taste of the viewer, spiral can either be an excellent anime or a medicore one. The beginning was very promising, with Narumi running into a mysterious conspiracy concerning the elusive Blade Children, who were apparently experts in crimes. As the story goes on, the viewer would realize that the plot wasn't as straight forward as it seemed, since the Blade Children were actually running away from a bigger threat. Without giving too much of the story away, I could only say that the first fifteen episodes would probably have you on the edge of your seat, eager to find out the secrets behind each character's actions.
It is from here on that Spiral would take a crippling blow, story-wise. You see, Spiral doesn't exactly have an ending. All the intense questions that were thrown onto you during the show were never properly answered.
Narumi had some of the best character development throughout the story. Slowly, from a person who suffered from an inferior complex, he learns to appreciate his talents more instead of pursuing his brother's shadow. This constitutes one of the major themes in Spiral. "Walking the path less traveled" would be the perfect sentence to describe the theme it tries to convey. The three major blade children were excellent characters, which with their own problems and ambitions.
Due to the lackluster ending, one might find it hard to rewatch the series. On top of that, all mystery show seems to lose its suspence upon second viewing.
Anyone who enjoys drama and mystery should really pick this series up. However, if you enjoy nice conclusive endings then don't even bother watching this show. Read the manga, which has a more detailed storyline and an excellent ending.

| Spiral is not your typical, average mystery show. It is far more intriguing and thought-provoking with an interesting central plot that ties together all the mysteries. Despite its lack of proper closure, Spiral is an entertaining series and can be extremely refreshing from those typical anime series that focus on combat, physical superiority, magic, etc.
Animation:
Spiral has a top of the line animation. The characters were all well drawn and their design matched their personalities well. Overall, the animation matches the atmosphere set by the anime.
Sound:
Thank the OP for knocking down a point in this category. The opening is extremely annoying and although it can be catchy, it does not blend with the tone of the anime at all. However, everything else was superb. The ED, in comparison with the horrible intro, was beautiful and melodic. The musical score was brilliant as well. The theme song played at the resolution of each mystery was awesome. The voice actors also did well in capturing the essence of each character.
Story:
The story, although strong in the first 20ish episodes, breaks down in the end with a very vague, philosophical ending that refuses to answer many of the questions raised during the series. The plot of the Blade Children is interesting and engrosses the audience in the earlier stage of the plot. Who are the Blade Children? Why are they cursed? Why did Ayumu's brother disappear? Is he still alive? These important questions are never truly answered and background information given seemed like a teaser. Aside from the lack of proper closure, each case is well thought out and the deduction seems logical. There are times, however, when the case is resolved by pure luck or coincidence. Some of the cases, such as the game with the collared bomb, depends on the occurence of certain event or reaction which is all somehow predicted by our intelligent protagonist. In short, although most deductions are within line of reason, some stretch the game of probability. If you don't mind the somewhat vague ending, the story can be very enjoyable. Overall, the anime can be described as a trailer for the manga. According to some fansites, the manga explores these topics in great detail and answers many of the questions.
Character:
Well-done. Each character is developed well, especially our male and female leads. Ayumu is introspective and aloof teenage genius. This is well displayed through the use of flashbacks and certain events. Same goes for our eccentric and hyper sidekick Hiyono. At a first glance, Hiyono seems to be one of the stereotypical girl companion that encourages the protagonists here and there. However, Hiyono is just as important in solving each mystery and often serves as a compass of righteousness and reality. The Blade Children are also thouroughly developed. Although their true motives are uncertain, their actions match their personalities.
Value:
Spiral is one heck of a ride. It is intriguing and thought-provoking. Although the lack of strong resolution is a let-down, Spiral is a refreshing series.
Enjoyment:
Very enjoyable. I was often left in awe as Ayumu solved each case with such a flair. However, as it is a problem with any mystery story, there is not much replay value as the viewer already knows the secret behind each case.
Overall, Spiral would be one of the most intriguing series and one of the best if it had a more clear, resolute ending. Even without the proper closure, Spiral is an enjoyable anime that can entertain everyone.

| Spiral is different than most other anime. It's considered part of the mystery genre, but don't let that throw you off. Only the first two episodes feature normal mystery scenes. Past that, the anime starts to diverge into more insane, unrealistic stuff, but don't worry. It's still good. Every single one of the problems is tackled with an analytical approach that really makes the watcher think rather than that mindless, beat-em-up stuff that we see so often nowadays.
Basically, Spiral is an awesome, refreshing anime that departs from the cliche. Of course, the anime has a fatal flaw that you'll start to realize after you've hit the 20th episode or so and nothing's been explained. That's right. Spiral has no ending. You'll have to read the manga if you want to find out more.

| For a detective type of anime(as rickinzensphire mentioned), it's very good.. It has plot and good story.. It has good "human" emotions in it... It sucks the viewers to think too... It's very fun to watch^^

| Spiral ~Suiri no Kizuna~ has been a controversial but yet very interesting anime.
Controversial because, despite the numerous gems found here and there throughout the series, there are a bit of major flaws (one above all) that partially ruin what could have been a masterpiece.

| I became interested in Spiral from the manga. Being a sucker for mysteries, I fell in love, and had to go see the anime.
Spiral is basically a battle of wits. The main character Narumi Ayumu is a child genius who is living in the shadow of his brother. Long ago his brother had picked up and left, leaving behind only a vague clue about "Blade Children." Naturally, a strange murder occurs and Narumi and his grieving sister-in-law Madoka find themselves entangled in a mess concerning their missing brother/husband, and the story starts.
Spiral’s an anime with a lot of potential. It could have been an awesome anime, connecting several genres together. Still, it became one of my favorites, despite its flaws and horrendous ending.* It’s a intriguing, cool series that I enjoyed.
*Note: I heard that the series was supposed to be longer, but several of the people working on it died in a car accident, halting production. Or something like that, which is why the ending sucks so badly.

| A more plot oriented and character development, crazy-girl humor type Detective anime than Detective Conan.
Since this series is shorter than Detective Conan and it has an actual ending, i would recommend this anime to anyone interested in anime focused on deductions and murders with an semi-interesting underlying story, which doesn't seem to do much except further character development and lead the pacing of different mysteries. (Rather than Detective Conan's random cases that dont have a real connection between them)
Due to this focus on plot, this series is more of a traditional season anime where there is a direction. Also, the recurring theme of "Blade Children" means that you have to be interested in this story, or else the 'mysteries' don't really matter. In terms of pure deduction, this isn't really impressing. The situations and mysteries seem to take a back seat while the story is pushed forward.
I feel that Spiral makes things serious of matters that aren't really interesting. Like dressing up rotten salad with interesting tasting dressing, but in the end it is rotten... no matter how much it is made to look interesting...
Animation is kind of a bit comic. It isn't meant to show realism, rather I could easily see the same style of animation in some silly brainless love comedy. Because of this, I feel that this doesn't really match the anime that well...
In the end, this anime is limited in terms of pure deduction anime because of the story element that it tries to portray.

| I was never into mysteries so I've also stayed away from them until I found Spiral and fell completely absorbed in it. I loved the character designs and it was good to see a show that had the characters actually wearing modern clothes. But aside from that, the story itself was intriguing but some of the things just weren't solved for the amount of episodes it had. A second season is definitely in need, picking up from where it had left off and following the manga.
And just as a little note, for those who have watched this show and is dissapointed with the ending, I highly recommend reading the manga which goes on much, much further from the anime.

| Story in one sentence: a bunch of kids with cat-like eyes try to outsmart/kill the filled-with-angst main character (who is somehow the only one who could save them from some horrible fate) by setting up impossible traps that only his super intelligence and far-fetched logic can get him out of, while at the same time those same kids try to evade the mysterious Hunters intent on killing them.
You'll never know more than that. Not even where the Blade Children get their budget to set up all those bombs.
It's difficult to write a review for this anime. I'm greatly annoyed by the fact that we don't get any answers about who are the Blade Children, or what has become of Kiyotaka, the super smart, super skilled older brother of Ayumu.
I was also annoyed by the petty talk, like "if we believe in ourselves, destiny can be changed, blah blah"... Those are useless, empty sentences that mean nothing and don't make the story evolve, if taken out of context, which is precisely where we are standing as viewers: no context, no clues about what the hell is going on on the higher levels of the story.
Still, as a "mystery" anime, it's a good series filled with cute guys. Ayumu is kinda cool when he gets out of all those impossible situations.

| I really liked the art of this anime... one of the reasons why I watched it. And until now.. I still like it.
The animation is good. It's not that detailed and fascinating but it's appropriate enough. The sound is great. I love the opening song. I could play it over and over.
The characters are nice. They are unique, entertaining and fun. They have different qualities and engaging but not much development. But what pisses me off in this anime is the story. It even made me wonder if I have WASTED my time watching the anime. If story is just the basis, I'd say this is one of the worst anime I've watched.
The start was good, the anime was engaging, the plot was great and I could see a good "future". I kept on guessing what would happen..(and of course, I haven't guessed right) ..and was fascinated with the events. I liked all the mind-boggling play of logic and out-witting everyone. Even the mystery of the Narumi brothers caught me. But all of my "fascination" shattered as I reached the end.
NOTHING was answered. It's not even "open-ended" ... I'd say.. the whole anime was an "introduction". No rising action, no climax, no falling action and NO conclusion.
Most "open-ended" animes have "no conclusion" but Spiral did not even climax. It just introduced Ayumu's brother... his role? Not Explained. The Blade Children were introduced... Why are they cursed? Not Explained. Ayumu's sister in law's involvement with the police and the "happening" inside the department... relation? Not Explained. NOTHING was REALLY EXPLAINED. The whole anime just teased... and played with me then ended. PERIOD.
I could've appreciated it if there was a definite story. The start of the story was SO GOOD. If they need to exceed 26 episodes, why not? It's better to watch a long ang meaningful anime that a short, crappy trash of an anime that just fooled you all along masking itself as a good anime.
I won't watch it again... and I'm still wondering if this was really worth my time. So if you have other animes to watch... don't watch this. But if you are bored and watched all much better animes available and want something ENTIRELY different... I recommend THIS!

| AARRRGGGHHHH!!!! Where's the ending!!! Why do so many animes do this!! Don't explain what's wrong with the blade children, don't explain what's so great about Ayumu, don't explain his brother or the hunters or anything!! It's a pretty good show, marred by the fact that ABSOLUTELY NOTHING GETS EXPLAINED! The mysteries are quite interesting and fun to watch. The animation's nice (except the Eyes character is too common and Ayumu looks just like Jing in his yellow coat). The music's quite good but there's not too much variety. The individual stories are interesting but not very well linked together. I especially found it weird how all the Blade Children put all their hopes on Ayumu and then left. The characters are pretty good and quite well developed. If you like mysteries and cops in alleys type shows this is a good one. Just don't expect anything to be explained and a non ending ending.

| Overall, I enjoyed Spiral alot - I mean usually I'm really addicted to those type of anime series that settle on relationships between characters, but this was an exception because if it did have that romantic stuff, it would totally ruin the gneral mood of it all.
A really new thing for me - mystery but with well designed characters, cool up-beat music, and unique animation. I really liked the opening and ending songs.

| When I first started to watch this series I thought I was wasting my time. But after a few episodes I got hooked. Granted this series has one of the worst endings ever, in that nothing really is resolved and you realize that nothing really happened in the series... but the series makes up for that in a strong set of memorable characters who have a good chemistry with each other.
In addition, the story line is intriguing and suspenseful. I had read other reviews of this series and was aware that main plot questions never get answered, and I think knowing that made the series better for me.
Overall, I highly recommend. It most likely won't make your top 5 list, but you will love it just the same.

| A very good serie.
The animation and graphism are above average.
All the characters are interesting.
eDespite what a lot of people are saying, the ending is quite good. Even if some mysteries are not clearly explain, you just need to use a little your brain to find out the missing pieces.
The main idea of the anime is not to know if the blade childrens will be saved or not but if it worth to fight again their fate.
At the end of the anime every people have found his answer and it is the most important, the rest is secondary.

| Overall, this was an enjoyable and unique anime series. The main character is a depressed emotionally-distant teenage boy (Ayunami) who tries to find out what happens to his older brother who disappears all of a sudden. The series starts out as unique mysteries, but along the way it changes and becomes a good drama. Ayunami becomes involved with these mysterious kids known as the Blade Children, who are responsible for crimes. You'll admire Ayunami and his (sidekick-admirer)'s intelligence as they thwart the plans of the Blade Children and the Hunters, they are brilliant characters, and the anime was good, along with good character development and interesting plot twists......
However, its not perfect, for a couple of reasons. The biggest reason is probably its poor ending, it does not explain many of the myteries you encounter throughout the series....it has a sort of Evangelion-series type ending, except maybe worse......some of the decisions the characters make do baffle me a bit, there is no real conclusion, sort of a let's keep going and live with hope type ending......it wasn't horrible like say Scrapped Princess's ending, but it could have been better.....especially with a show with potential and unique....and the last puzzle Ayunami solves was kind of baffling....
Furthermore, I had some problem with some of the character relationships within the anime, for instance why Ayunami chose to assist the Blade Children, who are murderers...
Despite some flaws, the series is very interesting, its a great drama and the mysteries will have you wanting for more. i think its worth seeing despite its too open-ending......go see it........
Some of the puzzles are quite too exotic for the viewer.....but are quite entertaining to watch...
