A pretty bad gambling based anime. Leaves the viewer with no feeling of suspense or tension. Unlike Kaiji, where I literally sweat buckets for the characters as they put their life on the line, Legendary Gambler Testuya felt like Bambi in comparison. Like another reviewer mentioned, this is similar to Hikaru no Go... sure I felt like playing Go after watching it, but it was also episode after episode of useless opponents. Gambling isn't a tournament. It is life or death/win or bust -- and I totally felt none of this.

Unlike Hikaru no Go, this anime has some really uninteresting, not to mention ugly, characters. Once I saw that guy with the afro, I immediately stopped watching. I don't need another guy serenading and being a clutz next to Tetsuya. When the old man (Tetsuya's mentor) disappeared, I immediately lost interest (which was episode 7-8). Really, this anime is just plain uninteresting unless you love Mah Jong. But if you do love Mah Jong, all this anime teaches you is how to cheat, which in its own right is somewhat interesting, and it's somewhat interesting to see how cheaters go up against cheaters as they try to outsmart each other, but I felt there really just wasn't much on the line. No tension.

If you want to watch a really good, dark gambling anime, watch Kaiji. Tetsuya barely touches it with a 10 foot stick.

Rented this from a local video store, and it's a surprisingly decent show about mahjong. Like hikaru no go, I didn't think i'd like the series going into it because it was about mahjong, but I ended up enjoying it nonetheless. Kinda on the short side however, and the ending leaves gaping plot holes...but overall a decently done anime. I'd recommend it, but since you won't be able to find it now, you might as well check out hikaru no go instead.

The story and the characters were well designed. Animation reminded me of initial d with a mixture of grave of the firefly. It is a very fun anime to watch if you are into mahjong but even if you are not you'll still love it. Its like hikaru no go, even if you dont know how to play, you'll still enjoy it because of the story.
