| This was an enjoyable Patlabor movie, but the trailers ruined the suprises for me; as they kinda spoiled the whole movie with some important revelations.
The animation is excellent, the designs somber and realistic, it's a great piece of art.
The music was similar to that of the first Patlabor movies, though this time is was a lot more subdued and less noticable.
The Story was good, but like I said, the trailers spoil the most important moments; though I can't deny it was a well written movie with true moments of tension in it.
The lead characters are two detectives that are likeable and get decent development, as well as the "main" villaness, though nothing earth-shattering; most of the cast of Patlabor only gets cameos, with the exception of Gotoh, which does have a more active role.
In the end this was a good way to pass a rainy afternoon, and has enough "Patlabor" to make it part of the franchise, and it's interesting to watch the Patlabor world from another view.

| Since there are so many anime series out there it is the first time I heard about Patlabor. It was supposed to be a mecha anime where giant robots are used as policemen. I'm glad that these robots appeared only in the end and let the movie evolve as it should have.
It didnt matter anyway. I didnt know any of the characters involved in the originial series so their absence didnt bother me.

| I haven't seen neither the series nor any of the other movies, and from what I hear I'm glad I saw WXIII first. This makes a great first contact with the Patlabor universe.
The movie is a detective story, a quite complicated one. The plot is the kind where you have to watch very carefully and remember many details if you want to make sense of it later on. I watched it with several friends and we helped each other with the details, otherwise I might have had to watch it twice or come to the conclusion the plot was bad, which it wasn't.
The animation and drawing style are very good, in spite of the lack of 3D rendering or CGI effects.
About 3/4 of the movie is centered on the investigation and the characters. It's almost a drama in this respect. The characters are very well depicted and their interactions are interesting. The choice of partners, with the younger one being more quiet and calm while the older is more energetic and full of ideas, is also interesting.
I have to disagree about the plot being predictable. As I said, you have to put things together and pay attention, and either way if you forget it's a SciFi movie you'll be in for some big surprise at some point. I thought the mecha's were overdoing it a bit, but since this is a Patlabor movie I guess they had to have their moment in the spotlight.
Ironically, the movie would have been a tad better IMHO without the mecha scenes. They appear too sudden and their presence is too alien for the spectators who are unnacustomed to the Patlabor universe.

| It was better then the 2nd movie. Slow pace, but it kept me interested.
Graphics are best part of this anime! Bandai Visual sure know how to make life-like drawings. NO COMPLAINS there!
Sound was also very very nice. A little too quiet at times, but nothing bad there.
Story was weak. It tried to be mysterious, but the event at starting of the movie didn't matched/related to the main story towards the end so very clearly. What with giant fish and all? wierd story, somewhat unique plot, but weak.
Characters were ok. Many of regular patlabor pilots from series and movie1 were not introduced or in focus, but it was no big deal.
All in all, this movie could very well have used another name, no need to use Patlabor, as the only labors were present in last 5 min of movie!
Overall, it's an OK movie, but i doubt i'd ever watch it again unless i'm really bored.

| I had never seen any Patlabor material before seeing this movie and so i cannot compare it to the 1989 series and earlier movies.
Patlabor WXIII starts out very slowly as a detective movie with a series of mysterious murders around the Tokyo Bay. Although the premise seems intriguing at first, the way the progression of the story is made makes it feel even slower. Clues and answers are brought up to the viewer in such an obvious way, that it leaves the viewer with very little to think about. The story is still good, it's just not well scripted enough. The conclusion of the movie is far too predictable and none of the characters help picturing those predictable investigations as mysterious in any way, which would have been a big plus.
Most of the characters in this movie have very little background. This makes any prior Patlabor reference useless and also has the advantage of not confusing the first time viewer too much. I have to say, however, that most characters have very frigid personalities and show very few emotions. There isn't any dialogue performances in Patlabor and it is far from a thriller movie with screams only. This avoids any inconsistent annoyances in character psychology. There isn't enough material to begin with, so most characters are plain and simple.
Even with some average characters and story, i somewhat enjoyed the movie. The animation graphics are superb, although not the best, and the soundtrack matches the screenplay perfectly. That said, i don't think i would consider owning a copy of this movie. It's good enough for renting.
Final words: it's not that bad.

| This movie is good. Just like the first 2 movies it's most of the time (85%) story and only a small part (15%) action. And the action is mainly at the end of the movie.
The story is actually focused on a detective finding new clues on what happend. And at the end when they try to resolve the case, that's where the patlabors come in. You will only see patlabors for like 5 min at most.
But this doesn't mean it's a bad movie. The animation is top notch (was expected from a movie from 2002) and the story is top notch too. Even though you don't see anything of patlabors in it, it's still very interesting. There really wasn't a time in the movie that i thought it was boring, the story kept me hooked for the 100 min.
This movie was really good to me, but i can imagine that some people might not like it because of it's low action rate and very serious style.

| Its an anime that plays like a movie! Everyone should watch this movie, even if they don't like anime, the plot and presentation are just that good.
Despite being a mech series, this movie has stronger ties to a sci-fi genre with genetic engineering gone awry. The mechs play a minor role and I believe they are only seen in a small portion of the movie.
In fact, even the "monster" element of the movie comes second to the investigative nature of the departments detectives. At heart, this is a mystery, and a darn good one.

| I showed this anime to couple of my friends who doesn't like anime (they think anime is gay, full of overly-cute-and-cheesy big eyes characters and high pitched voices), and they said,"Damn man, this anime is tight."
It seems like most of you haven't seen the original Godzilla movie (the one made in 1950s). This movie relates a lot to the original movie, that Godzilla (or this cancer monster) is the creation of biological weapons, specificly nuclear weapons since US conducted extensive nuclear testing around Pacific Island during World War II era. Go see the original Godzilla movie and you'll notice a lot of resemblance to this anime (the first Godzilla movie, IMO, is the best one among its series. Very deep).
As the matter of fact, one piece of the conversation with Gotoh-san (in the amusement park) mentions that the US has a facility base on an island in Pacific coast to conduct biological weapon research (couldn't spare more spoiler than this). FYI, this base INDEED EXISTS in real life. This base is where the nuclear testing was conducted, and brought so many nuclear incidents in 1940s. There's a true story when a US sailor PICKED a disolved uranium on the shore after the explosion and BROUGHT it home to his home in NYC. Guess what? His hip bone (near where he pocketed the uranium at) grows disproportionally at a fast rate, rendering him handicap.
This movie makes me wonder all the biological weapons US has been developing over the years, exposed and unexposed to the public (ie. WMD or "Wasted Mind Diseases" developed in Colorado in early 1900s). And now it's striving toward genetically altered food (well, not exactly a weapon, but it's done similarly by altering DNAs just like creating this monster in this movie).
Tight anime. It's deep, it's full of politics, it's mature but without sex, and finally, characters drawn resembling REAL LIFE people (not some big eyes, big boobs and disproportionate bodies and hair). It's technically harder to draw real life human figure than anime character, since you're bound with the pressure to draw every single body parts correctly and proportionaly. Try it yourself.
This anime is not for action buffs who don't have brains when watching anime, though.

| This movie leaves this reviewer in two minds.... Whilst visually as good as the second film, the plot stretches the suspension of disbelief to an almost ridiculous degree. It is hard to imagine a monster movie of this kind ever existing in the heavy social and political worlds in which the first two movies are set.
That being said, it takes the concept of the monster genre in a typically Patlabor direction.... Rather than have the city in a panic about a human munching genetic experiment on the loose, the whole thing is hushed up to stop things going pear-shaped, so those with the authority can get on with the job of disposing of it. It also has the enigmatic anti-hero figure responsible for the situation, like the first two films.
But to make it as a Patlabor movie? The connections are tenuous.... There is so little of the Patlabor canon within this film that one wonders whether another movie script had the Patlabor material grafted onto it in the hope of selling it.
Although I do remember a sea-monster episode of the original Patlabor oav (my memory is quite faulty with age ;), so this plot isn't nearly as silly as it might seem in Patlabor terms.

| As with the previous two Patlabor movies there is no labor action, too bad. But the worst thing is that this movie is boring, the previous two offered some excitement but not this one. It tries to follow the same detective+intrigue type story as the first two movies, but there is no mystery here, hence it becomes boring quickly.

| Wow! Look at the animation of the movie, it's so nice! More than Ghost in the Shell! It took nine years to make this anime, it's for this reason the visual is perfect.
The sound is good too, no problem with that but there weren't memorable music (-2 points).
The structure of the story is just like the two first movie: problem on the beginning, investigation in the middle and intervention at the end. It was as hard to follow than PatLabor 1, but you don't need to watch it several time like PatLabor 2 (-1 point). Sadly, it doesn't contain the philosophy of the two previous movie (-1 point).
Nothing to say about the character. Some of them as a story, none of the character are useless, but I would like to see those in the two previous movie more often (-2 points).
It was a good purchase, one of the best anime of 2002 released in Japan. It sad that after watching the movie twice I understand the entire story, I would like more (-1 point).
I knew that WXIII:PatLabor would be a great movie with nice animation, very enjoying to see. The action scene at the end is less good than the two previous movie (-1 point)(my favorite action scene was in the second movie, the last part).

| Frankly speaking, I don't know how,or what is the maker's or Japanese fans' perspective of Patlabor.
While the animation top it among the three, but the enjoyment and attractive element are getting weaker and weaker.
This movie is too dead serious.
The involvement of SVU 2 is getting lesser and lesser.
When we rarely see Noa & Azuma co. in 2nd Movie, I was so full of hope when I heard the 3rd Movie is in progress.
I really hope that SVU 2 will make their comeback in this 3rd installment.
But we got SVU 2 even more rare than we did in 2nd Movie.
Not that this movie so bad you'd throw it on your garbage.
It has solid story to back it up, flawless in term of animation and sound.
But it's losing the humor and joke to make the atmosphere alive like they did on the 1st.
As I said earlier, as I am not Japanese, may be lost the main theme or perspective of the Patlabor.
But then again, it might be the maker that losing the main perspective.

| The Patlabor movies have become less and less mecha by the years. And this movie didn't exactly turn the tide. The story could be compared with the american version of Godzilla in some places. I thought it would go even more deeper politically then Patlabor 2. But well as you can read on the description, it's about a monster really. So one might think there would be more action this time. Think again. While the story is solid itself, I think it was displayed in a very boring way. The original Patlabor Unit is almost never seen in this one and it's only focused on the detectives.
Animation is still among the best though. But I require more from two of the best animation studios in Japan then just looks. Especially Madhouse.
