I don't remember it being too bad when I first watched this, but second time around I found it a little lacking and actually a little pointless! I still enjoyed watching it right after the TV series and really love the 3rd episode, but as sequels go, they'd have been better off not bothering!

I have never seen the origonal Blue Seed tv series so this review is based entirely on this short OVA. Blue Seed 2 was a mediocure OVA. The episodes seemed like random filler types, one battling monsters and another hanging out at a hot spring. There really wasn't anything about this OVA that makes it worth watching. If you want to know more read on.

Sequel my narrow ass. If you had even a smidgeon of liking for the original Blue Seed, then you should avoid this at all costs. If you didn't even like the first, then this certainly isn't going to change your mind. Gone is the loveable albeit dim-witted protagonist. Gone is the sarcastic and incorrigible Kusanagi. Gone is the loud, tough-talking Kome. In their places, we have a girl who only knows how to say the word "Kusanagi!" Yes, "Momiji" has very, very little actual dialogue in this. But she does love to appear scantily clothed even in the most inopportune situations. I suppose Kusanagi is supposed to be a stud now. His new character design irks me. Kome is softened bye...shall I say, love? Gag me with a spoon. And the new character is just a poorly concealed excuse for the lamest fan service you'll ever see. The creators made sure she was topless during her transformation sequence. Those are the "characters." Consider yourself warned.

Blue Seed Beyond claims to be a sequel, an epilogue if you will. But in reality, it's actually just a lame side-story. I don't think the word "Kaede" was even mentioned. Because the TV series actually had a good ending, I see no reason why this three-episode OVA should even exist. Just look at the title of the third episode. ...I rest my case.

These three episodes do very little to justify their own existence. The small main story really adds nothing to the original series, and the 3rd "hot springs" episode didn't even do that part right (the story they attempted in that episode wasn't even a very good excuse to be ecchi, how sad! T_T). The animation improved over the main series, but the music was equally forgetable. All and all, feel free to pass on this one.

Well, as others have said, this is visually better than the original series.
If you ask me, it's just sort of a small "expansion" for the original Blue Seed for those who really liked the first series and would like to take a peek at what happened to our merry gang after the final episode.

Recommended.

The music is definetly a step down from the original series. The change in voice actors for Momiji and Kusanagi was annoying! But then again it's not often that the brilliance of an original can be reachieved in a sequel. With that being said I felt the animation was slightly more crisp in blue seed 2 than in 1.

The storyline in the first two eps was a fair follow up to the original series. It was fairly tight and made sense so no complaints. As for episode three, either you are going to love it or hate it. Yeah it was unnecessary and blatant but it was funny if you looked at it from a light-hearted point of view.

Overall I don't think fans of the series will be disappointed in the follow up.
