I haven't read the manga, which I guess you are supposed to do if you are gonna get anything out of this OVA. In my book, this was a waste of an hour.

I guess this is one of those OVAs that is a little snippet of the deeper manga story; something like "you've enjoyed the manga, now see a section come to life" (not that I've read the manga) and I guess if I had read the manga I may have enjoyed it more, but it was a sweet little OVA that helped pass some time ^_^

Did I just miss something? Or is it because I had never read the manga before watching the anime? Because....I really liked this show. I was surprised at the number of negative reviews.

Well, I'm not gonna try to counterattack others' reviews....I just wanna state my own thoughts. This anime was cool. It was fun. It reminded me of summer. It had some of its cheesy moments (the "daring rescue" of Itsuki from the motorcycle....the whole idol/model thing, which kinda bored me.....the diving into the deep water tunnel--hm, I think he would've drowned, really), but somehow I was able to look past that and still really get into this anime. Maybe it's because I had no expectations. I knew nothing about it beforehand.

Anyway.....animation was cool. No doubts there, even from other reviewers. And I dunno about everyone else, but I liked the music. I hope to get the OST one of these days. Story was short, and well, not much of a story. I think I just got much more out of the visuals and emotion of the story rather than the story itself. Can't say much about the characters....no real development in 2 eps. But anyway....I could watch this again. I thought it was great.

And yes, one of these days I'll try reading the manga also....since apparently everyone says "it's all that" and such. ^^

By the by....don't know if this was mentioned before, but the "Tooryanse" song in the anime is a traditional Japanese song. It used to be that many traffic crosswalk signals would play the song when the green "walk" signal turned on, but according to one animator who created the "Beyond" segment in The Animatrix (I forget his name), these days it's hard to find a crosswalk signal that still plays the song. And considering that the song lyrics talk about following a path, not knowing where exactly it will lead.....to me I think it's cool, and maybe a bit funny, to make it be played by crosswalk signals. ^^;

Although I have not read the manga, this was a very short, but very cute short story.

Animation: I have no complaints about the artwork; it follows the original anime/manga characteristics of a character.

Sound: The background music I found boring and unoriginal, especially the song that keeps repeating itself. However, taken its length into consideration, I did not expect much dramatic sound effects.

Story: I thought it was a very cute story, and the length was what made it short and sweet. Although it was rather predictable and I watch it on and off (while writing my school report), I especially like the bitter sweet ending. Do not expect much action; it is just a little story to cure your boredom.

Character: I had first thought Ichitaka to be a wimp and a coward, but he performed himself spectacularly in this ova. Although he was the only character who did anything and the other side-characters did not develop, I did not expect much to happen in this short segment.

Enjoyment: Overall, I really did like this ova. It was short, sweet, and not perverted. There was a bit of action too, showing Ichitaka's heroic abilities. Even though Iroi was not the main heroine (at least I do not think so), I liked how that part was split among two girls. If you do not like little girly stories, it really isn't the ova for you, but if you want something short and bitter sweet, definitely watch it. ^_^

Albeit a nice, lighthearted, romantic anime, this OVA is quite far from the manga. Whereas the latter was all about character development and intimate strife, the anime just offers a sweet, one-day, summer insight in the lives or of well-known characters, namely Iori Yoshisuki, Ishikata Seto and Itsuki Akiba. The story is an original one, meaning that it's not featured in the manga.

The show tries to depict characters accordingly to the manga, but being short on time, only a few feats can be guessed, while much (most) remains shady (which is soooo bad for those who haven't read the manga, and therefore do not already know said characters). The feeling is very 'light', as said, and overall nice. Dramatic tension doesn't even try to get close to the one the manga offered its readers, and this is most likely an intentional choice, so that the anime has a 'filler' feeling about it.

Reading the manga would be advisable BEFORE watching this I"S OVA, which yet is a nice production, and also quite enjoyable (mostly because of its levity, although this could be seen as negative by some). A romantic summer tale.

See specific sections for further details. (C) 2005 kaneda1080

Only lovers of the I's manga should be watching this OVA and only when trying to get over the emptiness felt after realization that the manga has ended.

I'm not sure whether the creators wanted to create a dream-like atmosphere or simply that they could only afford the sound studio for 1 day as the OVA lacked susbtantial voice content. Often times, the OVA would run without any sounds save for non-discrete elevator-like background music. If the director had wanted to create a visual feast without aural pollution, he has failed miserably with his poor "cinematography." The end result is that the OVA feels incomplete - that it has not been through sound editing.

I was surprised at how much Ichitaka and Iori looked like that characters of Keichi and Belldandy (Ah My Goddess!) towards the conclusion of the OVA. In the latter parts Iori's design was barely recognizable as the beloved character created by Katsura-san in the manga.

I found it amusing that in order to preserve the pretention that the OVA can slide into the universe of the manga (which it cannot, since Itsuki never came back from the US in the manga), they had to kill off the character created only for the OVA. However, the only purpose this served was to beg the question of why a new character was introduced in a 60 minute OVA in the first place.

Most OVA's don't really give any closure; let alone any substance of making some certain developed details from their own short given feature. The production of "I's" wasn't as clear as one can really describe their true basis with its very quick characterization, condensed plot and their few scenario of conflicts that were played through; which hasn't developed much close admiration with them. The music and animation was highly decent, which I thought it was nicely done from their dream-like state. However, the details wasn't really given a lot of supportive and historical background of who the characters really were, and would find it hard to follow if they haven't read the manga. As the same from Video Girl Ai, everything tends to move non-linear; on which they have a separate scene on each of the character's roles and their certain love-triangle conflict. Well, it's not really as great or needed to see from this one; unless you are actually familiar with the manga itself. Or else you might not have that perception on the complete storyline. Personally, I fairly thought it was fine because I grew up on reading the manga, so I don’t really have too much complaints. But I can't really recommend this fully to an extent.

I don't think it was to bad. At some point I actually thought why am I watching this but it got better very soon. Well it is to short it hard to get whats going on and why things are happening but I did get at pretty good overall sense of the OVA.

There is very little about the characters and thier development. It is nothing wrong with the sound or animation. It's annoying that they don't tell anyting about the characters but there is no time for that in this short OVA.

This is the kind of anime that makes you wonder why it was made. There is some attractive scenery. The plot - well, a plot is possible in a two-episode work, but in this case much of what is happening is opaque to the viewer.

The villains are stock villains. As for the good guys, you hardly have time to learn their names before the thing is over. And since a good bit of time is spent in flashbacks to 10 years earlier, the current story is pretty brief.

Maybe I missed the point of one episode, but a guy gets knifed, and the characters don't seem to make much of it, even after his ghost appears. Since the viewer hasn't had enough time to get to know him, it's not even remotely an emotional moment.

I gave this a fairly decent rewatch value since I may force myself to watch it again to make some sense of it. The music isn't anything memorable either.

Oh my, this was simply terrible! Why, oh why did I have to go and watch it even after I had seen the bad ratings? Serves me right!

Well, the only good thing that can be said about this OVA is that it has good animation. All the rest is bad!

The sound is something I don't really care to talk much about. Bearable I'd say. Maybe even a little below average on the music department.

The story was horrible. I've never seen anything as bad (or I have, unfortunately, but this one is down there in my top 10 for bad plots). I don't even know what to call this. Romance? There wasn't any. Just stupid crushes. Drama? Poor atempts at it. Action? Just...don't get me started. They tried to add some action... and they failed miserably. Plus, the story is somewhat confusing.

The characters are another weak point. There's too many of them. The baddies are typical 'bad boy wannabes'. The main characters don't have much of a personality. They are so very cliched! Oh please! *rolls eyes*

To make a long story short, this was so bad, I almost couldn't watch it. I kept wanting to stop it and go do something good with my time. Like watching paint dry... or sleep... or watch good anime! But I made myself watch it just so I could warn you all: DON'T-WATCH-IT!

I am just rating this purely as a anime in its own right, regardless of the manga.

And as an anime, it really sucked I think, not many people will know what the hell is going on, or rather not know why it’s going on. The animation was really nice, something any OVAs can be proud of, smooth and at times atmospheric.

But the sound wasn’t, it was, I think, actually very poor, I hated the childhood song that the girl kept singing, and it seemed that the whole anime revolved round that.

Characters didn’t really help much either, though I thought they looked great personally. Only if the story was better works, but then again, this was probably targeted at people who are fans of I’s series and/or have read the manga.

Didn’t enjoy this myself, but however if you are a fan of I’s, then make sure you check this out, nothing quite beats your favourite manga characters animated, and quite well animated at that.

I liked it. It was sad, romantic, exciting, or at least it tried to be all of these. I will admit, this was lacking in a few places. I could tell it would have been much better if it had been longer and not an OAV. By the way, OAV means it was never on TV, so it didn't have a huge budget and was only accessible to people who bought the eps. I would love to read the manga now that I know it's better, or so say the people below me. Now for a short chastisment of them.
You freaking retards are supposed to rate it for its value as an ANIME. You are NOT supposed to compare it with manga. In my opinion, there is no such thing as a video representation that's better than the book, so OBVIOUSLY the manga is better.

I''s (Aizu) is a manga by Katsura Masakazu that came out about 10 or so years ago, basically about a boy Ichitaka Seto, who likes an idol, Iori Yoshizuki, and his.. adventures (of sort) that takes place throughout the manga, while other people (Itsuki Akiba, Izumi Isozaki) also vie for his heart. It is a very touching manga, well worth the read, if you ever come across it.

I's OVA is basically based off of the manga. However, 15 volumes (143 1/2 chapters) cannot fit into two episodes. No way in hell. So, the OVA makers decided to create a sidestory/alternate I''s world with its own plot and its own interpretation of everything.

Unfortunately, the result is so different from the manga, that I'm having problems as to whether to base the review on this OVA by itself, independently from the manga, or based on the manga, since almost all anime/OVAs are based off their original sources, almost to a the frame. But I'll be a nice guy and go with the former. I'll give my final opinion based _on_ the manga at the very end, for those who have read I''s (and I severely discourage those who haven't read I''s manga to skip it, since it contains a lot of spoilers).

I's OVA is during (around) Seto's summer after his second year in high school, where everyone has taken off for their respective summer breaks to do what they want to do. Iori is off to model, part of her idol requirement, Seto is off on his own biking excursion, and Itsuki (Seto's childhood friend) is returning to Japan after leaving for America ten years go. The OVA basically is one day in Seto's life, equivalent to maybe three or four chapters of the manga. But, mind you, this storyline does not exist in the manga. (The comparison is for those who have read the manga.)

I'll have to start the critique by saying this. The music absolutely _sucks_ totally forgetable theme song (no OP), and the BGM is basically a cacophony. Actually, worse than cacaphony. At least a cacaphony gets your blood pressure up. The BGM just made me tune it out from the anime. However, aside from that, the OVA is half decent considering the amount of time it had to work with. The plot is crafted cleverly with many flashbacks to Itsuki's and Seto's life that occured a decade ago, how the city had changed since Itsuki left, and how everyone's fate from those ten years prior converges at the very same spot, even though everyone forgot about that pledge from so far ago.

Many of the characters from the manga make an appearance in the OVA, except for Yasumasa (is he the right guy? I don't exactly remember clearly), including the villians who are after Iori. Unfortunately, the main characters aren't unique from each other to really make me want to dig into the OVA more. And the obligatory villians take up screen space and really don't add much to the series itself, though the ending was very touching. The story doesn't go much deeper than the 'promise' that happened 10 years that was unfolding. The romance never even kicks in either, which is a real pity, since it was hinted at very strongly in the first ten minutes of the OVA (as incredibly confusing the first ten minutes were). It would have been nicer if the anime were a tad longer to develop a better story, including the romance, but, well, 'C'est fait accompli.'

This OVA, from a purely independent perspective, is at least worth taking a look at. The written storyline isn't bad considering the amount of time it had to work with. The OVA is worth looking at to see how well the independent storyline is written that weaves together stories from two time periods into one hour. It's a fairly enjoyable watch with some reservations. However, it would be even better if an anime series was created to really show the true great nature of the manga.

Now for the full-blown review based on the manga, no holds barred.

Manga Spoilers ahead, highly recommended for those who haven't read the manga to not read any further:

I's OVA does not do I''s manga justice. Not in a million years. Granted that the OVA goes on its own to build its own storyline and more or less portrayed Seto pretty well (sans the schizophrenia from the manga) it got absolutely everything wrong.

The characters are completely different from the manga. Itsuki is not the tomboy, Iori is not the delicate, yet confident idol, his long-haired friend (I forget his name) is not the pondering character that he is about relationships. His four-eyed friend is not a pervert. The animation fared better, but still fell way short. The spectacular artwork in the manga is dulled (at best) in this series. The excitement and the anticipation is severely lacking in this series. Oh yeah, and they added a mysterious extra character that didn't exist in the manga. That by itself should basically indicate how far off the OVA was.

The romance was aboslutely sidestepped. Not even touched. And it was the _central_ theme of the whole manga. Granted that the romance in the manga was pretty complicated, but the series didn't even dwell on it other than 'Seto likes Iori.. Moving on with the story..' And the length of the OVA should have been much, much longer. Hell. It should have been an anime series instead. The way the story was presented was also terrible. I was totally lost when I first saw this series. The first ten minutes. I stopped watching, and didn't touch it until about 10 months later, when I had actually read the manga. Only then did I understand this OVA. I really don't think I can rant anymore about how bad this series was. I'm just getting more and more confused just thinking as to how many things went wrong with this OVA.

In short: stay away from this OVA if you want to preserve the great experience that was I''s, and pray that they'll come out with a series that will right the wrongs this OVA has caused to the I''s title.

Adjusted ratings based off of the manga:

Animation: 3. The animation does not match Katsura's animation quality that he had in his manga. The scenery is nice, but there are also a lot of still-frame shots that are, imo, unexcusable for an OVA.
Sound: 1.
Story: 2. At least they mentioned the romance, and they had some semblance of a storyline to fit in an hour.
Characters: 2. Seto is as indecisive and gutless as ever, but the rest of the characters weren't even close, and Katsura had _the_ best characters drawings I have ever seen, especially of the girls. This anime has nice animations, but doesn't even come close. And where's Itsumi and all the other female love rivals?
Value: 2. Wasted a CD to burn this onto.
Enjoyment: 2. Not even close to the manga in terms of overall quality and enjoyment.

I'll start off by saying, I's as an anime is absolutely nothing compared to the manga.

The animation is acceptable, and the sound is of somewhat a decent work. However, the story and characters in the OVA is totally off and does not do the original manga any justice. This could be classified as a weakly structured romantic anime, since the characters all has trouble showing any feelings at all.

The characters in this OVA all had trouble showing their true characteristics, probably due to the length of the OVA, they just weren't given enough chance to develop.

As a final note, I'd like to suggest to people who wants to get into I's to just read the manga, and ignore the anime. Trust me, you're not missing out on anything.

This anime did not leave me all too impressed. The intro was weak, and the ending was weak; meanwhile the story was broken into two different stories, which tied into one, all in two episodes. Another episode may have solved this lack of depth. The animation was decent, but that is all it has going for it...oh, well. My recommendation is if you've got time to kill, go download it.

Alles in allem würde ich I's niemanden empfehlen. Hier ist nichts wirklich Drama und nichts wirklich Romanze, Fans dieser Genres sollten sich also nicht zuviel von diesem OVA versprechen.

Very pretty looking anime. I had no idea why they put this one together to create something so so so terribly boring. It's basically watching 3 scenarios that happen at the same time that come together.

There was nothing special in the sound except voices and ambient sounds. There isn't even a whole lot of dialogue in the series. There maybe about 10 minutes of dialogue for the whole hour of both the episodes so don't expect a lot of talking.

Steer clear of this one if you don't like to be bored to tears.

The reviews are deceptive...I really don't know why they give such horrible scores. I had little idea of what was going on (or why it happened for that matter), but it was still enjoyable and I hope this OVA is just to introduce some storyline of an upcoming TV series.

Comparisons between manga/anime versions aren't necessarily fair either - considering that the creative talent can be entirely different among other things.

I'm still not getting what this is supposed to be. It's certainly has nothing to do with the I"s manga (which was brilliant) except a few characters. And only a few, most of them aren't in the manga at all. Neither is the story.

Now, after reading how horrendous this was, I decided I was going to think of it as a stand-alone OVA, no relation to the manga. And yet still, it's pretty bad.

A few other comments:
-didn't like the design for Iori
-they threw in I"s characters for no reason except they are from I"s (nothing to do with the story)
-slow
-animation looks washed out

If you have seen the manga, I warn you that you shouldn't expect a faithful adaptation, and if you haven't, well I can't even recommend it to you. It's bad.
