Great anime with spectacular visuals and a haunting score. This was my first time watching a series part of the Macross universe (I am usually not really into mecha) but I must say I was mightily impressed. This is a must watch.

I wouldnt know about Macross Zero if I hadnt entered an IRC channel and when I mentioned Yukikaze anime one unknown entity typed the phrase "Macross Zero is better than Yukikaze". I thought then is this really true? Because Yukikaze was one of the best and most atmospheric animes Gonzo has made. I read some reviews here but one cant really have an opinion about a title unless he has watched the title himself.

From the first minutes during the dogfights I thought I saw Yukikaze. If I had posted a screenshot in an anime picture trivia thread, no one could tell the difference. But that impression lasted only a 2-3 minutes. Because after the moment Shin falls on the island I thought that the anime is nothing more than another demonstration of what CGI can do. But this anime adds something more. It looks like a flyer for a tropical island vacation. Really when I saw the islanders and the village it came to my mind it would be a good anime to attract tourists to Polynesia or Western Indies.

I had nothing against the characters as they were good if very static and clicheed overall, even the anti-UN forces. What made me want to put this title in the deepest of my subconsciousness was the complete lack of story, the sheer superficiality and the undeveloped characters. As for the enviromentalist message I liked it a lot, but I wonder why does it need a series like Macross to be relayed. Make a short advertisement instead.

After the third episodes finally some action appears and the final episode with the thanks of CGI is memorable. Problem is that except the technical department this anime has nothing to impress me.
I admit the dogfights were nice but if there's nothing more in an anime it would be better to try a WWII combat simulator on a PC instead.

If you like CGI only and nothing more you can watch Macross Zero but for an anime with better story and characters I'd recommend Yukikaze and after watching this crap even more so.

Macross at first might seem as an all action anime. Action parts are very good; Dog fights are breath taking. Macross Zero is even worth to for action scenes.

It is best not to considers Macross Zero as a long one since time limited many things left untouched like one cannot understands why this forces are enemies. It is best to watch its sequel Super Dimensional Fortress Macross.

Details are missing at Macross Zero will be resolved there after and at Macross Plus.

Besides action scenes sound makes you feel the scene you are watching.

Having Human Race as an experimantal being by some aliens make me remind me Scrapped Princess(which is made after Original Macross series). It is a popular Topic but at M. Zero it is detailed well also.

To sum up I really enjoyed Macross Zero and cant stop watchin all the episodes at once.

I have to watch this anime couple of times before I decided to give the score. I admitted that the name Macross is nostalgic to those who watched the anime back in 1980s. As a fan of this series (when I was young), I am reluctant to give any negative score to this reincarnation series of 2002 until I watched this anime carefully and decided that this is the score it deserved.

I would like to explain that people think differently, and my opinion is solely representing another branch of thinking, which might not compliment the other braches of thinking. Before reading my review further, I would like to ask the reader of my review one question, if you said YES, then this review is actually opposite to your opinion. Therefore, if you want to read my review further in optional field, you have to open your mind and accept the people who have different opinion. If you can't do that, then just ignore my comment, and read someone else reviews, whoever you think they might share your opinion.

My question is:

If you are on your way to lunch break (presumably that you are having 1 hour- walking to/from office takes 20 minutes, queuing at the burger store took 5 minutes), then there are two people approaching you. First is a member of anti-nuclear testing NGOs. Second is the Greenpeace member. Both of them try to approach to you. They want you to listen to their environmental schemes, donate your lunch money to build Rainbow Warrior, join their demonstration for 20 minutes to Iran embassy and yell "NO to nuclear testing", and take their sticker to put in your office desk, and your car. Are you going to donate your lunch budget and end up starving for those environmentalist ideologists ? (presumably that it is the end of the week, and you have only $5 for a burger until tomorrow, and you hate to withdraw the money from your account, on top of that those NGOs want to talk for 40 minutes and taking most of your precious lunch break)

If you say YES. Then ignore my review. If you say NO. Then click on more reviews section.

I'll be honest and say this is the first of the Macross genre I have seen. And while it's a nice add to the action/mecha/sci-fi genre...there were points of the series that left me feeling disappointed. I liked this series to an extent, but it didn't really impress me that much. I know a lot of people hold this particular part of the series in high regard, but grant me a chance to objectively highlight the strengths as well as apparent weaknesses in this series. Unfortunately, the weaknesses stood out much more than the strengths at times.

I won't bother going on about the amazing visuals or the rather one-dimensional characters and perplexing last 55 minutes, I'm writing more of a political review. Before I go into my diatribe I would like to comment quickly on how Macross Zero fits into the entire Macross saga.

It was quite compelling to see the events of the UN war played out like this. The appearence of Roy Fokker as the first VF-0 squadron commander was a delight (being a big Fokker fan from the original Macross Saga), though I felt as though his performance was underused and the focus was too heavily on the mystical, tribal nature of the story. I pine for a good mecha anime that plays out more like a good war story than a high-school soap opera, but Zero's fight scenes are amongst the best of either animated or live-action film - Hollywood could should take note of the frenetic but still information-packed camera angles during the dogfights, I never felt as though I was missing the action.

However, what I find most interesting is how much Macross Zero seems to act as a corralary to current political trends in Japan and their preception of the international community. Sara's lamenting of the foreign invasion of Mayan island and how things were fine until the 'white people' (that could be just a subtitle translation error, but I'm not sure if the original Japanese phrase is 'gaijin') arrive was setting off alarm bells as drawing a major comparison to Japan's state of affairs before the Second World War - or even the Meiji Restoration if one wants to look back further. This insular view espoused by Sara very much seems to run parallel to current neo-nationalist political currents running through the Japanese government and conservative Japanese sociopolitical circles. The actions of the UN and the anti-UN forces in destroying the holy and sacricent island of Mayan just seem to draw too many conclusions to the Imperial Japanese state. Perhaps that's my historian's perspective reeding far too much between the lines, but it seemed rather siginficant to me.

Nevertheless, Macross Zero is a fine addition to the Macross saga. Certainly not the bomb that Macross 7 was but not up to the high standards of Macross Plus or the original Macross Saga, Zero is a great watch for Macross fans and those who enjoy seeing the true splendour of modern anime thriving in it's visual field.

The animation was great, really high tech and nice. The ocean looked almost real and other graphics too. The sound was ok, but music alright, nothing special.

The story is really similar to Rahxephon or Evangelion, which is the idea of a new workd after total destruction because the world that we live in is really corrupted or impured. However, the idea of that is all nice and interesting, but they made the ending really bad.

Also the character development didn't really help. The main character Saraa is really weak, in away that she is deceiving herself about not being interested in the modern world. Also about her feelings toward Shin. This made me want to go crazy because she is so weak and can't really decided in some stuff. I don't like her character at all.

Overall, i enjoyed the anime the first two or three episodes, but after that the ending really sucked. You have to see it to understand how dissapointing it was. I wil recommend to people that wants to watch a short anime to kill sometime.

I have been a Macross fan since I was a kid and Macross Zero comes the closest to the Macross scenes in my head of any previous incarnation. Some may prefer Macross Plus, but I'll take Macross Zero.

Visually it's stunning. Audio-wise it's amazing (I have the OST, if you don't believe me listen to the OST on it's own... though Macross is known for it's music as much as it's mecha). Story is good, I mean they only had 5 episodes to fit a whole series into so it gets a bit time compressed. Character development works, even if it's short and the back story behind the legendary Roy Fokker is nice to see even if it is only a piece of the puzzle of Roy.

All in all it works and works well at being entertaining. A must see.

Now this is some candy for your eyes. Macross Zero looks absolutely amazing. 3D animation is perfectly matched with 2D. Fights scene's are fluid and impressive. Scenes in general are detailed and the island's jungle looks very beautiful. The animation style is different than with Gonzo who has a lot of special effects and jaw-dropping scenes. In Macross Zero it's eye-pleasing and it works without any special tricks.

So it's nice to watch but did I fall sleep because there was no substance? Luckily the answer is no. MZ has a nice story of cultural clash and mysterious powers from the past. The cast is interesting too. It was nice to follow Shin's development but I didn't really get why he and Sara fell in love. Oh well, you got to have your romance. The other characters had enough of past to make them interesting. Other thing buggering me was the ancient master against student scenario with Focker.

I haven't see any other Macross series so I can't comment how this fits with the Macross universe. But I can say you can enjoy it 100% even without any prior experience.

I do not like mecha anime. I really don't. So when VivaFruit recommended that I watch this five-episode OVA, my skepticism was naturally aroused. I watched episode 1, reluctance not quite stowed away, and to my surprise I found myself enjoying the anime. Unfortunately the whole affair slowed down a little bit as the anime reached its end, but my devirginization to the Macross series was a surprisingly pleasant one. Certainly not perfect, and occasionally agitating, but pleasant nonetheless.

I was surprised with Macross Zero's story, a well-presented and intelligent take on the mecha anime. Here the typical robot material is spliced with liberal doses of tribal lore, which is something of a double-edged sword. On the positive point, it adds a great deal of flavor to an anime that otherwise may have been somewhat dry. I honestly feel that the animation and the culture are the only things that kept Macross Zero from becoming more generic mecha-dreck. On the negative point, however, this Mayan tribe was just not developed enough to pull around its weight. We know some scattered legends and their fanatical belief in the Kadun, their adamant excuse to keep their civilization in developmental stasis. 90% of the dialogue that you'll hear from Sara or any other villager save Mao is "The Kadun of Fire/Battle/Really Weird Moles has invaded our village/this person/this sacred site! Quickly, drive the foreigners out/have a funky ritual!" Naturally, it began to get rather tiresome. They have a Kadun for just about everything, and I began to laugh at how contrived some of them were. That said, however, I do feel that most of the time the placement of this totemic twist worked smoothly and definitely added a lot to the anime.
The plot itself is strong and fairly simple to grasp, though a little bit convoluted and pretty much thrown out the window by the final episode (easily the weakest episode of the OVA). The final episode begins so strangely that I got confused and rewatched the end of the fourth, just to find that there was no rationalization for the sudden plot twist that had just occurred. The anime spends the remainder of its time dealing with this new turn of events, ignoring whatever foundations it had built up until then. We are left in the dust with the questions pondered earlier; what is it, exactly, that caused evolutionary facilitation in humans? What was up with that weird flashback of people getting slaughtered? What will become of the village? These questions are never explained, or at least clearly. I don't think the anime even ended that well, but at the very least it concluded each of the characters' stories.

The characters serve their purpose in the anime, but they don't really hold water. Shin is fairly unpalatable to begin with, given his bizarre disrespect of the people around him, but fortunately develops into someone that the viewer can actually bear to watch. I'd go so far as to say he's the best character of the bunch, in fact. I REALLY did not like Sara; she is selfish and closed-minded, moreso than Shin. Her relationship with Shin is not very developed at all, and when they start to fall in love with each other I just wondered why. There seemed to be little more than enmity between the two for most of the series, and as a result Shin's decision to romance her feels like a feeble attempt to create a love triangle. The third point of this wacky trilateral, little Nao, is so poorly explored and developed that her character potential far outweighs her actual appeal. There was a lot they could have done with her, but instead we get scant glimpses of her affection for Shin and resentment of tribal ways.
Having not seen any more of Macross, I couldn't bring myself to appreciate the presence of Roy Focker as much as I should have, but he was a fairly strong supporting character. He wasn't used much but worked well enough when he was. Aries was stupid most of the time, exhibiting a surprising lack of people skills or common sense for a scientist. And finally, no one on the antagonists' side was very compelling.

I personally feel that another episode was planned for Macross Zero, owing to the somewhat incomplete ending, holes in character growth and unexplained factors of the plot. Of course, with an OVA as ambitious and good-looking as this, one could understand Bandai running out of the funds necessary to develop another episode. For what it is, however, Macross Zero is a fun mecha romp with some exhilarating battles and a plot that can be very interesting at times. Any mecha or air-combat fan would devour this, but those not interested in the genre should find enough to keep them watching as well.

The prequel to the classic that is the Macross Saga. First impressions: the animations are amaaaazing. Okay, sometimes the mechas look platsicky at times but some of the scenes were so stunningly beautiful that it deserves a dead high mark. The story was a little confusing. I think I made life hard for myself by trying to see how this integrated in with the Macross Saga, and to be honest, it doesn't really seem to, the few links we were given didn't quite fit in with what was learnt in the Macross Saga and for a prequel I consider that to be a serious flaw. But other than that it was quite good. I quite liked the mix of what seemed to be mythology and science. A pretty good set of characters - we even see the return of Roy Focker, who, strangely enough, was of rank Major even back then, heh. The best OVA I've seen.

certainly , the most stunning animation i ever saw in anime. such quality , so realistic . it was like watching a movie with great effects . yet , the sotry is lacking and the characters development as well.

the story is interesting in someway , but on other hand , it's ridiculous . i didn't like all the "kadum spirits are going to crush you!" , "the kadum are bad spirits , you are a kadum , get lost !" and nonsense like that . but there were some good and interesting points in the story , for example : in the end , everything got clear , and we understood that the human bird is against war , however he's in favor of destorying all the people who fights , and this is actually the whole world . with that , what the professor said can be a material for thinking . but i , personally , don't agree with him . and one more thing about the end , it was stupid . really . for some reason i had a feeling that i'll get an end like this. it's a pity .

the characters are not amazing nor bad , but i didn't like them . it's not like i hate them , it's just how they behaves , and their personality . furthermore i didn't notice any characters development . except Shin , who understood the life of the Mayan , and the "way of nature" . but if ithink about that ... how can i expect good characters development just in 5 episodes? i guess i can't .

the animation is superb , amazing . like i said , it's like watching a movie with great effects .

The sound is also great . the song which Sara was singing during the series, and the background music are really great.

so what macross zero is in the end? an anime with amazing animation , really enjoyable but lacks of good story and characters development . if you don't mind getting a cliche story and don't really mind geeting no caharcters development , but you like damn-great-amazing animation and enjoyment ( that by the way , assured ) , you should watch this . i reccomend this anime to people who don't care of story and characters .

Admittedly, this was my first taste of Macross, and i absolutely loved the taste. The show started off with a bang, with great action scenes cheoragraphed with great animation and graphics that water your mouth as you stare. The pictures are so pretty and vivid that you would never want to take your eyes off even for a second. If you think Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is beautiful, wait till you watch this.

Of course, no series is complete without the plot. The story reminiscise of Evangelion in a way, but falls short on the ending. Basically, it's about the UN and the anti-UN forces warring against each other trying to find knowledge on an extraterristial superior technology. The first three episodes were great in the sense that they brought the storyline to climax in a pacing few would complain. Fourth episode serves as an anti-climax to build up character development, but it didn't blend in well and spoils the smooth-flowing of the show. All of a sudden, the characters show warmth where before there's only coldness.

The last episode manages to wrap up everything, though it's a bit cliche. A safe average closure so to say. They didn't produce a spectacular ending that leaves an everlasting impression like Evangelion did, but the CGI effects will definitely leave you in awe for long.

Remember Atlantis: The Lost Empire? That's the kind of story you would expect to see from Macross Zero.

Macross Zero is a visually stunning anime, with the best looking animation I've ever seen. They combine very nice 2D with stunning 3D in a way that gives you shivers. It's niec looking eye-candy.

However, a show can't be great with just stunning visual effects, great sound effects and nice fights. What it needs is a good story, and that's where Macross Zero is lacking. It's not that it is a boring story or anything like that, it's just that there isn't much of a story at all, which is a pity for an eye-candy like this. There is just enough story to make it over the line for trash.
I didn't like any of the overnatual bulls***, nor did I like the ridiculous end.

Not really any music you put on your mind, but there is enough to make the mood. Nothing special about the charactervoices, nor the characters itself, you don't get to know much about any of them.

Macross Zero have great fights, a massive amount of stunning graphics, mediocre story, great soundeffects and so-so characters(too bad most of the characters don't develope at all).
I did enjoy it most of the time, so I'm not going to say it is a bad show, cause it's not. If you don't care about it having a weak plot, and love visually stunning fights, then this is what you want. But don't expect too much, I know I did.

Macross Zero is by far the best looking anime I have ever seen. The 3-D is purposeful as this is a mech. anime. The story deals with the world of Robotech/Macross. The transformations of the fighters look much cooler in this then in any other segment of this series. The only possible problem is the length, (its only five episodes long), and the great amount of time between the release of each episode. They are all out now so that won't be a problem for those who want to begin watching. If you would like to know more read my review.

First impression this anime gave me, had my hopes up for a fantastic joyride full of excellent drama and character development with kickass action to go alongwith it. The animation is downright eyepopping. The dogfights are a visual treat to watch.

Alas what lacks is a coherent development of the storyline and inconsistency in characters. To put things plainly: the anime is boring as hell. There is no real feel in the action scenes because I couldnt care less for the characters. The story is predictable and nothing unique. Even though its sequel counterpart Macross Plus wasnt too oiginal either at least the characters got through and made an impression.

Inspite of the shortcomings its not a bad watch but not something I'd recemmond unless you're a complete mech fanatic.

I had watched may too many Gundams. This time I try Macross instead. I had read quite a good reviews for this OVA, then I decided to give this a shot. There's only one word to describe this 5 episode OVA: Splendid!! WOW!! I never see such computer graphics before!!! It's perfect!! The fighting action is beyond excellent, making you very excited!! This is one remarkable styles of this OVA.
Stroy wise, however, reminds me too much about Gundams. Even though UN and anti-UN uses flight jets for atmosphere battle, the jets can transform into a mobile suits!! I heard (read from internet) that the creators of Macross series are also a bunch of Gundam fans, I was wondering that if they get this idea from the Zeta Gundam transformations. We also have some "Newtype" concepts in here, such as Mao and Sara. With their idea of peace and nature (In quite a cutural, esoteric way), it reminds me of the idea of war in many Gundam series.
I have no idea why UN and anti-UN are fighting. I also don't know what's with the aliens. Since this is my first Macross series, I will have to find out myself by watching the first Macross then. Eventhough I don't understand why they are fighting, I can deal with it because I can guess that they are fighting because of their different ideas of government, which is again, just like the Gundam series.
In accord to mahq.net, the setting of Macross Zero is years before the original series. They go backward in time instead. We have a unknown culture in a tiny island with their "ridiculous" beliefs. Yet, their culture, in accord to the story, is come from the extraterritorial. We also see that this extraterritorial matters also plays a major role of war. It might see that whatever side who obtain this factor can be victorious, on the other hand, it may not. The last episode serve as a perfect example.
The overall theme may seen to be obvious, which is the ideology of peace and humanity. The overall 5 OVA series yield to quite a meaningful story and is very exciting to enjoy.

In general, a superb OVA series that is a top choice for mecha fans. A highly recommended series for Macross fans. Yet, it is better to watch the first Macross in order to understand what the hell is actually going on, because this OVA is just an add-on to the original story.
