I am really disappointed by this anime. Even though I came in not expecting anything, I felt like Someday's Dreamer was a tremendous waste of time. At the end, I didn't feel closer to any of the character except for a little bit more familiarity with Yume (the main character). I blame this on the lack of a defined focus, and the unnecessary side characters.

--------------------------

The beginning of Someday's Dreamer shows promise - we have a somewhat realistic implementation/acceptance of 'mages' in everyday society. Although the discrimination/bias is very subtle, the focus is mainly on Yume's growth and maturity as she learns to bear the responsibilities of a certified mage of society.

Nevertheless, rather than focus on character building story of Yume, we get these unnecessary plot elements such as Angela's first love with a failed magician. A little girl's less-than-ideal living situation, etc etc. Sure it creates a more realistic and fuller scenario, but with such little episode time, one really shouldn't stray. Instead, they should have focused on the more interesting stories! Like the boy who lost his leg, Yume's teacher, more about Yume, and even Yume's mom (which was briefly mentioned as having a strong influence but not really explored). Episodes 1-3 were interesting, and it should have just gone straight to episode 9-12, and beyond.

Character-development gripes aside, there really isn't that much of a story, which is fine by me. Again, like I mentioned, this anime focuses on Yume's maturation and realization as she comes to bear more responsibility with her power. I enjoyed how it was presented in a somewhat realistic way, I just wished they could have spent more screentime on Yume rather than useless side character.

I briefly mentioned this before, but this anime takes a somewhat different approach in that 'mages' are an integral part of society. A minority that has its own bureaucracy that manages and legitimizes its use for good purpose. In other words, if normal people "request" it. Now the important question is -- did they create a realistic scenario? In general, they did. Yes, they included that one scene when the old lady yelled at Yume for not being able to conjure up a balloon. Yes, there was the rogue mage who wanted to use his powers for good without going through bureaucracies. Yes, the soccer boy didn't want pity from Yume in the form of money. Yet, despite this realism, I felt that Yume's attempt to understand her role relative to society felt so alien from reality. In other words, it felt like two separate stories. On the one hand, the world has some sort of inherent bias against mages. On the other, all Yume has dealt with are her fellow mages and a few clients. To put it simply, the macrocosm and microcosm are not aligned.

After watching this, I regret that I wasted my time on these 12 episodes. Had I known there was a manga with a similar setting, I would have just gone straight to that. Not only was the character development spread too thinly, some portions of the voice acting felt very off. In the end, Someday's Dreamer is best left in somebody else's dream.

Not recommended.

Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto is a perfect example of wasted potential. A mediocre-good anime, that could have been one of the best. Too short, too simple. But still, it is enjoyable watching for nearly all the time.

(by AnimeOwnage and Projectmessiah German fansubs who did a decent translation and encoding overall)

First I read the superior manga before I watched the anime or else I'd given it a higher score. The reason is I didnt like how they modified some aspects of the manga story to make it less tragic in the anime and also that they included some extra characters, one of which (Brit chick Angela) wasnt needed at all. Having two female apprentices ruined the anime. Yume and her instructor would suffice even if it the anime had to last only 6 episodes.

Fortunately most of the successful manga elements are present in the anime adaptation and are developed even more. Like the way magic could fit into modern life and in the anime even superior radar technology is used to detect any magical energy. It is just that the anime had the potential to be much better but somewhere around the middle they ruined this opportunity. Also it mattered that I knew before why Yume's instructor was so depressive and in the anime the final episodes didnt impress me at all. In the manga this was tackled in a darker and much more efficient way. Also the episode with the old lady completely dissapointed me. If you've watched that anime episode read also the manga chapter to see how it should have been developed. This chapter boosted the manga enjoyment a lot. But it made the anime reach a stalemate instead.

Also animation was mediocre. Lipsync was non-existant so that I thought I had CPU lags in the media player initially. Visually though I had no complaint. Colouring was vividly applied and the characters expression were also effective and realistic.

These were the major drawbacks.
On the positive side there is Yume's character. Though she isnt such a crybaby and well designed as in the manga she is the a good character overall and acts more mature, though her ''antennas'' werent that tall in the manga.

Also the Director Ginpun was female in the manga. I wonder why they gave her that kind of voice in the anime. Sometimes I cant understand anime producers.

Oyamada, Yume's instructor, didnt catch my interest as in the manga and most of the other characters as well, with the exception of Katou, though that kind of clothing in the anime wasnt needed, giving reason for various chatter between two women, about Oyamada's sexual preferences in the second episode.
I'd describe Yume overall as the exactly opposite of Lina Inverse.

In the sound department the series excels. Not only a very good OP and ED theme but piano tunes, violins, harps are used effectively overall. In the music department it comes close to Haibane Renmei in many points.

A watchable anime but better read or buy the manga. It could have been so much better had it stayed faithfull to the manga in crucial points.

I have had this anime in my collection for a long time, but only watched it recently. What initially intrigued me about this anime was the opening karaoke. It made me think that the animation quality, the story and the sound were all top notch. While it turns out that this was not the case, the series is still good, and worth watching at least once.

The animation for this series is on par with most other series that I have seen, except for some repetitive motions that did not fit the sounds and a lack of mouth movement at a distance. During many scenes, two characters would be talking but it looked like the video was displaying a still picture. The sound, however, was phenomenal. Yume's voice was nice. Somewhat deep and husky, yet still feminine. The music during the anime fit perfectly, and it probably has my favorite Op and Ed. My only complaint was Angela's voice, which was a whisper no matter what emotion she felt.

The story is kind of a mixed bag. At parts it was really good and drew me in and made me feel the emotion of the characters. Most of the individual plots in the episodes were well done, but the overarching plot failed to interest me until the last two episodes.

The creators did a very good job of making the main character dynamic and progress through the series. She really only overcame one obstacle, but the series did a good job with her growth and transformation in that one aspect. The rest of the characters are fairly static, but each is given his or her own episode to progress a little and each adds a bit to the overall enjoyment of the series.

A contemplative show; it doesn't progress very fast or get all that far but there are some very touching moments. Towards the end (ep 10 and 11) I wanted to shake Yumi, but I can understand how she felt. It's difficult when something you put your feelings into becomes broken. Fortunatly, Zennosuke was there to provide the wisdom that Yumi was sorely in need of. Overall, what I liked about this show was the messages, which resonated strongly with me. Although the characters had a hard time seeing it, I think the author firmly beleived that if you want something, you should do the best you can with your own power, and I like that.

I got to know Someday's Dreamers when my sister went to Germany and asked if there was some manga I would like her to get for me. SD was a nice two volume series, so I asked her to bring them. A little time later I found myself ordering the dvds. Funny, this life.

Someday's Dreamers is about Yume, an aspiring mage in training. Her goal is to make everyone happier with her magic but, as she soon notices, making people happy is a bit trickier than you'd think. The world is much like today's world except there are people with magical capabilities. I liked how they made it completely natural to have mages around. There are some references to treaties, conferences and generally a huge organization behind them, which makes the setting so realistic that I have no trouble imaging life being like that if true magic existed. The world isn't explained too clearly and many things remain a mystery making the resemble Haibane Renmei a lot. I didn't mind, this is a story about people and their feelings.

The cast of SD is very likeable. Yume is model of a lovable girl with good intentions in her heart. Rooting for her is as natural as breathing. She also gets a lot of damage from her encounters with people and in the end, I really got the feeling that she had changed and learned a lot. Her guardian, Masami, is the troubled bishounen type. The viewer gets only little hints of some trouble until the final episodes, but I was happy to notice the huge difference in him in the last episode. Something as small as the way a person smiles can really make him look very different. The one responsible for my favourite episode of the series is Angela, another mage in training with quite a different attitude than Yume. She's quiet and takes being a mage as a job, not a calling as Yume. She's also very straightforward and that puts up a very impressive confession of love in one of the episodes. I was rather open-mouthed thinking mostly "how cool can a girl get". There's a lot of other people around from regular staff to customers who all get a rather short (it's only 12 episodes) but thorough handling. I think there was not person I didn't like in the series. Okay, the woman who was nasty to Yume was a bit annoying but she was on the screen, what, 20 seconds? She doesn't count!

The story is basically about how Yume learns some lessons and becomes a mage. There's no great destinies or plot twists. Just life. What I liked too, having read the manga, was the fact that even if the big elements are the same, the anime is completely different from the manga. It's like getting two great versions of the same story.

I have nothing to complain on the animation department. Only the character designs aren't as appealing as in the manga (they're good anyway) but otherwise the series looks good. The magic effects are kind of nice too. Since they really are only effects in the series' world too, it's kind of fitting them to be so effect-like. Music is nice and mostly peaceful bringing out the mood of the series well. The opening song is fun, because it doesn't start to roll properly at any time but is still very catchy.

It is easy to recommend Someday's Dreamers to anyone who liked the slow pace and characters of Haibane Renmei. Rather than forcing me to see the next episode, SD just kind of captured my heart and didn't let go.

One of the closest series to Miyazaki's/Studio Ghibli movies I've ever seen, Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto plenty deserves the label of a gem.

And with its somehow unique style, it nearly reaches the perfection, missed just for some minor flaws.

But overall one of those rare and unforgettable character development oriented, and wise story progression shows.

Overall this is a wonderfully made anime, with is lush detail, sound, and story. Probably the only set back was the uneventful story line. with such a loveable character....not much really happens......this anime had potential but just couldnt bring out its best.

i was actually hoping for a more deeper plot. it seemed.......vague.

"Things Precious to A Mage"

With _Someday's Dreamer_ (_Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto_) we get a rather heart-warming tale of a likeable girl named Kikuchi Yume who is training to become a certified mage. The world portrayed seems to be modern Tokyo, but in this world we have people that have something called "Special Power", some kind of magical innate ability. These people, called mages, are pretty much restricted as to when and how they can use their powers.

One thing that is brought up early are ethical and moral dilemmas. In part, this is a coming of age for the main protagonist, where she becomes conflicted between what she wants to do to help the people right in front of her or following the laws that mages must follow.

On the other hand, this series also shows how Yume touches other people's lives. Basically, how she helps other people in little, and at the end, in great ways.

Unfortunately, because of how short the series is (12 episodes), it really doesn't go too deeply in the hows and whats of the Bureau of Mage Labors or the history of the how the mages came to be. Fortunately, the series delves deeply into personal issues, relationships and interactions.

This series is also quite slow paced and the magical elements seem quite "magical-girl"like. It doesn't pull its punches and shows the darker and crueler sides of humanity, but it doesn't dwell on those and usually focuses on the lighter sides. It also features a rather large amount of characters for a 12 episode series. If you don't need action, violence, or ecchi, and want something that is throughly heartwarming without becoming too depressing, I recommend giving _Someday's Dreamer_ a try.

Someday’s Dreamers is a light hearted anime, albeit a little uneventful.

I honestly expected more form this anime, I thought there would have been a deeper storyline, but it was pretty shallow in the end. The start of this anime had a weak story – each episode is its own, there was no cliffhanger at the end of each episode that makes one episode string with the next. This only happened until the last 3 or 2 episode or so.

A shame, because the main character was so adorable and lovable, so were a few of the other characters, but the story they inhibited didn’t allow them to bloom like they should have.

The sound was heavenly, I loved the theme tune and couldn’t get fed up with it.

Ultimately, the story was a let down for me, everything else was in place, but with one important ingredient gone, the formula didn’t work. Wishing for a masterpiece? This isn’t it.

Now, this is a strange little anime, Someday Dreamers (SD) is a heart-warming little magical drama series, it looks into the aspects of magic and real life events/situations and how this little girl, Yume, deals with them with her special power.

The animation is superb, crisp, clear and the CG used is great and the animation and art can't be faulted at all. The OST is clam, relaxing, mellow and the ED song 'Under the Blue Sky' is just great to listen to, the scenery and music blends well together to create a generally peaceful atmosphere in the anime.

As said, this anime is basically the struggles of magic in life, i.e. using magic to payback someone or whether using magic is actually morally wrong or right. These little questions pops up and how the anime deals with them is generally 'ok', its not spectacular or anything but how it deals with these situations deserves some praise. However, the mini-stories sometimes just feel like 'filler', though not filler in the sense its ruining the overall plot (there isn't one) but in the sense it just feels like the creators didn't put much of their efforts in some episodes over others and they just wanted to create something without putting too much emphasis on the idea in it.

Character-wise, Yume is a great looking girl and her almost angsty look in life is greatly looked into, though not much background development was involved (though the series did hint on it a bit). The other characters did their job, with the expected ending of helping one of her main side characters, things almost felt rushed and development were woefully short due to the length of the series. More episodes should have helped this along.

There is some enjoyment out of SD, it can sometimes be funny, emotional or just heart-warming, great factors linking in with creating a good drama, however, SD's main problems were length and character development, if more was created, the score would have changed.
Note: Last DVD (last 3 episodes) were very very good, which pushed it to my score, otherwise it would have received a woefully un-deserving average score.

7/10
Grade: B-

This anime, though a little slow at times, is simply a good anime. The characters are likable, and you find yourself rooting for each one in turn. The animation was very smooth, among the best i have seen in a while. There does not seem to be an overall major plotline, simply mages living in the modern world. It gives watchers a lot of insight into life. The underlying message seems to be that not even magic can solve everyones problems. Overall, I really enjoyed this anime and would recommend it to anyone looking for a simple, beautiful, story.

It's been a while since I've seen anything that gave me a warm fuzzy feeling inside of me. This series shows a beginning of a greater journey for a mage whose job is to help people using her special powers.

This series felt extremely humane to me. The main character Yume is extremely likeable from the very beginning. Her innocence could make anyone's heart melt. As her training as a mage is a treat to watch. he anime goes through some very valuable life lessons, through Yume's eyes which renders itself on not being preachy. The many points made in this anime is what I loved about the series and compliments a lot for the writing and directing.

The visuals are fantastic, especially in the scenes when special powers are being used, and the OST is downright fabulous.

In conclusion the series is wonderfully presented with a lot of human growth and honestly made me feel how beautiful this world is.

(Only other series that made me actually think like that was Kino no tabi.)

this is a VERY GOOD series and i recommend all mature people to watch it... this is not anime for your kids, nor will your kids understand the whole thing the way it's meant to be.. that said..

animation was brilliant, as i have the dvd's everything was very will drawn

music is awesome, i suggest whoever buys this anime should also buy their soundtrack as it's very calm and peaceful music matching totally with the anime itself

story was very good overall about this girls becoming an official mage, but if they could extend to a full 26 eps it would have been better

characters are well developed right from the beginning, drawings are pleasing to the eye and nothing overexaggerated

collectable value? of course! this is a great series to watch! learn something about the heart and become more sympathetic

overall i enjoyed this anime and so should you, but it's best not to let little kids watch this because they won't understand the meaning in this series

This is a very enjoyable fluffy anime - by fluffy I mean that it leaves you feeling good without delving too deep into the human psyche. The main character, Yume, is very sweet (maybe a little too sweet)

This anime borders on being very cheesy, but managed to maintain my interest and I felt very satisfied after completing the series. The story does a good job of looking at all the characters' problems and finding a feel-good solution to them.

I gave the show average marks since I felt that nothing particularly stood out as exceptionally good or amazing, but the sound, animation, music, and characters all worked well with the story – nothing was really out of place.

This anime if not nearly as good as Fruits Basket, but I would still recommend it if you are looking for something cute but not over the top.

This is trully a beautiful anime, with beautiful music and characters as well.
To me, everything about this anime was perfect. I liked that they didn't rush the ending, however this anime seemed too short. The story lacks alittle though, but most stories do. And I really like these kind of animes, nice a slow paced, yet peaceful and warming.

I just wish there would be more episodes, something about this was too short. At least 16 episodes? That might have been a bit better.

I love piano and violin music, and all of that fit this anime very well. The opening theme is beautiful as well as the animation. The ending theme as very good as well.

I recomend Someday's Dreamer to everyone, and I hope you liked it as much as I did! Something that will make you warm inside! And yes, this anime may be for more 'mature' people, even though I'm only 11 I enjoy drama. The main reason this could be for a mature audience is mainly because it has really no comedy, its mainly drama, it just seems like an adult anime. Not because its hentai or anything, its just very dramatic.

I had a feeling like this anime would be good. Somehow, I may have expected too much from it and it disappointed a little bit.

The story was probably the weakest part in the series. It was timely paced, and the story revolved around Yume getting accepted to do her test. Unfortunately, not much happened in the middle. Still, there was a little character developement. Somehow, the writer did not really want to introduce much of any characters' background to you until it seemed too late for anyone to care or for it to make it worth introducing.

The music is nice as I enjoyed it very much. It fit the anime very well.

I feel it may have been too short and that something was missing from it. Perhaps if it was extended another season, it may have got it's point across a little better? Well, in the end, it was direct to the point.
