| My absolute favourite anime - beautiful soundtrack, captivating story, brilliant setting. Most of all it is a reflection provoking piece of art that you'll remember forever.
Wolf's Rain is basically a story about individual freedom, humanity and great mystery of the universe. And really watch it, it doesn't matter how old are you!

| I don't know how VmZ below me managed to mistake this for a shounen anime--it's clearly a seinen. Indeed Kiba's goal--reaching paradise--is stated early on and maintained throughout the anime, but a shounen wouldn't usually have this level of ambiguity about whether that goal is a good thing. Few shounen would have this sort of a post-apocalyptic feel, or take place in such a decaying society filled with greed and corruption and chaos and hopelessness. However, VmZ does get one thing right. Wolf's rain is crap.
Wolf's Rain tries to be a serious, character-driven epic, set in a complex fantasy world where every action has philosophical meaning. It falls painfully short in all of these goals, except perhaps the seriousness bit.
The characters aren't really thin, it's more that they're inconsistent and amateurishly written. For example, in episode six (Don't worry, I'm not spoiling anything except about 5 minutes of episode 6) there's a pack of "fallen wolves" who have lost hope and become jaded. A group of these wolves sells out Hige, one of the main characters, by trapping him such that humans can capture him. Now the fallen wolves in this group, as far as I can tell, believe that their actions are their only option--their attitude when capturing Hige is one of cynicism, and they scoff at Hige's idealism. But then Hige calls them lower than humans, and the attitude of the group's leader makes a complete 180, leading him to punch Hige. The reasonable reaction for the leader would have been to continue his cynical attitude and call Hige an idealist--I was baffled as to why he changed so suddenly. But then again, every character in in Wolf's rain is inconsistent, so I wasn't really surprised.
The story is similarly weak and amateurish--people do things because they randomly want to (e.g. Hige showing up at Kiba's cell in episode 1), people who were going in completely different directions in a vast region conveniently find each other (e.g. at the end of the Jaguara arc), the list goes on. The political structures and the technology are never explained. Lots of plot happens, but nothing is tied together very well across episodes. The only overarching goal or conflict that might drive the story forward and keep a viewer interested is Kiba's 'paradise', but the explanation of paradise was so vague that I couldn't make myself care about it. And without any realism--without any clear rules about the way magic, science or society operated--the philosophy in this anime was lost on me. An anime needs to convince me that it's operating rationally before it can make me question my own beliefs.
On the other hand, this anime did a decent job of portraying the hopelessness and degeneracy of the world. It makes you think about what happens when people have nothing to lose, and nothing to gain. If anything, the occasional moments of this were what kept me going through the series.
Animation was decent. For a 2003 anime it looks like it came from the '90s. However, I think the use of dull colors and darkness fit well with the atmosphere, and I didn't notice any obvious mistakes.
I'd say the music in this anime is one of Yoko Kanno's weaker works, although that still makes it very good music. There were a few instances where music had a vocal part at the same time that somebody was trying to talk. The voice acting was fine; the opening and ending weren't really my style.
Overall, if you're looking for a serious anime but can't think of anything else to watch, then this may be an option for you. But only if you can't think of anything else.

| Storyvice this is just like your basic shonen crap. The goal is clearly stated at the very first episode, and then the characters just meet random people and do random shit to achieve this goal. However how Wolf's Rain differs from this irritating formula is that it does it in 30 episodes, and doesn't need 200+ episodes like your basic mainstream crap.
But still... Even 30 episodes is too much to withstand.

| I struggled greatly with the first few episodes of the series, where it failed to spark my interest. Upon finishing, however, and looking back it has become a great anime. The story is what kept me moving along. Though many parts were difficult to understand, the basic plot came through with shining colors and motivated me to continue, at times compelling me to continue to the next episode.

| Wolf Rain, well lets just say I didn't like it... For 4 years!
Don't get me wrong, it wasn't because I saw it, i was quite the opposite, it was because I never saw it. I did catch a couple episodes on "Adult Swim" on cartoon network, but I could never understand the story or anything, I changed the channel. I was always interested, but not enough to buy it.
But, on impulse when seeing the (2004) limited collectors edition at a store (it was earlier just this year(2007)), I bought it. I usually don't do this.
But OH MAN! am I glad I did!! This has an epic story line (when seen from beginning to end) great action, and amazing character development with animation and music to die for!
I watched the whole anime in ONE sit in, because the story is SO enthralling!
On a whim, and almost not being able to watch this masterpiece, I thank my internal instincts for helping me find this anime!
Truely one of the best I have ever seen.

| WR has amazing climate, its music is first class and animation is very good (especially wolves, moves of their bodies are realistic, I have german sheepdog, which resemble real wolf so I could compare). Message of this anime is similar to philosophical essays of Albert Camus, fate has right to crush a human, but one shouldn't just sit and wait for it to happen. He should fight as long as he lives, even if he knows that this battle is already lost. I watched whole series only three times but it isn't series which could be watched often, after all it seems to be drama. In my opinion it isn't so dramatic, altough none of them reach his goal they at least had that chance and they were happy being able to try. WR is one of that anime which I will never forget.

| When I had first seen the fansub trailer for this series, I knew it was something I was going to love. The animation by BONES looked stunning, the music was done by Yoko Kanno, and the story just seemed so original. And I was right on all accounts.
That being said, this is not an anime for those looking for good action or something to cheer them up (though it has elements of both, however little). At its core, it is an intensely emotional drama - sad, gritty, angsty, ultimately extremely powerful. The score no doubt helps heighten these feelings.
The series might leave you feeling a little numb, from sheer awe and disbelief, but I often think about how I want to show it to everyone I know.

| "There's no such place as Paradise... At the ends of the earth, there's nothing at all. No matter how far you walk, the same road just keeps going on and on. But in spite of that... Why am I so driven to find it? I hear someone's voice calling to me... It says, "Make your way to Paradise!"".
This is one kind of those shows, which I'd call strong in all respects. Unfortunately, even though it's good at everything it does, it's not particularly amazing at anything. The story is pretty original and what's important - filler-free. It goes around a bunch of wolves, who are searching for a Paradise, which can only be opened by none other than the wolf. These wolves are quite special though, they can turn into the human forms at their will, fooling their surroundings easily. All of the more important characters are pretty well portrayed and easy to relate to. Unfortunately, no particularly great characters are around, the type who'd make you addicted to the show. On the other hand the story of the Wolf's Rain is good enough to keep your interest on, so addicting characters are pretty much unessential. After all I did enjoy this show pretty much, it's one of the better shows I have seen, yet it didn't stand a chance to get in my top 10 favourite list.
If you are up for a solid show, then Wolf's Rain is your best choice. I can barely imagine a show which is more refined in all aspects than this. From fluid animation and pleasant sound, to interesting story and likeable characters, this show is good whichever angle you'd try to look from.

| Wolf's Rain didn't deliver much in the sense of action but it was certainly a great drama series. I think part of the reason this show has a rather low rating, aside from a supposedly flat lead character, is that people were expecting it to be action-action-action. It certainly has it's moments but it's a more plot driven dramatic sort of action series, but one I really enjoyed.
--ANIMATION--
The animation in this series is about as good as it gets. The enviroments are really well drawn, the characters look great, and snow looks almost real. Everything about the animation is really fluid and well executed. One this that irked me a little when when characters were presented front on their noses had this...weird thing, looked like they were a curled peice of paper, almost. But not really, it isn't much of a bother and certainly didn't hurt the show at all.
--SOUND--
The sound in this show is great. Voice acting is good and the music is top notch, particularly the ED that really captured the theme of the show well. During fights the music creates a sense of tension and other moments it really draws out the emotions in the sequence. Sound effects were good as well.
--STORY--
The story in this show wasn't particularly complex. Every character is trying to reach a fabled land called Paradise for various reasons. Complexity comes in the way that their attempts to reach Paradise always encounter problems. It's simple but good.
--CHARACTER--
I found all the characters in this show really likeable except for Hubb. He just didn't fit into the show. The main characters are all great and go through changes, though they're fairly subtle. Kiba, the MAIN main character, doesn't change much himself but he isn't intended to. Tsume, Hibe, and Toboe, and Quent all experience some growth in the show. Hubb is in love with his divourced wife and he's..I just didn't like him. His story was good but not as compelling as I found the others.
--VALUE--
I found it worth buying. I'll rewatch it eventually, but the lack of a complex story makes it so I probably won't be doing so in a while. I have a few other shows in re-watch priority before this.
--ENJOYMENT--
I really, really enjoyed this series. There were 4 recap episodes (15-18) that were just a huge waste of time and if I were watching the series as it was released I'd have been pretty damn annoyed, but I didn't so I could skip those four. Other than those episodes I really enjoyed it.
Wolf's Rain is a great dramatic-action series and I'd recommend it to anybody as long as they weren't expecting the action to play as great a roll as the dramatic part that seems under appreciated. Great series, go watch it.

| For an anime that is more dramatic and isn't littered with action, it actually held my interest. Wolf's Rain isn't one of those types of anime where you can just come in at episode 5 and be able to understand what's going on by the end of it-- you have to sit and watch every one to really get the story.
I liked the story because of all the twists, mysteries, but mainly because of it's complexity. It didn't leave me lost and I could actually understand it. This is one of the few anime that actually has a lot of "usefull" dialogue instead of boring people with useless dialogue. It was something very very different--a lot of people call it weird, but for me, it's unique and interesting. The ending wasn't horrible, and it didn't leave me completely confused...they coulda messed it up really bad. The ending was just....depressing.
The animation was pretty good, especially the backgrounds and environments. I liked how they drew the wolves, especially when they really get pissed off.
The sound was great. Opening and ending themes were good, especially the ending theme, Gravity. It's one of the best anime theme songs and it fit this show perfectly. I loved the music cause it was done by Yoko Kanno [cowboy bebop, escaflowne]
I don't know why some people complained about the main character being "flat." Well, that's his personality. He doesn't say much, but that's who he is. Character development was good, and by the end of the show, you got a feel for almost all the characters. The only character that I couldn't really grasp was Darcia. I couldn't tell whose side he was on at times, and by the end, I didn't know why he was so evil.
Overall, this is one of those anime that you either like it or you don't. If your a person that just doesn't get complex stories, than this is not a show for you. Usually I only like to watch action anime, but this show actually had a unique storyline to hold my interest to the end.

| Wow! What an experience Wolf's Rain has been for me. This is one of those series that stays with you long after the final episode has played out, wich is a good thing and a bad thing. I loved it, but it is so weighty that I honestly cant see myself watching it again anytime soon. That being said you can believe that this is a powerful show that belongs in your anime collection. A lot of symbolism can be taken from the story about mankind and the world we live in,about friendships, about forgiveness, and about tolerance.

| Great presentation visually and especially audioally. The story I guess was there and was acceptable. The characters were fine and you were able to see growth and progression. However, the main character is the greatest flaw of this anime.
This guy literally had two expressions the entire series. His lack of personality and his inability to display any semblance of a spectrum of emotion makes him unlikeable. Because of of him, it shadowed the otherwise acceptable characters in the anime.
This is my reflection looking back after having finished the anime.
I'd have to probably think a bit deeper to express how many problems I had w/ certain events, the story, and the characters in order to truley convey my discontent. I'm not going to go into that sort of detail right now but hopefully the score I give speaks for itself.
*spoiler alert*
Frankly I didn't care about the fact that the author decided to kill off the characters. In fact, by not having to deal w/ that emotional aspect, I was able to appreciate the ending more.
I think this goes back to my dislike of the main character. Anime has become so formulaic. You either have the cocky, self-righteous main character or people like this guy. You'll also find him in games like "Final Fantasy VII, VIII". Characters like him do better as the supporting character such as in Scryed or Gundam Seed.
I liked the ending, but was a bit confused what was the purpose of the very end. Was it a reflection of the past right before everybody met? Did somehow life start all over again? That's where my confusion lies.
*end spoiler*
Edit: Didn't notice that Yokko Kanno did the soundtrack. No wonder it stood out!

| I was very eager to watch this anime - ever since my friend started to rave about it after coming to coll after the vacations. So I got my hands on it and by the end I felt as if I had seen Shakespeare's Hamlet.
Animation
Standard. Does'nt break any new grounds. It is well done though. The people are made drawn very well. All except Cheza, who looked more like a ghost (should've looked like a flower), the animation was well done.
Sound
Lovely music. Both the opening and the ending song very beautiful. The overall music was well done and fit in nicely with 'world going to end' scenario.
Story
Ahhh.... Wolf's Rain has story which goes on at it's own lumbering pace. So it was not surprising that I didnot get hooked up into it. However episode 20 ownwards the story shone BUT only till episode 26. I would have been very happy to leave it there but the final four episodes were out of the blue.
And then the writer went on a killing spree.
Tragedy, tragedy, death, death.... End of the world.
The ending like many other anime (eg. Elfen Lied) is left for the viewer to ponder upon.
Characters
This is where Wolf Rain shines. All the characters - from the good guys (wolves) to the bad guys(nobles) have been developed in a terrific way. By the end - you start to feel for them as well and understand them perfectly. Wolf's Rain is an anime with perhaps the best characters in any anime.
Enjoyment
I do not mind tragedy. I've read a few of em and appreciated them but I cannot stand lead characters who have been developed so nicely being killed of one after another. And that too, for absolutely no apparent reason!!! Not very enjoyable. Left me sad and morose.
Watch this series only if you like sad endings.

| I dont think Wolf's Rain is just an action anime, from my perspective it was more adventure than action with a little of drama in between. The concept of Wolf's Rain is great, wolfs disguised as humans looking for Paradise.
The animation is superb, everything is perfectly done, from the climatic events to the wolf sequences. To me the wolf parts were better animated than the human ones. No complains in character designes, the clothes of the human forms of the wolfs sort of reflect their personalities.
One of the best soundtracks of recent anime. At first I thought it was to "american" because of the english songs they have but the lyrics really get along with the series. The howlings, the sound effects everything was done just perfect.
The story is sort of cliche, I mean a Land in a post-apocalyptic state with persons looking for a better place, but regardless of that it has their original aspects such as the wolves, the Lunar Maiden and that kind of stuff. The main issue of Wolfs Rain is the search of Paradise, and with that comes the quest of 4 wolves to find it.
The characters are great, the main humans had major influence despite what you can think at first sight. What really called my attention was the relationship that the characters built along the series and how their personalities mature, maybe the only character that didn't grow up at all is Kiba, the main character, I mean he acts practilly the same from beginning to end, and if you compare him to Hige,Toboe and Tsume who really changed with all the things they went through together its really disappointing.
Wolfs Rain is a great anime and fun to watch, it has action but I think its more adventure than pure action like I said before. There arent many wolf animes out there and despite of that this one is great. If you are a wolf lover you should really watch this.

| I really wanted to like Wolf's Rain, but, alas, it wasn't meant to be. The redemption from some sort of post-apocalyptic-like state is not exactly a new premise, but is amazing when done well; by the time this show ends, however, I couldn't bring myself to care anymore. While beautifully drawn, and with generally decent music [egads, except the opening theme], the characters were hardly compelling. Granted, the whole ookami bit was nice, but the actual characters...well, I wanted to hit them for making me see some of their events. Nevertheless, there are still some nice sequences and some parts that I'm glad I've seen, but on the whole, I doubt I would recommend this to an average anime fan.

| [UPDATE]:
The last four episodes of Wolf's Rain 27-30 were released after the majority of the series was complete, I think. After watching it, I found that these four episodes alone can/might contain the essence of all of the emotional sadness and courageous hearts of the characters. It is very worth watching the end of their touching journey to Paradise.
Wolf's Rain is like an anime-viewer's dream come true. When I watched it, was so enchanted by this series, resulting in this high score.

| The animation in Wolf's Rain is top notch, that's all I really need to say.. Honestly.
Whenever a blizzard hits, you realize just how much attention to detail went into Wolf's Rain. At one point, I didn't even know that I was looking at an animated snowstorm. It looked REAL.
Characters are all done pretty well, and they all have their own unique appearances, with the exception of Hubb Lebowski who looks like a 1930's cop. I'm sure that this was intentional though.
I really don't know what to say. Landscapes were beautiful, characters looked great, effects were good.. The animation is simply above average.
I adore the sound in this anime. The soundtrack, from the opening and ending themes, to the orchestrated (I believe so) music that played during the episodes, the music knocked my socks off. Top quality stuff here, guys and girls.
Voices were good as well. I didn't listen to the Japanese voices beyond episode one because I enjoyed the dub voice actors more.. I'm not saying that the Japanese voices were bad, no.. The English cast just did such a great job bringing the characters to life for those of us who speak English.
The story is a little odd, but if you pay enough attention to it, you won't have any problems understanding it at all. I won't really go into it for the sake of spoilers, but pay attention to every character who seems fixated on Paradise. You'll pick up on the story easily if you do.
As far as story progression goes, a few "arcs" of the story may feel a little dragged out, but it isn't too bad. As stated in other reviews, there are a few filler episodes in the middle of the series that just recap everything that happened. I watched most of the first one before I realized that it was just recycled scenes, so I skipped over them. Once you hit episode 20, the story really gets interesting and all sorts of new problems emerge..
And then when episode 26 rolls around, things become very, very dramatic. I won't lie, if you do find yourself loving the series up to this point (episode 26 and beyond) you may find some of the following episodes to be tear jerkers. I know I did..
Anyway, the early portions of the series just focuses on building the personalities of the characters. The middle builds on the story, and the last ten episodes puts the pieces of the puzzle together.
The characters in Wolf's Rain were all very well done... With the exception of one. Can you guess who? No, not some random, generic character who only appears every ten episodes. Kiba, the main character, is the one I have in mind. What's wrong with Kiba? Well, he is very bland and one dimensional. Unlike the rest of the cast, his personality never really grows at all. The only thin that is ever on his mind is Paradise it seems. I understood his character, yes, but he was just so shallow and I don't know how this happened considering he is the protagonist..
The rest of the cast is great though. Cher Degre and Hubb Lebowski are simply amazing together, and it isn't until very late in the series that we realize just how much they mean to each other.. Anyone who has watched all of the series will know exactly what I am talking about. The same can be said about Quent the wolf hunter and his dog Blue. They have a very interesting relationship that really grows throughout the series.. The same goes for Toboe and Tsume, believe it or not.
It seems like every character has had a rough life or something that has really messed with their way of doing things, but there is a plus side.. Every character has a shoulder to lean on at some point, and that is a nice thing.
The characters, except for Kiba, are all fantastic and develop an awful lot throughout the series.
I had the option of watching the dub or sub.. I listened to each very closely in the first episode and decided to go with the english dub. Why?
Well, like Cowboy Bebop, Wolf's Rain has a very distinct western feel to it. The voice actors in the dub do a fantastic job, especially towards the end of the series. I might watch the series again with the Japanese voices, but I am still blown away by the fantastic job the English voices did.

| First of, this is one of my favorite animes just to nail it down.
However, that does not mean a full score.
There were flaws and I will mention them.
Overall I thought it was a enjoyable series, but it dragged out too long. It could have been much shorter than 30 episodes, and 4 filler eps were certainly not needed.
Sound was great when it was present, but the lack of sound at times felt more weird than natural.
Animation were fine, except I did have some issues with how the faces were drawn.
As a story I enjoyed it immensly. It ends with tears, so if you dont like sad animes, then there is no real point in watching this one.
As for characters, some were good, and some were poorly. I thougth that the plot with Darcia, Hamona and Jaggura could have been better executed, as they have very little showtime on the series. Especially when they in fact are so involved with the story as they are.
As for the real cast themselves, I thought they performed their roles adequately.
Watch if if you like wolves, end of the world thing, sad and tragic animes, dealing with love and friendships.

| Wolf’s rain is indeed very much like Cowboy Bebop in terms of animation and design, but unlike Cowboy Bebop, this has a much more solid story.
Again, animation is the best aspect, although, if you look closely, it can sometimes be over-simplistic – for example, there were a few scenes where a car does not get smaller as it goes further and its movement really does look like it’s a cardboard cut-out being moved. But characters are very well drawn.
Sadly, I have mixed feelings about the characters themselves, firstly, there’s a teenage boy that really look like a girl. This isn’t my biggest worry, there are characters that are very clichéd and unoriginal, some like Cheza, Blue and Cher which are more interesting, and it’s not coincidence that they are all female either… What is a real let down is the fact that the main character - the poster boy, was the most ordinary and lame character out of the lot!
Sound was a great let down, I really do notice when it is absent, as I don’t feel as emotional as what’s happening onscreen. The opening and ending themes are nice enough.
This anime was really interesting, but just misses out on being great, I love the fact that in this anime, the makers weren’t scared to do things with the characters and expose them to any danger which do have their grave consequences. However I did feel that the ending, which is so important to me, was not up to my expectation – not saying that it was rubbish by any means.
Edit: after reading Poom’s review, I totally agree with it, I suppose what really made this an overall average or “fairly” good anime is the search for paradise, which didn’t actually become an annoying point until, just like SO many other anime, it got totally ridiculous and so far from the reality that was there to begin with that I loved.
