| I didn't have time to watch the whole movie in one sitting, but from beginning to end, it seemed to ache of longing and loss. With a tint of slice-of-life feeling coupled with stellar animation, Kumo no Mukou is truly a masterpiece.
Set in a divided Japan, the animators paid detailed attention to the setting which drives the emotional aspects of the story. Slow paced, the story lends itself to reflection in its silence.
As Kumo no Mukou is only an OVA, there is not a significant amount of development. At times some of the specifics (scientific etc.) are skimmed over. But it never feels too rushed, and what confusion viewers may feel is overcome by the irresistible lull of its undefinable beauty.
After it's end, there's no aspect of the story that really stood out, but the powerful storytelling makes this OVA truly unforgettable.

| Makoto Shinkai is a genius and will most certainly be a legend in the animation business and in the future for his amazing masterpieces in Voice of a Distant Star, The Place Promised in Our Early Days, and soon to come Byosoku 5 Centimetre. TPPED has great visual arts with excellent detail and background colors. Its music is really soothing to the soul but yet sad at the same time. Some people don't like the story that much or don't like it at all, but I absolutely love its story. Its not complex and hard to understand and its classic in its own way. Their characters are great and really fit the whole film, Hiroki and Sayuri are really adorable. Its value is a 10+ of course. Its a tear jerker alright lolz, and you'll most certainly enjoy this film.

| A poignant, touching movie, Beyond the Clouds lived up to my expecations. The word "beautiful" has its fingerprints all over the animation, the music, the voice-acting, the entire movie.
Beginning with the animation...where to even start. Stunning, amazing, gorgeous; especially the scenery. I was left aghast with all the subtleties, all the details, that were given to each and every frame. The unique blend of colors and contrasts was astounding, making for breathtaking scenes of sunsets, melting snow, even train tracks. Really, this is probably some of the best animation I have ever seen.
And not only that, it's coupled with a serene, beautifully composed soundtrack. The violin and piano singles are not only perfect for the movie but perfect in general; absolutely gorgeous to listen to. In fact, during the ending credits I just closed my eyes and enjoyed listening. The music creates a very emotional, yet calm, atmosphere that pervades throughout the ninety minutes. It's overall very relaxing and melancholic. In addition, the Seiyuu voicing the characters is one of the best I have experienced. Just as the animators captured every little niche of the scenery, the voice actors bring alive all aspects of their characters. The monologues are gentle and poetic and fit each character like a glove.
The story actually isn't all that romantic, though it is emotional. While a bit of the quantam physics jargon could have been excluded, overall I have no real complaints, especially for a movie. The story was supposed to have a dreamlike feel to it and, through the animation, music, and voice acting, it definitely did just that. It's not the actual story, but how it is developed, which is so wonderful.
Top this off with three fabulous main characters as well, all which are given a nice amount of depth in both their childhood and adult scenes. I have no real complaints here; all the characters are done and done very well. We have three friends who have a dream to fly to a tower far off in the distance, and are building an airplane to do so. Yet, when this dream falls through, the struggles the characters go through are brought to life and are very touching. Much of this credit can be given to the voice actors; splendid work.
In my opinion, a must see for just about everyone. You'd be doing yourself a disservice not to watch.
Highly recommended.

| How much is childhood important for an individual? Having a pretty much empty head in the early periods of infancy a person's brain is like a sponge. Via the period of growth it sucks tremendeous amounts of information, which is later used for an individual development of that particular living being. Even small things that happened in the past, might weigh a person down more than the ones happening at the moment. Then what is the power of childhood promises? Are they easily forgotten, or do they actually, influence the whole life of a human?
Kumo no Muko, Yakusoku no Basho is a love story, but nothing else. While it has various sci-fi extras and mystical components, in the end they only work in setting the mood for the show. I was both surprised and disappointed at the same time. The love story succeeds in creating a formidable emotional impact in terms of short ovas or movies. Unfortunately, at the same time I was sighing seeing how simple and one sided it actually is. I agree that this movie is good, maybe even great, but that's so for the romance genre lovers. Even though it's memorable, I've never felt directly involved with the movie, I was always seeing myself as a third person spectacting the events.
If you watch anime for romance, then you can't go wrong with this show. It is one of the best love stories anime can offer. On the other hand, if you are a person who finds himself hard to move emotionally, this might not look that great to you. I myself was never touched when watching this movie. On the other hand, the only time I've felt touched by a love story was when I was watching Seikai no Monshou.

| After Hoshi no Koe, I decided to try out Mr. Shinkai's next work: The Place Promised In Our Early Days.
The first thing I was hit with in the first minute? The movie-quality visuals. This IS a movie, I assume (despite the description of being an OVA), so obviously everything is pretty, from the backgrounds to the snow to the character designs to the lighting effects and fluid movements. The second is the abundance of piano pieces and violins scattered throughout the movie. They're all evoking, great, very slow, and sad.
However, this is a slight disappointment from HnK in the next two categories. Once again, sci-fi comes into play, but this time more believable than the alien-thing (except that it's still a little absurd and the conference explaining the 'parallel worlds' flew over my head). The political situation sort of ups the tension by introducing the fear of characters being killed off, but fortunately that's not the case. The sci-fi, though, is only a minor aspect to the story - TPPIOED focuses on the link between the 3 main characters and the naive promise they make. The childish dream they had (and eventually made reality) really says that generations take things for granted, even if they are supposedly used for evil purposes. Even through years of suffering and depression, our heroes live on to fulfill that promise eventually when the time comes when they are able to. Though sometimes the story is confusing with the timeskips and lack of explanation, it's still a good story to explore the minds of people with childhood promises and the effects the environment has on them. As for why it's slightly disappointing - HnK can do more in 25 minutes than what 90 minutes of TPPIOED can: the crying part and the introductions.
A nice film overall, but I have no great expectations for Mr. Shinkai's next project: 5 Centimeters Per Second.

| Makoto Shinkai has done it again.
He has made an anime with beautiful characters, superb music, and a touching story about love and innocence that will always be remembered.
The Place Promised in Our Early Days was a wonderful love story that did something that most animes do not.
It moved me.

| Like all of Makoto Shinkai's work, Kumo no Muko, Yakusoku no Basho requires an attentive audience. Unlike a lot the anime (I've seen), very little is said twice. Often, I've found that animes will spend a lot of time simpy attempting to drive one point through in a repetitive manner (namely those in-fight monologues). Makoto Shinkai does not do this. Even if the plot is not exactly action filled, Kumo no Muko moves quickly (but not too quickly), as does the character development. Thus, I get the feeling that many of you will watch the movie and get lost in the complexity of the plot; come prepared!
Makoto Shinkai's main strength in this film was the organic quality: I felt that each scene was necessary; that each scene belonged there. The sounds fit the mood perfectly.

| Why should this anime be so underrated I don't know, but this is something really special lover of anime or any feature film should definitely give this anime a try. Not for those who require comedy or action, however this anime does have great animation, solid and touching storyline with well blended sci-fi element, and some interesting characters that can really drown you into their world for an hour and thirty minutes.
This movie takes place after a war I believe, which caused a division between North and South Japan at a standoff. International forces are involved in this conflict as well to destroy the tower that can change matters into the matters in the parallel universe that exist along with their world. The activation of the tower however is closely related to this one call named Sayuri and her dreams.
Having said that this anime does get into a bit too much on its sci-fi talk and do not explain enough for us to totally grasp the situation. However from the beginning the makers make it clear that the north and south is in conflict. and that tower might be something that's related to the conflict. Is it a weapon? or is it something else?
Unlike the reviews below I didn't think the whole tower issue was trivialized enough to turn me away. Like I admitted it could have used more explanation, but there enough for us to feel for the situation at hand as you will realized as anime plays on.
Besides the focus of the anime really does not rely on the whole trivial war theme. It is eccentially about friendship and love. If some little trivial issue is bringing down the experience of the anime so much, I have to say the watcher must be missing the point.
What gets tested in this anime is not the technological conflict but the bond between two friends and conflicts in their souls in regarding their friend Sayuri who forever sleeps. The story is told so well and presented in such a desperate manner I was forced to be drawn in to this anime entirely and could not let my eye deter away from the screen.
The maker truly do a good job in making us getting emotionally conncet to the characters through realism. Ofcourse there are sci-fi elements that don't make much sense, but the emotions are very real. there are those who are able to overcome the tragic and those who cannot. There desires and beliefs are all too real for us to ignore. Dialogues are not over the top and are not too cheesy to make the whole thing a joke.
How does the director then do this? He does it through wonderful animation and music that sets the mood perfectly. Every emotional scene some amazing animation and music will trasfer the feelings to its viewers. The one scene where the two friends are in the garage with their plain while its snowing will stay in my mind for a very long time.
Now on that note the animation is amazing. I like the animation in Hoshi no Koe, and I really love the animation in here. I really do think this is the most impressive animation I've seen. It's not a CGI wonder like Appleseed, or fantasy galore in Spirited away, but something that just impresses you in a very grand yet calm way (I'm not making any sense). The music by Tenmon is great here. However it is a shame the music sounds very similar from Hoshi no Koe. He could've wrote something that sound a bit different at least.
Overall this is one of the most impressive animes I've seen. Though there are too much sci-fi elements that do not get throughly covered, that really is not the focus of this anime. Focus is on a relationship between 3 friends torn apart by tragedy, and their desire to recover what is lost. It is wonderfully told in this anime. animation and music is a perfect compliment. This is a must see.

| (Triad's fansub. To me Triad are of the best fansubbers as every release is carefully edited, with good English)
The reviewers below cover extensively the drawbacks and merits of this movie. But since I havent seen ''Voices of a distant star'' yet, I cant draw comparisons.
The movie starts out promisingly with the animation and the characters instantly winning my attention. Then suddenly after the moment the message ''3 years later'' appears I lost the plot completely. The young girl suddenly is in some weird place and the childhood friends are separated. Then some Tower with the ability to absorb space appears (what use has such a dangerous uncontrollable device in our world?) and then I learn that Japan is divided between North and South, the North been with the Union (probably Eurasia) and the South with America. Then war is ready to brake out and the old childhood friends seek a way to put things straight between them and also to save the world.
They've made a mess with the story obviously and from one point I was paying attention only to the visuals. The ending was nice and the ED songs memorable. The character designs were of the best I've seen but the voice actors mediocre and uninspiring.
Overall for me after watching it once, I'm sure that VoDS will be much better and I'll watch this with much more interest. I wonder why this movie was awarded being the best of 2004...Either the rest of good movies were ignored, or they were even worse than this. I'll never bother with it again, except some nice screenshots.

| From the maker of Voices of a Distant Star comes another visually striking and almost ephemeral tale of love set in the future. The two share a similar attitude and theme, but the extended length of this work compared to Voice is its downfall, given that not much more is explored when you compare the two. The plot is barely given any effort; why would a government built a massive (read 20+ km tall) tower whose only purpose seems to be to replace the area around it with that of an alternate universe from a little girls dreams? Powerful, sure, but utterly pointless. In the beginning I was intrigued, speculating on all the directions this could be going, but ultimately that part of the story is basically trivialized.
Maybe the meaningless technology would work better in a wackier story, but this anime takes itself very seriously. The animation style reflects that: very lovely, realistically lighted and drawn scenery. It's really quite beautiful, with reflections playing off of this and that, and everything looking vibrant. However, it's a story of young love that barely develops, and proves unsatisfying overall. That lacklustre core makes all the beautiful scenery and barely developed background story seem especially tedious.

| One can say that Makoto Shinkai's biggest problem in _The Place Promised in Our Early Days_ is his approach of treating his animation as a serious piece of art rather than as a means of entertainment. Hence, this 90-minute film is filled with slow moving pans across breath-taking backdrops and sometimes poetic sounding voice overs. The story moves at a very leisurely rate, and some scene changes, expecially when the movie blacks out for a few seconds, seem rather disruptive to the overall flow. With a slow and lazy first act about childhood memories, a middle act that ramps up the drama by, well, grazing in a pasture with some sci-fi techno-babble, and a very subdued and understated last act, and the fact that the movie heaps mysteries over mysteries at the viewer, finally resolving some of them at the end, it is not going to garner many fans immediately. It really doesn't have much of what would be traditionally entertaining, if any.
There is at least one thing to be said about _The Place Promised in Our Early Days_: It has earned the distinction of being one of the only very few works of art to reduce a 26-year-old man to tears in the morning a full 10 hours after he watched it for the fourth time.
That story goes like this: After a restless night sleeping, my alarm went off to wake me up at the normal time. Instead of immediately getting up (or hitting the snooze alarm to get 5 more minutes of sleep), I turned the alarm off and laid there staring at my ceiling, thinking about this impressive movie I've been fascinated by for the past week. It doesn't have the immediate emotional punch of his earlier, single-man works, but it managed to make my mind reel. It affected my work and my social life, because I couldn't stop thinking about it, even if there is much I could criticize it for.
Then it hits me. Thoughts about the movie led to the realization of my own lonely life. My own depressed childhood was thrown in my face. The tears wouldn't stop, and I lay there, curled up in bed, for a good 15 minutes. Sadness, bitterness, anger at being so weak, and finally, comfort. All these emotions were running through my body.
_The Place Promised in Our Early Days_ is a gorgeous film. There's several changes I can talk about that would make this movie a bit more accessable to more people, but I will talk about that later. It requires extreme amounts of patience and attention to what the admittedly generic characters are saying and where the plot is going, but at its heart is a rather simple love story. I highly recommend at least renting or borrowing this anime just to check it out. At least watch for the stunning backdrops that could be hung in an art gallery and pay attention to the masterful use of lighting. It may bore you. It may even put you to sleep. Then again, it might fascinate you. It might draw you into its world. It might even move your heart.
Until then, I'll be waiting at the place of promise, beyond the clouds.
Now, excuse me, as I'm late for work... ;)

| Although not quite as good as Hoshi no Koe (Voices From a Distant Star), this is pure genius. There is some discussion on the interweb atm about video games and whether or not they are art. My definition of art is when you look at something (painting, movie, game, whatever) and are changed, it's art. I was waiting a long, long time for TPPIOED to get released. I downloaded the 3 trailers as they were released. (And didn't the story change between 1 and 2?) I downloaded the first available fansub. I watched it as soon as it was completed. I was almost expecting a disaster. I was transfixed! I couldn't move for the duration of the movie. When it was finished I was in a state of flux for 30 minutes. I needed to talk to someone, anyone, about it. But I was the only member of my family to see it. I posted on the 5ml forum (Australia) and was flamed for my reaction. Why? "Oh", they say, "it's so slow". Well, EXCUSE ME! Granted, some of the middle third, the dodgy pseudo physics, I'll give you. Yes I wish Shinkai Makoto had the sense to control that, but it is an essential part of the story. Yes, some of the animation of back up characters is less than perfect. OK? Happy now? But the overall feeling when the movie has ended, and I admit, this is me, is one of having seen something genuinely great. I watched it for the first time on DVD tonight (the 4th overall) and it is just as effective dubbed. My wife watched it with me (my son got bored halfway through) and was affected but got up and walked away afterwards whilst I was busy crying!
So, if it gets to you, it'll change your life. If not, and you'll be in the majority, check out the awesome eyecandy!
The new Miyazaki?
NO!!!!!
The first Shinkai!
(All great anime directors should never be compared to others. )
And I almost forgot the music!
When the violin theme kicks in, if you cry, it's gotcha!
Additional comment. Shinkai Makoto's movies are great because of his attention to detail and his abilty to tell a story, NOT BECAUSE OF HIS CGI, cockbites! This is the first time he has collaborated with others during the production of a movie and I put all the blame for the occasionally dodgy animation on the collaborators (seeing as we've already seen the meister at work in solo mode)

| you can't help but like what this guy does with this cg effects.
a bigger and more epic piece that holds a lot of fundamental similarities with this last work, he really gives the viewer an atmosphere worth remembering.
But in attempting a larger piece, he loses what he was able to create in something smaller. While some scenes were well done, others could have been shorter, more to the point and less meadering. Our beloved creater uses this time almost as an exploration of the limits of his style, and unfortuantly at times we find them closer than we'd like. He basically gives himself plenty of room to succeed, but a lot of room to fail.
It's hard though, since his original works were too small for themselves, but that made them so deep and rich. Nothing was spared in his orginal works and every second was masterful. however his original works are more simple, less daring, and play on ideas previously flushed out. He did them well, but he didn't get credit for creating something more. but citing his circumstances for his original work, it's hard to legitimize criticsm.
In The place promised in our early days, i became disatisfied with some themes present in it, that are so common in dramatic animes today. that in itself was a let down, since his style of art and story telling seemed like it would avoid that kind of blatant melodrama in place of the subtle mood setting minimalism he seemed to express earlier. However, you can't blame him too much for that, yet still... In it, he does some wonderful things, and avoids some huge pitfalls, which include creating an amazing flying machine (2nd only to miyazaki's glider for naasica) and his ability to create a world so special and private for the viewer. But as this is a sci fi anime, the main element of conflict in its world is hard to explain simply, and almost trails into too much techno mumbo jumbo, potentially distancing its relavence from teh story's main conflict between the characters.
But even these distractions really don't take away from the beautiful scenery and world.
His style seems limited to an indie scene and remains far to artistic and quiet to become wideviewed for long, but i'd love to see this side of his work more than i would a pumped up version for mainstream consumption.

| Okay, TPPIOED is a good little romance. As usual, since it is done by Makoto Shinkai it has beautiful animation. The characters are likeable. The music is great as well. However, the story grew a little hard to follow at times, but once you got the underlying plot that was basically all that was important. Altogether, not as good as Voices of a Distant Star in the least, but a nice job for his first feature length, watch it at least once, you may want to buy it for the visuals.

| I had heard a lot about it, but I'm not a big fan of stand alone OVAs. Pretty good story, an interesting concept of a parallel universe and its connection with dreaming. Some of the scenes switched back and forth too quickly for my brain to read and comprehend it, so I found the pause button quite useful.

| *On a scale of 1-10 I rate 5 as average, please note this when reading my review*
I must say that I was really impressed with this OVA and it excceded my expectations.
On a visual level this anime has great animation, one of the best I have seen this year. The animation is detailed and lots of different techniques are used to show the mood of the show at the time, which is done very effectively.
The characters were likeable and the character development during the show is what moved the show along. The pacing for the show also was good and it never dragged anything long unless it was necessary.
I really don't have much bad to say about this film, it was well paced, great animation and story and the music was also good, however I felt that it was more like a novel than a film at times. Overall, this is a good one that I will keep in my collection for a long time.

| I really thought more of this. Something which could have been easily a classic, ends up as something average.
Don’t get me wrong, there are good points, the animation is sublime, lighting used, colours used and atmosphere generated is unparalleled. But what’s the use of all that when you are frustrated throughout viewing thinking to yourself, what IS this stuff they are talking about? Why did the director allow this meaningless dialogue?
The story is about this parallel world thing, the dialogue is full of things which doesn’t mean much – sci-fi jargon. It felt like a mix of Saikano and Neon Genesis Evangelion, the first I loved, the second, I hated. Started out nicely, but then it got too technical, too abstract, too…weird and branched away form reality.
Unlike Voice From A Distant Star, this was all over the place, loose, incompact. It could have done without a lot of the rubbish that was injected into this.
Another thing that didn’t impress me as much as Voice From A Distant Star was the USE of music, given that Tenmon who worked on that anime and this anime is very talented, this anime sometime lacked the music score to convey life into the lesser scenes.
Overall, not what I expected, I so looked forward to watching this, to be let done by a poor story, which is full of useless scenes. Shinkai Makoto should really try to make a long film not about the sky and space, but about real life relationship, just like She And Her Cat. Cut out the unnecessary things in this film, change the theme, and you’re left with something great.

| this movie was a touching movie in a way even though some people let out some tears in the ending i dont really see why, the ending was not sad at all they both lived, the animation in this anime is very crisp and well dont the charcters are pretty good, the music is its biggest con i think, the music goes great with the movie and it is very well done with the violin and the piano, it was cool how the girl had this connection with the tower and everything, this movie showed how one person was not about to break a promise and he kept that promise i would reccoment watching this anime even though it might not fit in the genre you guys like but it is very worth watching and very enjoyable

| Animation: superb animation!!! beautiful scenes, the finest art! Definitely 10.
But: despite the animation, I was quite bored when watching this anime.
It has an interesting story, but this one would have needed more time to develop. The short time of a movie wasn't enough for it.
No character development, even at the end we know too little about the characters.
And the story has gaps. It should have been a series, if not a long one then at least 6 episodes.
But as it is now, it is just boring.
