(Baka Koroshiya fansubs. Recently finished the project. Very good overall)

Considering this movie was 136 minutes long and it was boring only for a few minutes, it means that the director and the staff have done a great job. This movie deserves to be watched on cinema.

If you liked Fantastic Children, this is another title worth watching. I have to say that I like that peculiar character design a lot. From what I read this film took 10 years to make. It is certainly something new and different from what you see in animated films. Very unique. The director said he was influenced by Miyazaki's work but also by European comics like those of Moebius and the animated movie "Fantastic Planet" (a must-watch).

Because of the length the movie has some issues with pacing, and the main character Palme could have been better. Other characters too. Story is a little messed up.

But if you want to watch animation for its artistic value and are not interested in characters or story that much, this film is one of the best I saw. It has some similarities with "Akira", but I admit that I liked it much more. One of the best post-2000 anime movies.

I wouldnt classify it as a childrens film because it has some violent moments, but so did Princess Mononoke and kids loved that show. Worth to be in your collection.

In short, this was an "Okay" movie.

The movie starts off with a robot, Palme, who becomes active for the first time in years after Xian, the person that he took care for, and who he also "loved", dies. This robot, soon after, comes into contact with an injured warrior who he mistakes for Xian and she sends him on a quest. During this quest, Palme finds many different friends, and goes through many troubles, as well as trying to obtain his goal of becoming human.

This is the basic description of the story and it sounds pretty good, but the story is much more confusing in the movie than it seems. It is because of this, in my opinion, that the movie was very long and drawn out, making me lose interest by the end, even though the ending was very good. Don't misunderstand, the basis of the movie was good and if you ignore the unnecessary parts added into the movie, the story was fine, however, the story could have been compiled much better.

The animation was also very bad for a movie made in its time period. Although most of the backgrounds were very well drawn and motions were fluid throughout the movie, the character models were absolutely horrible. This put me off the most from the beginning of the movie.

The music in the movie was annoying, using basically the same sounds from the beginning to the end (I did like the ending song though; it fit very well into the scene). On the other hand, the character voices were perfectly fine.

As I said before, this movie was okay, but the story could have been much more interesting, instead of making it extremely slow paced and confusing as they did. If only that and the animation could have been worked on, I feel that this show could be one of the best anime movies made.

Good show. I agree that it is more than just a Pinnochio story, which one can easily assume from the box description. Xian as Palme's mistress? I thought he was a care-taker for Xian who was married to the guy they live with. It is a bit long, but not too. Glad to see cell animation opposed to the current CGI trends, which if overdone can ruin the visual, imo. The ending I did not expect. the character development and growth were interesting and are not melo-dramatized. Definately worth a watch. Based on subtitled version.

Definately worth the watch. As cute as the style of the artwork may look, it has a dark, sad undertone underneath it all- all while still keeping a happy ending.
A Pinnochio tale made for young udults, and not 'children's tale' as I thought it would be.

One may consider this to be similar to Pinocchio, but wrong. Sure, the story is about a wooden toy trying to become a human, but it is totally different. It is more like Lain plus akira without excessive violence. The shots are very surreal and symbolic, and at times, the story doesn't give you a clue about time frame.

However, the feeling and atmosphere that the characters create is surprisingly real, and *painful*.

If you want something serious, you'll waht this. I'm surprised that no one wrote a review about this one.

The main character (the wooden toy) shows very human-like: meaning that it(he) goes through a series of carnal desires and shows realistic obsession to become a human.

I'll just summarize that "this is the shit".
