I wish I could see all the 13 episodes but the video club I rented it had only the first 7

But this anime remains faithfull for the most part to the events of Alexander's life as they appear in the ancient documents of his biographer. Adding the sci-fi look and magical rituals gave it a special flavour but I think this was quite unnecessary and they could have just draw things as they appeared 2000 years ago. But nevertheless the animation has something unique and its the first time I've seen such a drawing style.

The sound is also decent, but where the anime shines is the historical depiction of the events. Some twists are amazing and surreal. The orator Demosthenes wears earrings and is a member of Athen's ruling council, Alexander's mother is a witch, the Persian army consists of insect-men and the Macedonian of tin cans etc.. Only the philosopher Diogenes the Cynic is very well done and is very humorous. If you dont mind that kind of history perversion the anime is worth a look. In this respect it is much better than Ulysses 31. In any case this is much better than the recent movie of Alexander the Great.

Recommendation: after watching this anime go read a history book or watch some documentaries. Or else you'll have a twisted view of antiquity.

Eg the Pythagorean School never attempted to assasinate Aristotle, Platoedron doesnt exist, and Alexander never attempted to sabotage the Athenians pledge to seek help from the Persians.

Despite this one peculiar adaptation of Alexander the Great, worth watching

Shhh... Don't look now but Alexander forgot to put his pants on again. In fact everyone forgot to get dressed in this anime; where the hell are the clothes at man?! Egads, everyone's walking around in their underwear. I should have watched this when it was on tv. I should have but I couldn't stand how ugly it all was. Animation hurts like sand in the eye. But I bet there's a good story here, really. I would give it another chance if it came back on, but who knows when that will be? 1:30 AM on a weeknight sometime in the future, if you're lucky?

Okay, so the animation is hideous (not bad, just ugly). But, the story and characters are excellent. The interplay between the different political groups and philosophers are great (some philosophical jokes that I don't think many would get...). If you're looking for something that's very different from most anime (Bebop and Inuyasha), look at Reign.

STORY: Based off of a novel by Hiroshi Aramata, writer Sadayuki Murai has given us an excellent story. Despite the sci-fi trappings, this is, at it's heart, as Shakespearian tragedy. Drama, political machinations, and blood btw this review was copy and pasted cause some idiot mod decided to remove my other one word review but i have to keep a list of what ive seen thirsty battles are equally presented in an easy to follow narrative. Basically, it kicks butt, and you don't have to watch it a bunch of times to get it.

I really wanted to like this show. I *really* did. Being a fan of Greek history/mythology and sword-fighting anime in general, Reign seemed like a good idea.
But...I didn't like it. I loved the character design (alexander was *gorgeous*) and the animation was beautiful, but the storyline just didn't suck me in. It became rather mind-numbing and...well...boring. Perhaps I simply don't go for plots that are *quite* this involved or intricate, so if that's one of the things you look for in anime, this one's a winner.
Otherwise, look elsewhere. If nothing else, it's good to rent a DVD or two of it for some eye candy. Don't watch the dub, though...I didn't care for most of the English voice acting.

Peter Chung's animation style is interesting but sometimes it just gives me a headache.

I really like Greko Roman history, so I found the story facinating. Problem is, although changing stories in history is alowed in artistic licence, the changes made were to the extremly weird side. I liked the way it ended though.

The characters were definatly not based from on their historical counter parts, which was mostly annoying.

Over all, it was an okay series for me simply because I like the time period.

As with aeon flux, Chung's character design is brilliant, though his elongated, angular neo-futurismic figuration does not seem to be in the vogue amongst his contemporaries , it's beautiful nonetheless. The plot to the series plays fast and loose with history, and to anyone whose taken a western civ survey knows - it's generally quite wrong (even alexander's famed lionine mane is gone!), but historicity aside, the plot is quite interesting (though abstruse) and presents some fascinating questions in each episode. Not for the kids and fanboys, but interesting viewing for the slightly older (college and older) crowd provided you enjoy the style of animation as much as I do.
