| Matantei Loki Ragnarok (MLR) is a very well balanced anime that contains good points and bad points that kind of contradict one another. One one hand, the anime seems to be very humorous and on the other hand, it goes into deep emotional family ties later on.
MLR felt like a parody of the Norse gods. A lot of the characters were modeled after the gods but placed in a humorous light, especially Thor, Freyr and Gullinbursti (sp?). Character design (big eyes and silly expressions) helped to bring forth their lighthearted characteristics (even though everyone had their serious sides).
I thought character relationships was something complex and well done in MLR. It was one of the better aspects of the anime because family ties actually made the anime have a STORY and there was character development.
The animation, I found, was not an important part of MLR and does not reflect whether this anime was good or not. What was more important was the humor amalgamated with the seriousness, which I found was quite well done.
The OP theme was better than the ED theme, and the bgm throughout the anime was used effectively. Sometimes the music created a mood of foolishness, and other times the music was dramatic (like during battle scenes). Oh yes, I just think they shouldn't have shown Loki's summoning of his wand so many times (and how is it that Mayura never notices him doing that until later on, even though she's at the scene a lot of the time?)
I thought that the ending for MLR was quite weak and it did not really feel like an ending, just a stub. I hope I didn't skip an episode, but everything seems to have concluded very suddenly. I also thought this 'ending' seemed quite farfetch'd and predictable.
Overall, though MLR was quite lacking in the story department, it was a very funny anime that you can watch without putting any personal thought into it. Just absorb the humor.

| Ragnarok was a pretty good series. The animation and voice acting are both very well done. The music isn't very memorable thoug, but I did like the Opening. The story is pretty good, but it is kind of a bad guy of the week thing, although it doesn't seem that repetetive. The characters are mostly developed well although some are annoying at times. Ragnarok is alot of different things at once. There's action, mystery, comedy; it's not a mystery series like Case Closed like it seems it makes out to be. Although that's not really a bad thing but that's what I came into it thinking it was. Overall Ragnarok is a great series with some flaws, the biggest being the rushed ending. Even with those flaws I still enjoyed it a lot.

| Matantei Loki Ragnarok manages to be overwhelmingly good at just one thing: balancing itself on the fringe between an awesome series and a piece of toilet paper. You see, what MLR tries to do is combine different elements of success in order to achieve a series with a gothic feel to it whilst the characters and storyline are based on the Norse Mythology. At some points it succeeds in doing so but at others it just manages to be a total disaster. I have little knowledge of the Norse Mythology so I won't go into the details of how well those legends are adapted but rather express my ideas on the anime at hand and its strengths and weaknesses.
Still with me? Ok...read on!

| This is one of my favorite animes. It surely has few disadvantages, but the huge amount of humor, warmth and cuteness works well to cover them.
First of all, characters are constructed very well, along with their weaknesses and strong points. Each person is original, interesting and has a pretty design, which by the way
is really cute and sweet. Of course this chara design will not fit everyone’s tastes, but most of people seem to like it. Besides, Loki is just so handsome! I'm being a helpless fangirl when it come sto him = =''
And his character is so interesting. We can never be sure what is hidden behind his smirk or collected and calm face. But he begins to change a little during the show….
Mayura with her pink hair and squealing, high-pitched voice should've annoyed unnerved me to no end, but strangely, I really like her. She just has this “something”.
Animation is wonderful, which isn’t stunning considering the year of production. Anyway, the good animation is always good ^__^
Music… I didn’t pay much attention to the BGMs but it doesn’t mean they were bad. In my opinion they are just not incredible or very standing out. But there were few melodies that I actually liked. The other case is ending and opening song. I love them! They are just cool!
The melody, the lyrics, the vocal… Sugoi, sugoi.
The plot is great, though not very discovering and extremely original. Small detective, imprisoned in the body of a child... But nevertheless, the idea of making the plot so strongly embedded in the Nordic mythology, is amusing. That opens the door to lots of new ideas, resolutions and many things we have never seen before. Well, at least I've never seen that.
Overall, this series is really amusing ^^

| Animation: Very well! They used toward a more dark animation in order to express the mysteriousness feeling to the viewers.
Sound: Good! Especially the OP and ED! They also successfully used the background music to emphasize the feeling of each character's situation. However, I found that Mayu's repeating words of "mystery" quite annoying. I think it would be nice to reduce it a bit.
Story: Like it in the beginning especially for the detective and mystery kind of story. However, does not seem to have a good plot. More characters were introduced as the story progressed which was pointed to the direction in answering Loki's question regarding WHY he sent to human's world in his current form. However instead of answering the questions, they give the viewers more questions as to what sins that Loki's committed? and who is Odin-sama, what is her/his goal? is it truly ragnarok? if yes, then what is ragnarok that is predicted?? At the end, all those questions that were exposed to the viewers are not answered ... and more over, Loki's question to why he is in human's world in his current form also not answered. The story have a lot potential to be developed even more ... but it just ended like that. Enough said, I am dissappointed with the ending.
Character: referring back to the sound and animation, they are both expressed very well. However, there should be a lot of room for character's development for Mayu... but she remains clueless as ever. Loki at the other hand was maturing as to be more loving towards his children. Yamano-san was developing into a more protective children toward his parent and gratefull for Loki.
Value: I wont watch it again in the future. So I would recommend to rent if it is possible rather than owning it.
Enjoyment: You can enjoy it if you like detective & mystery kind of story and like old norse religion. But dont expect to dig deeper than that as I tried to do which ends up in dissappointment.

| This anime is, overall, awesome! I see some ppl with websites kinda trashing it. But I love it! Ppl hating on Mayura.... I don't understand this, because I LOVE Mayura... she's cute-n-funny and I love how she says "Mystery". I even recorded her saying it. Plus, how can U hate a mystery otaku if your an anime otaku? I would've given this anime all 10s, but the idea isn't necessarily original. However, it is a great twist on Nordic Mythology and a good idea for an anime, seeing as how I haven't seen to many like this. If anything, it should be used as a learning tool. I've only seen 10 eps as I'm writing this, so, I might write another review @ the end. Also, I finally got the answer to my question... What is Yamino Ryusuke's purpose????!!!??? Well, they show it in eps 9. But the whole time before that, I was like... "Why is this older guy always around Loki and where did he come from?!?". Gr8 anime. Watch it

| If you just want to have fun on a rainy day. Watch this anime. It's funny, specially the Cooking and the 7 colored detective.
If you like cute boys with the mind of a thousand year old god of mischief, watch this.
If you like a weird family, the father being a child, the eldest son, a dog, the other son a snake and the youngest known as the goddess of the underwold, this anime is also for you.
But if you are looking for deep and meaningful stories and plots, this is not for you.
For me? This is fun, like eating ice cream on a hot day.

| If there's one thing Ragnarok succeeds in doing, it's being neither good nor bad; it’s exceedingly average. Yet it had all the elements-Norse mythology, mystery, and fantasy-to make one hell of an anime. However, not only is the series average, but most of it was almost tedious to watch. Granted, the mildly creepy first episode, though not helping my fear of dolls, was an interesting start. Sadly though, the rest of the series doesn’t live up to that. Most of it is borderline stupidity; the humor was lame, and it just grated on my nerves. There were even times when the series attempted to be almost gothic, but with the silliness, that’s just not going to work.
Furthermore, unfortunately, a repetitive “mystery/monster of the week takes up much of the series, but at episode nineteen, things perk up, and for the first time, I’m actually interested in what’s happening. At this point, all the com…stupidity is shed away, and the anime starts to take itself seriously. Though my interest was finally piqued, I can’t say the series completely redeems itself. It’s too little, too late, and I certainly didn’t forget the stupidity of the former episodes. And I sure as hell didn’t forget the cooking contest two episodes before when certain characters were shouting things like, “Awkward Warm Potato Slash! “ But hey, at least I was finally interested. It took me a while, and I can’t say the characters make up for this.
Surprisingly, Loki is the best character in the series. I say surprisingly because my initial impression was that the characters were bland (and most of them are) and that Loki had no personality. But he does. Cool-headed, mischievous, and impishly seductive, I imagine he’s what a “trickster god is supposed to be like. The rest of the cast, however, are just as annoying and uninteresting as I initially thought. Mayura is every bit as annoying as other reviewers have said she is. Her voice is obviously meant to be cute, but it only comes off as being irritating and obnoxious, especially when she says the word “mystery. I found the goddess, Freya, to be almost as annoying as Mayura. Every time she appeared, I gritted my teeth, knowing something brainless was going to happen. Fortunately, she doesn’t have much screen time. When Freyr first appears, I thought he would be the most colorful character, but his behavior gets old…fast.
The others have one thing to define their characters which is used for comedic purposes. For example, Yamino cooks well and is always talking about buying items by mail order. Thor is always looking for a job, usually ones involving food. Fenrir is always hungry (Hmm…there must be some connection with food here…) and is always, “Daddy this…and Daddy that… All these things are the most interesting things about these characters, and they are used to make you laugh. They don’t. It’s get tiresome after a while. Basically, the only characters that aren’t annoying are Loki, Heimdall, and the Norns (particularly Skuld).
Episodes nineteen through twenty-two are the best parts of the series. I felt as if a story was finally emerging. However, the last three episodes (24-26) pissed me off to no end. At this point, I finally admitted that there is absolutely no story or point to this anime. When the first eighteen episodes were cheesy humor, the last three were….gee…what shall I call it? I’ll just be blunt, and call it bullshit. The only thing these last episodes have served to do (besides piss me the hell off), was leave more questions unanswered and render the previous episodes even more pointless than they already were. And don’t get me started on the hilariously bad ending.
Despite its utter pointlessness, annoying characters, and terrible ending, I didn’t dislike the series as much as I should. Oh, don’t get me wrong. I sure as hell didn’t like it much either. I’ve seen much, much worse than this.
….But I’ve also seen much, much better.

| The first 24 episodes are pretty good. The animation and direction are good and ths sound is good. The story seems very promising, and each episode is pleasantly funny. Then I don't really understand the 25th episode-- it gets all artsy and I don't really understand what's going on or why (it seemed to want to remind me of Eva...). The characters for the gods are all very interesting, although I think Heimdall could have been more developed. However, I think the anime would have benefitted greatly from losing the ditzy Japanese schoolgirl chick. She's forced into the plot in the last couple episodes, kidnapped princess style but really doesn't seem to have much of a point other than comedic value otherwise. She's not even likeable. All the other characters are so interesting, that I'm sure a better plot could have been formed around them without her, and maybe the ending wouldn't have seemed so rushed. A less two-dimensional human of interest might have worked in her place as well-- at least it would be more understanable why the other characters thought she was so important.

| The mythology in the story is kind of off (according to my friend who is obsessed with Norse Myth ^-^) but I still love it. The characters are great and it leaves you hoping for a second season (or that could just be me^-^).

| Very interesting series that actually uses lots of the myths it's based off of in the storyline -- albeit manipulated to suit the story's purposes. The animation itself isn't that phenomenal, but the chara designs are very imaginative and the story carries the plot along very fast. Big doses of humor punctuated by seriousness mean that you can get a lot out of the series.
A must-see for fans of Norse mythology!

| its the best "kiddy-anime" iv seen so far. once you know its for younger audiances and except that fact this anime turnes into a rare gem. i love the characters, i think loki is a great hero, though abit too complex for a show for younger kids. the flying pig and freyer are the ultimet comic relife and mayura supplies alot of the humure too. all in all other then the annoying "loki-draws-his-stave" scene this is a great anime thats a must for all the ppl who can enjoy it as kids

| first of all the setting is out of place, norse gods in Japan? if they kept the setting in northern europe where the norse use to live would of been better.
Second the character are biased, they all look like kids and goes to high school etc. It should of been shorter since nothing happen in the middle; the only thing that kept me watching was the comedy in this.
The story about norse god is a good concept but could of been more well thought out and by that it would have a more solid and interesting storyline, a better setting would help too.
overall not too bad, too much useless episodes though. A movie or ova would be a good idea to fill in the plot holes.

| I read a lot of Norse mythology when I was young and in my teens, so I was familiar with Loki's role in the true Ragnarok. I always thought of him a s a sneak, a liar, and a man who looked good on the outside but the complete opposite on the inside.
The last thing I expected was a Japanese animation on Norse mythology! After reading about this anime in magainzes I immediately wondered "If they're going to completely reverse Loki's character, personality and so forth, is this going to work?! Can they still hold true to Norse mythology even with such a major change?" Amazingly, yes.
First episode I watched, I was intrigued. The theme music is deliciously poised halway between the light and the darkness, reflecting Loki's conflicts and turmoils in his personal quest to regain the power he lost after Odin kicked him out of heaven. Only problem is, he wasn't the only one! Thor, Heimdall, Freya, Freyr, the Three Norns! What on Earth is going up there?!
Loki goes through the days by running a detective agency that investigates the paranormal. One day, he is approached by Mayura, a lively and vivacious yet somewhat disillusioned teen girl. After that, even though Mayura follows him like crazy, ever desperate to whet her appetite for "Mysterious mystery!", Loki manages to keep his true identity hidden. Because it's not everyday an 8 year old boy has the power of a God, even if somewhat suppressed to start with.
Basically, Loki's quest then becomes to figure out what the hell is going on to get all his fellow gods and goddesses kicked out of heaven. Odin thought by kickig these guys out of Heaven, they'd kill Loki in order to get back to Heaven. Well, it didn't work. Thor's more interested in food (no surprise!) and being able to afford all that food, Freya's still in love with Loki and is desperate as to be with him, and Freyr and Gullinbrusti make one of the most hilarious duo of dunderheads ever! And who said pigs couldn't fly?! Only Hemidall carries any desire to take Loki out but even he loses his nerve.
And of course there's Mayura, the mystery girl who secretly likes Loki-kun and can't get enough of mysteries, but seems to be disconnected from nearly everything else in life. It's a weird combo of characters, but it works. From club sagas to hauntings to Virtual World messups to confrontations with fellow gods/goddesses, it never gets dull.
It's incredibly well drawn, I must say that. To be able to flow from light to darkness in a whim, to shroud Loki and all of his crew in mystery and secrets, and yet conjure up something as cute as Ecchan. Now that ain't bad at all!
It's the storyline that lets the anime down a bit. For the first five episodes, you're intrigued by all the weird events, people rocking up and even cosplay, but you just wonder "Okay, what is the point of this series?!" Once Freya rocks up in Episode 6 and Freyr in Episode 8, things begin to fall into place properly, and it's from one mysterious mystery to another, before the ultimate plot is revealed. Loki really does want to be adult again and reclaim Heaven as his own now, and he just might do anything to get it back, even if he is a cute 8 year old now. And then we have the tragedy of Episode 25. The solemn confrontation between Loki and Hel is a defining moment in the series and adds an amzing sense of tragedy to something that might have been in danger of being taken too lightly.
Admittedly, I though something big was going to happen in the last episode. Don't hold your breath, the surprises all came in Episode 25. 26 simply does one thing - Keep everyone together. It was a bit of a letdown, but in the end, it reminds you what Demon Detective Loki Ragnarok is really all about. It's not about hate or war or anything like that. It's about believing in one-self, in the people around you and that there is good in the world, that there is some force that resolves everything in the end and loves you, that Heaven does exist and that anyone can get there. That ends up being the moral of the story, even if it gets confused along the way and some people will obviously never spot it. And why Odin booted everyone out of Heaven was never truly explained, which was a bit annoying. A nothing ending and plot holes do detract from overall enjoyment.
This won't be the next big thing, but it should turn a lot of heads nevertheless. It's daringly original and a much-needed refresher amongst the sudden recyling of old series and increased fanservice that seems to be the fad in 2004. Demon Detective Loki Ragnarok was one of the better animes of 2003. So if you do try it, do think it's just about Mayura and 'mysterious mysteries'. It's about something more important. Keep that in mind, and once you get to Episode 6 and beyond, the true meaning of this series will slowly come to you.

| I only watched this anime out of curiousity. Its pretty good eventhough it didnt turn out the way I expected it to be.. This anime could have been more if it they could have had some more twists into it, and developed the story into more thrilling manner where our heroin may found out or not he's true form and etc, etc, etc... I want to be kept by the edge of my sit, plus they didnt give enough explanation why was this goddess or god wants him dead. It could have had so much potential to be a lot more anime... but like i said it didnt turn out the way i wanted it to be plus left me with unanswered questions.. but nonetheless i enjoyed it specially the guy with pig I like him sooo much.. LOL

| God, everytime I hear mystery now I want to punch myself in the head and hope I see blood on my knuckles. The heroine is ANNOYING! Everything to her is a mystery. If someone took a crap and the turd was brown, she'd probably say "MYSTERY! Brown Poop from a brown guy! That's pretty suspicious!" She is seemingly useless. You could take her completely out of the picture and everything would be pretty much the same. Only thing she added was a decision for loki at the end.
The animation and character designs are exceptional. Wasting animation on this is terrible. It's almost like wasting perfectly good food like grain, meat and milk. Sound has a nice use of instruments and I do commend the efforts to have voices that fit more or less than excellent.
Watching this was painful. The story didn't go anywhere and had plenty of side stories and useless filler eps. It moved painfully slow and had repetitive action where loki sommons his stuff. This anime is probably a cool version of SailorMoon but that's about it.
I really didn't like the whole Norse Mythology stuff. I didn't even like Marvel's Thor. Isn't Loki supposed to be a bad guy afterall? This anime was just plain boring to me. The animation and sound was nice though but that's about all I can say that was good.

| I was hooked right off the back because of the animation, that I got to admit, but then as I got to the end, I started to like it more and more. It didn't turn out the way I thought it would. I hope I am not giving out any spoilers, but I just wanted a differ view on things.
This anime actaully reminds me of a sailor moon thing going on. I got tired of them repeating some parts. but other then that it was not that bad.

| In a way, Matantei Loki Ragnarok (henceforth referred to by me as "MaLoki" to save time) is a conflicting sort of anime. On the one hand, you have some of the most vivid and entertaining characters of 2003 anime. On the other hand, you have a story that, while promising, doesn't deliver at the end. (The not-so-great ending really does just scream "Sequel! Sequel!")
Most of the animation, especially the opening sequence, is quite gorgeous, avoiding the over-CGed graphics seen in most recent anime, especially fantasy anime. The only overboard thing on the animation is the Glowing Red Eyes that almost everything seems to posess. Also on the animation side is the costume design. They did a relatively excellent job of transferring the original manga look to animation. The costumes of the characters, while simple, are all unique, not just within the show but within anime in general. (I predict that there'll end up being a lot of MaLoki cosplayers in the future; I'm already one of them.)
The sound is neither spectacular nor disappointing. The sound effects are quite well-done and believable. The background music, though, isn't as great as it could be. While it's nice, unobtrusive, and enjoyable in the context of the anime itself, when removed from the animation and listened to as stand-alone music it quickly falls into the realm of the mediocre. The one truly great background music piece, a jazz piano type song that plays when Freyr and Freya argue, is one of the few main background music pieces that didn't get on the OST. Quite a pity, that.
The story is something best left to the individual person to decide about, since while it's relatively weak and unexplored and sometimes meanders into the realm of the unlikely and not-so-fun (particularly in this one series of episodes near the end focusing on Loki and Skuld), the other attributes of the show may, for you, more than make up for the story.
It's the characters that really make MaLoki shine. Freyr is my second-favorite anime personality of all time, and is (in my opinion) the strongest character, but each character, even the minor ones, has their distinctive traits and is, if not well-developed, completely unique. The episode where Loki picks up people's personalities really works just because each of the characters is different enough that it's quite clear who he's acting like.
MaLoki is one of my very favorite shows. While it definitely has its ups and its downs, I personally adore the entire thing. I would like to see a sequel, especially with such an open ending to (what I hope is) the first season. You may end up not liking it, but you might end up loving it.
A final note: Watch for the Ringu parody in Episode 11!
