| A fairly terrible anime. Even though you want to like the characters, the terrible animation, poor story and even the characters themselves tend to get in the way. There are many other better sports anime's out there. If you want basketball, go slam dunk. If you want baseball, lots of choices for you. Tennis? I guess Prince of tennis. But do yourself a favor and don't worry about this one.

| I have a competetive spirit, so usually I do like sport animes very much, people who are the best at something they do are always adorable. Yet, this anime's main weakness was definitely because it was about sport.
They managed to pull off a bunch of likeable characters and an interesting school-romance story, yet they failed miserably when trying to make basketball matches to suit plot well. Actually, I, myself, was more interested in the love affairs between Aikawa and Pony-chan rather than those boring basketball matches. Furthermore, the matches of the show were made somekind of unrealistic, as I couldn't feel them very well, because from time to time they would just skip a bunch of time - "and there half of the game passes, and the gap is still the same as it was". What made me care even less about the games, was the animation. Suddenly when the match would start it would become clearly worse, its almost like the animators didn't care a thing about matches. Somewhere in episodes 18 or 19, the animation became so horrible that I barely managed to finish watching them. Though later, after the matches it became normal again.
Well, I don't know whom should I recommend this, it's neither very good at characters neither at its matches. So, if you don't have anything to watch right now, and want to relax with something sportish and not totally pathetic, then watch this.

| A basketball anime about a previously disfunctional male team. After a new student Aikawa joins the team, Mizuho's basketball program gets some life kicked into it.
Pretty straight forward storyline about how a team wants to make the national tournament. However, I think the anime could have delved deeper in both story and character development.
I would catergorize this as a sports shounen anime with bits of drama and romance.

| Simple one track basketball story.
Dear Boys is all about tactics on basketball and focus on every team member. The basketball scenes kinda cheap consider they done well in the first ep.(first ep. pwnt) but later on you'll see they got lazy and sometime the art gone down the drain. The sound help a little bit but sometime it can be too overwhelming and bored the viewer. I for once doze off of the subtitles becuase it wasn't all interesting and all they talk about is touching cheesy stuff about teamwork and stuff. They build up so many possible interesting stories around the main team but they never develop or let's us in the detail. I was looking forward to see the background, the parents, and the girls(romance) but we never see any of it develop or rather they trying to keep it slowest as possible. I don't know how far has manga goes... or maybe they just waiting to do a superior 2nd season.
Nonetherless. Watching this pwntage basketball never bore me. The main guy always unbelievely win out all the guy and everyone around him level up. Players conflict come and goes.. but not really a serious matter(althou i was looking forward to it) to it. They also show us atlest some of the game play, but 2 or 3 good play is all they can come up with.. at the final thou; author show us that they still got game right. hehe. Wrap thing up with hope of 2nd season isn't bad but really... what if there's no 2nd l0l
Anyway, watch this if you love basketball since there's nothing to watch for other reason. ROMANCE, INTERESTING IDEAS, PARENT CONFLICT are all still underdevelopment.

| This is debateable in terms of enjoyment. I like basketball anime, and this one is made so that it is quite enjoyable. However, if you are critical of this anime like all other animes, then this isn't that great because its overall composition is kind of unimpressive.
This anime's biggest flaw is that it really isn't that deep. Sports animes like Hajime no Ippo, and Slam Dunk focus a lot on character development as well and make what they do more memorable. This one is more of just a showy, mainstream (with its use of music) basketball anime. Nothing really deep, therefore it really has a low rewatch value.
From the start, the characters start out really impressive in their skills and moves. This isn't like Sakuragi where he has to learn all the basis despite the fact that he is a street brawler. Their main enemies are ... well each other I guess, they have to overcome their past, and learn to work with each other, etc.
I have no big complaints about the animation style, the CG used, and the music. It isn't that detrimental to the overall atmosphere. Although, I think they overuse their music...
Overall, this isn't that bad. Although it does kind of deteriorate after a bit. A lot of it is really unrealistic, relying on a team of 5, etc etc. Furthermore, you really don't get close to the characters as they struggle to be the best. At most, this anime is just something for a quick entertainment. It seems like it aims to be a pop-culture type anime with its infusion of trance, hip-hop, nice looking hairstyle, and basketball.
I wouldn't recommend watching this anime... though. There are a lot of excessive boring parts. I think it tires too hard to be similar to popular culture. They also talk so much but I still don't feel closer at all.

| The story is a catchy one. The characters are drawn well and portrayed very nicely. The music was really annoying to me. I don't think Japanese people should rap hip hop. Its just not a good combination. The animation was seriously bad towards the end of the story. Some of the characters ended up being the same height, even though there is a considerable height difference between those characters. The movement and small gestures of the characters was really awkward and yeah..animation sucked. Other than that, I really enjoyed the series. The story ended abruptly and I wish the series was a bit longer.

| at the beginning I thought the animation was great. the story was interesting. everything expected out of a sports anime. but towards episode 20 and beyond, the animation really really sucked. there were a couple of episodes were there's literally no movement, just screenshots and the characters were horribly drawn like 5 minute drawings to meet deadline. the faces were unrecognizable and with the quality of a kid's. the only redeeming factor was that the last two episodes went back to its former quality. slacking on animation was the only drawback for this series.

| I enjoyed this anime. The animation was a bit lacking. There was overuse of stills and their seemed to be a low frame rate in a lot of scenes. The music in the anime goes well with the basketball game sequences and really gets you into the game. The characters are cool and interesting. The story is your typical sports anime story. I liked all the characters and I still got into the games, even though there was an overuse of stills. The ending is a bit incomplete. I thought they would expand more on Aikawa's relationship with his father and his reasons for leaving Tendouji. I thought they would play Tendouji in a game, but they never did. Aikawa's relationship with his father, and his possible reasons for leaving Tendouji were mentioned in the beginning but then never expanded upon. I guess you have to read the Manga to get the ending for that. Overall though, it was an enjoyable anime.

| I love this anime! Especially the brief interaction between the team's repressed, serious manager (?) with one of the players from the opposing basketball team. The guys looked so cool, especially everyone but the main hero (Aikawa), and I liked the sweet girls. The sound is loud and fun, what do you expect from a high school basketball movie? Fun fun.

| Dear Boys is definitely one of my favourite series. It has some very typical elements for sports animes, but so what? Lack of quality in animation at the end didn't bother me so much. Bgm musics fit the game perfectly, I also liked the romance between Aikawa and Pony-chan. It ends kind abruptly, but I've heard rumors they would make second season. Hope they will.

| The show was more impressive in the earlier eps, but about half way though, the show started to taper off... The plot was getting streached and started to wander away from what it was originally about... I still haven't figured out why the seniors weren't able to play along with the team... It was confusing... And why the captin (taku) didn't want a sixth player on the team incase someone fouled out of the game (~~ironicly enough~~).
All in all, it's a decent anime, but I wouldn't exactly recomend it... Perhaps if you're really really into basketball, and don't care about the quality of the anime all that much....

| Not the best animation...
but the sound was Superb! Trance songs of forgotten times! And some of them I even know. On top of that some of them are made by producers of my country ^^ So nice to see stuff does get in Japan.
Story was...very sportsy, but nice ending though which didn't make it too sportsy.
Characters are overall not that interesting, they focus mainly on the physical condition and after that comes the relation between the characters...Should have been the other way around, if they wanted more depth in the story.
If you want to heear some Trance songs of a couple of years ago, this one is recommended.

| I was really looking forward to checking out Dear Boys since there haven't really been any basketball anime since Slam Dunk. Unfortunately, I was let down big time.
For a far superior basketball anime, watch Slam Dunk. Better yet, read the Slam Dunk manga.

| I love basket ball. I like playing it a lot and sometimes enjoy the odd viewing of the Grizzlies (useless when they were still in vancouver but at least now they're getting better at memphis...). What a turn this anime took. People were doing the impossible like some short little dude goes by 5 girls driving to the net? I mean, none of the girls even touched him. Dunking when he's a little more than half the height of the basket? C'mon... I'm 5'11" and I can barely grab the 10' net with two hands.... I really didn't enjoy the initial-d-esque music that they put into this anime. there's just not enough excitement for fast paced music... what's up with that brown curly hair guy? he just stands around and he's already sweating... Sports anime doesn't do it for me. I love playing sports but watching sports is just to boring for me. Unfortunately, Dear Boys is not only a sports anime, it's a very unrealistic boring slam dunk clone.

| The story is almost directly from the manga, it is enjoyable but very standard. However I have to agree that the artwork gets worse and worse towards the end. It is almost unbearable to watch the artwork, I just watched it for the sake of the story. The Music is good though, some Eurobeat very similar to initial D.

| Man! This is the worst thing I've seen since Hamtaro. Okay, admittingly, I actually, kind of liked Hamtaro... That's besides the point. THIS was aweful. If I could give Value and Enjoyment a zero, I would!
The characters are aweful. Not only are they trite and boring, but they're not believable at all!
The plot was boring. More interesting is The WB's One Tree Hill. Okay, honestly, about the plot, I really can't go too much into it. Why? I stopped watching after about fifteen minutes of this. I really couldn't stand it much. A bunch of pretty boy (Bishonens) playing basketball... boring. The fact that it's basketball is not the problem, just the story itself, with it's fake characters and the hackneyed plot, not to mention the horrible theme songs just made me give up on it before it really got started. I normally give things more of a chance, but I just couldn't for this one. Sorry to anyone who really enjoys this one, but I can't. I couldn't stand watching fifteen more minutes of it.
Maybe if the animation was better, I would have finished the episode. The animation was just... average.
I do tend to give things second chance so I might review this one again.

| Dear Boys is a pretty average quality sports anime but still has something that can make you enjoy it episode after episode.
The story is standard stuff. A new guy joins a troubled team and leads them to new glory.
I think the only thing that stands out to some extent is the characters. The anime is pretty successful in making you care for them. There are some nice girls (though I did't like how everying with them started dragging after a while).
The animation is ok, sometimes good, sometimes bad. The music is very nice upbeat techno (often reminiscent of Initial D). Well, except for the rap ending which can bring you nighmares :)
The way Dear Boys ended (it was quite an interesting develpment actually) suggests that another season may follow. It will be fun to see more.

| I can't say that I ever cared for basketball. But by some incredible coincidence I started to watch this series (mainly because I had no idea what the series was about when I downloaded it).
Somehow I got hooked and watched all the episodes. Now I'm actually condidering watching basketball from TV. So Dear Boys really had an impact for me.
The series isn't too realistic, but it doesn't matter too much. To important thing is to have exciting matches. Characters or their relationships don't evolve during the series and the whole thing just ends when it should begin. I want more! Damn it!
Animation is good at times and bad at times. It seems to devolve during the series. Sounds aren't that bad during the show, but the ending brings tears of pain in to my eyes.
So in the end, we have a pretty weak sport anime, that does what it is supposed to do.

| Before going any further, this review stops at episode 6 because of the events in the practice game.
The animation is nowhere near any sort of decent quality, but that doesn't really detract from a show (Slam Dunk wasn't exactly an animation masterpiece either). What really got me to dislike this show was its characters, and the way the game of basketball is portrayed. There are some decent handles displayed in the credits, but the in-show animation is... well... indescribable. Then comes the "break down #4" sequence, which was as realistic as an episode of the Carebears, and I couldn't bare to watch this show any longer.
Given Fuji-chan's "personality", the fact that he didn't get "out of the game" and decide to kill one of the opposing players (which in his situation, I might've done) is a disgrace to fictional characters worldwide.
He is portrayed as a violent guy. People can't just change themsleves in between episodes.
[Edit] Warning: Spoiler
By the way, there is something every avid NBA fan knows: when your team is up 3, on the game's last possession, and on defense, guard the three point line with your life and give up the free dunk if need be... It's just something that even more reflects the lack of basketball IQ pronounced time and time again by these shows. At least Sakuragi messed up because he was new and being an idiot was part of his awesome character ^_^.

| they didnt blend cg very well in this anime. animation was barely decent in the begining but terrible in the last third of the series. even worse, it wasnt fluent at all. character movements were too stalled during b-ball matches. it was like putting several snapshots together which was bad and slow. even though slam dunk has older animation, at least it flows well enuff.
overall, an anime not worth watching. slam dunk is much better than this.
