| This was one of my first introductions to the fighting show genre. Sadly, the US DVD release was absolutely screwed up (even the Taiwan bootleg was better!) and finally discontinued. If they do a reissue, I'll add it to my collection.
First, this is a fighting show, so it's about fighting, with the usual "want to be the best" plot plus family revelations. As a twist, the lead is a schoolgirl, but this show isn't exactly kawaii: Apart from ugly art typical for a fighting show, Maki is pretty much a doofus, her friend Mina has ridiculously large breasts and is in love with her, and Renge, who in a "normal" anime would be the childlike ultra-cute one, is a parody character so ugly and obnoxious you'd happily hit her with a shovel. Later we meet Kaori Sakiyama, who is obsessed with beating Maki, and is definitely the best character in the show, being fanatical, violent, noble and pathetic all at the same time.
Later in the show, some fights go on a bit long (I think 3 episodes should be the legal limit!). The series ending resolves the arc, but you're lefting wanting to know what happens to the characters (sadly, I don't think they'll continue the show). And eventually you notice the characters aren't actually evolving at all, but the show is entertaining enough that you'll forgive it.

| A fine example of a mediocre series. The whole thing i spretty meaningless, and if you desire definite meaning to a series, just skip the series. It's about fighting, simple as that. People that for different reasons choose to fight (street fight). There is also a league for strong street fighters to participate in. The fights are not bad, nor are the characters really, but since there is very little story behind it all, the whole thing is for watching with the absence of thoughts. That's ok, but hardly great. If you however feel like watching something just for fun, this series is an option, there are no great flaws, when first you accept the kind of series it is, but I would hardly pay much for it.

| This anime lacks absolutely any and all character chemistry, which leads to an absolutely boring progression for any part of this anime that does not involve fighting. Not only is Maki's (the main character) reason for fighting really not believeable, there are just a whole bunch of annoying characters - for instance, all of Maki's friends are quite pointless as they only serve to show that Maki is actually pretty sweet at times. Furthermore, all the things that occur with Mina is so annoying! From the lesbian confessions, to kidnappings, to model shoots, to beach queens... all the progression in the beginning 12 episodes rely heavily on Mina's stupidity and big breasts and that is why it sucks. Only in the latter half of the series does everyone else take a backseat role and Maki start to kick some ass, but for some odd reason, these annoying pointless filler characters just keep coming back to do nothing!!!! UGH
While the fighting scenes were and choreography quite originally and I've not seen anything like what is shown in here, if only the animation style was a little more appealing to the eye I could have enjoyed this a lot more. (I guess I somewhat got used to Maki's look, but there's no doubt it looks better later on). Furthermore, there are a lot of pointless fights in the beginning that could have been left out. Air Master's atmosphere is definitely one of the most tedious and cumbersome I've encountered - in other words, other than fighting, this anime has no merit. Just skip through to the cool aerial tricks and you'll have pulled out the essentials of this anime. Also, if you even want to begin watching this mediocre fighting anime, definitely take a look from 13 on. You dont have to watch the first 12 episodes at all. (Some guy metioned it's good for background information, but I can tell you now, it is not important since the ending is so damn rushed anyway).
As a quick guide: episodes 1-12 are the random street fights that kind of introduce all the "good" fighting characters, along side with various stupid humor stuff, episodes 13-15 are the pro-wrestling shorts that introduces another character, 16 is the who ranking Fukamichi thing which is pretty awesome as a whole bunch of stronger people come in and fight all the characters that we've gotten to know. I only wonder why most of these people haven't gotten concussions and died yet.

| Normally I do not review anything unless if I watched either a good amount of it or completed the entire series.
However, I will put that aside and say this. If you are looking for anything serious and meaningful this is not the anime you want. You can tell this just by the first episode. It can not get anymore cliche than this, typical school girls getting hit on by perverts and they break out some crazy fighting moves as if it your typical thing to do in Tokyo.
Its funny for people who like things that make absolutely no sense in real life. However, it did not fit into my caterogy of good action anime.

| The animation on itself was of good caliber together with the sound prefixes, but the story....I would say i was really bored when i was watching this anime. Nobody seemed to be close to being a match for 'airmaster' and then finally getting close to a clue, julliette, it takes an unbelievably stupid turn of events. I would grade the story on overal badly, eventhough being a good anime. But what is a good anime with a good story + characters, the characters were also constructed of a bad mixture of character types. Overal negative review.

| A all around decent anime, with some minor plot twists and enough of what any good anime fan wants to keep them interested...Blood, bouncing boobs, brawling, school-girls, love, same-gender love (both), plot and even a ninja. Now how does that not sound at least interesting?

| I didn't know anything about Airmaster, nor did I know that it had any sort of reputation. It was just one anime among the many but I got interested in it just because one artist I've been stalking has made nice ( yaoi ) fanart out of it.
So I sought Airmaster out and watched it, without having any idea on what I was going to see.
I was surprised to find that the main characters were females and not only that, the yuri/lesbian implications were quite evident ( to the point where they werent even implications anymore ). I didn't mind at all. And BIG big bonus: the females were NOT annoying, generic, overly cheerfull, bug-eyed, cutsey wutesy woo twerps with glittery hair and two out-of-proportion sticks for legs. The characters were exaggarated, but realistic somehow. It was nice and refreshing.
Sure, it would be a miracle if there was a book, movie, anime, manga or whatever out there in which there wasn't a single utterly annoying character. So yeah, this anime had those too but sometimes one learns to like the annoying characters in the "that's a good character" level. Maybe the people who made the anime didn't exactly mean to make a character likeable?
The story itself does leave alot to hope for. It's often the same problem with all anime series: it's friggin' confusing or plain. I immidiately got the feeling that once again the makers of the anime trust that the person who sees the anime has read the manga.
In Airmaster, it was plain and a bit stupid... plus it the series ended like in the middle of everything. I didn't feel like anything was concluded. So storywise, it was a bit of a dissappointment.
What saves it was the quality of each invidual episode. It wasn't a funny anime per se but it was amusing, and impressive. Don't get me wrong: I do NOT like fighting animes generally. I find them utterly boring. But Airmaster was beautifull, plus I do find some charm in the Street Fighting romantique ( can you say that? ). Besides Maki herself is really likeable character, as Airmaster and as Maki, her fighting style is cool.
I understand if someone would diss this anime because of the lacking story, but I'd say one should still give it a chance ( and maybe if one likes it, she could see about the manga? ).
However, if you're the type that likes cute ( and stupid ) girls in Sailor uniforms or highschool boys who sprout wings every now and then, I don't think this anime is for you.
If you're a bit perverted ( to every way ) and find amusement from dirty jokes, yet enjoy a bit of coolness every now and then, Airmaster should be well worth a view.

| I really enjoyed this anime. It pisses me off that everyone bad mouths this anime. I think it's extremely easy to get into and get really hooked. Sure the characters do look outdated, but it's refreshing to see something old in a new anime.

| Quite possibly the worst anime I have had the misfortune to watch, next to Hellsing. An agonizing 27 episode run. It's amazing that I had the will-power to stick with it.
Firstly, I must comment on the plot line...What the hell. I mean was there really a story behind it, I don't think so at all. It was just mindless fighting, no essence, no reason behind it. Well actually the writers did make a pathetic attempt in instilling some motive in the main character, Maki- she fights because her mom died and it replaces the gap left in her life- an incredibly idiotic reason, if one indeed. Even though it was just senseless fighting and cliche "I must get stronger to beat 'Airmaster'"
plots, that alone I could bare, but the end really killed me. Eternals, common give me a break. I mean where the hell did that come from.
Secondly what's the big fixation about giant breasts, they just look ridiculous. Damn, way out of proportion.
Thirdly, the characters are idiots, especially Sakiyama Kaori. Everytime she spoke I wanted to murder her. It's absolutely amazing, the fact that sh'es been kicked and punched in the jaw a jillion times, and yet she still has the ability to talk, all without ever visiting a hospital- get real. I don't even want to waste my time commenting on the other characters, just know that Maki is a vague, mindless, puppet-like idiot. And why the hell does Julietta even like Maki.
The music was nothing to fuss over either, it was just plain, although the last song was allright-sort of- that's the only reason that I gave it a 5.
Teh animation was probably the only thing that held this pointles anime together- I honestly would only give it a 7.5 though.
Overall, this anime was torture to finish. So if you know whats good for you, stay far away from it.

| People who like Airmaster had better like Dragonball Z. I really wanted to like Airmaster, and the first episode was great. However, in my opinion, (up to episode 19) only episodes 1, 5-7, 10 and 17 have been good (11 was alright until the end when it became a little too ludicrous for me to handle). What I liked about Dragonball Z is that it was absurd in light of our reality, and stretched the limits of it's own, but at the same time stuck to it pretty well (the rules of its reality). By creating a universe where people can do what they do I was really entertained. Any time they pushed the envelope and had somebody one-up somebody else I was enthralled. In contrast, Airmaster doesn't really have any rules for its reality. It's like a bad action film, where, depending on the whim of the writer at that time, a certain move will work in one instance, but won't in the next. The battles are too short and uninspiring, with Maki always easily winning. What frustrates me MOST about that is not that she's just so damn good, like Goku or whoever, but that her opponents always suck. They fall for simple shit, making dumb mistakes, not taking advantage of opportunities, etc. I mean, come on, is it really plausible, no matter what set of rules you apply to the reality of the show you're doing, to have an opponent come at you SPINNING slowly in the air and not be able to simply move out of her range? At first I thought her fighting style was intriguing because of its originality, but now I just think it's silly. That and Mina really IS one of the most annoying characters ever, as other reviewers have said.
These types of shows are difficult to do because they're outside our realm of possibility, but at the same time we inadvertently and unfairly apply ours to it nonetheless. Though, at the same time, we do so because the writers lead us to believe a certain law within our reality applies to this one as well, so it just becomes a muddle.
There has to be rules of nature, their own laws of physics, that we can understand and accept - it's our nature to draw these conclusions a few episodes in. If they don't adhere to them we just feel betrayed and see the show as something of a waste of time. How can you learn and play along when the rules keep changing?
I've watched up to 19 or 20, but stopped. I saw the middle half of 21 accidentally once and thought the fight going on was cool, but I don't even feel like going on watching 20 or 30 minutes more to get to it, for fear that the show will suck again right afterwards. If you think I'm wrong please e-mail me.

| Ok. I am now going to review Air Master correctly. Unlike the rest of the reviews on this site, I'm going to pick this anime apart piece by piece. There will be no "this anime sucks" with no reasoning or "this anime is so cool" with no reasoning. Here it is, from a veteran anime viewer, a 100% honest review of Air Master.
Let me make this first point. I have seen Narutaru, FLCL, Elfen Lied, Eva, Gasaraki, Gantz, and countless other "weird anime". This by far, is the WEIRDEST anime I have ever seen. Let me explain why -
Going into Air Master, you probably think you have the style of the anime down just by looking at pictures, previews, hell the opening theme animation makes this show look incredible. But if you watch the first 3 or so episodes, you realize that this is not the show you thought it would be. Without a doubt, 13 of the first 16 episodes are probably the WORST anime I have ever seen. The other 3 are decent in there stand alone nature. There is no story set up, no character history, no sense period. You're introduced to all of these characters, but they don't hold any weight. Especially the fighters that Maki, the main character, faces throughout the beginning of the series. They pose absolutely no challenge for her and you start to think if she's just going to win every fight in 15 seconds. Without a doubt, the biggest example of crap in this anime is the Sakamoto Julietta saga. First, you think this character will be the first glimpse of an archrival in this show, however by the second episode of this saga, you don't even know if you want to watch this anime anymore. It makes NO SENSE whatsoever. There are no words to describe these episodes. Not to mention the incredibly annoying subcharacters a la Renge, Sakiyama Kaori, and Mina..if you watch this anime, you can proudly say you have seen the most annoying characters ever in anime history.
So quick review, episodes 1-16..cruel and unusual punishment.
And now episodes 17-27 - some of the greatest fighting anime ever produced period. That's right, you read right.
Beginning with the Pro Wrestling saga into the BRILLIANT Fukamichi Ranking saga, this is what you thought the anime was going to be from episode 1.
I swear to God the show does a complete 180 degree spin from slapstick comedy/action to full blown serious drama/action. You saw slight hints throughout the first 16 episodes that there was something greater happening, and when it is finally revealed, you can't help but question why the show's entire focus wasn't on this story line in the first place. The roster of fighters explodes with extremely original fighters each with their own unique style. The fighting becomes the focus of the story and absolutely shines, not for 15 seconds either, but entire episode lengths sometimes. What is great is it's not just Maki's fights that are the main attractions, in fact, the other fighters' matches are sometimes far superior. And probably the best part of it all, a coherent story that actually makes sense and ends in a very interesting way.
Quick review of episodes 17-27 - are these the same people who made episode 1-16? Did they finally come down from there LSD trip?
To give a stat by stat breakdown -
Animation and Sound: These are the best points of this anime. The animation style is extremely good. There are those idiot anime purists that think every anime character should have pointy noises and big eyes, this thankfully is not that kind of show. The style and character designs of this show are extremely attractive, and the fights are without a doubt BEAUTIFULLY animated. What I love is that they even switch from "realistic" designs to "traditional anime" designs depending on the mood of the episode. The sound, especially the opening/ending themese are insanely good and really add to this show.
Story: As I said above, the entire first half of this show is utter crap. There is no direction, episodes don't flow, and to be honest there are completely ridiculous and pointless scenes/fights. Just watch the Sakamoto Julietta saga and trust me you WILL understand. Once the Pro-Wrestling saga begins and segways into the Fukamichi Ranking saga, this show becomes the epitome of an amazing fighting anime and the story becomes full focused. You cannot call yourself a fighting anime expert unless you've seen the brilliance that is within these episodes.
Character: One thing that drags down the story, no matter what saga, is definitely the character design. Some of the most stupid, ridiculous, and annoying characters are in this anime. If you can't take loud, obnoxious, whining, completely stupid characters, I don't think you'll last until the end of this anime. Especially once Miori is introduced..oh God..
Conclusion: You honestly cannot form an opinion of this anime unless you bear through all 27 episodes. There are things in the first 16 episodes that are foreshadowing the events of later, and to be honest you have to watch them to understand what the hell is going on in the later half of the series. But you WILL NOT understand what is going on in the first half no matter what. Air Master is by far the best comeback series I have ever seen in the sense that first half is so bad, but the second half is off the scale in terms of quality. You can't help but question if it really is the same characters, story, hell..the same anime.
If you like slapstick comedy with no point, watch the first 16 episodes of Air Master. If you want to see probably the best short series of fighting anime in terms of choreography, characters, suspense, and story..then watch the second half of Air Master.

| When I started watching this series, I kept thinking to myself, "Why does it feel like I'm sinning?" Honestly, the "story" part of it is so bad, it's not even really worth mentioning. I'm hoping the whole thing was parody, because otherwise, it would have no reason to give the viewer so many aneurisms. I seriously had to close the door to my room once, even though no one else was around.
However, the fighting is so good, as long as they weren't doing anything else, I had no urge to stop watching. It's absolutly fantastic.

| This is another scanty fighting anime without any thought. The animation was mediocre as is the sound. The story is pretty awful, if it even does have a story and the characters are quite annoying and lacking development. I'd say that the main character's development is so horrible that even a couple episode of the top ten animes that are on this websites list will surpass in the level of character development as to this whole series of Air Master (although I have watched a little less than half, I will make an assumption). I would only recommend watching this if you like action-packed anime which this anime only is. But if you want an anime that has a bit of substance, don't waste your time on this.

| On its own this anime seems like your basic ruff and tumble fighting anime. However, there are tons of characters that are used as comic relief and this anime touches upon taboo areas such as homosexual infatuations in a light and amusing way. As for the plot as a stand alone its a bit lacking. However at its conclusion it does leave many strings hanging that lead me to believe there will be an Air Master 2 to tie up all the look ends. Case in point, what are the eternals mentioned in the last episode, and who is that ghostly girl? Why is Maki likened to this Jackie woman by several people throughout the story? I think this could go somewhere interesting.

First of all i like to state that Aikawa Maki is one Hot babe... i mean dont people get tired from those cute small anime chicks now and days. Maki with her Long legs, her rough up red hair, those dearing eyes... well u get the picture.
The Animation of the show is unquie and i found it fit well with the fighting scenes. hmm but one thing which probably made most think... what the heck were they thinking giving Nakanotani Mina such huge BOOBS!! really that didnt look sexy at all.
The opening and closing songs of Air Master i really enjoy listening too. It nice to hear some sort of rock N roll music coming from japan.
Story.. hmmm it preatty much straight foward and it seem they left out some stuff ***SPOILER*** Like that one guy who went to india and never came back whats up with that? Anyway most fights end in one show (which i like) which made room for more new fighters to battle with Air Master.
Character in the show are very intersting. Like Sakiyama Kaori and Inui Renge the comdey relief in the show. In matter of fact most of the characters in the show had something weird going on with them which make them unquie.
The value of this show is depending if u like to have deep story plots or just some action. I my self would watch it again just to watch the fighting part.
I really Enjoy watching this show and i hate anyone else past this show up. It may have a slow first or three ep but after that it gets rolling along just fine.

| Air master actually doesnt have a story. Its just fighting to be the best was fun to watch but the action isnt that great either somehow I did watch all the episodes. The main character is kinda ugly=P It would be nice if she looked better. Her companions was also weird. One was real small the other has hugeeee boobs. It has also some hillarious scenes=). If you like pointless fighting like ikkitousen and tenjou tenge then you will also like this anime.

| I have to agree... people, don't watch the first episode or 2 and make judgement. Sure, the style of character design is original. Wow, -original-... take that into consideration. Don't you get tired of generic looking Anime characters every now and then? Those looking for a complaint can't say that Escaflowne sucked because the characters had pointy noses, can you? Those of you not looking at animation as an "art form" and expect everything to look a certain way have no room for imagination anymore. :\ Granted, this still is -very muchly- Anime style. And well animated too; the fights don't have many still frames or "cheats" used in using static planes. Give it that much, please.
Story wise, come on... this is a fighting-based Anime. This isn't Evangelion, or RahXephon, or Ghost in the Shell for crying out loud. What I can tell you is that there is alot more story going on than, say, an entire 300-episode run of Dragon Ball Z. That much I can tell you, and Maki's a pretty cool character.
As far as characters are concerned, Maki and the fighters she's pit up against are cool. Just like Naruto has characters with that "cool factor", so does this Anime. However, I have to agree with one thing: the supporting friends of Maki are not so great. Of particular great pain is the huge-breasted Mina; she's not annoying because of her largely endowed chest or her gender preferences, she's annoying because she just is annoying. No mistaking this... so stop blaming her annoying on either a) breasts or b) being lesbian. As for the other girls in the troupe, they're mostly weak and play a very "stay in the back and gawk at the fights" sort of ordeal. Think DBZ and Krillin/Yamcha. Same thing almost. Renge provides some sort of funny here and there actually. Now, the characters that Maki faces (and Maki herself) are actually cool, interesting to watch, and just zany at times. :) You'll like that part very muchly.
Overall, you should watch this Anime and give it your opinion. After episode 4, you'll get the overall idea of what this Anime is and isn't. If it's your cup of tea, you'll definately love it. If you can't deal with some of the taboos/characters/character design issues, then I guess not. Your choice.

| An almost entirely plot-less fighting show that had a chance to be great despite it, but ends up being only above average.

| Whether you like fanservice or not will make or break this show for you.
If you feel it cheapens the experience then you are going to be disappointed with this show. If you love fanservice however, you'll likely enjoy the show more than I did.
