This movie is the direct continuation of the series so it's normal this movie feels ''just'' like a long episode of the original series.

The animation has been improved and is really great, there's really nothing to complain, just the fact that today we have animes which are way better animated (Karas,GitS:II)

The sound stayed the same, that means: the same great voice actors and a great backgroundmusic perfectly supporting the atmosphere

The story is typical what concerns the fight but the new aspect was the relationship between ippo and kumi, really nice

Sanada the oppenent wasn't introduced that good as in the manga, that's my only complain. But he was still likeable and all the other characters from the series also had their appearance.

I'm definitely going to watch it again, the movie is a lot of fun just like the series.

For Hajime no Ippo fans it's of course a must-see.

Hajime no Ippo Champion Road.. what can i really say?

Animation and Sound:
As expected the animation scenes are better and more detailled than it the series, and the same thing can be said about the sound whitch has the same great voices but more carefully thought out bg music and sound effects.

Story:
It could be considered another episode of the anime as I said before, and it actually follows the 2-3 episode arches of one fight that was present in the series... It has the same old feel and clyches to it, same build up of character development, and comedy in the training period followed by a very close and suspenced fight who's winner is determined only by a small advantage called bond of trust... It puts Ippo's punch and will power against Sendo's finesse and bio-mechanical knoledge in a terrific fight ends as an example of how powerful the bond between Ippo and coach Kamogawa... it might be a repetitive story from the series but for the fans it should be more than that, even dough it could hve been more than that as most of us expected another more meaningful opponent like Myata, i thought tht fight was predestined to be the ending as it was one of the the reasons of Ippo's desire to become champion.

Characters:
Same counscious, humble and hard working Ippo, same rough couch, same baka trio filled with jokes, if you loved them in the series you'll love them here to... Sendo on the other hand was exagerated as i doubt even a doctor can diagnosticate in a precise manner his oponnent in a fight and still watch out for punches or throw some, or maybe it's just that i'm dissapointed it wasn't Myata in that ring.

Value and Enjoyment:
Aldough it brings nothing new to the anime's overall conclusion or pattern of storytelling it still is great to watch for all those fans out there... As for me? I enjoyed it very much, but I would have enjoyed a second season of the series even more, or maybe a fight against his first opponent and friend Myata.

Unfortunately this just seems as another episode of Hajime no Ippo. There is nothing really special here and generally follows a similar formulae used in the anime. To get an idea of the movie, I am posting the review of the series which should give you an idea of what the movie is about.

****Review of Hajime no Ippo TV Series****
This series is extremely your typical sport anime. Hero keeps on powering up on every match turning the tables at the last minute. The strongest appeal in a series such as this has always been characters and Hajime no Ippo has some real good ones. The supporting cast is a laugh riot and every scene involving the gang from the gym is hilarious. Surprisingly the matches are pretty intense and really make you coming back for more. There is a certain joy when Ippo wins or any other character wins who is from the gym. Probably the best part of the anime is that it takes time to develop characters that are supposed to be rivals. That makes each match shown even more enjoyable as the intensity can be viewed from both sides that play to win.

I'm not going to say it deserves any good rewatchability points but still keeps you interested. Watch if you are a fan of boxing in general or sports anime. But for others it is a good timepass, nothing more.

This is truly one of the most enjoyable movies I've ever seen. It takes the essence of Ippo's fighting spirit, moves him up against a type who is totally opposite that of Ippo (finesse rather than power), and throws them into a roped off platform to battle it out both mind and body.

With that said, characters, sound, and story elements really take a back seat for this slice of Ippo. These categories arne't important in this anime as the combined execution, which is nearly flawless as the tension is heightened perfectly to the viewer's dramatic involvement.

I would definitely would recommend this anime to those who even unfamiliar to Hajime no Ippo's pace. I haven't been this edge of my seat for a long time.

Heh, this was a pretty damn good follow-up to the series. The fight with Sanada was nothing short of every other match we've seen, really great stuff. Plus all of the scenes involving Ippo and Kumi don't hurt either.

It's an hour and a half of more Hajime no Ippo excitement, so don't miss out on it if you've watched the series.

A great movie to continue with the addiction of wanting more from this series. It was very scary to see such an opponent face off with Ippo, but of course, GUTS, are so important. I had fun with it, but wanted more with the love relationship, oh well.

Taking place directly after the last TV episode, Champion Road is mostly an extended episode in of itself as Ippo defends his featherweight title for the first time. This doesnt stray at all from what we know about Ippo TV. All the characters are here and the story makes a few steps forward, although it's still left open for continuation. Being a theatrical release the animation has been cleaned up a bit but the identifiable characteristics of Ippo's characters are all still there. Can't really go into the details of the story w\o spoiling anything, but the fight is just as good as those in the television series. Make sure to watch this after you've seen tv as there will be a few flashbacks that will spoil the major fights of the series.

One of the best things about this movie is that, although it continues the story of such a great series, the series doesnt need to be watched beforehand. The story stands alone, and everything is explained enough to prove thoroughly enjoyable. Of course, watching the series beforehand will allow you to notice many jokes that carry over. Of course, at this point Ippo is already the champion, so he already has all of his kick-ass skills under his belt.

One noticable improvement from the series is the improved animation and sound that come along with a movie. The sound was amazing with many of the moves, and with the improved animation, the already awesome-looking fight scenes look even cooler. Combined, this makes watching the Dempsey Roll almost never look old.

The movie is equivolent to watch three episodes seemlessly. Hence it delivers the same caliber of story telling, but with improved animation. Again, the movie is on par with the show as it features more of the excellent characters and build up which made the 76 episode TV show so enjoyable. Other than the story surrounding Ippo, the opponent and his coach are lame increase to the ranks of Ippo's victims. Mostly because their build up and angle prove more cliche than everything prior.
The boxing match itself follows the usual beat the shit out of Ippo until he comes back formula. Its tried and true, but still fun though this is not exactly the most exciting match in the series.
Besides it was never the fighting in the ring that made this series fun to watch. It was always the preperation and interaction prior. The boxing matches just reinforced it.

I hear the manga still runs in Japan after 65 or so volumes. Aside from the excellent OVA, hopefully there will be more animated Hajime no Ippo in the near future.

Hajime no ippo is one of the best series and this movie is just an extra round. I love the characters in Hajime no ippo and the boxing match are nice to watch. This anime just cant make me bored or uninterested. Highly recommend! You dont have to watch the serie first to see this one. Here he's already the champ and must defend his title.

As with most movies based on a series, Hajime no Ippo Champion Road is dissapointing. What we have here is just an average episode extended to 90 minutes. The fight itself wasn't nearly as exciting as other fights in the series, or even Kimura vs. Mashiba OVA. Obviously you'll have to watch the series first, so this one is for Ippo fans only.

Its a fighting anime, so I couldn't rate story too high. Beside that, its very close to the series in both flow and qualities. Animation is a slightly different style, with colors that look bleached and brighter. Even though I preferred the original animation of the series, I will say that the movie's animation is probably better quailty.

Superb animation. Great improvement over the series. Music and voice acting is still great. Story is awesome (first title defense). The characters have awesome chemistry together. Definetly worth having. I loved it.

Champion Road is a great continuation to the amazing series! So great that the time passed in what seemed like an instant - it was over before I realized it had begun. It's wicked to see HNI in its full glory without any still shots, just beautifully animated all-out action, combined with a bit of character development and some hilarious jokes.
The few problems I had with the TV series, such as overdramatizing, etc. are not present here, which makes HNI even more enjoyable...
Actually I don't think that Ippo's fight against the challenger was the most exciting one so far, but it was well done so that doesn't really matter.
Anyway, Champion Road is another nice glimpse into Ippo's journey and his troubles and growth as a champion. However I think that HNI really needs to continue with its TV run. Specials and OVAs are nice but they are way too short bites of the manga's greatness. It definitely deserves to be adapted all the way, especially considering how much better it is than current favorites in the fighting genre (like Naruto) and all sports animes altogether. Whatever happens, I just hope that HNI anime won't succumb to crappiness like other shows which continued their runs as OVAs (Love Hina comes to mind).

p.s. Champion Road has the best darn racap I've ever seen, great review of the last fight in the TV series! :D

It's more Ippo. And that's never bad. I sincerely hope that they manage to animate all of Ippo's manga...all 8 zillion volumes of it.

As for the movie itself, it's just another one of Ippo's fights, and the sad truth is that the best part of it is the recap of his last fight. Which doesn't mean it's bad, it just means that I was gripping the edge of my seat a little less hard. There is simply no way that the fight can live up to the 4-episode magnum opus that was the second Ippo vs Sendo fight, but it is still enormously entertaining to watch.

It should be noted that the medical student Sanada is probably the least realistic fighter in the entire Ippo series. His special attacks border on the mystical, with his ability to instantly diagnose the body's condition essentially on touch, and while it is by no means the ludicrousness of Prince of Tennis, it's more than a little out of place in Ippo.

This movie was so awesome. The level of art and animation was such a step above the tv series that I was breathtaken (especially seeing the new way the Dempsey Roll is animated ^_^). Ippo's opponent was cool as well, with him being a doctor, and knowing the weaknesses of the human body, it made for a very suspenseful fight. Highly recommended if you've seen the whole series.

Champion Road is based on awesome series called Hajime no Ippo. This time around, Makunoichi Ippo has to defend his title against a part time doctor/part time boxer(former champion of class below Ippo). I found this new character uninspired and boring, and the fight itself wasn't even as good as some of the fights in the TV series. There are very little attractions aside from the fight, hence this movie offers very little enjoyment, at least to me. In fact, recently releaesd Kimura vs Mashiba OVA was much better than Champion Road movie. For huge Ippo fans only, others stray clear.
