Gad Guard sticks out as something special and unique to me because it's a mecha show that doesn't conform tremendously to typical 'mecha show qualities'. The protagonist Hajiki searches for answers and stumbles upon Lightning, a Techode born from a mysterious Gad. It sounds pretty typical thus far but Gad Guard cleverly turns the story upside down as it goes along. Each episode reveals a little more about the inter-character relationships and how the characters feel about each other. By the end of the series, you're left with a feeling of satisfaction as everything is wrapped up beautifully.

The storyline itself is filled with entertaining background and scene-setting, taking place mostly in Night-Town or Day-Town and the interesting Unit Factions, Gad Guard's a tale about transition from gangster-life into a life of self-awareness. This doesn't only happen to Hajiki, but all those other Techode owners around him too.

The characters in Gad Guard are all imperfect, and that is the crafted excellence of them all, for they are on emotive journeys to discover themselves. This element of self-exploration is where Gad Guard truly alienates itself from simpler mecha shows and becomes something special!

The mystery of the Gads perseveres until the final two episodes, when everything becomes crystal-clear and you as the viewer get a really: "oh yeah, no wonder!" feeling as everything fits into place. Gad Guard does not disappoint. And while some episodes may seem unnecessary and rather filler-like, yes they ARE fillers and Gad Guard doesn't attempt to hide that.

With wonderful scene-setting, a dangerously real world and characters with different stances and perspectives all amalgamated into one series, Gad Guard achieves what most other anime could not, and that is depth.

At first this anime was only of passing interest to me. As each episode develops, nothing much happens. The characters themselves don't know what to do with the robots and we're just shown the day to day lives of them. There's no grand plot, no sudden change in characters' ambition. Their lives just go on.

and the main character thinks so too.

so I kept waiting and wanting for more. And the anime gradually satisfies it. Towards the end, I come to really enjoy this anime. As a fan of animes with some kind of depth, I'd rank this anime as one of those that are close to being the best. Actually, the very 1st ep already tells us what this anime is about: dreams.

In real life, we think of our dreams and chase after what we think ARE our dreams. We work day and night, just to earn our living. Even having something powerful dropped into our laps won't change everything. Reality stays the same. The twist in the end, is that Hajiki has finally found what he wants to do with his life, and that answer he already has it. He just doesn't realise it till the very end.

The anime leads us to believe that he wants to fulfill his dad's dream. oh, but that isn't it....

a very enjoyable anime that is thought provoking and nostalgic.

The art style and presentation of Gad Guard is very similar to FLCL. Except Gad Guard tries to imbue a story into the crazy robot fighting. I watched this not too long ago (about 2 years ago) and all I can remember from it is some super large blue transforming robot (Gad Guard). I also remember some sphere cubes, and a silent antagonist boy who isn't really that evil and has his own black robot. Oh right, there also some kid in some beanie who was the main character. In other words, unmemorable.

Other than the animation style and design, there isn't anything that stands out in this anime. Story, characters... what? There are way too many characters in this series and not enough *umph*. In its bare essence, all this anime is two people who have some rivalry with each other.

Just a regular mecha anime (not Gundam) with kids in an urban almost hip-hop setting. Tries too hard to be cool.

Good animation, good music, interesting premise, but from what I've seen up until it got licensed (episode 11) the story goes nowhere. It's not good when nearly halfway through the series nothing really appears to be happening. I couldn't get myself to really care much about the characters, the only one who interested me much was Katana and he doesn't do much after the first several episodes.

You know when the main characters start doing tricks on a skateboard this anime is inappropriate for anyone over 12. Childish Digimon animation, flat characters, and the same-old generic boy-meets-mecha plot. Oh and did I mention this cheap rip-off tries to imitate the style of Cowboy Bebop? This anime is a complete waste of time.

GadGuard is the kind of series that makes you want to grab the creators and shake them until their insides rattle out.... A series that looks this good shouldn't be such a mess of characterisations and plot.

By episode 4 I was struggling to find a point to this series.... Things were happening and the characters knew why, even if I was left with absolutely no idea.

You get the impression from GadGuard that all of these characters have ulterior motives for everything they do, but I get the faintest inkling that this is more paranoia than an actual plot element.

What I mean is, there are just SO many series that introduce characters and plot elements with an eye on future revelations in anime that one really starts to get jaded by it. In GadGuard one is hard pressed to find a reason why one should empathise with many of the characters, especially with the speed that things happen....

Moreso, we are introduced to characters en masse, one after the other. These characters might be important at later stages of the series, but in the early stages they tend to just stand around and do nothing (and add nothing to the overall plot). Arashi, for instance, might be pretty to look at, but in the early stages she doesn't do much of any worth except hang around like a bad smell. And then there is the fact that she's a pretty and naive young thing living in a "crime ridden" city like Night Town.... on her own....

Bleh.... At least the thing looks cool.

well i have to say. reminiscent of cowboy bebop. the stylic jazzy tunes are very good which somewhat appeals to me. the plot is about basically a boy who stumbles on Gad.. the characters remind me of those kiddie pokemon/yugioh shows but the themes are more geared toward mixed genres of batman, with the dark city, and mech battles. overall, its a good watch, decent plot, but great music.

Pretty good series. The only thing that's not so good is the animation, but it's still nice. Sound is very original, with lots of jazz. The story is quite interesting and as after each episode you are more curious about what really are the "gads". The cities where the story takes place is also very different from most animes, making the series even better. Character's were developed on the "group of 5 heros base", like Saint Seiya, Gundam Wing, and so on. While not so original, I think that al caracters are quite interesting and their development is starting to actually happen (I've watched untill ep 15).
Overall, not a master piece, but a quite enjoyable anime. I'm enjoying it very much, and I think it's going to get a lot better than it already is.

I think Gad Guard is one of the better works of GONZO in that it interweaves the Japanese obsession of mecha with the world in the western comic. The first impression of this anime may be WEIRD, BIZARRE and so forth but once you get past the first few episodes, you'll begin to be drawn into this enchanting world!

Though I don't see anything horribly wrong with this show, I don't see anything terribly compelling about it either. I'm not sure what it is--the weird looking mecha, the slowish pacing, or just the good sized handful of recent shows that jumped out at me (Scrapped Princess, Ninja Scroll, etc), I just couldn't get into it.

On a good note, very pretty animation. Typical Gonzo. It just wasn't for me. The characters are rehashed and the premise is cliched--I don't feel that it follows the formula very well. Don't get me wrong though. Anime based off of tried and true formulas can be very cool and very watchable, such as Full Metal Panic and Gundam Seed (I'm using mecha based anime as a basis of comparison, so we're at least close to comparing apples to apples). It just doesn't have the 'human factor' that you can relate to in the episodes.

Just a personal opinion. Perhaps in a slower anime season, I would easily keep up w/ it, but as it stands...

Not sure what to make of this. Seems like a cross between Cowboy Bebop(jazz music) and Digimon (without so much talking). It's set in some sort of alternative New York. And the main character drives a moped to do mailing deliveries. He delivers an strange package. On the way, he opened it accidently and found a cube inside. Later on, one the streets he encounters the same cube which then combines itself with metal to form a giant fighting robot.
Like I said, I am not sure what to make of it.

Hmmmm........I guess the best way to describe this series is that it's yet another cliche riddled story of kid finds big robot and becomes the hero of the world. But at least this time they gave us good animation and sound. I'll update the review after 4 or 5 reviews. At least among the newer series this isn't as bad as E's Otherwise.
