Extremely good OAV. If you had to describe it using already done stories, its like Romeo&Juliet on roids, with incest. The vampirism was definite allegory to sex, the fact that kazuna and chizuna were sucking each other's blood....obvious incest there. Also, chizuna's relationship with her father hints at incest as well. The story takes place in like a month or so...Characters seem very distant from everything, the world and others. Very nice effect with the bland colours so that blood would stand out a hell lot more. Very artistically done, mostly for emo's and goths I guess. Story didn't develop too far but the background was nice. May very well be the best tragic story I have ever seen.

Uh, I dunno. This OVA was downright disturbing, not in a gross distrubing way, nor a ewww I hate anything resembling incest way, it just made me feel really uncomfortable. I had to stop watching it occasionally because I was feeling really weird during some scenes.
That doesn't mean it isn't good anime, it's a pretty good anime. It's got really good style, the story is nice the visuals are nice the sound is nice. Everything fits the mood right. The use of lighting is brilliant.
The characters, hmmm, you don't really care that much about them, but that, in it's own way is good. If you cared too much about these characters you would end up being unable to watch what was happening sometimes, it would make you queasy.
If you can deal with the fact that this is a disturbing anime, that has very little character depth, but a great story, you should watch it. It's short, and it doesn't waste too much time on any side stories, and there is some closure to the story.

I think the animation in this anime was very good but to me animation in this day and age in anime is not an issue since alot of the companies are focusing on looking nice oppose to substance. The music in this anime was good it set the atmosphere to have that dark and dramatic feel. The ending theme was very good and I just loved it.
I like the concept of the story and I think the story is just great but that is not the problem.
The characters are not bad or anything but they are not very connecting with the audience. you have the story in front of you and you know why this and this happens but the characters need to come alive and they don't do that completely in this series and I have seen alot of very good series so I should know what I am saying.
The value of this anime is high up for those people who are into plot and like the facts of stories and just would like to see something unique from everything else that is on the market. For those who don't like to think please don't bother.
I did enjoy this anime simply because the story was so good. The story is so good to the point were you are expecting more from the characters. My only prob is that Hitsugi No Uta's cast wasn't as strong with their dramatic and somewhat tragic tale.

Hitsuji no Uta falls to victim of high expectations. Leafing through the manga, it appeared something similar to Boogiepop Phantom. But...

The idea of story is good but the characters lack something. Through the four episodes it felt really irrelevant to me what happened to them. Good atmosphere of suspense/horror was next thing I looked for. A couple of times there was something clutching my heart but mostly I stared the screen indifferently. The animation or sounds weren't impressive enough to great any mood for horror.

A slow-paced story with only a minumum of good scenes and uninteresting characters means that I was bored most of the time watching. Thanks to those couple good scenes the series can be watched but not if you're an action fan. There's very little of that. Hope the manga is better.

This is the first time I have seen an actual vampire "drama". No action, no gore, just an actual drama. And a fantastic one at that. If anyone even remotely likes the genre, this is definitely worth a look. I loved how the anime started and ended with its good style and riveting atmosphere.

The only shortcoming was the animation which sufferred from a lot of repitition and bad character designs. Other than I liked the OST even if it was small but for 4 episodes it wasnt bad. The ED was very nice.

Recommended watch!

I was expecting...better...from such a recent anime -- and an OVA at that. Typically, OVAs have a higher animation quality than their TV counterparts, but in Hitsuji no Uta I was disappointed to find lots of cycling and redundant animation. The character designs are quite close to the original manga, and the muted color palette suits the atmosphere well. Nothing too phenomenal in the music category, and the story could have benefited from a few more episodes.
Still, I think it's a nice adaptation of the manga and might be of interest to people who are looking for a different spin on the vampire myth. Of course I would also recommend it to fans of the original comic.

If there was ever an anime hurt by limited production value, it's Hitsuji no Uta. This anime could have benefited so much from a higher budget and perhaps even a media conversion from OVA to an actual TV series or even a movie. I myself, a casual anime viewer, could spot the discrepancies in Hitsuji no Uta obviously caused by finance, and that's a shame, because this anime had some great ideas that were impaired by its hampered execution.

A tragedy indeed, because Hitsuji no Uta had a genuinely good plot behind it. Unfortunately, and as per most of the issues in the anime, it suffered from severe difficulties in presentation. The plot progression in this anime is possibly one of the worst I've ever had to sit through. It moves slow as hell, and I swear to God, almost nothing memorable or important happened during episodes 2 and 3. In a 4 episode OVA series, this is inexcusable. The plot feels disjointed and cobbled together, and leaves some loose ends untied as it concludes in a decidedly marginal ending. I don't think the anime particularly knew what to do with itself in such a short scope of time. Time progression is even more confusing in this anime; the viewer has to infere how much time has taken place between the beginning and the end of the anime, and it is completely unclear. If it had been a short time, then why were Chizuna and Kazuna so freaking close? And if it had been a long time, then Hitsuji no Uta did a terrible job communicating that passage of time. Though the plot was clear, I just ended up confused on several fronts when the anime finally came to an end.

Characters are probably the only thing that you can properly develop given a low budget and only four half-hour episodes, but Hitsuji no Uta botched this, to an extent. Chizuna and Kazuna are done phenomenally, no doubt about that. But what about Yaegashi? Her potentially intriguing character ends up completely flat, for one, and she doesn't play into the main plot at all by episode 4, except for a gratuitous tear-jerker moment. Minase doesn't get any development either, aside from his obsession with aiding Chizuna. The two vampiric siblings, however, are very interesting characters indeed. It's fascinating to watch the symbiotic relationship that unfolds between them; it's kind of like a relationship of necessity moreso than one of blood. I'm not terribly wild about their characters as single people, but watching them together was one of the strongest parts of the anime.

Hitsuji no Uta is an interesting study on both vampirism and social ostracization, and manages to combine them into an idea which never really picked up from its potential. Like I said, this would be fantastic with movie or TV treatment, and OVA is just the worst form of media it could have asked for. And as a closing thought, how does the title relate to the anime at all?

Dark, mobid, gritty, depressing. All great ways to describe this awesome horror OVA. Four episodes used very well with the story progressing smoothly in each up untill the finale at the end. Deffinetly not for someone looking for a good (happy) time. This is pretty heavy stuff but dang, it's put together very, very well. Special mention to the great use of ambience in the anime. The way the sound is used in this does an outstanding job of pulling you into the show.

Morbid. That's what Hitsuji no uta is all about, with the smell of death hanging over all 4 episodes. The characters are depressing, the story is depressing, and the pace the show moves at is so wretched you almost feel you're being dragged into the grave. The ending was a bit of a disappointment, but overall still a pretty good watch. For fans of dark and dreary, slow-moving dramas.

Its a great dark and moody show. There has been a shortage of this kind of shows recently so it somehow hits a soft spot (oh how i miss noir and .hack type of shows). Overall it has great character development, superb ambience and above all it is UNIQUE. Only downside to the show is the ending i feel, because when it all ended i felt it was abit too short (cant really do anything about it though since its a 4 ep ova). But at the end its still a great show which i would wholeheartedly recommend.

I really like this one quite a bit. It's extremely stylized, with strange uses of color, slightly ugly (but interesting) character designs, and lots of flashback. If you're looking for something with a lot of action, move on.

The storyline is disturbing on many levels, and it's very dark and sad.

I thought the whole idea of them being "vampires" was very interesting, because they are completely unlike the normal fantasy/horror idea of vampires. It's kind of the "anti-Anne Rice" ;)

Watched the first 3 episode so far, and must said it somewhat a melancholy drama type. It can't be helped since the theme deal w/ Chisana and Kazuna decided to continue living their painful life. Being scare and confuse by their illness, they hopelessly try to support one another. Truly a character driven story. Each episode provide more insight into the charactor mind and better define their relationships.

Finished the last episode 4. The whole dark mood is carried through the end. Overall the whole serie was worth the time spending.

I think most of the other serious reviews kinda say it all. It will appeal to those who are into drama and character-driven animes. I was a little shaken by the incestous undertones, but I suppose that is part of it all.

I've seen the three episodes released up 'till now and I enjoyed it. Haven't been a lot of series like this in the past year, I hope 2004 brings similar stuff.

Only annoying thing is that it's one of those OVAs with episodes that are released with intervals of several months.

Other than that, thumbs up! :)

i only watched the first two episodes but i can say this anime has an interesting story its about a family which is something like vampires they need blood or they go crazy. its not like a normal vampire anime i think its more dramatic. the only bad thing is the animation which is sometimes really poor i dont know if its cause of the draw-style or cause of too low budged but well its not so nice.

Perhaps I missed the big picture here, but after 4 OVAs nothing really seemed to develop with this OVA.
HnU is somewhat of an unconventional vampire story about two remaining family members dealin with an illness recieved through their genetic heritage.

The boy discovers he not only craves blood, but that he has a sister who is sick (with the same problem). Then theres the school girl who loves the boy, the doctor who loves the sick girl, and the boys surrogate parents.
There was a great deal of potential in terms of story telling but nothing really happens.

Boy becomes ill with blood cravings, meets sister, moves in, alienates everyone else, and the end. Between the second and fourth OVA, nothing changes aside from the fact that the story ends, and in drab way might I add.

Hitsuji no Uta is just plain stupid. If you are like me, you'll feel as if you wasted a good deal of time. I suggest you find better things to watch.

This anime flows like a stream of conscious directly out of the mind of the main character- an impressive new way of animating a story (the best part is that I can't complain about an abundance of flashbacks, because that's what a story told "from" the mind is). The overall result is a dramatic and terrible look at what vampires might be like in the real world, without magical powers or inexplicably shifting morality. Desperation and the will to live constantly battle a fate worse than death: drinking the blood of those you care about most. The intensity of this dilemma creates a sharp contrast to the pale and listless colors in which this anime is drawn. While monetary problems are obviously limiting this anime the overall impact bests any anime I've seen in at least a year (of course, my hatred of the 2003 shows is extensively documented). Without the skimpy outfits, large breasted idiots and ridiculous mecha-action I think this will be over the head of your average anime fan (despite a few almost incestuous moments) but if you didn't like Popotan, this anime will probably suit you fine.

If you want a really good and through review read Kurai’s.

-

This is an anime, with a strong story and well-crafted characters, is refreshingly absent of mystical powers, giant robots, and other sweeping grandiose plot devices.

The animation is very well done with a strong artistic eye and careful cinematography. Character’s expressions are often subtle and project strong emotions.

However, as is mentioned in other reviews, due to either budget constraints or other reason some animation recycling and other cost saving methods are used.

I have truly enjoyed this series and am eagerly awaiting the next episode.

There isn't much else I can add that hasn't been said about this anime already. It is most indeed a very dark, angsty title ... so if you're looking for something perky and upbeat with a happy ending, this isn't it.

However, if what you're looking for is something more dramatic, with tortured souls facing unimaginable circumstances, then give it a try. I'm willing to bet you won't be disappointed.

I, myself, enjoyed it very much, and really hope it is either picked up for US distribution soon, or someone subs the last half ... because I can't wait to see how it ends.

In a word: stylish. If you like unusual, multilayered, 'artsy' anime, you'll love this. It's also intense; I barely breathed during the first episode. But if you like really flashy animation or lots of fights/hijinks/fan service, you'll hate it, don't bother. I'd have given it all 10s, but held off a bit because it just won't appeal to some people.
