Different from nearly all fantasy/action-related animes these days, this series of short story style anime episodes tells the story of household/daily life drama - from the effects scary housewife gossip to stories about trying to keep a handed down wedding shop alive - through all its hardships and difficulties. Each episode is unrelated to the other, except that they all take place in Japan in some sort of urban house setting. Each episode also ends in somewhat of a positive note despite all the troubles each set of characters face.

What I loved most about Takahashi Rumiko's work here is how poignant and potentially real these fictional stories are. Although it is highly unlikely that such stories would ever be true, the acting and character interactions are so persuasive and believable that it feels as if you were watching a real life drama. Her storytelling style does a good job of establishing a scenario, a set of characters and a dilemma. This is important because it relies on a mere 20 or so minutes in order to carry across her thoughts.

Another aspect I enjoyed was that each episode had a very original dilemma and scenario. While the setting is familiar, the events are presented in a way that have a mixed combination of the supernatural and the real. These events are quite unlikely in its entirety; as a result, the response of those involved manage to become shaped into a sort of drama-like quality that gives off a strong effect on the viewer. Nevertheless, not every episode had such a strong effect on me and sifting through this style of anime may not be to the tastes of many out there who enjoy thrills and action. Therefore, one should know that this series of short stories is most similar to reading teen-fiction stories: it never gets too heavy, but the subject matter deals with possibly real situations.

Overall, whether one enjoys this or not depends on whether one likes the style of storytelling. Things are not really presented in a linear timeline fashion. Instead key points and events are the center of each story, and its rippling effect on the related people are shown and carried out. For example, in one episode we have the scenario of a mid-level worker who is 'promoted' to a managerial position. Although his family is happy for him, they all do not want to move from their life in Tokyo. Thus, the poor husband and father is depressed to have to live alone and regresses into some sort of teenage state while alone. We then watch the resultant effect on the family in a light-hearted manner to a potentially serious and important matter. This storytelling style of optimistic presentation of serious and potentially real matters is what I enjoyed most. While the setting and events were not atypical, the presentation of the story is different (always with a little twist too).

Give it a shot. Try a few episodes, the production quality is nice, art is functional and clean, and direction is well-done. Nevertheless, there isn't anything particular to jump for joy about in this series (i.e., no cute girls, no action scenes, no fancy mecha, etc.). To some, this series of short stories could potentially just be a boring downer set in daily life with little action or driving storyline.

I'm truely enjoys this series. Their randomness doesn't bother at all. All and all I like their variety of crazy plot and their wild fantasies.

The humor and jokes amused me and I keep laughing every ep. I've watched. It doesn't require you to have any japanese knowleage to get their jokes, it's just simply funny and halarius. The story always start with some troublesome question and people seem to have some kind of life thouble of themself. As the ep. go on they come up with something for us to look forward to. It's really intresting to see how the thing turn out, it's not too simple to predict but it's always turn into a nice touching ending.

It's all about family life(most of them) and they were very touching, they're all good people *smile* :D

Rumic World is a cute, if not unspectacular, gallery of 13 animated short stories by Rumiko Takahashi herself. And yes...even here, she still uses the exact same freaking characters. The good part, however, is that in a far more mundane environment these characters actually WORK. Setting is a lot more valuable in this series than in something such as Inuyasha, and everything works out very well with the realistic, grounded feel of the series. Even the comedy is more subtle and clever than her typical fare.

Of course she still holds your hand through significant plot sections, and of course her endings are dodgy and usually inconclusive...this IS Rumiko Takahashi. What the series does do right is create generally tolerable characters within a surprisingly short span, generally amusing situations to put those characters in, and generally well-thought-out ways to take these situations from bad to worse. This structure tends to get a little repetitive, especially the characters themselves: the protagonist is almost always a middle-aged person, usually a woman. The formula, for me, was more fun in the first half of the series, but fortunately Takahashi manages to incorporate just enough twists to keep the series relatively fresh throughout its brief running time.

Rumic World is an enjoyable, light little comedy series to pass some time...perhaps the gap between two more significant series. Charming, fun and almost immediately forgettable.

Each episode is a different storyline, and so far (seen 3, working on the rest) I haven't been disappointed with any of them. Despite being confined to a 22 minute episode, there is full exposition of the characters and plot and still enough time for conclusion.

Most of these are a bit slow, strong on the drama and plot with subtle comedy throughout the story.

this isn't a series as such, more a collection of 13 individual stories. I personally don't like short stories all that much.

this is no exception, but each story was good in thier own respect but it just didnt feel luke a series.

the stories focuses a lot on med life crisis, pets and relationship within the community, some are heart warming, some are not so good.

but the music in this series was extremely impressive, one of the best i've ever heard, each eps. had its own theme which i also very impressed by and all the themes are really fitting to the story and just overall very good music.

charcaters were plenty, there's actually not a hufe variety of characters despite 13 seperate stories, they tend to be quite similar. sometimes the characters in one eps. appears briefly in another eps. to create a sense of community and some conventions of a series.

i dont really think i'll watch this one again, to be honest, the stories were quite inspiring but i was quite bored whilst watching it.

Let's see. Rumic Theater is a series of 13 separate little stories, in case you skipped reading the summary. While some are simply boring and therefore suffer the plot, overall the set becomes one of incredible, extremely realistic people merely living their lives and experiencing what we might in our everyday world.

Magical situations turn out to be .. well, magical... but aside from one or two episodes, a lady has a penguin for a pet, a man mourns his deceased wife, two shops have business troubles...

Simply incredible. I can see how people might be turned off by the stories as they can be rather dry, but I have enjoyed (almost) every one of Rumic Theatre's little tales.

Awesome!!!

Contrast is a key word to describe Rumic Theater. Known for gigantic series like Urusei Yatsura, Ranma 1/2, Maison Ikkoku, and Inu Yasha; Rumiko Takahashi completely surprised me with these one-episode-long short stories. She brings out a side of hers that sparkled on few episodes of some of her big series. Rumic World 2003 reveals the perfect format for her style of writing. Each simple plot is able to tell a great tale and conclude brilliantly in less than 30 minutes. Filled with wonderful characters, we're blessed with great plots and dialogues that depict what feels like a really honest perspective of Japan today. It's almost a cultural travel through some small details of Japanese society.

After watching Rumic Theater, a world without aliens, gender-changing guys, and half-youkais seems even more inspiring than before. Some stories are outstanding. Some just above average. All in all they are all really good.

A fascinating series. You can't particularly judge the series on one ep since they're all very much different, but each will give you an ecstatic feel. I've only seen upto episode 7 and was quite pleased with each of them. The story relates to reality (can get a bit exaggerated at times), but is still excellent overall.

this is a VERY well made series. although each episode contains a entirely different story, each is so fully developed in the extremely short time that a whole anime series could be made based on each episode. there is so much emotion packed into each story also. think of hoshi no koe style episodes. the characters are made realistically and you become attached to them even after the short 20 minutes or so. each episode also has a message that the author, takahashi rumiko tries to tell the audience about life. i definately recommend this series for everyone.
