| (Anime Kraze fansub. Excellent translation with many cultural notes)
At last a decent anime horror title. Though at this age and after countless horror movies and thrillers I hardly expected to get thrilled by watching 100 Stories.
But during the first 6 episodes and in the last 2 it created an atmosphere I liked a lot.
First this title is very violent. It doesnt belong to the subtle horror genre movies but uses mostly very violent scenes and themes. The last episode reminded me of the thriller ''Hostel''. Though all this violence that impresses the viewer visually hides the gaps in direction and story that are blatant most of the times.
Fortunately the 3 main characters are very well designed and the voice actors did a superb job. Except for the author: he acts some times so hysterically that I wished he would die from the first episode and leave the others perform their work without his presence.
The story is based on a novel and was left unfinished on purpose since the novelist had already planned a second novel and probably there most of the questions will be answered. So in the final episode I was dissapointed for the abrupt ending. If a second season is planned I'd be eager to watch it. I found the first 6 episodes interesting.
Overall it is a good character-driven series but except the visuals I didnt find most of the other characters appealing. Probably had to do with the visual style that is very static but impressive nevertheless, just like reading a horror comic book. But characters also need sufficient animation. Or else it would be better drawing a manga instead of producing an anime. It succeeds in the nightmarish atmosphere but only in that.
The OP and ED animations were impressive if only they were accompanied by a better song. The songs were awful and I listened only because of the animation. The rest of the BGM was atmospheric and appropriately used.
Now the final verdict:
A must watch for those who like horror movies and anime. But if horror means something more than violence, gore and the non-conformist side of human nature then there are better titles, like Vampire Miyu OVA and Ayakashi.
If I remember there was also a very old anime series from the 70's that dealt with horror stories and I watched it when I was 5 year old. This was of course my favorite horror anime series

| Requiem From the Darkness, turned out to be a fairly decent show. It may not of totally lived up to my expectations, however it has some interesting animation, to go along with some cool action sequences. If you want to know more about this decent show read on.

| RFTD is a very dood series. The animation is quite unique and I thought it looked really good. The sub was very well done, all the japanese voice actors did a good job. But I didnt like the the opening and ending themes very much. The characters were pretty well developed although some backstory wouldve helped a bit. You never completely find out why theyre doing waht theyre doing. The series is episodic but each episode is very enjoyable. So there isnt much of an overall story and each episode is full of alot of details. One thing I liked about it was that the series is very dark and creepy.

| I was disapointed by 100 stories. When I set about looking at reveiws it seemed like something I would rather enjoy. However I did not enjoy it very much at all.
The animation was different to any other I have seen before, and the style seems to jump between two or three different styles. Mostly I found the animation was different and rather good. In this way the begining seemed promising.
The sound effects and music where pretty average, not bad but not outstanding.
What sadened me about this anime was its potential. It had a really really good idea behind it. But tis my opinion that they didn't manage to pull it off very well at all. Also it doesn't really go anywhere untill the last episodes. Which would be fine if they had made the story a little better. At points it was idfficult to understand what was going on (but maybe that was because my sub titles were below average).
The characters started off really interesting and mysterious. The problem was they also ended mysterious, and you learned little about them.
This anime was all right i guess, but its not anything I'd watch again.

| Story: 10
100 Stories sets out to explore and find a solution to human evil and the living hell it can create. This is an ambitious goal at which 100 Stories succeeds, albeit bitter-sweetly. I admire a series that can build upon a difficult premise and make it real for the viewer. 100 Stories succeeds in this, down to the very last episode, where otherwise wonderful series like Evangelion and Berserk punt and end up in self-indulgent weirdness for weirdness's sake. Granted, there is more weirdness and ugliness in 100 Stories than in Berserk, but 100 Stories is well-structured, and ultimately reaches a logical and successful resolution. This is a superb series that gives the viewer a lot to chew on about human nature and the task confronting those who wish to live rightly in an oftimes ugly world. 100 Stories does this without being at all preachy or saccharin. The story line is at least as old as Confucius, but the fact that it's successfully interpreted in contemporary drawing styles, with superb voice acting and interesting music, make it a "keeper" -- a definitely high-quality production.
Value: 10
There's a load of cultural information in the series. One of the things that enriches 100 Stories is its attention to detail, both as part of the main story line and as "little things" the characters do and say. For example, and this is so insignificant that it's definitely not a spoiler, in one of the episodes, one of the main characters weaves a sasabune and sets it afloat. Apparently, this is a traditonal thing that kids in Japan do on outings and so forth. The scene in question mixes comforting imagery with the notion of fate, as the little sasabune floats away over the horizon. I learned a lot about Japanese culture from this series.
As I mentioned above, I will most definitely re-watch 100 Stories from start to finish. Ani-Kraze's translation and fansubbing is really great. They did a wonderful job of explaining the various types of ghosts and demons, and their unique evil qualities. This series is one of the best I've ever seen.
Character: 10
Superbly-matched voice acting and well-rounded characters. Having just finished the series, I find myself missing the main characters, which is a good sign. They are well-developed and believable.
Sound: 9
Great opening and ending blues-ey themes contribute to the sick sense of decadence built up episode after episode. Incidental leitmotifs are simple, memorable, and well-done. Good sound-effects. Nothing is overdone. I discuss voice acting in my Character Review, but will also mention it here: it is superb. Mataichi, Chouji, and Ogin have *GREAT* voices -- highly individual, well suited to the characters, and wonderful to the ear. The voices fit so well that you don't notice them, except when you find yourself missing (for example) Mataichi's voice. Mataichi's voice is the best, although each person will probably have their own favorite :)
Animation: 9
Very very well-drawn. Contemporary-looking hand-drawn scenery features exaggerated perspective, weird "camera" angles, and high-contrast shadows. This contributes to the feeling of unease and harsh reality built up episode by episode. The main and supporting characters are carefully done in typical anime style, with the "cast of thousands" drawn frequently with only spheres or cylinders for heads. This simplified drawing technique contributes to the idea of a dehumanized mob, which is part of the overall theme of the series. Excellent combination of drawing styles. Some of the computer graphics used to depict splashing waves is distractingly badly done, which is why the animation gets a 9 instead of a 10.
Enjoyment: 10
Although frequently ugly and disquieting, I enjoyed the depth of 100 Stories immensely. I will definitely watch it again, from start to finish. Just a word of advice, 100 Stories isn't pretty. It presents a black pit, and a way out of the pit. You might want to have an "antidote anime" on hand to watch afterwards, such as Kimagure Orange Road, or Naruto, something light and upbeat.

| This was a show that I watched a little of, liked it a bit, but then put it aside for something else and eventually forgot about. However, being that I'm really into Japanese folk tales I wanted to give it another try. I enjoyed it much more the second time around and it definitely gave me my share of Japanese folk tales.

| This anime was an interesting concept that could have been implemented in a much more entertaining way. 100 Stories lacked a lot, espically the ending, which went from plot development to "and he published the book of 100 stories." Very much anti-climatic.
This anime definatly wasn't worth the time to watch it.

| I would like to say 100 Stories is a great series. It has some of the most innovative animation I've seen recently. The distorted style is perfect in creating an atmosphere of horror. The stories are full pain and anguish adding to the feeling.
Great setup but something is wrong. Maybe the stories are simply too painful. I was hard to watch the episodes especially more than one at a time. Plots are not quite straight-forward and require some puzzling out. Luckily the series offers explanations at the end of episodes.
The characters were fine too. Only thing I wished for was that Mataichi's and Chouji's background were made clearer. This was done with Ogin but not with the other two. Hyakusuke was good as a naive story gatherer.
Objectively speaking I have to say 100 Stories is a great series. Personally it's not. The story-telling is too twisted for me to enjoy it 100%. Also I think the animation is amazing (well, some of the CGI looked poor but it's not a big issue). But it's very weird and unconservative too, so it's up to your personal taste whether you love it or not. Same as with Gankutsuou.

| This modern retro-style anime is more than meets the eye, however from this era it also brings back its share of flaws.
The animation is indeed quite unique as i've never seen the type of graphics and backdrops from the retro spiderman & rocket robin hood appear in a japanese anime before. The constrasts are extreme with hand drawn structures and vivid colors. After a couple of episodes, it becomes tiresome. Although it creates a palpable atmosphere, there are many limits to such technic. This is why you will find a mix of animation technics in 100 Stories which are not always well balanced enough and this is what annoyed me the most. For example, all side characters were always drawn like snowmen or scarecrows. In constrast with the main characters, this made the overall effect look cheap. If some kind of feeling had to be created by this choice, i didn't get it.
On the good side of things, i found the storyline, although quite linear, to be captivating. 100 Stories is in truth a collection of horror stories. From ghosts, to cannibals you will find some interresting references to various japanese legends in almost every episodes. Don't get me wrong, this is not an horror-thriller type. Nothing will get you jumping in this anime, although somtimes quite disgusting and violent.
The only problem with the storyline is its abrupt ending. The end is good, but somehow after listening to the last episode i was left with the impression that some part of the main character's book was missing.
Overall, i would recommend renting 100 Stories. People who are interrested in collecting various animation styles might be interrested in buying it.

| After having read some of the other reviews, I thought I would give my 2 cents.
As others have mentioned, the animation in this anime is exceptionally unique. It may seem crappy at first but soon you will realise that the style suits the dark/gritty theme perfectly. Not only is the animation weird, but even the camera angles used are quite strange - two thumbs up to the director of this anime.
One important point I'd like to elicit, which others seem to have ignored. Did ya guys notice how the "normal" characters are displayed in this anime? I mean, ya know... those stock characters, like... village folk, henchmen, guards... they are all drawn in a funny way - as if to show that they arent important in the story. A nice touch if ya ask me
This anime is just 13 eps, so, its well worth your time. I really liked the trio, especially Mataichi - I think Mataichi is my new favoutie "wise ol man" character now :P
Overall, fun anime. Watch it.. if you can find it that is.

| This series completely surprised me. From the very beginning, before I started watching it, I assumed something with the name like "Hundred Stories" would be a long, episodic mish-mash of different short stories. What a shock that was. In fact, this is probably one of the most unique animes I've seen to date.
The animation is one of the most unique things. Since this is basically a "horror" anime, you can expect a lot of dark tones. Still, it was more than that. If I could compare it to something, it would be the inverse of King of Bandit Jing. Instead of being drawn on a very bright screen, it seems to be drawn on a very dark screen. Not only that, but a few colors are still very vibrant, especially the red of blood. Everything was uniquely drawn, and many of the character designs were different. Partly realistic looking, partly cartoonish, partly… dreamscape. I really can’t think of anything else to compare this to.
The sound was equally good, but not in a unique way. Its just the sound quality is very stirring. Watching this anime with the sound up, 5.1, and sitting in a dark room is VERY spooky. No voices were annoying, and the sounds were crisp they needed to be.
The story is where it gets wonderful, scary, confusing, intriguing, all wrapped up in a unique little package. This certainly isn’t Care Bears… it’s a very dark storyline showing the evil and frailty of human’s hearts and minds. The coolest thing about this anime is that just about every episode consists of three plots: 1) Being the superstition/supernatural and mysterious occurrence (such as a tree killing a man's wives out of jealousy, or floating heads). 2) Is the *true* story to that superstition/supernatural happening (usually involving murder). 3) Is the overall plot of the Maitichi gang… how they react to the story, to each other, and how they deal out judgment and justice. It seems fairly episodic because 2/3 of the story is new every episode. Still, at the same time the character development and interaction in that last 1/3 keeps it connected well until we hit close to the end, where that last third becomes the main focus (not with character development, but dealing with Maitichi’s gang). If I would have to pick a theme of this anime, its “right to life, something that the main character Yamaoka preaches. Sure, the gang runs around dealing judgment and death to each murderer…but in turn isn’t the gang murderers themselves?
That question is answered in how each of the gang members approaches each case. From my point of view, Yamaoka’s approach is to “save the soul of the antagonist, as well as figure out the actual truth (he’s the only one that doesn’t know the real truth behind each case.) Obviously, figuring out the truth is what he needs for the 100 stories that he plans to write. The rest of the gang members are not AS well developed; especially the boss of the gang who works behind the scenes (and is important later). Maitichi is the one who deals out the final judgment, and Ogin and Chouji use their tricking abilities to set up the antagonist physically and psychologically for their demise. They could just walk in and kill the bad guy, but they first make him repay and relive the terror he/she has brought upon others… and partly why this anime is so well done.
Overall, I don’t think I’d watch this series again, despite the quality. It's one of those shows that you are satisfied to the fullest the first time, and repeating it would be too much. Also, one thing killed the value for me… do NOT watch these back to back. It would be better to watch maybe two a day... and when you watch them, be sure to do it at night, in the dark, and preferably right before you go to bed. Trust me… the effect is MUCH, much more enjoyable.

| This is an interesting anime, if you aren't in to horror types, you most likely won't enjoy it. I happen to like it, the episodes were interesting and twisted. There is only a thread of a main storyline but the characters are mysterious and pretty cool so the vagueness of the plot doesn't really detract from the anime. It takes a bit of time to adjust to the funky animation style, but i found it a nice change. If you don't like it after the first 2 or 3 episodes you probably won't enjoy the rest of the series.
I didn't find it terribly thought provoking, which I think was something they were going for. But I enjoyed all the stories.
The ending was a bit rushed, but overall I can't complain.

| Watching this was weird. I respect the originality of the concept. Just letting yourself go with the flow for a while makes this easier to appreciate. The trio that compose this abstract tale are guite intriguing. The chick in particular is quite - 'persuasive', shall we say. Anything about Eastern style ghost stories beats the hell out of the Western versions.
Will continue this one with interest. Even if just to see whether Mr. Novelist retains his sanity and what Ms. Persuasive gets up to.

| This is one really strange and wierd anime.... yet it managed to grab hold of my interest and pulled me into the strange world that was portrayed in the show. You may complain about the drawing style, but i love it! it's a little raw and it gives the show a gritty edge which is suited to its dark theme. The characters although dark and evil looking, leaves an endearing presence as well as a deep impression in me. The blood and gore, the violence and the twisted minds of the characters are very unique and makes you think if we humans are actually capable of such cruelty. It touches topics on the different sins like the movie Seven, but not all of it though. Throughly engaging and leaves you feeling a little strange but it's one of the best horror themed anime i've seen to date.
The Deed is Done.

| This might be one of the most one-of-a-kind animes ive seen to date. One hell of a unique story, strange and bizzare characters, an almost low budget animation that works perfectly for the style of the show. Hundred Stories shows us the gross, sick, twisted, and darker sides of humanity that rarley get brought up nowadays. Very cool.

| This has to be one of the most original anime series I've ever seen. Hundred Stories is about a young author in feudal japan collecting ghost stories, who falls in with a very spooky trio. They find the truth behind many of the supernatural occurences, and often engineer a form of justice for those involved.
This is NOT a kid friendly show. In the course of investigating these events, what is usually revealed is the dark side of human nature; murder, torture, and evil, usually in more graphic detail than you would expect on tv. But it is this acknowledgement of human nature, and the protagonist's growing understanding of it, that give the show its strength.
The animation is definitely unusual; typical animation is mixed with distortions, cg and cut scenes for a freakish atmosphere. It doesn't always work, but most of the time it does enhance the story, and give them credit for being original. The background music is great, though I thought the OP and End was only okay.
Overall, this is a great anime, strongly recommended.

| I originally downloaded this anime on a whim, where it sat on my hard drive for over a month before I opened it to look at it.
My first thought watching it : "what the heck *is* this crap?".
Then whatever powerful subliminals have been embedded in it took control of my brain and I fell in love. It's really great once you get into it.
It's a horror, so don't watch this expecting happy schoolgirls or bishounen battle scenes.

| great stories with truly awesome unique style. the Chinese water-ink painting art style is very well done and suits the overall atmopsphere of the anime perfectly. The story focus on the darker side of humanity, how the dark desires and ambitions turning normal people into monsters and demons. Quite some thought-provoking stuff in each episodes. My favorite is episode 7 where it shows how all those beautiful women become grotesque corpse after death. It's one of the few anime that dare to reveal the darker truth of our world. One of the best anime series in recent time.
