| Props to this anime for originality, energy, and a good fusion of mecha action and character interactions. What a silly mecha anime. By default, Godannar wont be able to become anything amazing because of its choice of story, but for temporary entertainment it has got it all and it does it well - flashy fights, fast paced action, catchy theme music, colorful mechas, big boobs in tight uniforms bouncing around after each explosion, characters that scream out their moves, and to repeat it again SUPER FLASHY.
I was pretty impressed with the storyline in Godannar. To be honest, I wasn't expecting anything meaningful from this at first, but there was a lot of plot twists that appeared at various point along the way that made me open my mouth in shock. But still, the mjaority of this plot was pretty standard. It's just how energetic and fast paced everything felt that carried me away.
Most of the characters are pretty forgettable and can be easily summarized in one sentence. Anna is loud and never gives up, Go makes a lot of mistakes and is haunted by his past, Shizuru is someone who initially has trouble expressing herself and may come off as cold, but is good hearted. All the character interactions in this anime are overly dramatic but hey, why not? At least they're pretty entertaining.
The aspect I loved MOST out of this series was that there's a good balance between mecha action and character interactions. None of this crappy one episode, one mindless monster crap (which would soon be forgotten) where a certain few minutes of the episode is entirely devoted to some pointless fight. Instead, fights actually further some aspect of the story or character development or at least they are integrated quite well into the event progression.
Despite the number of plot twists it has, Godannar is not a very serious anime except for the final last moment few episodes. Overall, it is full of flashy entertainment and various laughs for those who love robot animes. The drama and love relationships are pretty well thought out, and make the mecha fights more engrossing. However, I wouldn't haphazardly recommend this to just anyone. Most people would definitely wave this off as being too immature or ridiculous, but if you have time to kill and want to see mecha fights with a little drama, lots of enthusiasm, and energy to the max this is it!

| Hmm, not as bad as I thought it might be. I got the first 2 dvd's for christmas, and I remained a bit skeptical at first since the name itself wasn't familiar to me and the opening theme song was simply god aweful. After awhile though it began to pull me in with it's semi likable characters and simple yet enjoyable plot.
If your looking for something to match up with Evangelion or Gundam Seed then this probably won't impress you that much, but it's still worth the watch if your just looking for some action and fun.
There is plenty of fanservice (without overdoing it, like Kiddy Grade >.>) as well as a few echii moments that draw your attention in and some good humour too.
The characters and plot don't pack the same emotional punch as other mecha anime's out there, but the anime still manages to pull an impressive show. Worth your while to rent it, maybe not to buy.

| I just noticed that there is a seperate entry for the second season. Rather than split the review in two, the whole series is addressed below. Now resuming normal broadcast:
It was a close call that I didn't watch more than one episode of Godannar. But then I thought it had an opening full of fighting spirit, tons of fan-service and hot mecha fights. After that I wasn't sure if there was any reason _not_ to watch it.
From the first seconds on Godannar is what Godannar does. An old-fashioned mecha series brought to modern day. Mecha is a robot and every attack requires you to yell its name. There's not much to say about the plot. It goes pretty straight-forward way with bashing enemies until the series ends. You got your mysterious enemy trying to overrun the population, mecha pilot ace, some other mecha pilots, wacky mechanics and bunch of mechas (robots) with different capabilities and a merging function. Sounds pretty boring but...
...it's far from it. Godannar plunges into this soup with such passion that an iron chef would be jealous. So it's a mecha series, teenage guys will watch it: every woman should have humongous pair of breasts and as little clothing as possible. The mechas merge: let's make it as sexual as possible. Oh, and let's have three gorgeous babes fighting over the main (male) character. Enough to make any hetero-sexual male teenager (and some adults) steaming from his ears.
It sounds a lot like guys only series but surprisingly enough, these girls aren't actually doormats. They aren't waiting around for Go to rescue them but go head on to fights. It's also amazing has strong they build these characters from under the tons of clichés. Go tries to balance wonderfully between Anna and Milla. Even if their actions are predictable I was still feeling full for them. When Anna crashes under pressure and runs away and her watching how Milla seemingly better than her in every way gets closer with Go, great. With side characters Godannar is even better. Mecha pilots from other countries generally get one episode where they are the main-stars but that was quite enough to define them and to make me care about them. Next time they were on, I looked at them with very different eyes. The crew of Dannar base on the other hand gets little exposure all the time and slowly I noticed I cared about how their romances and worries went on. This series wouldn't work without an extremely strong cast and it sure hits the jackpot there.
Did I mention the fights? Cool as mecha fights can be, they have the energy to blow up the stars. It may sound ridiculous to yell "SOUL BREAKER!" when you finish your enemy but it fits the mood of the series so well that with all my fist clinching and grinning I didn't even notice it. The animation is smooth and character designs very appealing mix of old fashion and new trends. The opening and ending songs are incredibly catchy with the old mecha song feeling and the music during the series doesn't lose much to that.
Godannar knows exactly what it is and it knows how to use it right. Balancing with parody, humor, romance, drama and action it manages to be entertaining to the max and even a touching series. Eye candy is plentiful and much more appreciated then in Divergence Eve since this is a semi-serious series, not totally serious. It's hard to explain why this Godannar works, it just does and you have to see it yourself to know how. Every mecha fan, who doesn't take the genre too seriously, should be thrilled to see this one. I know it isn't a classical masterpiece but it's just so damn entertaining (just like Cutie Honey) that it's impossible to give it a bad score.

| One of my favorite anime. This show is everything people love about super robot shows. Guys screaming out attack names when the enemy clearly doesn't speak human language, loads of echii fanservice without turning into green green, and most of all, a great cast of characters.
Read individual fields.

| A truly well done 80's super robot tribute anime. It knows when to be funny, when to be serious, and when to just plain be fun. It walks the fine line between being too much of any one thing, and benefits all the more from it. The only real beef I have with the series is it didn't really answer any of the questions it raised in season one, but season two is coming out, so theymay be answered there.

| Sometimes its good just to have a fun show without needing a complex storyline that you will never understand. This is one of those shows. Tons of cute girls, tons of mecha action and never a dull moment. Some of it is a bit cheesy but I still found myself smiling or even feeling for the characters in the melodramatic moments.
Actually, the story has alot of underlying twists if you look deeper. It stands out especially once you get to the 13th episode and look back at all the hints they dropped about how people actually managed to stay alive and their connection to Mimesis. Season 2 should be interesting.
I also found it much more enjoyable than the other recent retro-mecha show, Gravion.

| Only seen up to episode 9 so far so its hard to get a real reflection of the series, but so far its been pretty damn good.
The animation is fluid, a nice marriage of cel anime and CG work, the mech battles are OTT (just the way i like em ^_^). The story is a nie light hearted romp along kind of reminiscent of Nadesico in places. Its a little on the ecchi side in places ^_~ but not so much as to put you off. There's a broad range of characters as well, (I'm looking forward to Koji getting back in the thick of things).
You could do a lot worse than check this out in my opinion, especially if you like flambouyant character and mecha design in your anime ^_^

| I've yet to complete this series, but I have seen the first 10 episodes, and since it's not due to finish any time soon, I figure I'd offer my two cents.
This is another of those stylish retro anime, although it has a lot more modern elements than GaoGaiGar or the new Mazinkizer. I'll warn you up front, although the fan-service in this series is tasteful, it is among the most mouth watering, tantalizing you will ever see. Girls pulling cell phones out from their boobs, or carrying their cat around in their boobs. Panty shots extraordinairre. Boobs wagging and jiggling during mecha battles.
But there is so much else in this show, really! A wonderful score...fun characters...exciting battles, this show will not disappoint you with its amazing action sequences. The mecha are excellent, and the male-female mecha transformations are tasteful and eloquent. Most episodes are useful in setting up the story, and we see a lot of character development (and not just in the chest region). Once we are familiar with the past of all these intertwined characters, the show starts to take off.
What can accurately I compare this to? A light hearted Evangelion with a lot of retro-mecha flair and fan-service. It's a good time, and I'll certainly continue to watch the episodes as they are fansubbed.

| Hmmm........ this sure brings back memories.
Well, basically, Godannar is a parody - utilizing super classic giant robo merging action kinda theme with almost everything, even the kitchen sink thrown in.
And what it has in its arsenals are high quality animation & design, fast pace action, descent storyline, fun laughter plus super fanservice as a bonus (some of ppl might not like it ;).
It might not intended for everyone but if u enjoy good action and want to see lots of thing that been missing from the oldskool merge robo anime (go and find it out urself), U got it in Godannar...
Just remember, generally, this anime is a PARODY, so the Character design look sooo.. oldskool!
*ACHTUNG!* Huge Breast Ahead!

| I'll make this simple... The 'male' robot is called "Dannar". A husband is called a "Dannasama". The 'female' robot is "Okusauer". A wife is called "Okusan". The two pilots are married. The two robots combine to make the perfect union fighting maching. There's alot of fanservice, and the art style is identical to Gundam Seed. (that's why it gets a decent score). Seriously people... it's a wedding story with T&A. Not that i'm complaining, mind you....

| Ah nothing like a going back to those classic kiddies mecha animes, only...this is for "mature" kiddies. ^_^
Its a no nonsense big robot vs monsters in the traditional Japanese style.
Thought they try to add alittle bit more seriousness and mix it with comedic moments, you can't help but grin thought the entire show. It's just a fun fun series to watch, everything is pretty much clean unless you have a low tolerance for bouncing top-heavy anime babes, damage to your mental health should be minimum. ^_~
All I have to say to those who love comedy and mecha:
Makkana plasma ima, gareki no tsuchi ni tatsu
Unaru kyotai kami no keshin
Seinaru na wa Go! Godannar!
Oo, eien no heiwa wo chigiriai
Oo, mi mo kokoro mo kansanete
Hagane no kende bang! Bang!
Jaakuna tekiwo gan ga gan!
Tamashi kome Full Power de,
Ga-Gan! Ga-Gan! Ga-Gan!
Hanou wo agete ban ban!
Hearto breaker ga gan ga gan!
Ozoke furuu konoyo no yam, ah, yakitsukusu made
Ai ni junjiyou....
SHINKON GATTAI GO! GO! GO! GODANNAR!
GODANNAR!
GODANNAR!
[Translation]
Red plasma,standing amidst the ruins
A roaring machine, the incarnation of god
Its holy name is Go! Godannar!
Oh, swearing an eternal peace,
Oh, putting heart & soul together,
With a sword of steel, Bang! Bang!
An evil enemy, Bang! Ba-Bang!
With my soul, in full power,
Ba-Bang! Ba-Bang! Ba-Bang!
Burn them up, Bang! Bang!
With a heart breaker, Bang! ba-bang!
Until the horrifying darkness of this world is burned away.
I will sacrifice myself for love....
GOD SOUL MERGED GO! GO! GO! GODANNAR!
GODANNAR!

| I'm not supposed to be taking this anime series seriously am I? I mean, I've been laughing throughout all the eps I've watched so far. It's a total throwback to old 70's and 80's Stereotypical Mecha Hero cartoon/anime... And these days with the highly intellectual anime that comes out I think about the shows I used to watch as a kid and laugh.
I mean... the old shows we used to watch where if the nigh-invincible hero was somehow unable to defeat the gigantic world-threatening monster, he need only scream really loud and collide with it in some spectacularly amazing new way, and we all cheer.
I've been thinking it's just a really clever parody on old mecha shows by not making fun of them or over exaggerating, but by just sticking true to the old ways. hehe... the corny old ways.
Then there's of course the large, spine-snapping, hypnotically-jiggling, humongo-breasts... and skin tight revealing outfits... but that's a whole other matter.
Particularly with the ending song lyrics, I get an overall sense of being told: "Stop laughing! It's not funny!" as I continue to laugh my ass off.

| Kick out the old review that i wrote 356 days ago which got 8.5 & in with the new (now seen the rest of the series!).
Im going to review both seasons here because i dont think splitting my reveiws is going to help anyone!
Animation. Top class animation that has both beautiful art, fluid action, creative looking characters & is overall kickass, colourful goodness (although "black" can be good too!). Very good use of computer enhanced effects & even changes in the transformation scenes. 9 out of 10 is clearly deserved (10 out of 10 if you like busty russian chicks with orange hair & green eyes in a purple outfit eww!) please note that the booby physics is tremendous, emotions & chracter attitudes are also shown outstandingly through the animation!.
Sound. Top sound, great background music & ending/opening. You want it to have 10/10 but some people dont like (me being one of them) BG action music with words because it can get repetitive. But this time even i like it because its done that damm well! (9 -1 because of the word thing). Voices etc, are top notch!
Story. Very engaging story throughout with a slightly episodic introductory start, Thrilling ending! (which builds on everything in-between). Shame it had to build up a cliff hanger at the end of the 1st half because there is (apparently) a series break at episode 13? which had to be adressed by a review episode 14... bound to leave some people wondering why that IS in there & adv is bound to take advantage of it to try to nab more money out of everybodys hands! Cant remember almost a year ago so the 1/4 mark is fuzzy but the 3/4 mark kicks-ass! (9 because of the season split).
Characters, diverse, comical, pretty, fitting. They develop throughout.
detailed relationships & very good mech designs. Maby people wont like the... um... (10).
Value. I need a girl to watch this, so for now im marking it down for the fanservice. (so 9). To note im never buying this series because adv licensed it. Otherwise i would have bought it the day it comes out! (it might deserve 10, i have allready watched it a few times & cant wait to show it off & watch it again!).
Enjoyment. Maby im shocked because it my first propper "super robot show" but its even throughly enjoyable if you dont enjoy the "super robot genre" (me little over a year ago!) Watching it as soon as i got it makes me think it deserves (10). (oh yeah the story 1/4 mark i looked up, its great aswell!)

| This anime is NOT intended for kids!! Those hugely breasted heroines are just too much for people with heart problems :) Boys might like them see how those unrealistic breasts move up and down in every second of the episodes, however girls might get rather irritated and offended, hahah (envy?). Anyways, I find Godannar a rather poor anime without a good characterization and plot even though the animation quality is high thumbs.
Eh... what´s wrong with the main titles song? It reminds me of Mazinger´s 70´s song, yucks-!

| This series rocks. after 13 eps (Season 1), the story is still a bit confusing
but makes a bit more sense now. char's die, come back... hasn't explained that yet but still cool. as for char's comming back, Koji better get his ass out of the hospital soon, Go's stealing all the battle glory! lol.
not to mention, Okauser's moves... holy crap, look at her go! Somone's been watching DBZ again... lol.
if I havent said it yet, Go download this series, its very good.
original review from way back around ep 4:
After the first 4 episodes...
A return to 70's anime and funny as hell! AonE & Infusion are doing a great job sofar!
My only problem is with the translation of the ending theme, it makes no sense for example, "...Let's have our eyes gouged with bloodied fingers..."
my response: WTF?!
The opening theme is really good, and an english ver of the song would probably be rather funny considering some of the subbed lyrics.

| As a fan of the Heroic Tragedy School of Mecha anime, this anime does me very well.
Between the reliably kinetic action sequences, Classic Mecha-anime panache, and interesting characters (some more than others) I will continue to hunt down this series.
Here's hoping that someone subtitles it.
