| Maria-sama is an anime that feels entirely different from 'normal' anime. I think the reason for this is that the anime is completely based in reality. There are no ghosts, girls with blue hair, stupid ecchi harem comedy or mechas running around. The anime is about a Catholic girls school in Japan that has a rigid hierarchy, with older girls becoming 'sisters' with younger girls by taking them under their wing to train them how to become proper and elegant young ladies. Maria-sama explores the relationships between three sets of these relationships.
The question is, does this entirely realistic approach to anime work? The answer is an overwhelming yes. As other reviewers have stated, this anime is elegant. The actions of the characters, the muted color pallet, the character designs, all speak of an elegance and refinement not often seen in anime. However, what actually makes this anime so compelling is the depth of the characters and their relationships. The level of respect that almost approaches worship that the younger girls show their older 'sisters' is both eerily creepy and fascinating. Watching the relationships unfold between these pairs of girls and learning about their inner struggles that are hidden in their calm exteriors was amazing.
Don't expect much of a plot from Maria-sama because it is entirely character driven. However, it is nonetheless a fascinating and a pleasant departure from the standard anime fare. This is highly recommended because it is eerily captivating.

| Mariamite is incredibly cultivated: classical music, minimalist drawing, sober color palette and a character-driven story without any bad guys. If you're getting tired of mecha, gratuitous panty shots etc., this might just be what you're looking for.
Although Marimite is listed under Yuri, it is much more subtler than the majority of today's production. In fact, it contains only one "serious" scene (but it's a really unforgettable one). So don't expect any hot girl-on-girl action. Maria-sama ga Miteru is just too cultivated for that.

| I really enjoyed this anime, personally. Not only is this anime a departure from the more traditional animes (as it doesn't really have a plot), but it has amazing character development as well. In my case, I finished this series and wanted more, so I'm on the second season now.
This anime was superb in the fact that it took a new approach (all-girls catholic school), and attempted to delve into the lives of schoolgirls who don't get to see testosterone until the weekend. I enjoyed the music, personally (I'm into rock, but you've got to have some mellow stuff from time to time), and I felt that I really grew with the characters.
I wasn't so hot about the animation though. Yumi's eyes look a little too big for her head (which weirded me out), and I think that the series would have been better if ALL of the characters had the dramatic emotions that Yumi had. Nonetheless, this is an anime that should leave anyone a little impacted.

| Maria-sama ga Miteru is a character-driven anime centered on the 'soeur' relationships at Lilian High School. This shoujo drama uses classical music, a religious setting, and the use of French themes to create an elegant feeling upon seeing the environment of the Lilian High School. And like Revolutionary Girl Utena, the anime has sexual implications with the elegant feeling as we get the implication of shoujo-ai relationships in some of the soeur relationships. The clash of religious and sexual symbolism is likely to turn off conservative viewers when they see this anime.
In terms of animation, it looks above average. The character designs looked plain, but the artwork of the Lilian High School's elegant setting was a sight to behold, esprcially the sight of seeing a Virgin Mary statue just outside the school. Hearing the classical music of Bach's "Ave Maria" added to the elegant feel of Maria-sama ga Miteru.
Despite Maria-sama's elegant look and character-driven storyline, I didn't get too much enjoyment out of it unfortunately. The 'soeur' system was confusing for me to understand with all the French (I haven't learned French since I was in fifth grade) as I had to browse around several fan sites just to comprehend the French. Plus, I felt that moments of humor were mostly dry and I couldn't get too much of a chuckle, unless there were scenes of Sei flirting with Yumi to get her flustered.
Overall, I did like the elegance of Maria-sama ga Miteru. Maybe I just had too high expectations for this anime which made me not enjoy it as much as I wanted. But if you have been a fan of classy anime like Utena or Rose of Versailles, then maybe you'll like this title more than I did.

| Ah~~ All girls high school gotta give you that feeling yes that feeling. The feeling of wind blowing through the shiny long healthy hair. The feeling of femine in the air, the leaves falling around our maiden while they walk holding each others hand. Yes that warm fezzy feeling is what i'm talking about.
Maria-sama doesn't have many shoujo-ai(girl-girl love) scenes. I only saw 1 ep. so far that have one serious kiss. Usually these girls just admire each other a lot because of the some girls are just too elegrant or too beautiful to be girl.. u know.. elite girls. When they are together, you will see a strong bond of relationship. It's like when men compete in sport.
Really nice series, I like it and I'm sure you'll like no matter what gender you are.

| I'm amazed. Not only by Marimite, but also by the fact that I haven't reviewed it yet. It's one of those rare rare gems that you hear rumors about but never really takes the initiative to watch.
And watch it you should.
I dont really know how to start describing marimite, it's... unique. It's not fast paced, it doesn't really bring up important issues, it's not funny for the first time viewers who aren't into this kind of series.
But it's the feeling, how people meet, how people gets to know eachother. It's like those moments in a love story before the two characters get together all throughout the show.
It's like a utopia showing the bright sides of life, even through rough times and sorrow it shows the light. In a way Maria-sama ga Miteru represents one thing and one thing only to me; hope.
It doesn't focus on anything irrelevant, just the characters and how they affect the school. It might bore some people but personally I loved that part. The characters interacting with such emotions, how symbols and items have such emotional value to them. It makes you treasure the things you've got and struggle for things you want.
You can really tell that this anime is based on a japanese novel. It's got a very female touch to it and is probably better suited for girls who can relate more to the characters. Nevertheless I as a guy really enjoyed the show.
I feel that I've got so much more to say, but cant really formulate those thought right now. But I do recommend this to anyone who doesn't want lots of action or humour. It's drama, though not dramatic. It's romantic, though it's not a real romance.
Enjoy

| I was recommended to watch MariMite because I loved Oniisama E.... I was a tad disappointed within the first viewing of the 13 episodes. Because there aren't too many episodes, the pace of the story goes quickly, making it difficult (at least for me) to understand and take in all at once. Having fewer episodes also makes it difficult for stronger character development, especially when certain episodes are devoted to characters who aren't key to the series. Still, I began to enjoy the series when I watched the show more than once, and that probably had to do with being able to comprehend the overall gist of the series. I still wish that there was more character development, but as mentioned previously, there are only 13 episodes. I wouldn't consider this an anime classic but definitely worth a watch.

| This is a memorable story about girls in a Catholic all-girls school. The plot is episodic, although there is some overall development. Yumi, for example, grows up somewhat; Sachiko becomes much less cold and self-centered. But nothing really exciting happens. On the other hand, it's a nice experience to get to know the characters as they progress through a semester in school.
I take issue with some previous reviewers' reading of this as some sort of glorification of lesbianism. OK, there are two girl-to-girl kisses in the 13 episodes, but both are in the nature of farewells, and neither leads to anything else. Yes, the girls are close to each other. But this doesn't make them any more gay than is the case in many animes when one guy hangs all over another guy.
This story is about relationships, emotions, friendship, maturing. The humor is not the laugh-out-loud type but is rather dry; Sachiko's introduction to a fast-food restaurant is a case in point.
The color scheme is beautiful, and what can I say, the girls are beautiful too. The music is pleasant, and I especially enjoyed the classical parts. It's certainly worth watching again.

| Alright, I'm writing this review almost completely from scratch after not watching this anime for several months and from watching many other things. That way, it's much more fair and unbiased.
Don't get me wrong though, I still enjoyed this anime. The thing is, it was not as good as I had originally thought right after I finished it. On a whole, Marimite did many things well and the many elements of the show (animation, sound, etc.) came together nicely. Everything had a very soft, warm feel to it. Things happen, life happens. It's one of those types of anime. So if you aren't a patient person (or if you don't like a lot of lesbian overtones or if you dislike school life/romance genre), I will warn you now to stay away from this. Run. Fast. Now, if you're still here, read on to discover a delightful and charming piece of work.

| I absolutely love this anime. I love the lack of "action", the slow movements of the characters, this atmosphere of calmness with a deep drama hidden in it. The complicated, emotional relationships are so real and moving. Like some kind of a web.. Yeah, that's my impression, the characters are in a web of emotions, like in the real life.
If you're looking for an anime that focuses on the emotions and deep interactions between the characters, most probably you'll enjoy this series. There are not many "yuri" moments, you won't get the "action" like this in it as well. If the fact that the staff is mainly female revolts you, no problem, but still, you miss a piece of a wonderful anime.

| I painfully watched the first 4 episodes, and was mostly laughing at the anime during that time. I thought this was an anime I wouldn't be able to finish. But, a week would go by, and this show would be calling me...just to watch another episode, even though I thought it was pathetic.
What happened is something I would never expect, I feel in love with the characters and even just the subtle movements of the characters, the animation was brilliant. I was enchanted just by the way the characters walked, sat, danced and even ate. Everything was perfect in this world, and nothing could seem to go wrong.
The brilliance of this show needs to be seen by watching the whole 13 episodes. If you watch only a few, you might miss the magic and hilarity this show brought myself. Watch it! A must see.

| Maria-sama Ga Miteru is a fairly basic shoujo anime that is made unique by its shoujo-ai undertones. While it doesn’t feel very original or stand out from the crowd much, it is still an excellent series that fans of shoujo will enjoy very much. There is no fan service or yuri present here, so if that’s what you’re looking for, then you should look elsewhere. Maria-sama Ga Miteru is presented in a realistic manner and it takes itself relatively seriously, so while the series is on the whole, fairly lighthearted, there isn’t much silliness present here.
The animation is very smooth and detailed, and most of the main characters are very nice looking (although the main character, Yumi, looks somewhat generic.) The soundtrack will be a hit with anyone who appreciates classical music. Most of the soundtrack, including the opening and ending are quite nice, done in classical style, which fits with the theme and mood of the anime.
There’s not much story to go around here, as it is a very character-focused anime. While there is a fairly large cast of characters, it is unfortunate that only 3 of them get much screen time. But this is only a 13 episode series, so you can’t expect too much. The characters who are focused on are very likable and well developed, and throughout the series will come to feel like a good friend to you; a true staple of a great shoujo anime.
On the whole, Maria-sama Ga Miteru is a great anime that is extremely enjoyable, and any fan of shoujo should make it a priority to check this one out, as well as its sequel (‘Maria-sama Ga Miteru ~Haru~’; a direct continuation, more like a second season.)

| Well, very "strange" anime. Though at first sight it seems somewhat boring (and most likely is if you dislike shoujo), I couldn't stop watching it, despite the rather weak storyline, being mostly about the girls' relations with each other. A nice anime overall, all about revery rather than action.

| I personally love the anime. I love its setting and story. The show concentrate on normal(kinda) every-life of members of Yamayuri-kai, a student council of Lilian Catholic school. It beatifully protrays development of the characters, their friendship, love and relationship between senpei and koihei.
If you're looking for action, fanservice, or major comedy (like Azumanga or Sensei no Ojikan), this is probably not what you want. If you're open to a slower pace non-action, harem,or mecha type anime, I highly recommend this.

| This is one of the most engaging animes I have seen in quite a while. The story is akin to that of Azumanga Daioh, and in fact the two main characters remind me of Chiyo chan and Miss Sukaki. What I particularly loved was the subtlety and the sophistication of this show... the cliche kawaii overeractions are few and between; while there is some yuri/shojo-ai (lesbian) undertones in this one, even that is handled very well, being very subtle and innocent, and the content of the show makes me comfortable enough for me to let my young sisters watch. This is in actually, a hero-worship show, and the setting is perfect, but then again... that is why it is in such a setting to begin with.
Overall, one of the best animes in its class, and like Newtype USA agreed, a change of pace from all of the harem shows coming out.

| There are three reasons why I got suddenly interested in this series. First of all, the setting. I love the setting, and it is rare for me to see an anime where students attend in a Catholic School. Second, the characters are mostly girls. Third, I heard there's a 'shoujo-ai' thing in here. I know it's odd to combine 'shoujo-ai' and a 'Catholic School' setting, but hey, I've been in a co-ed Catholic school, and I have a distant cousin who attends in an all-girls Catholic School and she ended up having a girlfriend.
Anyway, the 'Soeur' system plays a major role in this series. It seems like the first years really admire their onee-sama, thus, resulting to shoujo-ai and more emotions.
And of course, who will forget Rosa Gigantea? She's just too amusing.

| Maria Sama ga Miteru is a series that revolves around the life of a group of High School students in an all girl school... as clichè as it might sound the way it is treated is far from what it is seen in other similar series.
More than relying on a good story, the strong point of the show is the characters' development and intrelationships, which are protrayed in quite a beautiful, nicely slow paced way. No, this series doesn't have a bit of fanservice, so if that is what you are searching here, you will be utterly disapointed. However, if what you are searching are multidimensional characters being developed, then this is for you.
In a nutshell, the 'main' protagonist (main because, although we see her the most, the other characters are really developed as well, to the point that there are times in the series when one forgets about the main character :p), is Fukuzawa Yumi, a sophomore of the Lilian's Jogayouen.
This school has something special, which is the soeur system, which is somehow similar to the seniorship system in Japan. Some new students and their senpai may agree to become soeurs, in which normally a close friendship bond is developed, where the Big sister will teach and guide the younger sister, while the latter will support the sister .
Well, this Fukuzawa Yumi doesn't has a soeur, however, one day she met Ogasarawa Sachiko, one of the members of the Yamayurikai... who, because of certain situation that is unkwown to Yumi, asks Yumi to become her soeur...

| Had I been aware of Maria-sama ga Miteru’s premise, I wouldn’t have touched it with a nine-foot pole. I hate yuri. Yaoi’s worse. With this anime, we essentially have a hentai’s dream: cute homosexual “maidens in a prestigious and refined Catholic school. But thank god my overblown suspicious were wrong. This is about as girl-on-girly as say, Revolutionary Girl Utena.
….but not nearly as interesting. In fact, I was reminded of MADLAX: An anime with class and potential if you could only keep your eyes open. This anime is quite tedious, and after I watched the first episode, I didn’t touch this show for three weeks. But I finally decided to plod through it. And I realized that the story is probably the best part of the anime. I can best compare this to Gunslinger Girl. No, no, it’s not the story itself, but the way it’s handled. Both anime have stories that primarily focus on the emotions and motivations of a handful of girls. But whereas Gunslinger Girl has strong characters and a weaker plot, MariMite has it the other way around.
Though most of the series is filled with tedium, there were five episodes (3-5, 10&11) that had my complete attention. In these five episodes, viewers are given excellent back-stories, one being for the most compelling character in the series (and I’ll get to her later). In these five episodes, we have longing, misunderstanding, love, loss, guilt, and rebellion. One of my favorite scenes is when Yumi (the protagonist) described Arashi look-alike #1 as being a calm, mild mannered girl who knits and drinks tea. Arashi look-alike #1 said she knows she appears that way, but she really isn’t like that at all. Her soeur, however, has a masculine appearance, but yet is quite feminine. I thought this was, well, real and I completely related to it. My best friend looks like some sort of freak that many people are afraid to approach. But he’s really a dork who wouldn’t hurt a fly. Well, he would, but he’ll be very gentle. In any case, amidst the tedium and occasional melodrama, there are bouts of realism that I found appealing. The best part of this series, however, is that the relationships weren’t forced or contrived. They were very natural, and believe in me, I fully expected otherwise.
As mentioned before, the characters are…..very bland and unremarkable. I imagine that some viewers will have problems keeping names straight and distinguishing a few characters from each other. For a main character, Yumi is fairly forgettable. Okay, she has a crush on this girl. So what? What else? The only interesting thing about Sachiko is that she doesn’t know that hamburgers are not eaten with forks and knives. Decide for yourself how pathetic that is. Very easily the best character in the series is Rosa Gigantea. Not only does she have a great back-story, but she has a personality to match. Flighty, teasing, and flirty, Rosa Gigantea is a great character, but unfortunately, she doesn’t appear often enough to make up for the rest of the dreary cast. There was one girl that appears in episode nine that will remain forever nameless because she was just so colorless that I didn’t bother remembering her name. Not only that, but I felt that her little story was overblown to begin with it. Valentine cards are that important?
All in all, after finishing this, I felt very much like I did after completing Key the Metal Idol. Perhaps I just watched a good work…... if only I could have kept my eyes open.

| This truly a breakthrough in the world of anime. MariMite is totally fresh and different from most animes out there. Yes, it is slow, and no there isn't an outstanding and incredible story that will leave you frozen in amazement. But Maria-sama offers much more than that. It presents to viewers a wonderful calmness that one can't help but enjoy.
The characters are so real. Their actions are very formal, and yet they themselves have an air of admirablity about them. This anime focuses mostly on character, and does a great job illustrating the relationships between all the different girls. I only wish they had developed the initial roses a bit more...
As for the animation, I personally think it's beautiful. The detail is absolutely gorgeous, especially in the eyes and the hair. The expressions are animated smoothly as well.
The voice acting is done well, not outstanding, but each voice certainly fits their character. I *love* the music, it is so gentle and soft. I don't even know how to describe it. Truly a nice escape from the usual jpop that accompanies anime.
But, if you don't like shoujo-ai, you may want to steer away from this one. As subtle as it is, it's definitely there. And yet, it is one of the *few* animes that actually contain girl-girl romance not intended for fanservice. Thus, a round of applause for Marimite! ^_^ I really love this anime and it's touching relationships. If you're looking for action, like people said before, stay away from this anime. But, if you appreciate something different, an anime purely about people, emotions, and relationships, then I think you should try this show.
And no, this isn't a huge yuri love fest =P No worries there, I'd like to think Marimite is above something as tactless as that.(you want yuri, go watch some hentai)
