| Bereits nach der ersten Episode von Gokusen dürfte so ziemlich jedem auffallen der bereits GTO gesehen hat, das sich Gokusen auffällig einige Grundkonzepte aus dem ungemein populären Schoolcomedyhit ausborgt. Damit erreicht Gokusen in erster Linie nur eines und das ist den Zuschauer unweigerlich dazu zu bringen die beiden Animes nebeneinander zu stellen und zu vergleichen. Eigentlich ist es nicht wirklich fair, denn jeder weiß das GTO ein Meilenstein ist der wohl ewig unerreicht bleiben wird, aber Gokusen lädt dank seiner allzu offensichtlichen „Inspiration“ von GTO unweigerlich dazu ein und macht es sich somit selbst unheimlich schwer den Erwartungen des Zuschauers gerecht zu werden. Das Gokusen dies schlussendlich nicht mal im Ansatz schafft liegt aber nicht nur darin begründet das der Anime vom Schatten GTOs kilometerweit überragt wird, sondern auch an der Qualität Gokusens an sich. Das Konzept mit dem Hauptcharakter der Lehrer ist bzw. sein will, einen kriminellem Hintergrund mitbringt und sich einem Haufen aufmüpfiger Schüler stellen muss deren Sympathien es zu erringen gilt, ist in aller erster Linie eine gute Grundlage. Egal ob abgekupfert oder nicht. Leider macht Gokusen so gut wie überhaupt nichts daraus und versagt in so ziemlich allen Punkten die GTO groß gemacht haben. Ich habe jeglichen Anflug von Tiefgang in Hinblick auf den sozialen Umgang von Lehrern und Schülern vermisst und auch die Behandlung ernster Themen wie Mobbing, Suizidgedanken von Schülern oder Familienkrisen, wirkt in Gokusen stark unausgereift und es wird damit auch nur an der Oberfläche gekratzt. In GTO gab es haufenweise Gefühlstumulte, Psychosen, tiefsitzende Ängste und Krisenbewältigungen in der Charaktersparte zu verbuchen, die auf emotionaler Ebene voll und ganz überzeugten. Gokusen hingegen bewegt sich in dieser Hinsicht dagegen nur auf allerdünnstem Eis und schafft es zu absolut keiner Zeit auch nur irgendetwas hervorzubringen was den Zuschauer packt und ihn die Serie mit Interesse verfolgen lässt. Die Charaktere in Gokusen sind durch die Bank weg langweilig und unsympathisch. Der weibliche Hauptcharakter befindet sich zwar in einer sehr ähnlichen Situation wie Onizuka, bewältigt die auftretenden Probleme aber durchgängig auf eine simple und monotone Art die zusammen mit ihrem wenig überzeugendem Verhalten dafür sorgen das man sie schon früh satt hat. Das einzige was Yamaguchi und Onizuka gemeinsam haben ist übermenschliche Muskelkraft, wobei Yamaguchi diese hauptsächlich einsetzt um Konflikte zu lösen während Onizuka ständig durch unkonventionelle Weise den Tag rettet und obendrein noch eine Lektion über das Leben nach der anderen erteilt. Der Unterschied zwischen den beiden Serien könnte also gar nicht größer sein. Auch im Hinblick auf Comedy trifft das zu, denn das was Gokusen diesbezüglich abliefert ist absolut kläglich und ich verspürte in sämtlichen Episoden nicht mal das kleinste zucken im Mundwinkel. Zusammengefasst lässt sich letztendlich nur eins sagen: Gokusen ist nichts als ein lahmer GTO-Abklatsch, der nicht mal im Ansatz so witzig ist und noch weniger “pädagogisch wertvoll“. Klar, der Vergleich ist und bleibt unfair aber ebenso bleibt er leider unumgänglich und man WIRD diesen, sofern man GTO schon gesehen hat, ziehen soviel ist sicher!

So lets get started. I started to watch this anime series called Gokusen because I heard it was kind of like Great Teacher Onizuka and GTO is one of my favorite animes'. The only similarities that they have together are the main characters were both in gangs and wanted to become teachers and they both did. Unlike GTO, Gokusen only has a few things that might make you laugh. It's suppose to have comedy in it but the comedy department seems to be lacking.
Animation - There are some average things in this department and there is a deep low in this department. Well there were really no noticeable sketchy parts. The shading and coloring were average not bad and not the greatest. Now the bad part is the character design. The shapes of the characters were ugly. All of the characters' faces had really ugly lips its resally annoying because it's pretty hard to pay attention to the other parts of the animation when there is ugly character design.
Sound - The opening music theme was enjoyable it hd a happy feeling to it. The ending theme was average. The voice acting I did not like at all. It sounded really fake. For example when a character cries or is really serious I want to feel like its actually them, but it just seemed that the seiyuus were not puting effort into it. An example you know when a little kid does a fake cry to get attention, *YOU DO*, good exactly thats what it the characters sounded like.
Story - When I first sat down to watch this anime I was hoping no expecting a good story. The story is about a women who has a yakuza family and wants to become a teacher which she did. In about every episode her student find their way into trouble and she basically always has to get them out. it is enjoyable to see what happens next.
Characters - The students grew to like their teacher. There were also the characters that didn't have much purpose. Though the characters were pretty likable with their actions at timnes. The Characters are the best part of this anime.
. And if you still decide to watch this expecting it to be as good as GTO you really didn't pay attention. . I only recomend buying Gokusen if you really liked it and will rewatch this. But buy it off the internet it's cheaper or do what I did watch it on TV a t one of those encore channels.

| Gokusen the anime was palatable; it wouldn’t give you a stomachache but it wasn’t exactly a gourmet feast either. It can be entertaining at times but it really didn’t engage any of my other emotions. The premise is simple – the granddaughter of the head of a Yakuza family fulfills her dream of becoming a teacher and gets stuck with a class of delinquents. If you go into the show thinking she’ll use their common basis to touch and better the lives of these students, you’re in for a disappointment.
On the surface, this seems like one of those “dedicated teacher understands, accepts and helps those students that others have given up on” type show, but behind it all Gokusen isn’t like that. Yamaguchi Kumiko (Yankumi), the teacher/Yakuza heiress is the primary focus of the show. Most of the episodes deal Yankumi’s struggle to balance her two different lifestyles and her need to keep her Yakuza background a secret from others. She may help some of the students along the way, but that seems to be more of a byproduct. The phrase “you can take the girl out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the girl” seems very apt for this series because Yankumi makes so many slip-ups that it’s surprising that her secret wasn’t discovered right away.

| Move along, move along... nothing too special here. An all powerful female character daughter of Yakuza whose dream (although for a weird reason) is to be a teacher. She goes to a delinquent school and gets assigned a deliquent class... and through a series of comedic events, works to change the students and their attitude towards life.
Despite the numerous similar animes/mangas/movies out there following this same theme of a powerful teacher reaching to the hearts of the uneducated and rough youngsters, I tried my best to approach this with a non-biased or pre-determined judgement. I watched this series for it is, ignoring all sense of GTO or The Subsitute and trying to view this as its own piece.
My end conclusion: Gokusen relies too heavily on this idealization of Yakuza as being the modern age samurai to take this anime seriously. Although the school humor gets pretty entertaining at times, it relies heavily on Yankumi's super human martial arts strength to save the day when the going gets rough or some sort of random infusion of familial Yakuza life to impress the reader that our teacher is not of the usual;;; not too impressive. I didn't feel ANY character bond at all and all the mini-background stories were just lame and pointless. This anime is purely for short term entertainment purposes.
Heavily reliant on using the fist (yazkua power) to convey humor, I had a few laughs now and then. But overall, I didn't really like Gokusen. There was nothing memorable in this short humor series. The main character who cannot lose her Yakuza way of life is a crappy teacher, she's doesn't really bond with the students in the "correct" way. The students are pretty retarded looking and would most likely grow up to be this Gokusen style idealization of Yakuza anyway.

| I watched the entire series in one sitting yesterday, this was about 2 weeks after watching the JDorama (live action) version and about 1 year after watching it for the first time.
This anime is funny, entertaining and packed full of great characters.
It's what I would class as your typical school-yard "delinquents" tale, but with plenty of fresh ideas to make it seem new and different ^_^

| A fun, small and "easy digestable" show. After watching the first episodes it already reminded me about GTO, as many other also mention. However, I found this series to be quite entertaining and amusing.
The quality of the animation was not very impressive and the story not very stirring. Sound and characters are overall average. I will recommend this anime show to anyone, but only as a good time-killer. If you liked watching "GTO", you will probably also enjoy this one.

| "Oh, another cheap School-Life anime..." - that's what i thought when started watching it, but it turned out rather interesting. And as i always, i felt withm my marking into the trap of enjoyment. Despite of the simple (or not? :) ) plot the problems touched during the series are living. I am not trying to say crap like "everyone will find something crucial to himself, somethin very important in this anime", no. The understanding of the "thought and debate" side of this anime will come after watching it, like each of you must have a dream and put everything on a line to achieve it, like you should never give up....but what a hell you might ask - this kind of stuff we can find almost in every anime series. And the answer will be "yes", but it is another opportunity to watch a nice series and to receive a day-needed portion of enjoyment in order ro continue to live.
P.S. I've just started watching the TV series Gokusen, broadcast by NTV (a Japanese broadcaster?). Well, it is very funny to watch as the 'film' (read: series) was made in anime-style of representing things :^)

| Gokusen is fairly nice to watch with a story that wasn't really too imitative compared to GTO. However, the whole concept of it wasn't really as funny or had that insightful substance from what it had to offer when they both had that similar concept. I thought that the opening wasn't really creative on its part, however the ending theme was pretty decent. The animation is slightly weaker to newer titles that is out there, and some of the voices weren't as bad as I thought. The characters were though as something you'd expect from the story to start with; for instance, the troublesome students and the controlling teacher that wanted such order in the school. However, the main character on this, who is Yamaguchi, had some fair intentions of changing her students; but really just really wanted only to pursue as being a teacher, and tried to keep her present gang life to a minimal so her job wouldn't jeopardized from her life as being part of a Yakuza family. In addition, the humor on her is pretty hilarious when at times she does at least try to give that certain humility when dealing with some the situations; while having a messed bind between her family and school life. It is a fun series for its comedy alone; but nothing else that's newly given from the whole series. You're not missing much if you haven't watched this yet.

| It's inevitable but to compare it with GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka). They have parallelisms here and there but they do have one difference: Onizuka dissolves the problem, Yankumi solves it.
Most parts of it are so GTO but I don't mind, her character is very cool in her own way.
I liked the animation especially when it came to the fight scenes and blood. Although there are limited bishies, oh well.
I didn't pay attention to the OST, it really didn't catch my attention.
The story is fast-paced, it is very compressed and that's what I totally love about it. There are mysteries here and there and it'll make you think what she's gonna do next. I watched only up til ep 5 of the jdorama though...I'm looking forward to it. I heard the drama has season 2 already. I hope the anime does too.
The characters are sometimes unpredictable, they're never boring. They can be violent but funny, they could touch you unexpectedly, but the best part is the character's development and consistency.
I'd definitely watch this again and recommend it to my friends.

| I almost missed this series all together from some of the reviews ive read on this site but thankfully i gave it a chance.
This series gives you the same warm feeling youve gotten when watching such series as Great Teacher Onizuka and such, really well done characters, plot is stable and well thought out.
The ending was quite open for what was instore for the characters in the future but you really felt the connection the characters had with eachother. This series was quite funny at times and just an all around joy to watch.
This series contains somewhat graphic violence (depicting blood). 100% recommened if you liked Great Teacher Onizuka. Still recommened if your looking for a good-time fuzzy heart warming series.

| I think Gokusen is really a great anime, even though the artwork isn't really my taste. I really enjoyed watching it over and over again, and never get bored. True, the dorama version is much better, but the anime is still great.

| A nice little series which would be moderately enjoyed by school drama fans such as myself. This series did have a lot of potential in the core storyline but it didnt live up to my expectations. In the end it was just trying too hard to recapture the feelings from Great Teacher Onizuka (GTO), which did a much better job at fleshing out the characters. Because of being under the GTO shadow it falls flat on its face and what we get is a mediocre, cliched school drama with the same themes and same characters in a toned down ripoff of GTO.
I'd like to say that it was unique in its own way but unfortunately its not. There were a couple of truly funny moments here and there but its all been done before, and in the end has nothing new to offer. I'd recemmond it to school drama fans for a casual watch but others should find GTO as the best in the genre.

| A fun 13 episodes that's a lot like Great Teacher Onizuka, although with a simpler story. Instead of an ex-biker gang leader that becomes a teacher it's the daughter, and heir to the throne of, a Yakuza family. Yamaguchi gets hired at a bad school and is put in charge of the "hell class" or whathaveyou and slowly turns then all into model students. Watching yamaguchi slip out of "teacher mode" and into "yakuza mode" during school is hilarious and most of the time she takes problem solving into her own hands, quite litteraly. Could have been longer, and the story could have had a little more substance, but I dont see this as being made to compete with GTO. Instead, it pays homage to a great show and provides fans of that kind of story some new material to sink their teeth into.

| Another random download. This time, it's another "Great Teacher Onizuka." There's no other word then "same" to describe the similarities between "GTO" and "Gokusen." A person with a gangester background wants to teach. A bunch of students who hate the teachers. The teacher will eventually make all students in the class like him/her. Blah Blah Blah..... However, this time, it sound more traditional then GTO. At least Onizuka has quited his gangster life when he becomes a teacher; Yamakumi, however, born to be a gangster, raised in a Yakuza family and become the boss (not quite) of the gang Ooedos. Since this is almost identical to GTO, I don't bother to repeat. Yamakumi's way of teaching, are better then Onizuka, though. At least Yamakumi teaches math seriously, but Onizuka can't teach a class in a normal manner.
There's also some difference in story line: Onizuka never tries to cover his gangster manner, but Yamakumi always doesn't want anyone knows she is a gangster. The students from "GTO" are not quite gangsters. They are bunch of smart kids who can tease teachers; Yamakumi class, however, are a bunch of punk kids. Onizuka teaches his students about street smart, but Yamakumi teaches her class to become a better person. Those are the noticable differences.
In general, another OK series. It's not as funny as Onizuka, though, everything in Gokusen deal with gangsters, which GTO doesn't do much with. Maybe because of lack of comedy in this series, I'm not as enjoyful as watching GTO. Anyway, it's still an OK series to watch. This is definitely a perfect comparison (or I should say: carbon copy) to GTO. Give this a shot if you dare. Or if you never watch GTO, this can give you the first taste of GTO.
Also, I recommend the drama version of Gokusen. The story is a bit different then in anime, but that is one good drama that fans should look at.

| A nice anime to watch... kinda shows what ideal teachers would be.. and what gangsters wouldn't be. Yankumi's dedicated will and belief in her students bring them all closer to trusting her. But even with such a dedication, if any of the higher authorities in the school knew her real identity within the Yakuza.. her dream job will be blown to pieces.

| As soon as I watched the 1st episode of gokusen, it reminds me instantly of GTO. Sure there are some difference between them, but re-used material cannot succeed everytime. Basically the producers just wanted to spawn this 'product' into a profitable series... A drama after the anime, get tons of $$$... To say frankly, Gokusen is nowhere near GTO in terms of storyline and interest.

| I enjoyed this anime overall. I think one thing people forget is that this anime actually started out as a live action japanese dorama. (not the other way around like *shudder* Sailor Moon)
The characters are fairly shallow and stereotypical of 'punks', but the series is only 13 episodes long so it works. This anime isn't deep or profound, but it gives you a warm squishy feeling watching it.
I love Yankumi because she is really more like one of the gang than a teacher or a Yakuza leader. I think she is a truly likable character. Yes, she's flawed, but she tries.
If you want to watch an anime that you don't want to think about and just want to sit back and enjoy, this is an excellent choice. It's fun, fast paced and silly. I think both hard core anime fans and newbies will enjoy this series so long as they just want to watch something fun.

| Well, maybe you can say that this anime is only a rip of GTO ( well, GTO talk about a teacher whose only objective ins his life, have funny ( with an adult meaning ) with the pretty young girl's of the institute, only for a revenge ( but in Gokusen, yamaguchi is the daughter of yamakuzi head, and she would be the head of her dojo to, but, at the same time, she dream to be a teacher, and a normal person ) ), or maybe is that you haven't seen Gokusen. The story isn't excelent but it seems to be funny ( I haven't seen all the chapters ( only chapters one to eight ) ), the sound i acceptable ( I like the opening ), the characters are funny ( coverall Yamaguchi-sensei ( she tries to seem a normal person but she isn't able to do it ( at it seems ridiculous, and funny ) ) ), but they aren't originaly.
Afterall this anime is only a comedy, and enjoyment anime to see if you are bored ( probably you will laugh with it ).

| I never take anything my collegue Last_Exile says seriously thesedays, and I suggest you (The reader) to do the same.
To say these anime has "worse" animation then "Planetes" is quite a compliment, considering the former has some very stunning background art, and considerable CGI effects, that being a sci-Fi series, so it's hardly surprising that Gokusen wouldn't have any of those as its a 13 episode 2 part TV series, and everyone knows short TV sponsored series aren't exactly known for there great qualities, depending on the animation studio and manga/story its base upon of course. But then you already knew that, so lets get go going with this review.
As other of my collegue stated it bear similiar character traits to a classic, "GTO" it features a former Yakuza bike gangster teacher bent on beating her students into a well formed class with violence, ecchiness, and stupid costumes and did i mention she has a best friend who is a motorbike mechanic and has a foreign girlfriend, and- oh hang on thats "GTO"'s plot. *rolleyes*
No the real story is of a 3rd Generation Granddaughter of a Yakuza Clan, who though various incidents has choosen to become a teacher for the sake of those beloved Yakuza dropout who was abused by bad teachers....with me so far? She wants to be a teacher and yet shes fated to be the next Boss. So in all this, she gets though this by beating those who harm her students, put the rightous moral though comedic encounters and the token love interest, oh and the occasional help from her big breasted Bishounen-obsessed Teacher collegue. Its fun, relaxing and hardly serious, even the friction of her "family" and her professional life hardly disrupes the overall plot. It was never meant to be a competion to GTO more of a homage, a offering to the great classic, this anime should MAKE you want to watch GTO. A must watch for those who love comedy, and not-too-hard-to-follow story.
