| If Kono Minikuku Mo Utsukushii Sekai/This Ugly yet Beautiful World feels a little bit like Evangelion than Gainax must be a part of it. Like many Gainax stories it's not that complex (aside from the ending). This is a good starter anime to the sci-fi genre, but veterans may be bored with this.

| This is one of my absolute favourite animes! Normally I don't write reviews, but I felt that I had to with this one not being taken seriously.
Firstly I'd like to explain my point of view.
When I see anime I'm getting told a story. Somehow, if I analyze my reactions, I seem to think that the story is true and real, but it's still a story. I don't watch anime to remember things or in some way make experiences based on the anime such as "oh, he's carrying a naked woman on his back, it'd feel nice to carry a naked woman on my back right now." So it's not something like a substitute reality, but a story that's separated from my life unless I welcome it inside. Therefor I normally don't care very much if there's a naked girl here or some big breasts there, it doesn't cause a reaction unless I'd want to think about my girlfriend... a pretty flower might cause the same reaction as that, even.

| The Animation is very good. Very Clear & Pretty, Character Designs are very nice & the sceneries are well done. Even the Monsters are drawn and animated Very Well. No Problems with Animation, Even the Opening & Ending theme Animation was Very Pretty, they must have had a lot of money in their budget. But in the opening theme, there is a scene of Hikari in a field of Sunflowers, I can't help comparing it with the scene in AIR TV's Opening theme, where the main character was in a field of Sunflowers as well. It just reminded me of AIR TV's Animation which was even Nicer, More Detailed & Beautiful than KMmUS's. But I have to say, the animation is fit of the Standards for an anime made in 2004. =)
About the budget, I seriously think they had a lot of money to spare, Because even the OP & ED Theme songs were very nice, the OP theme fitted the mood of KMmUS quite well, & the Animation that went together with it was very WeLL Done, & the ED theme was a very nice Happy-go-Lucky Cheerful Tune. Which fits the innocent mood of KMmUS, however, it was a bad point when sometimes the anime ended in a sad or distressed situation, and this cheerful music comes and annoys the mood. The Seiyuus were pretty good as well. I have no Complaints as both the Animation & Sounds were Very Well Done.
Now, the story of KMmUS, it seems like this storyline (or at least part of it) has been re-used over and over, again and again. Someone who will decide the Destruction of the World, suffers from amnesia or not being able to remember anything about their past before, lives together happily with the main character, usually the opposite gender, and with more another person in the same house. It's like Elfen Lied but with a mix of some Science Fiction of Space, the World, & It's Evolution on Earth & It's Destiny.
Well, It is After all, This Ugly Yet Beautiful World, so i guess it did a decent job in showing the different point of view. How beautiful the World was, & how Ugly it is in another view... After all, everything HAS a Good side & a Bad Side, that can't be helped. But somehow, the story seems quite cliche, you can probably predict what would happen, it's like i've watched something like this before. But then again, I suppose KMmUS wasn't exactly thaaat bad of a show either. It was pretty decent. But nothing Fantastic Either. It may provide some laughs, & has it's emotional times. Well, after all, the comedy is there to show the Cheerful, Light Hearted Times, & the Emotional Times are to show the Deep, Feelings & sometimes Negative emotions. However, they were just decent, & nothing Excelling.
I Suppose you can say that KMmUS has a lot of fanservice, It shows a lot of Naked Bodies, & a Lot of Girls with Good Proportions, & a lot of Pervert Times or Accidental Moves that make the Characters Tomato-Red Embarrassed. Well, i didn't really mind and they served as good comedy for those "light-hearted" times... =)
The Characters are pretty much characters you have seen before in other animes. The Character Designs & Characteristics are just Not really Unique enough and it's like they're being re-used in this anime, Ryou looks like a Taller Version of Minoru from Chobits, The rich intelligent kid(fyi), also sharing the same quiet, nice guy personalities, except Ryou is a bit more open. Hikari looks quite alike to Mikuru from The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi, The Mascot of SOS Brigade. Mari's green hair and personality is very alike to Midori, the female lead in Midori no Hibi. Stuff like that, the character designs & characteristics are those you would most probably have seen from other animes. Then again, it might be nice to see the characters from those different animes living with each other.xD. If this is the first anime you are watching, then you probably would think the characters are very different & probably unique.
& also, the Hot, Clever, Sexy Professor Jennifer Portman that has come to Japan from Overseas and coincidentally lives together with Takeru & Mari & Hikari. who also coincidentally gets all the first-hand info for her project. & she comes up with a lot of hypothesis and theories that are quite accurate. and the person who's always explaining about the things that has been happening based on her Hypothesis and Theories, which are never-the-less, never wrong... So tit seems like her character is sooo inhuman and soo psychic, she can make such accurate comments just by looking at so little evidence. It's a slight flaw, cause it just isn't normal at all for a human to be able to do that...
Oh yeah, & I found it really strange how the main character, Takeru could Fall in Love and already vow-ed to protect a mysterious girl he just met, and don't even know where she came from. It seemed like this anime was also trying to rush quite a bit. Another Example is, The Situation which usually happens in the Middle (usually episode 10 + )or at the end of an anime, where the girl runs missing and guy has to find her and bring her back home, it only happened in the 2nd episode, which gave me the feeling KMmUS was ReaLLy Rushing things to Develop Emotions for the Characters at a Faster Rate. Though it wasn't really that good of a work, & it was quite hard for me to believe it anyway (with common sense and such)...
Is there anything else i can say about this anime?
It's a pretty decent anime. It's probably worth a watch, but nothing extremely wonderful or outstanding from other animes. I won't be surprised if you love this anime if it is the first anime you are watching. But if you're someone who have watched a number of animes already, you would probably think this is an average anime.
I Praise KMmUS for its Wonderful Animation & Great Music, it has a decent Storyline & decent Characters, the character development and plot was good to watch and interesting in its way. But like i said, Nothing Excelling either. & from one of the previous reviews, "it tried too hard to be successful in many areas and ended up being medicore"... Very True...
If You're Bored, you could probably give Kono Mimikuku mo Utsukushii Sekai a watch.

| Many will overlook KonoMini because of it's excessive fanservice, it's shallowly developed characters, and it's weak fantasy world. I will agree with them. KonoMini has decent animation, but horrible sound not even worth mentioning. In this review, I am forcing story to represent the execution of the purpose of the anime.
All literature and works of art have one of two purposes: To enlighten or to entertain. And there's a third one too actually: to make money. That said, the story in KonoMini is poorly done. It's circuitous, unfaithful to the ultimate goal of the anime, which I will discuss later, and adulterated with fanservice. Yes, it will probably make you a lot of money to appeal to the baser desires of humans, won't it?
But there is value. No matter how smothered up it is in pollution, there is SOME value in the anime because the animators intended to enlighten us instead of just entertain us. Look at Cowboy Bebop: It entertains us, and it's decently executed, so people like it. KonoMini is the opposite: It enlightens us, but it's poorly executed. It's so poorly executed in fact, that it barely starts to enlighten us by the final episode. All has been wasted to nothingness.
So what was the intent of KonoMini? It would ruin the fun if I just told you, but perhaps you have to see it for yourself. See it now because of the quality of the anime - it lacks it - but for the opportunity to see a good intention succumb to poor execution, resulting in thirteen episodes of colored frames and a whole lot of nothing.

| Kono Minikuku mo Utsukushii Sekai (This Ugly Yet Beautiful World) is the tale of two sisters, Hikari and Akari. They appear in a forest one night in front of two guys, Takeru and Ryo. Takeru swears to protect Hikari from whatever may come against her. The two go on a series of adventures involving Takeru's school friends, an American agent, and much more. Monsters will, on occasion, attack Hikari, because she may have a more sinister appearance...

| Oh jeez. Alright. This may be the lowest score I've given to any anime ever. Why? Because this anime, while it doesn't suck ENTIRELY, comes pretty close. Like when scientists try and go for absolute zero and come within a trillionth of a degree, this is how close this anime comes to nilch and zero substance.
Well...let me start off by saying that regarding the plotline, the creators of this anime made a noble effort and had good intentions. However, the main crux of the plot became severely polluted with fanservice and other pish-posh. I mean...characters that weren't even half developed were mindlessly chattering away about how this person needed a new dress or something like that.
If you look carefully, through all the fanservice, you'll see that the point that this anime tries to go for is actually identical to the one that "The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi" tries to go for. If I were to compare the two animes, this one would get itself crushed into oblivion, so I won't, but I'm just saying that "TMOSH" is what this anime could have been if it weren't for the need to satisfy the baser desires of the male watching population (if you know what I mean).
Alright. So I just trashed this anime into frozen bananas, right? Well, I'll say that I did enjoy bits and pieces, what, with all the good looking girls and such. I'm still a sucker for those kinds of things no matter what. It's just the lack of a coherent plot that makes me want to burn my house down, chew on some sewing needles, and liquefy this anime so that I can drink it, since I'm out of orange juice.
Hey, at least the animation and sound were decent.

| I came across this title by accident, just deciding to watch it since I downloaded it
The animation and sound is quite superb. Especially the opening theme, which was upbeat and had the 90s meach anime opening vibe. The bgm were done very well, matching the scenes when it was emotional, silly or happy. The animation was great, I only spotted one or two rough spots here and there...but at least Gainax was more generous with its budgets this time around :)
Typical DearS story where a girl tries to learn about the world. The story was interesting, although it felt like it was constantly borrowing from their previous works...the ending had that EVA feel to me.
It was rather disappointing to see the story going downhill after ep 1 (Which by the way, was one of the best intro eps I ever watched), the following eps were rather boring, with the pair of alien girls getting excited over the simplest things on Earth. It constantly tries to be deep with the message of "Finding something ugly in this beautiful world", but it really fails to execute that well.
The fanservice was...excessive, served no purpose at all and was really degrading the focus of the story
The characters were likeable at best, but rather underdeveloped. The best of the bunch was Akari and Ryou, who had more personality. Really hated the scientist woman...
In the end, it tried too hard to be successful in many areas and ended up being medicore. The ending's climax was rather low, but was surprisingly bittersweet and happy at the same time.
Watching it or not is up to you.

| Now, for all of those fans of Evangelion's last two episodes, KonoMini is precisely the anime for you. Boasting an overabundance of eastern philosophy, disgustingly excessive fanservice, a pitiful episodic plot and oh-so-shallow characters who all suffer from moderate to severe bi-polar disorder, how could one possibly turn KonoMini away?
Okay, so it's Gainax; high quality animation is a given. Not surprisingly, for a series based around the beauty of nature, KonoMini boasts ambient, vivid environments. At least initially. Not long after the first few episodes, instead of being only half-devoted to breasts, the shift fully occurs -- just about the only environments you'll find are those involving nudity. If I could somehow bend my score system to rate Konomini down because of this, I would do so in a heartbeat, but alas, that would be implanting slightly too much bias into this review.
Actually, since it has been a while since I last saw KonoMini (thank God...), thoughts about the sound rating were hardpressed in returning to me; perhaps with good reason. Then, I unwillingly remembered that the opening and ending sequences were in my music archives. A stupid mistake on my part, as tonight I have felt slightly queasy, after playing the opening through once, my nausea nearly took fruition. Stay away from this stuff, far away; I foreworn potential viewers now, listen at your own risk.
Whereas I could elaborate for paragraphs on how much I passionately spited KonoMini's plot and characters, I believe Pantha summed it all up for me in a matter of three words: "tits and ass." Aside from a first episode to serve as an attention getter (even then riddled with nudity), KonoMini is entirely about Hikaru's breasts. If I wanted clumsy aliens with disproportionate bodies squirming all over the screen, I would go out and buy one of the billion Japanese dating sims. Alas, I do not, and as to why Gainax thought incorporating this into an anime was a good idea is still beyond me.
Now, the truly ironic part: my enjoyment rating is based off percentiles. Being 13 episodes, and that I only enjoyed the first, naturally the percent would fall as 1/13. Unfortunately, the scoring system does not let me stoop so low. Therefore, for one's own sanity, do not even go so far as to lay a finger in the general direction of this crap.

| This show isn't that bad. In fact, it's just above average in just about every area. It's addictive and light (most of the time), and it IS a Gainax show, so it had a few bizarre elements to it as well, so I would say it is worth seeing.
As I was watching this, I was wondering what exactly was going to happen. From reading a description of what the story is about, or taking a surface snapshot of what's going on, the answer seems obvious. However, it always seems as if something is bubbling just below the surface, and that's what keeps the viewer hooked. Not everything is explained at once, so you have no choice to keep watching.
I think I'm one fo few who empathized with the "bitch" of the show, Mari. I felt her pain more than I could feel Takeru's or Hikari's. There just wasn't enough development of either of the two main characters to make me really want to care about them.
The ending is mildly disappointing, but the journey there is a facinating one. It may not be an action packed journey, or even a very interesting one, but it's one that everyone should watch at least the first 5 episodes of. Episode 5 (School Days) was my favourite, so if people don't like it by then, then it's not for you.
That said, I usually don't remember episode numbers of ones that I liked, so episode 5 of Konomini has got to be one of my favourite anime episodes ever. Please give it a chance.
BTW, there are only 12 episodes...not 13 like the animenfo page says... ^^;; chack the official site if you think I'm a liar...

| When I first watched this series, it was in 2004, and I downloaded it on a weekly basis...but in the midsts of the other shows I was watching, it didnt hold much magnetic charm to me. The animation, typical GAINAX quality, was awesome, music fitting to the scenes, and like GAINAX plots, twisted and interesting, UNTIL the ending, where it just kinda cops out, and leaves you with a bitter taste.
However, fast forward over a year, to when I am writing this review. My comp burned out so while formatting it, I decided to give this series another go. After scrutinizing the plot alottle more thoroughly, I can say that this is a series definitely worth watching. Sure, it clones almost everything from Mahoromatic, with less ecchi, but the same art and voices and plot twists, but i think it had a semi-philosophical message about loneliness, love, and our ability to persevere. Seriously, this series is definitely worth a watch.

| This has go to be one of my favorite anime series! I wouldn't say top5, but definatly top15. And for me, that's really good as i've seen 70+ series now!
The animation in this series was really nice and the backgrounds where done really beutifully and great to look at. The only thing i didn't like was the way the character's hair looked plasticish at times, but that is forgivable :)
The sound in this series was great. I love the opening theme and it went well with the animation, the ending was perfect for this series, but not something i would listen to normally. The background music (bgm) suited the scenes really well in most cases and the voice acting (japaneese obviously) was fantastic.
The story in this show was really good (IMO) I here a lot of people call it a "poor man's elfen lied" and i can 100% disagree with that! I won't go into spoilers about it because i hate it when show get spoilt for me ^_^ but the two shows are only superficially similar.
The characters are a good point about this series. The situations they are put into are kind of clicie (my english isn't that good i'm trying to type the sound: "Klee Shay" but i'll fix this later) but this can be forgiven because of the other great aspects of the characters.
Value: I will certainly buy this series when/if it is released on R1 DVD! I sure hope it does get released, it should right? I mean it is GAINAX! This series is worth buying even for the battle scenes and backgrounds alone ;)
I really enjoyed this series all the way through, there was never an episode i didn't like. I prefer elfen lied to this series but i'm starting to get annoyed at elfen lied for making people think this is just a "poor man's elfen lied" and "not worth watching, just see elfen lied", but it's there loss if they choose not to watch this. I'm buying in the process of collection elfen lied and i'll also buy this when/if it is released!!

| This series starts out with having a good title, good animation, and a very enjoyable and promising first chapter, and yet, still fails to develop a good troughout story from begining to end during 13 chapters.
It seems to me that they tried to repeat what they did with Mahoromatic. They not only re-used most of the cast of that series, but also, intended to use the same basis and same amount and kind of characters, althought, with some differences, and there is where it started to fail.
By having some unuseful and undeveloped characters fitting in, they made up chapters that not only did not bring up anything useful to the story, but even could have been used to develop further the main plot, so that stuff like the sudden knowledge of a character's important plot details didn't seemed so forced. And so, just like this, it's not hard to figure out how this story could have been told in a better and more enjoyable way, because, just as it is, it could have been shown in an 8, 6 or even a 4-3 chapter ova.
Still, I can't say I didn't like it; it's just that I really think that it could have been better.

| Well, what can I say? Nice animation - I like the style of the characters (one of the reasons that I like Mahoromatic, which uses an almost identical style). The quality remains consistent throughout - usually a good sign.
Sadly, this anime was nowhere near as enjoyable to me as Mahoromatic. It starts out well enough, as the two male leads find these girls in the forest. However, after that it just descends for a while into the usual anime cliche episodes of beach, festival, etc... you know the ones. Except this show does it a little halfheartedly - that's how it seemed to me. Not once did I feel myself drawn into the story, and not once did I care about the characters. I wanted to - but it just didn't happen. Then there is the culmination in the last 3 episodes, and then it's over. No real explanation.
The characters themselves are an amiable bunch. Maybe they would've been better in a story with more punch to it. I dunno... there was just a certain spark missing here.
I really liked the OP theme... maybe that's why I stuck with this show. That and the animation. Who knows, maybe this would be better if it had an English dub??

| IM not sure why this anime has such a low score, I thought it was fantastic and was truely a touching and beautiful piece of work. I like everything about this show and am just sorry that there is no OVA sequel. I would like to see Hikari and Akari some more.

| Character development is well done but the story and ending is skewed. Definately draws you into the series as it reaches for the climax. This is expected from GAINAX as they usually twist the story in a strange way. However, I'm dissapointed in the fact that GAINAX repeated what they do in almost all of their series. That is, to close the series with an odd or cheap ending that leaves you saying uhh what the?...(Take Evangelion for example) If your really picky dont watch this series but if you want to try something different then i'd recommend it.

| "Kono Minikuku mo Utsukushii Sekai" is a very average anime series. After watching it to the end I cannot say that I'm sitting back with any memorable impressions of it.
As expected from GAINAX, the animation is very good! The nice, colourful animation in widescreen format made it excellent at my TV. The detail level was a litte above average.
The sound isn't in any way very good or bad. I liked both the opening and ending melody but however, there's nothing special to it.
The story, which is a very important part of every anime-series wasn't the best I have seen. It's also what you may call average. Though, in a small anime like this, consisting of 12 episodes one shouldn't expect too much of the story. It's not bad, but however nothing I will remeber for very long. After seeing "Mahoromatic" for some time ago, I mean that the characters are copies of those in "Mahoromatic", which also is a GAINAX production.. The voices are also the same.
Value is like this anime itself - average. I have seen it and will probably never watch it again. My enjoyment was average most time. I was very sceptical to start with, since I had read a lot of reviews that told me that this anime was a big disappointment. That's maybe why I liked this anime. I didn't have any big expectations for it and I therefore think it was okay, though nothing special.

| I liked the animation a lot, the story was overall ok. But they spent so much time with filler episodes that by the time it gets near the end, there isnt enough to really explain and develope a great phoenomenal ending, which with what story they did give it should have been a better ending than it was. I don't like that one couple's relationship changed at the end, it was very disappointing because most of all you wanted that couple to fall in love.
Good animation, they could have wasted less time with fillers an developed more story in 13 episodes.

| Kono Mini was an okay series. There wasn't much that was outstanding in it other than the music and the animation.
The animation is crisp and clear and features well-established character designs. The music is superb, with a catchy opening and ending theme, and great in-series music. The VAs are good and they suit the characters well.
The story is where I didn't like Kono Mini, and for the most part, this is the attribute that makes a good series to me. It starts off as a sci-fi series with a dash of philosophical themes, but it turns quickly into a series that resembles Love Hina to a T. Character development was shabby and not really emphasized, the primary characters (Takeru, Hikari, Akari...) are alluring enough, and even the secondary characters are lively to keep the story going, but the series doesn't really give a chance to develop any of them adequately.
I liked watching Kono Mini, but for the most part, it disappointed me on several levels.

| A disappointment, I got the feeling that the anime was just lazily constructed. The plot and the characters were just sketched out, leaving it to the audience's knowledge of other anime series to fill in the gaps.
The cast is Mahoro's, plus one seiyuu playing Takeru. The tone is inconsistent, a serious philosophical sci-fi/action anime sitting uncomfortably with a romance/domestic drama anime.
Music is decent, animation is clean and smooth. Contains some very nice elements early on, ecchi level is fairly innocent (if you can block out Jennifer Portman). Production values are good, it feels like Gainax could have made a better work if they just could be bothered.
The characters are superficially sketched and many of them are completely superfluous. I don't mind derivative characterisations, but the characters don't even do anything, or exert any sort of distinct presence. They tend to sit passively in place until the plot requires and then get up, perform their part, and sit down again.
The plot itself is a huge missed opportunity, eschewing the deep philosophy suggested by its title for something based around an underdeveloped romance. Akari is supposed to be an ambiguous character, but compared to Lucy of Elfen Lied, or even Yuuna of Maburaho, she's a Yamato Nadeshiko. The main characters' relationships are foregone conclusions, weakening any dramatic appeal.
I generally like filler eps that fill out the characters and the setting, but Konomini's really dragged for me; they didn't have as much of the charm as they should have, and too many were stringed together at once, slowing the plot development to a crawl while predictable things happened.
The story just didn't have any drive; you had a few mysterious things at the start, bits scattered here and there and undercut by everything else around it, and then the meaningless stuff at the end. The ending was pointlessly... I don't want to give it away, but I'll say that there was no point making it the way it was.

| Despite the lack of a story that came with this anime, I must say I enjoyed it immensely.
