Air Movie is no masterpiece and when you’re not blinded by emotions, you’ll probably find more fault than those I presented. But, that’s what makes it work. Air Movie flows almost infallibly with respect to both story and animation. It’s no Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen but all elements taken collectively makes for a wonderful love story that would make you cry and disregard such things as quality. On the other hand, Air Movie’s quality is not so bad either.

The quiet, dreamy perspective takes you on a touching journey that you would not forget that easily. Air Movie slowly creeps into your heart and stays there. It’s not the conventional happily ever after and in the end, it was one of the saddest movies I’ve watched (emotional-wise of course).
It’s difficult to put into words why I love Air Movie; some people love it, some people won’t watch it and some people don’t like it.

Compared to the original TV series, the movie does a better job on story telling and focusing on the "main" plot of the series. It does change the plot around and leave out some certain points (of which I do not remember...), but it helps elevate the movie since it's a mandatory 90-minute limit.

Pros: All the side characters get mostly just a cameo, the relationship between Yukito and Misuzu progresses at a more faster and believable rate, the atmosphere stays almost the same (especially since I just watched it... take note of when I write this!), Yukito finally gets some much-deserved attention from the kids, the weaving between the past and present is done splendidly, there are more parallels between the past and present (such as the shrine location), and Misuzu is less dumb than the TV version.

Cons: There is a distinct lack of Potato, the mother-daughter relationship is a little lacking, the scenes with the taigos were a little horrific, the animation is... different from the TV series (depends on your tastes, really), and the ending is... also different.

I couldn't believe I sat through the whole 90 minutes (I usually take a break in the middle...). I shed tears twice (a good thing). I got irritated by the sound quality of the Triad version. Otherwise, this movie can be watched first or second - it doesn't really matter.

(additions were added after second viewing)
*note that the review was done on the original japanese version and not associated with the ADV version (as they licenced AIR the movie around April 27th of 2007)*
A great (quite touching) movie; it really sqeezed my heart near the end!

Short description: AIR the movie focuses on a linear plot of romance and tragedy between Yukito Kunisaki and Misuzu Kamio.
*spoilers ahead; proceed at own risk*

Peek into the story:
The movie takes a linear path in an interpretation of the story line of Yukito Kunisaki and Misuzu Kamio from AIR (pc game/visual novel and anime *see also AIR TV + summer specials and AIR the movie*). Yukio is a lone traveler who ended up in a town for a festival where he plans to make money by his puppet show *he has the ability to move a puppet by his will/power*. However, he would be a week ahead of the festival. He came in contact with a girl named Misuzu who was doing summer field work for her school. Misuzu's interaction with Yukito starts to "warm his heart" and a relationship brews. However, at the same time, a "parallel plot"- legend of the winged being Kanna and the swordsman/samarai Ryuuya- starts to unfold as Misuzu's work is related to that legend. Ironically, Yukito was told by his mother about a winged girl in the sky who is crying and that Yukito has the power to save her.

As mentioned before, the movie is another interpretation of the AIR storyline which diverges from its orginal and anime form. It is understandable though that fans of the anime TV series might be disappointed in some of the changes in the movie, but it is no surprise that the movie was made purposely with such changes (for one obvious factor, an entire story had to be told in around 90 mintues).
I suscpect newcommers to the series (like i was) may enjoy the movie more than those more "hard-core" into the anime.
Again, this movie was still very enjoyable overall (though sad of course).
^^V

*categorial reviews will contain further opinoins and "comparisons" with the anime; comparisons were mostly for informational purposes rather than as points of criticism (as i believe there are enough examples of such use already)*

AIR Movie isn't a sequel to the AIR TV Series, It's just a different way and form that "almost" summarises the plot of the Series, but with the story distorted & Twiseted Extremely, and Animation toned down which results in less emotions.

Okay... So Where do i Start? The Movie was an Extremely Big Disappointment to me compared to the TV Series... Well, even if i considered that the 90 minutes isn't enough to explain what happened in the 13 episodes of the TV series, still, the Major Difference between the Series & the Movie ReaLLY Turned me Off...

Animation... has gone backwards... The Extremely MAgnificent Animation in the TV Series now looks like a movie that had been taken by a webcam... With Not Very Good Quality. & The Character design has good points and bad points. In the TV Series, all the female characters looked like they were the same age as Misuzu because of their face shape. Now the adults look more like adults. But then, the character design has changed, & the characters don't look like how they should be. Yeah, Like Kanna & Ryuya in the past, They don't look like themselves anymore.Even Yukito's Doll has CHANGED?! The Design & Costume is DiFFErenT? & i have to agree with the review which said the Tears looked like miniature Snowballs falling...The animation and Character designs weren't extremely bad, but they weren't very nice either...

Sounds gets a good 7, as it had some nice songs... They were all right with me... Though i have to say, I couldn't get used to the Seiyuus. It's like the Seiyuus have potrayed a different character instead of the characters i've been watching in the TV Series... Well, that is probably the consequence of the story and character being quite different from the storyline...

The Story... Where do i StarT? Firstly, They've Skipped out Most of the Characters, & most of them play background characters or are just characters who happen to be there at the scene.

Then, the Story of the Past. Not intending to spread any spoilers here. But the flashbacks, it might be annoying and boring to some, but it was all right with me. They've Changed it quite a bit. Like how Kanna actually felt and showed her feelings for Ryuya, & Ryuya's reaction, How they went to see Kanna's Mother, & Uraha that Doesn't Play Any ImporTanT Part in Their Lives?! The Story has Changed ToO Much, and if i were faithful to the TV series, I would Extremely Hate this movie. But i'm looking it from the "this-is-another-anime, not-the-tv-series-i've-watched-before" point of view, So I'm found it was amusing and interested at how they've edited the story to this way.

To think the past was twisted enough, The Present Story is Twisted EVEN MORE~! So instead of Misuzu starting off her summer with her wish to make a friend, This time, She starts off her summer in the movie wanting to do a Field Report... *which was never mentioned how it turned out in the end*, and Yukito was in the Movie till the End, never having any connection with Sora, which just merely plays as a friend Misuzu had kept earlier in the year, and Haruko is Different. She's become more Pervert, & in the movie, shows she secretly meets with the Doctor, concerned about Misuzu's illness, when in the TV Series, they've never even tried talking or even "Loving" each other as a parent-child. & also, Misuzu's Famous Quote "Gao" Was Only Said ONCE Throughout the WHOLE MOVIE?! All their Characters have Changed, whether little or not, they have all changed and became different.

With that, I couldn't really enjoy the AIR movie, & it touched me a little bit, Not As Much as AIR TV Did...

So, I conclude my review with this advice. Don't Expect As Much from this Movie, Watch this like as if it's a different Series, and don't keep relating it back to the TV series. That is my advice if you want to Enjoy AIR Movie to its Fullest... Relating it back to how twised the story has become compared AIR TV, you'd most probably hate the movie immediately.

I just thought the movie was okay. not exactly a waste of time, but not exactly really worth my time either...

the original tv series is great its my favourite but This movie really suck , they destroyed the real story of the wonderful anime series that is my favorite , and remade it in another shape that doesn’t have most of the characters and elements that made it special , may be the graphics is a bit better in some points of view , but the character design is changed , better in the face but worse in the clothing , and the music really suck , because they messed a lot with it , and one more thing , the manners that was a main concept in the series are changed to the worst in here making haruko a hentai fool, and misuzu too ,that really destroyed it.

Probably one of my favourite anime movies.

I love the way the scenes are done in this movie. The lighting effects set a majestic atmosphere. It's nothing short of what I expected, it's artistic in some ways. I also like the way the characters are animated in the movie. Different from the way characters by Key look the mouths are not placed as high.

The music and background sounds are good. Often hearing cicadas in the background or a non-vocal version of tori no uta.

The story, I don't know why people complain about the story, it's the same story as the TV series just a bit different, and those differences are not that big an impact especially in an hour and a half. It starts the same way and it ends the same way. It progresses in an alternate way but ultimately the same.

Misuzu is less annoying, Yukito is always cool. Their historical counterparts are pretty much the same as the TV series probably more in love though. Haruko is also always cool. Though we don't get the luxary of seeing all the other characters in the movie as much.

It was free, and I darn have 2 different subs and can't let go of either.

when I rate for enjoyment it's either 10 or 0 so since I am able to watch this movie for than once, it's damn enjoyable especially them fancy lights I'm always seeing, making me feel the summer in the movie.

(NOTE TO READER: If you happen to read this review, whether in-full, or just a skim, please rate the review. I will appreciate the feedback, negative or positive, and will return the gesture if you have made your own review.)

To begin with, I was vastly disappointed by the AIR TV series, and had not even planned on watching this movie. I did so at the request of a friend who greatly enjoyed both the movie, and TV series, and they promised me that the movie would deliver, where the series fell short.

Animation:

The movie takes a step backward here. The characters have overly bugged eyes, and everything seems to move in slow motion.

The artwork itself is good, characters seem more lifelike, and have more believable features. However, they lack the fluidity of their TV series counterparts.

The scene between Keiichi, Haruko and Misuzu toward the end is just appalling. The atmosphere is killed completely by the animation in this portion. Haruko`s eyes just bob awkwardly, and her tears resemble miniature snowballs.

The flashback sequences are enough to drive one crazy. Everything constantly moves in slow motion, and the sakura leaves always seem to be blowing around. Dramatic effect is fine, but geez, I guess feudal Japan must have been pretty damned windy.

Gekijouban certainly doesn`t look bad, not at all. It just isn`t the ambitious attempt that the TV series had.

Sound:

Reusing the old Intro and Ending themes from the original was a great idea. It seems the new director: Dezaki Osamu knew a cash horse when he saw it.

When one hear`s the sounds of these ridiculous grunting drummers, one wants to put one`s fist through his computer monitor. Please, just shut the hell up, already, we get it, you`re festive, you`re angry, great, just shut up. Don`t even get me started on Sora. (the crow)

Tomoko Kawakami gives Misuzu her same child-like sound, but does so in a way that doesn`t make you want to punch her everytime you hear "Yukito-san", (which is substantially less in the movie) while Yukito gains a few bits of dynamic flare. As he performs his doll charade, he gets into his act, and shifts his voice to try and keep the attention of the children, and that was amusing. Aya Hisakawa played her comic relief role just swimmingly, but seemed somehow less authentic in the dramatic portions. (Perhaps it was due to that horrendous animation)

Story:

"Thus, the reason why I disembarked at this town...was simply by coincidence. There was no reason at all." It seems that fate plays quite a role in this world.

It`s not hard to understand the irony they`re using to impose their tragedy. Misuzu is reading the story of Kanna-hime, and is in some ways, reliving the exact same events. The question is: Why? Alot of things in the world of Gekijouban don`t seem to make alot of sense.

What exactly is Misuzu`s illness? Is it the curse from the story? Is the story she`s reading a history book, or a work of fiction? If it is history, how are she and Kanna related? If not, what is she doing with wings, anyway? It`s like the dots are there, but they lack connectivity.

The good news here, is that the story is paced relatively well, and it has a great ending. We`re introduced to our characters, get to know a bit about them, become aware of their plight, and then we have a beautiful and touching ending.

Character:

Well, what do you know, as it turns out this time around, our narrator Yukito Kunisaki, will actually fulfill his role as the main character.

Misuzu is actually accurately portrayed as an innocent schoolgirl in this film. Her feelings for Yukito grew unreasonably fast, but doesn`t every young girls? Her pain is real, and you empathise strongly with it.

Yukito is still boring. As a character, he is just so translucent, and he just screams of apathy. However, he really serves a purpose this time around, because he`s genuinely connected to Misuzu. He actually quite entertains the crowds with his puppeteering trick, and seems to be much more skillful at it.

The flashbacks containing Ryuuha, Uruha, and Kanna`s characters are luckily the more lame and pointless portions of the movie. (I say this, because they truly stole the show straight away from the main cast of the TV series) They exist solely inside a story that Misuzu is reading.

Value:

Gekijouban offers the chance to engross yourself into the world of AIR, without having to sit through the plethora of filler used to comprise the majority of the episode list of the TV series. This, in itself, is enough reason to watch this movie.

AIR had vast amounts of potential. Trimming up the cast and taking away the TV series ability to blindside you with a total and ridiculous story arc, make this the indisputable choice, of which to watch; The movie, or the show.

Normally I wouldn`t allow myself to make so many TV series-Movie comparisons, as this is a review of the movie, and not the show. However, this is the only way I can justify giving such higher scores to most of the categories of the movie.

I can`t lie though, as much as I disliked the show, I was ready to tear this movie apart as a supplement to my other review.

However, Gekijouban did something that AIR failed to. It moved me, even if only a little. Here, we have something that the original lacked: Actual Romance. The same god-awful dialogue is in this one, but at least it`s a shorter trip this time around.

A slightly moving and bittersweet short story about ironic and tragic love.

Air Movie is an alternate story to the masterfully done Air series by KyoAni, but falls nothing short of being a total disappointment when compared to its hugely successful predecessor.

The animation, when compared with the TV series by KyoAni, is nothing short of awful. Plenty of scenes lack detail and colour, some backgrounds lack animation, and some scenes turned out to be too bright in an attempt to hide the lack of detail. As a stand alone anime, the animation is, I suppose, what one would expect from an anime with a fully hand drawn look to it.

The music are the same beautiful tracks from the TV series. However, the animation is what lets this anime down in the sound department, as some voices don't fit in with the characters as well as the series did due to the redrawing of everything.

This alternative story in the movie makes slightly more sense than the anime, not because it is set out better, but because it is simplified and lacks characters, hence subplots, which was what made the series less enjoyable. It's changed from a drama to more of a tragic love romance, as bad move in my opinion, as it is much too common and uninteresting scenario, offering nothing new in the genre.

The personalities of the characters sometimes don't seem right, probably due to the animation. They are certainly different from the series, and some even contradict their anime counterpart as their personalities have been simplified to fit in a the 90 minute time slot.

Overall, I found the movie to be a disappointment compared to the series. It falls short in every department, and is nowhere near as enjoyable to watch. KyoAni should have made this movie, which would have greatly improved the quality of the animation, if not more. I didn't find Air the Movie to be a must watch for Air fans, as it doesn't tell the viewer anything new. It's just a modded version of the series, which I found to be quite lacking.

There is really nothing wrong with Air movie. Only that it is an alternative version to the 13 ep anime, it feels slightly rushed, and some things are not explored much due to the time constraints.

First of all; this is not a sequel nor a flashback story about kanna. This is a whole new alternative plot to the tv series.

Air Movie summary everything in short time. The story make sense but isn't perfect either. Actually both tv and movie plot got their good point and bad point. This time they focus on romance between Misuzu and Yukito, taking higher step to be a serious drama than just a simeple sad anime.

Overall, it's a nice summary to watch and you gotta see more character development between the main char. Really interesting how they change the plot around and still get away with it.

This movie adaptation of Air puts more emphasis on the relationship of Misuzu and Yukito in comparison to the past relationship between Kanna and Ryuuga setting aside the secondary character stories which were present in both the video game and TV series. Despite being 90 minutes long, the movie is able to decently compress the plot and character development of the elements from the Air video game which focus on Yukito and Misuzu.

The personalities of the main characters in the movie are a little different than their TV counterparts. Yukito acts a little more uncertain of himself and is a little less confident than his TV show counterpart. Misuzu acts less childish and Haruko is a bit more giddy shown through her humorous interactions with Yukito.

Animation wise, the character designs and settings were drawn very well. However, the movie animators had to use the sun glaring effects a bit too often in this movie which annoyed me quite a bit. Soundwise, the movie retains the intro and outro musics used in both the TV show and video game. However in comparison to the TV show, the music, while decent, lacks the emotional punch that it gave in the TV show. The seiyuu in Air was pretty decent as the voices for Misuzu and Yukito could adapt well to their slightly altered personalities.

Overall, I'd say that I prefer the TV show adaptation of Air over this movie. But, I liked how this movie put more depth into Misuzu and Yukito's relationship with it's alternative take on the storyline. While the movie lacks the emotional punch of the TV show, the Air movie is still worth checking out if you had wished for the show to put more emphasis on Yukito and Misuzu's relationship.

Loved the TV series, but this felt like a cheap soap opera. Only see it if you loved the TV series or game.

(Haven't played the game, but I'm told the TV series is faithful to it.)

An alternate telling of AIR story, more compact, more beautiful, but is it better than the TV series?

Inconclusive is the answer, whilst I had mixed feelings about the TV series, I had mixed feelings about this movie too. I just felt there was something lacking.

What’s lacking could well be the sudden blossom in Yukito and Misuzu’s (lead male and female respectively) relationship. It felt as if their bond came out of nowhere in this movie, and hence their struggle and sadness are not fully empathised with.

Also, there is insufficient explanation given to the audience about Misuzu’s illness. Sure, the movie gave a clear background into the story about the winged beings, but the question of why she is the one getting the illness is a real bugging question.

It's funny, because many things that I didn't like about the TV series has been changed, for example, the characters are much fewer and the story is much more concentrated as a result. However I still didn't like AIR as much I thought I would - which raised the question of whether it's because I just don't like the story.
In short, animation is better then the TV series, although the blinding scenes may not be to everyone’s taste. Music and sound aren’t as good, especially the use of musical scores. Character design is much more improved on.

Watch it if you liked AIR TV, don’t bother if you didn’t unless you are really interested in finding out a little more into the whole story.

When I finally got to watch the TV series after its many months, even years of hype, I was hard pressed to write any review of it, cause to this day I find it difficult to understand the story completely. I am a big fan of h-game animes also. Most everyone I talked to who loved it the most had played the game. However, the movie is a totally different animal. It focuses solely on three characters, decreases the summar arc to a backdrop role and focuses on a more conventional romance renai-type story involving the main characters. ITs basically a truncated version of AIR TV, with less characters, and a more romantic element vs "fate" element.

Long story made short, I LOVED this movie...it has everything I expected, minus the massive game compression of the TV series. You can watch the movie without even knowing or watching the TV series and really enjoy it. I love the "Dreams come true" theme which plays towards the end of the movie. What you lose in faithfulness to the original game, you gain in broader spectrum enjoyment for anyone who appreciates a well told and well executed love story.

I haven't seen the TV series or anything related. I watched it for no other reason then because it was available. Didn't expect much out of this anime, and I wasn't disappointed.
The only thing I can say was the animation was quite good. Everything else was not so good.
The story and character development (what little of it there was) was so rushed that I couldn't feel anything for the characters. Misuzu, I thought was kind of lame and childish, Yukito, I thought just plain lame. The only character I had the slightest interest was Haruko and even then her character still needs more development. Overall, rushed story/character development (again, what little of it there was)in a 90 minutes format. If you like the TV series you will probably enjoyed this anime movie.

AIR movie was one of my most awaited anime I've ever watched after the affection of the TV version released earlier.

It is not the sequel of the well known AIR TV, but it is a short review about Misuzu's story. However it has been slightly changed and many important thing is ommited.

I think most people that watched it are too disappointed to bother writing a review. Because the number of reviews as of this date is only 10 and the movie has been out for a while, not to mention lots of people watched Air TV.

I myself was extremely disappointed. This movie is pointless, ugly and felt experimental. I think the director has a very skewed vision of what the Air story is about. And he either did a terrible job telling it, or he needs to learn how to direct a movie.

With questionable animation, random scenes of retardation, and a story that probably wouldn't have made any sense if you haven't seen Air TV, we've got ourselves a real failure in my opinion.

this anime is nothing like the Air TV it has some similarities like the ending where Mizuzu wants to reach her goal and some of the story about the past but i cant say that it is a recap or a summery of the anime. Although a movie has a limited time to show as much as it can i think that it wasnt the greatest done. for me it lacked something that the series had. i still enjoyed this anime. but it never made me cry like the series did.
Air TV is the only anime to leave me in tears. But another thing i liked about the movie is that there was a better relation between the past and present

overall i say its still a good movie to watch before watching the series

The Air movie was something that I felt was made into this story so right, yet I do not know if this movie was worth producing. The story was made into an alternate version from the TV series; moreover making it more in-depth with Yukihito and Misuzu's role. Almost everything in the past events that took place in the TV series were completely changed, and all of the side characters were not involved anywhere that it made itself too similar. During the festival, there was one scene I was glad to see when Yukihito finally met the father of Misuzu. The ending was little better than I expected it to be. Nothing much that is new here, just something was slightly redecorated; even for those who haven't watched the TV version.
