the show has one major story that it sticks to throughout all 78 episodes with a culminating climax. This gives it points in the captivating story department. (although the story isn't the most thought provoking one, unless you want to be a (world) leader someday).
I am not an expert in animation, but they rarely (practically never) resort to noticeablely cheap animation techniques. such as showing people backs while having them talk. There is also nice camera work.
The music is slightly repetitive, but they have distinct (and fitting) tunes for different scenes. The sound effects are also fitting to the visuals.
Many of the characters are sorta similar in some senses. However the main ones all have distinct and thoroughly developed personalities. One may get to feel as if they know the characters.
The quality of the AonE and Ani-Kraze fansubs that I watched were good. (from my limited japanese, I could tell that they didn't mess up on some of the basics...). They took the time to explain things that may not be clear to those unfamiliar with japanese culture etc... The rewatch value is good because of a surprising ending, so one may want to go back and look at all the pointers.
The enjoyment value good... but this is pretty much my oppinion.

Well this was the first shounen-ai genre series that I ever looked at. My first impression was that this series was really funny and that it seemed to be a parody of fanservice anime.

That said one has to keep in mind that the show really is a comedy and does not seem to take itself seriously at all. There are some serious moments which serve to advance the very thin plot but those are few and far between.

I have seen 68 episodes of this series and I plan to stick around for all 78.
I really enjoy looking at the show and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to lhave a few laughs and does not mind hints of shounen-ai.

The humour is in my opinion unique and original. Yes it is a cliched alternative dimension type of story but there is a very unique way for our protagonist to get into the world of the Mazoku, he travels via magic and water. Thus in the first episode he gets flushed down the girls toilet, how embarrassing and funny!

Then our por hero finds himself bound to a group of bishounen nobles and their alluring mother by quirky and obscure traditions. In other words a funny comedy of errors.

Then why didn't I give the show a higher rating you ask? I am just trying to be as objective as possible and I will explain my scoring.

The animation looks great and all the characters are beautifully drawn. The bishounen are simply gorgeous and you can't help but look at them and admire their good looks. Movement though seems to be a problem for the animators. Face shots and scenic views are well done but when full body shots are used characters walk and run very jerkily, enough that yo must notice.

The music is excellent and I think the timing for the sounds are just close to prefect.

The characters are unevenly developed though and this is really a problem as you learn more about the top official spy than Wolfram who is supposed to be Yuuri's fiance!

Plot, I almost have to say what plot but that wold not be fair.

For the first 8 episodes or so the story was the same yuuri appeared in a pubble of water and he did some stuff, usually funny stuff, and then he swirled back down that puddle of water. Fortunately just as it became monotonous he got stuck in the Mazoku world and a bit of character development and plot took place. This is the pattern of the rest of the series until about episode 40 or so where a major PLOT line is introduced and it still lingers until episode 66 or so. Now however, hints of a complicated plot development have benn introduced to keep you interested in how the series will turn out. So though the plot is thin it is there and it is timed to pick up whenever the average fan might be thinking of getting restless with fillers and such.

Unfortunately, the one thing that I do not like about this series at all is the character of Yuuri, our hero and Maou. To sum it up he is naive to a fault and he believes in turning the other cheek and forgiveness and looking at the bright side. He sees the good in everyone and abhors violence and conflict. This sounds altruistic and fine as qualities to have but not in situations of survival and betrayal. Not to mention that his followers have to go along with suggestions of peacemongering at the risk of their and others' lives. (It was the same thing I disliked about Gundam wing and Peacecraft!)

All in all I hope that you will watch Kyou Kara Maou and enjoy it as much as I did. Just don't expect anythin too serious and enjoy the aughs and the eye candy.

Based on 65 episodes:

Don't let the critques stop you from watching the entire thing, I haven't yet, but I will be soon, after all, I did managed to watched it throughly up to 65 and more when the rest are complete and distributed.

---------

Animation: It's not the best, but it is good in some ways, but I really liked how the magical effects and the fighting can be, it's usually not a repetitive battle, but how they act in it is. Like, sword fighting isn't always the same as how they would fight, but how they use their sword fighting skills for a reason is to simply protect their Majesty, which is the obivous.

In my opinion, I believe this anime is a great hit, it's very good and I really liked it. Firstly, because it's shounen-ai, but I hardly watch them, so there gives a reason why I'm so addicted to this particular animation.

In most of the scenes, the characters are well drawn, it's usually good looking and accurated, which I like.

Sound: I am in love with the opening and the ending, either way, they are very good to my ears. Honestly, I do not favor the ROCK genre, whether it's english or japanese I still have the same opinion on just the standard ROCK, I don't like them, but this song really got to me and it just made me want to listen to it until I fall asleep.

The second ending theme is so cute and awesome, I really want to find that song, I don't know where to start, or is it because I'm too lazy to? Heh..

Story: The story so far is about an average japanese boy who gets punished by bullies after trying to protect one of his classmates, by getting his head flushed down into the toilet and it ends up into an alternate world of magic and a medieval atmosphere. It's quite odd that by numerous of years, humans should be able to develop just as fast the ones on Earth. I must say that they are rather strict to their old traditional standings, I cannot agree to this. However, to create a consenus with myself, gay marriages are openly welcomed in that world, also it's not.. a rare thing to happen, which really made me happy. :) ...

After Yuuri's incident with the toilet flushing him down into another world becoming the 27th Demon King, there is no real story until the 28th episode or so, when they are assigned to bring and find all of the four forbidden boxes that were created by the original king himself to seal the dark evil powers from his once greatest enemy. Sounds dramatic, but yeah, whatever.

Then, it has it's moments of fillers and small impressions of shounen-ai, which is delightably comforting. :D ... Ah, how I love WolframXYuuri XD ... Don't get me wrong, but I really encourage their marriage proposal +__+;; I really want to see an episode of them getting married... with Greta as the flower girl, that would really make me blush and go fangirl-mode on them...

Characters: Lovable, good, and naive king yuuri. With all due respect, he may not be the greatest, but he really gotten into other people's hearts and bringing a lot of trust to others, creating a much more... peaceful and warming place to live.

Selfish, ignorant, and a big selfish pooh, Wolfram had been decided to love and protect Yuuri with all of his heart and passion. I loved that one episode when they were in a blizzard, so they took sheltered in a cave and he told Yuuri a legend how that if you give skin contact with one and the other you'll be warmer (not a brainer). Obviously, it's no legend.

Conrad is such a sweet guy, but rather secretive. Who knows what he's plotting next.

Gwendal, the lover of all cute things, he knits and collects anything that is cute whenever he can grasp it into his hands. How old is he? What? From his physical appearance, he looks like he's over 40. Still, he has the body of a hunk. It really gives the impression that he's still young and capable of being in the front lines of war. I love how he gets tortured by the feminist Aniissina.

Gunter is... uh... obsessed... with His Majesty... it freaks me out a bit.., but he doesn't conceive me that he really likes him. Like the moment he laid his eyes on him, from that moment, he fell in love with His Majesty, never a moment to spare WHY he likes him in the first place. It's a naive love interest, I don't understand why he should be falling for
Yuuri... They never had a personal 'moment' with each other, or do get the time to get to know each other. Hardly any character development in that department.

Lastly but not least, the weak and cowardly Murata. He's the Great Sage with superior wisdom and knowledge. He rememebers everything from his past and is able to communicate with his old friend, the Original King. He is rather a pervert who loves women. What is embarrassing was that the first time you see him with blonde hair and blue eyes and... an army.. spantanx..?? (the brief version for swiming.. I can't remember how to spell the word) Ughh... I can't remove that image from my head... Also, he's really calm and quite the thinker. He sounds very innocent, and... nerdy, too.

Value: 10/10

Enjoyment: I really, really, really, really, enjoyed this series!! I WANT MORE, and I want more pictures of the series, and I want to see doushijins or fan books, or draw a fanbook of wolframxyuuri... and and and and.... I'm really obsessed with this anime.. :\

If Fushigi Yuugi is a parallel-dimension anime based romance and Juuni Kokki is a self-finding and political-drama anime, Kyou Kara no Maou is a slight comedy, shonenai fantasy parallel-dimension anime. In other words fun at times but potentially long, drawn out and boring. What separates this from the two animes mentioned above is the mood. There is a real lack of seriousness throughout due to a crappy main character. Although there aren't any sudden transformations into chibi-mode to express awkwardness, everything is really silly i.e. through the weird traditions of the Demon Tribe, Gunter's odd composure, Wolfram and Yuri's love scenes etc..

This anime is kind of fun and I'm sure there will be a suitable audience that loves it. It is pretty well made with few shortcuts in presentation. There is a pretty strong background of what Yuri has to do in this parallel dimension and what he learns transforms his life in his home dimension. In the end, Kyou Kara Maou can be summarized as a growing up adventure anime for 15 year old boys. As he learns how to deal with various situations on his travels, he becomes more responsible, open, and confident.

What turned me off to this anime is how I dislike Yuri's base personality. I hate how he is such a peace maker without much reasoning behind it. He's absolutely stubborn in this aspect. Some people have a mindless obsession to war and violence, Yuri has a mindless obsession towards having everything work out between people and this bothers me a lot. Furthermore, he really is a teenager... He is impulsive, acts on instinct, emotional and does all the other rebellious stuff that kids do. He might not be angsty, but he is really defensive.

In the end, this anime is kind of fun to watch at times but each episode remains the same. Experiencing a new parallel world often brings about such feelings. There is not much drive to this anime though because of the randomly interspersed humor scenes. Furthermore, if you dislike Shonen Ai behavior, then steer clear since they spend a lot of time just putting random bath scenes, pretty boy scenes in each episode. Not the best parallel world anime in the world, but can be entertaining. Watch the first few episodes, if the pacing suits you then go ahead and watch to the end. But you won't miss out on much if you don't watch this.

I really love this series. Although I must say that it's light in storyline and has several episodes long arcs. But the episodic episodes where the characters' background or past are told, really make up for it.

The shounen-ai element in KKM is nothing to be afraid of, unlike Loveless and Sukisyo. You can only guess since Yuuri swings both way (he blushes at women frequently and at a time he said that he prefer to go out with girls).

The animation is pretty poor at first but after 39 episodes, it gets a little better and crisper, the story also gets interesting and there are more revelations.

But what I enjoy most of this anime are the twist. The weird culture of Shin Makoku like their way of proposing etc.

This is one of those animes that can make you laugh, worth a watch.

Like fushigi yuugi but...miaka is a guy! therefore, it is filled with shounen-ai undertones, but it is hilariously done. the interactions between the characters is what makes this a great series. each character has an unique personality that makes you a fan of everyone. unlike fushigi yuugi, there are not many dark spots.

funny, light hearted fantasy at its best

Highly amusing. I tend to download more anime than I watch. I usually only watch the first episode before deciding if the anime is worth keeping, and then wait to download the rest of the series before I start watching. The first episode of Kyou Kara Maou, was sorta iffy, funny but nothing spectacular. Unsure, I watched the second episode and haven't been able to miss an episode since.

This anime's purpose is to make fun of all the cliches that seem to occur in the fantasy animes.
1. Love interest - All the girls were sold out so it's a boy this time, don't worry he's pretty enough
2. Dragons - Mean evil .... I mean cute and cuddly...
3. Killer Sword - I shall kill you all! as soon as i finish having indigestion
4. Salvation - He's come to save us from the demons! erk.... Humans.... I mean humans

It has some of your slapstick comedy, but a lot of the humor is more subtle, and can be more appreciated. Don't try to take this anime seriously, you'll end up bored out of your wits.

I'm no expert reviewer, I'll say that upfront...

However, Overall I'd give this anime a 9. It could have done a little better musically. The sound effects were pretty good though.

The characters are well thought out and executed, and the voice acting is quite good. The animation may not be exceptional, but overall between drawing, character design and execution, and voice acting I was completely drawn into "their" world within the first ten episodes or so.

It's plotline can be... sparse at times, but this isn't an anime you can miss an episode of and not notice. That is something sadly missing from too many anime of the "comedy/romantic comedy" genres.

There is some mild shounen-ai content... mostly implied. It definitely adds humor, but I'm not going to complain about it. I've been waiting for an anime just of this type.

The Bishounen animes out there usually are more of an "eye candy" sort, but this one is eye -and- brain candy.

This definitely belongs on a "must watch list" if you're tired of the boring old shujo animes.

I bet everybody agrees that the animation is nothing special ,not to par to the new animes ,kedo/but not annoying to me, for most of it.

Sound is well done, I mean the background music .They stayed with classical orchestra type soundtrack and one particular silly background for the silly moments.
Story wise, the plot gets really interesting at the later episodes. The mild shonen-ai element is really hilarious which makes this anime fun to watch. And I like shonen-ai genre.
The shounen ai is really sweet.A lot of hugging.

The characters are developing slowly at the begining but it gets really deep with emotion especially on the latter episodes.
I really enjoy watching this anime and I cant wait for the second season.
5/26
Well I got hold of the first english dubbed version. I am not very disappointed at all but I was hoping Gwendal's voice was a bit deeper and Yuuri's voice would mature up more when he becomes the demon King/Mauo...but man Wolfram's voice is excellent and so is Conrad. Even the sexy Queen's voice over is pretty good as well as the Mom,Gunther's voice is not bad at all.Geneon does an excellent job in matching the voices and the translation is so close to the fansub translation.
It made the watching experience as fun as watching the first time in Japanese .
I really enjoy this anime.Thank goodness for Geneon.
Geneon can I work for you...:)

Based on series up through episode 39.

Understandably under-rated, this anime deserves a second - or third - look.

KKM _is_ a simple genre anime. It's very much in the 'Escaflowne' camp. Only this time, it's not your typical magic girl [shojou mahaou] show - it's a 'magic boy' show.

The first few episodes aren't really that impressive - the animation is sub-par, the plot is 'been there, done that' [with a few exceptions] and there is a very light shounen-ai side-story that adds a bit of needed humor.

But slowly, gradually, the show starts to pick up. The animation quality improves. The characters become more fully developed, and less 'standard' ... and the plot develops the political intrigue of the story. The humor also gets better, and the show becomes much more enjoyable.

Like so many anime [and in contrast to so many western & american "cartoons"] KMM becomes really fun to watch because you get a feeling you know the characters, and their reactions to the events around them - sometimes cliched, I have to admit - are entertaining, endearing and often surprising.

It doesn't help KKMs popularity that the show is only available via sporadic fansub, with about 5-6 episodes coming out all at once every couiple of months. But the fansub translation and quality IS very good, so it's worth the wait.

"Review based on 39 eps as completed season 1 based on Anidb.net"

KKM is quite refreshing, quite enjoyable, there is nothing that is this quite enjoyable. Its more of bishonen anime, and both boys and girls can really enjoy this. Its full of comedy and the story is quite light thus making it trully enjoyable. KKM is like 12 kokuki without the seriousness of it. There is some yaoi in this, but it will not offend and makes a great laugh.

Heh. Heheh. Nof for something refreshingly different. "A comedy show in episode packets", and truly, there is no continuous story from EP1 to EPlast, but small story arches. Video-game-level-like story blocks of up to 4 episodes, easy to follow and perfect to watch once you own the DVD: 4 episodes, appx. 90 min of comedy entertainment per day ;-).

(Review written after the first ten episodes, and after hearing that a plot has still not yet developed within 31. Shame.)

I like to analogize Kyou Kara Maoh's success and quality as a series to a rather amusing incident. On an anime message board I frequent, this show began to receive some running popularity among many of the members, myself included. As the episodes wore on, however, interest soon began to drop off. When 28 was released, one member inquired "How long is this series going to be?" and one dug up a source revealing this anime to be a 52-episode series. Now there are about three people on the boards who actually watch it. You can see a similar parallel here on the animenfo review page as well, with many of the reviews being concentrated in the second half of 2004, when the series was still in its prime.
(Edit: Some other sources say it's only 39. I still don't know for sure. Whatever; it's still too much.)

What does this tell us about Kyou Kara Maoh? Well, it's good in small doses...but after a while it simply becomes numbing. I started out really enjoying the series for the first few episodes, but then it hit me. Everything I was watching was the same as the episode that preceded it. Wacky shonen-ai antics, a sword belching fire, and the cast running around and doing near nothing. The only story that this anime had put in front of me was that this sword had special powers that only the Maoh, prince of demons and ruler of a kingdom, could truly realize. Yuuri, having accidentally fallen into the position of Maoh-hood, putzes around with the sword and naturally has instant success with it. And there you have all the storyline that the anime put in front of me within the ten episodes I watched.

I would have finished this anime, I think, if it were only 26 episodes. 39 episodes of hijinky filler is just too much for me to bear. Not to say I didn't enjoy it, but when it comes in such gigantic droves, things become unbearable for me. Let's allude to Monster, a series twice as long as this one at 78 episodes, to prove this point. Within just two episodes, Monster's plot becomes wildly engrossing and puts its point down right for us to see. We are taken through the series with just the right delivery and suspense level, and it manages to backdrop this within only two episodes. And though Monster has its episodic tendencies, they are always to develop Tenma or another character's personality; Kyou Kara Maoh bats around filler simply for the sake of padding the series. And I outright refuse to watch 39 episodes of that. Even Full Moon Wo Sagashite, a 52-episode series notorious for being slow to pick up, got to the point faster than KKM.

The humor in KKM is pretty good, chock full of shonen-ai subtext and bizarre situations for our main character to be thrust into. Portal toilets, anyone? When the anime tries to introduce drama, however, it's simply too hard to take seriously...and especially when such an out-there cast of characters is entangled in it. The viewer gets only one 'serious' character who has no bearing on the comic relief and is used for plot purposes...but unfortunately, he's a very dull character. Every other character fulfills a purpose for the anime's humor, and their parts in the serious sections just sink away into limbo.

The anime does look nice, though. Very nice indeed. It sounds decent too, though the OP and ED are fairly generic J-pop-rock themes and the background music is none too interesting. A lot of aesthetic effort was put into this, and given the amount of episodes they had to stretch it over they did a very consistent job.

But that's where the consistency ends, unfortunately. Humor and action melds can work, but they have to find the right balance. This concentrates FAR too hard on the humor and subsequently this leaves the drama/action incredibly lopsided. Unless you're looking for what looks to be 39 episodes of hollow comic relief, I'm not about to recommend Kyou Kara Maoh. Or at least anything past episode 10. :D

This shounen-ai anime is really funny and the characters make it worthwhile to watch but one thing that irks me about this anime is that it has almost no plot. I used to love it from the beginning but now as we are getting to the 30th ep..it's starting to wear me out....if you want to have a good laugh and you're a fan of shounen-ai and cute bishonens..then go for it.

or else if you want character development and a good plot...don't bother

This is absolutely one of my favorite anime. I rabidly watch for the new episodes to come out. The characters are all vibrant and lovable, and the anime itself is brilliant. It's hilarious, extremely self-aware, and makes constant references to RPGs and to anime. Plus, it's filled with subtle and not-so-subtle hints at shonen-ai.

Kyaaaaah. Pretty mediocre in technical aspects...not really spectacular in much...but if you like a bit of fantasy tucked under comedy tucked into an overwhelming...*randomness*, this just might work out.

Good enough, but nothing spectacular...certainly not something I'd expect to be licensed, but evidently, it has been.

Oddly alluring...However, your mileage may vary.

I totally enjoy this anime! It's filled with bishounen, the characters are totally cliche but I still love them, plus there's no point in the story (what is the story anyways?) except to make the characters look cool, and the humor is great! The opening song is cool, and the music is a little out of the ordinary.

Avoid this anime if you look for a nice or epic story, and deep character development, but go for it if you want a good laugh! The Maou kicks ass all the way!

This is not a yaoi anime, even though there is a manly cutie couple, but so far, they've not even touched each other. It's simply humor, for those afraid of such innuendo....... Frankly, I've seen much, much worse fan service out there...

I was looking forward to this anime because I looked at the voice cast and was excited about all the lovely seiyuu... But really, this anime was quite disappointing. It's basically lots of gag scenes and nothing serious really develops. Well, I guess I still watch it for the bishounen... but there's really nothing else to it.
