Melody of Oblivion was a slightly weird anime, but it still was an excellent anime.

It shows us the world after the Monsters win a great war between Human and themselves. The monsters agree to not kill all the humans if the humans just obey a few rules. The main ones would be child sacrifices and obeying the monsters. Most of the world thinks it a small price to pay to keep the Monster Union happy.

Bocca, the main character finds he has the power to fight back against the monster union. It is just almost no one wants him to fight and they are just content in obeying the monster. The anime isn’t for everyone, but it is definitely a must try anime.

After thinking long and hard about this, I have changed my rating. Why? I highly discourage any one to see this anime unless you like a story full of pointless sexual innuendos that has nothing to do with the plot or character development.

Animation: I was first drawn to this anime by the art and its promising beginning. It has very nicely drawn characters, and although Bokka seems rather feminine (it took me 3 episodes to confirm he's a male), the settings and Monsters are all nicely drawn.

Sound: I really like the opening and ending song, but other than that, there's not much.

Story: It had a promising beginning: a young man about to embark on a perilous journey to fight evil. Sounds mediocre, but I like it. Okay, so what went wrong? First episode, there was a mention of boobs. Second to fifth episodes, the woman wants to have sex with him. Then, there are girls dressed as cows being milked. Does anyone else sense something out of order? It doesn't even follow the storyline. It is so random, so pointless, and completely unwanted. The main plot is obscured behind these ecchi-ness. I simply hate the last couple episodes. *shudder* Why did I even watch this? It is even worse than the worst anime I've seen. However, I thought the plot that were able to squeeze through were very well thought out and has a sense of weirdness that creeps up on your spine. I like that if another scene didn't shift to the girl drawing her arrows on her thigh.

Character: No apparent character development. Sure, they blush; they fly; they save damsels in distress. There really isn't much after that. Bokku gets stronger, which is a plus, but nothing's gained in the end besides the audience thinking more perverted thoughts than they were in the beginning.

Enjoyment: Simply, I hated it. It is another one of those pointless anime I think they should discard into the trashcan and not waste people's time. I was hopeful in the beginning, hoping that the story will evolve and change for the better as it progressed, but it never did.

It now stands as the worst anime I have seen. Compared to this, DBZ and Yu-Gi-Oh actually are more tempting to watch.

An excellent anime overall. It captivates you all the way through (I watched it in one sitting).

Like other reviewers said, the ending is it's weakest point... I feel that if they added even 2 more episodes I would give the story a 10 instead of 8. Another little complaint about the story is that the third arc (the rats one) is too similar to the second arc, and might get a little boring, but this is remedied by the plot after the second arc, which is brilliantly done, well, before the hasty ending. The ending also has a high WTF factor... a side effect of cramming too much stuff into 4 episodes.

Sound is excellent in this anime, not only is the op very catchy, the background music is also very well done.

An anime very worth your time.

I must say, I don't agree with some of the less charitable reviews of this anime. I thought it was excellent the whole way through, especially the animation and music. Truly, the hasty ending was its weakest point. If they had taken a little bit longer, maybe added five more episodes to explain everything fully, it could have been truly great.

For the first 15 episodes i thought this was the most promising anime ive seen in a while. After that it spiraled downhill so fast it almost disgusted me. At a certain point they decided to introduce characters with no development. Then the story goes out of control and i can't follow the plot anymore. The animation is impressive and and with the music it became very classy. Like i said the ending was crud... They had like a human dairy farm ~_~... The fighting was awesome. I guess i would have scored it higher if i missed the last two eps. enough said. I wouldn't highly recommend it, but fair. This is the kind of thing you might want to watch an episode a week of. GL i wouldn't buy it though...

As has been said before, this anime started out promisingly. The story picked up speed at a good rate, and the characters seemed likeable enough. But the weirdness also picked up speed, and it soon left the story (and the audience) in the dust. At the end, I was just incredibly confused and embarrassed by the strange and ecchi-ful images flashing by.

its a GAINAX. i think that summes it up. and just like any gainax it has ALOT of weak points but all in all is worth the effort. first id like to state that i hate fanservice and there for despised the whole of ep23, i had an extreme urge to delete the show every time koko (the blue/gren haired girl) invoked her errow. however the show, all in all, was great. the sound track was superb, amasing violin music al along the show that realy make the "heroism" of bocca and his epic tale stand out. another thing is the backround paintings, all drawn to resemble oil paintings and all amasingly expressive. i just loved bocca`s home town, and the maze ^_^. the story was odd, kinda cheezy, kinda funny. if u wanna search for deapth and meaning, suit your selves, i think its was just good. no animal/human relations thingy, though i might be wrong.
all in all this show is worth while for ppl who like the eccentric GAINAX style. all the rest should dave thier bandwidth for somthing more coherent

The best thing out of this series is its music, and even that isn't good.
The story at first was not bad, but seemed similar to Ragnarok the Animation where they go from city to city. The episodes before the last episode were complete crap. Horrible and useless attempts at being ecchi. It's funny how the initials of this series in English is the same thing that those girls being milked say O.o (MoO). Some parts of this series were interesting, like the idea of that "maze" with the distorted time. The last episode was the best because it ends this series, and maybe because it gave us an interesting perspective of their world through the Monster King's eyes.

Melody of Oblivion (MoO) is suppose to be good-and a copycat of Gatekeepers, but then the story is uninspired, excessive music in scenes, and lots and lots of repetition on this anime-almost 50% entire anime is repetition. Minus all the repetition, this anime is only for 6-13eps max. Really it is slightly worse than normal hentai, and in some way it tries to depict ecchi, which is quite obvious more towards hentai. Sometimes it feels like it tries to become a horror story, but then it just bores you as its not horrific, its more of bizzare, and clearly looks like this anime is budget constrained.

This is a most interesting watch. This feels like a classy horror show at first. But ultimately, I find it to be a work of art that allows a few angle of perception.

There's a noticeable amount of fanservice and suggestive themes that kinda marrs this series to a certain degree.
But, I feel that the fanservice near the end has meaningful implications to the world of the Melody of Oblivion.

Read more here after you watched it to maximise the meaning of the series. Please note that the following are based on my perception and imagination.

The animation is pretty good, such as the graphics at the beginning. Also the animation at the end, where they are trying to make the last few episodes look like a play inside a Theater, which could be a metaphore that that is the theater they been looking for. The opening and closing music are pretty good, but i didn't enjoyed the kareeky music that Child Dragon was singing. Also I found Sayako's voice to be really annoying. I should she would talk a little bit less.

The story is quiet simple, which is about "warriors" trying to defeat "monsters", but it doesn't matter how many monsters they kill or defeat humans can never win. The basic idea is that if you kill all the monsters, the humans themselves will become monsters too for different reason, such as why do people try to become Monster Union Agents, such as in some cases to be accepted or envy. I have to say that the ending chould been better.

Also the characters were pretty good developed, even Sayako (but i still don't like her). Sayajo is the way she is because of her family and how she was treated. The reason why she liked Kurofune is because he was the first person that actually cared or saved her, until she met Bocca. The character I like most is Coco because she is so cheerful and funny.

Overall, I enjoyed watching this anime but i really have to say that the ending could been better. I recommend this anime to people who liked stuff like Revolutionary girl Utena, which each episode has its own story and reason behind it.

I watched the whole thing. starts off stronge then near the end it craps out completely. let's put it this way, ep 21 you get ivamachines spreading gel on naked melos warriors and then the melos mount the iva, some still in humanoid form, and spank them while they are naked on the butt with an arrowe....yeah enough said or maybe not..there is a farm with girls that have cow print bikinis and get milked and of course they are used to make bowling balls for a monster..why not?

This one had so much wasted potential and ultimately lets the viewer down in the end (this seems to be true of many GAINAX works). If I was reviewing just the first half, the overall rating would be higher, as the story seemed to be on its way to being very complex and interesting. However, as listed in numerous reviews below, the last portion of the show was just plain bad, with fanservice playing the major role. I don't mind fanservice when it add to the show, but when it takes the place of finishing the story to a satisfactory ending, what can I say.

This one can be summed up in the words of the show's parrot; "arikoto-naikoto" which means "something-nothing". Melody LOOKS like something, but ends up saying nothing. One pointless surreal visual image after another that detract from the story, not add to it. The Melody of Oblivion tries to pass itself off as a deep and thought-provoking anime, but in the final analysis, its just oblivion.

Melody of Oblivion has an awesome opening. The story about Melos Warriors and Monsters is very good too. I love the way how warriors defeat monsters with bows, arrows and aiba machines.

I finished 23 episodes in 3 days, so I remember most of everything that happened. The first 20 episodes were done very well, but for some reason, things started not making any sense from 21-23. All sorts of weird images were shown. (For those who watched the whole Neo Genesis Evangelion series will know that the ending's really really odd, episode 21-23's of MoO similar to that) Maybe, this is the typical GAINAX ending (strange philosophical ending that very few people understands)

I'm giving a high rating on melody of oblivion just because of the first 20 episodes, not the ones after.

This anime show should be longer than 24 episodes, since many things were rushed in the end. The fight between monsters and melos warriors were packed in 1 episode. (How good can that be??)

I'm on my way to watching 24 which is the last episode, I hope everything gets better in this one. I was pretty disappointed with the way things were after episode 20.

Melody of Oblivion is a very good anime series. Allthough I admit the first few episodes aren't that good and the story starts somewhat slow, it is a constant acceleration of the pace until the climax in the final four episodes: you are warned because you will have to be safely strapped in your seat to manage the speed. The plot thickens as fast as the pace becomes and the story, initially seeming an bit shallow, deepens into an ocean that is bottomless. It is amazing how a story can explode right into your face and wake you up real good. Also things become complicated and intriguing as the story progresses, and also more humor comes along. Definitely watch this!

Really good, it reminded me a lot of some works by Michael Ende. It is moralistic, sad, fantastic, vast, beautiful and hard to grasp. (Quite a few scenes even seem to be a hommage to Ende's works...)

There is also some ecchi and (seemingly) random scenes thrown in, and I thought this also was pretty interesting and entertaining, although it makes it even harder to keep focused and understand -there are way more characters and details than necessary to tell the story (which probably is not even the main point of this animé), after all. ^^

Anyways, that's what I thought is nice about it, so if you like trying to grasp elusive stuff, go watch it.

For a series with such a promsing first half, The Melody of Oblivion slowly begins to sag under the weight of it's ambitious philosophical nature until all we are left to go on is a set of strangely surreal moments and a whole load of generic (and frankly pointless) sexual fan-service.

My disappointment in the concluding episodes of The Melody of Oblivion is apparent, but only because I so enjoyed the earlier, much more leisurly-paced episodes centering on Bocca and his touring of the various conformist cities and villages. During these early episodes, The Melody of Oblivion is a genuienly interesting little adventure story about a kid rallying against the system. However, towards it's end, the story seems to lose all focus and attempts to cover itself with many a derivative panty-shot, ass whip and orgasmic expression.

By the time we reach it's inevitably perplexing conclusion, breast pumps and all (yes, you read that correct, breast pumps!) I had just stopped caring. And it's a real shame too, The Melody of Oblivion is full of untapped potential and frequently dislays signs of becoming an unflinching guide to the good and bad sides of human nature.

I've just got done watching melody of oblivion and I'm very shocked and surprised how it ends....the anime is great but could use some touching up...towards the end starting from ep 16 i believe it becomes very stupid because I think they're just trying to have some comic reflief or something...I'm still in shock at how it ends...most animes i seen the bad guy always loses but in this anime it starts off with the bad guys that are wining and the good guys that try to deafeat the bad guys...I really enjoyed watchin the romance devloping between sayoko and bocca...you see some charater devlopment but not as much...overall i think melody is a great anime but i just wish the ending could be a little better...

I think I reviewed this before after the first few episodes came out. I pointed out that it had potential. Unfortunately this potential was completely ruined, which really is a shame. What could have been turned into a surreal anime with many metaphors and hidden meanings basically turned into a trendy mainstream anime with no depth or substantial plt that tried to look like a surreal anime with metaphors etc.

All throughout watching this I kept trying to give it the benefit of the doubt thinking it would pull itself together in the end and all the loose ends would be tied and meaningless elements woudl suddenly be made meaningful. However I should have quickly realized this wasn't going to happen. The first red flag is the pointless ecchi elements that are thrown in. Where as the male characters power up their arrows (Use Melos) in a reasonably normal, albeit chiche', manner the women end up looking like their are in the throws of an orgasm when they do it. This is especially true of Toune whose Melos is conveniently located on her inner thigh. Again they appear orgasmic when they then fire the arrow, etc etc. The anime progresses like this.

Setting that horny adolescent teen boy fan service aside, the other major problem is that the anime formed no cohesiveness in its references to various mythologies. They are essentially thrown in for the heck of it to try and give a desperately bad anime some form of reference, and cover up the fact that most of the episodes are filler and do little to progress the story or characters. There are a lot of better anime out there to watch. I would rank this slightly above BEET the vandal buster and place it comfortably next to Shadow Skill on the crap bin.
