| Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence is a 90 minute movie continuing from the 1995 Ghost in the Shell movie, with jaw dropping graphics and a very confusing storyline.
The graphics and animation is perfect. A seamless blend of 2 and 3D animation in perfect harmony, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence demonstrates how anime made in the 21st century should look like. If anything, Innocence can be presented as a visual showcase, displaying how far we have come in visual animation and effects in the past decades.
The music and theme songs in Innocence are pretty standard for Ghost in the Shell, although none of the more impressive Stand Alone Complex music is used. The voice acting is of very high quality, despite the relatively monotonic mood and dialogue throughout the movie.
The storyline of Innocence appears to be sophisticated to an extent that it becomes confusing and even boring at times. The few bits of action present in the movie are extremely well animated and does make Innocence more interesting to watch, but purely in terms of storyline, Innocence is a huge disappointment.
The characters in Innocence are another factor of disappointment. Their constant negative personalities does add to the dark mood of the scenes, but does nothing to make the characters interesting to watch. The fact that the main character of Ghost in the Shell, Motoko, only appears in the final few moments of the film, and not even in person at that, is quite a disappointment to many Ghost in the Shell fans.
Overall, Innocence gives viewers a mixed opinion. Its presentation is no doubt the best of its time. Innocence can be seen as a ravishing rose, with perfectly stunning visuals and a decent soundtrack. However, its seemingly overly complex storyline and sombre characters does stick out like a very big and painful thorn. All I can say is that if you enjoy Stand Alone Complex, you can do without watching Innocence.

| The future world of organic machines, cyborgs and mechanical dolls returns once again. This time with a brand new polish and an enormous pool of philosophy. I think only by mentioning that one fourth of character lines are direct quotes from the authors of many philosophy and religious books should get you an idea of the amount of work put into this show.
After being utterly dissapointed by the Ghost in the Shell S.A.C. and S.A.C. 2, which only managed to cut down the level of philosophy and increase the level of fanservice I stumbled upon this show without any high hopes up, as I have already thought that the true spirit of the Ghost in the Shell has died with the original. To my huge fortune, I couldn't have been more wrong. Innocence not only picks up just after the events of the original movie, but conveys its atmosphere and feel as well, succeeding as one of the best movie continuations I have come across of yet.
It feels just as if different teams would've been working on movies and S.A.C.. Everything is simply absolutetly different, from the astounding animation to the different story approach, from the gorgeous, original feel having music to different characters and their development. I must admit that this is my favourite anime movie, as most of the short shows I have watched were either boring during the mid-way or too rushed. Fortunately, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence doesn't have any of these flaws.
Recommending this is quite easy, if you have liked Ghost in the Shell original movie, if you loved it for its philosophy, you will love Innocence, as it delivers three times as much philosophical content as the original did. If you haven't watched the first movie, then go do it now or you wont understand a thing what is happening since fortunately Innocence has absolutetly no flashbacks to waste the time with, furthermore it's one of the best anime movies of the 20th century. Actually, even if you have watched the original I would highly suggest you to rewatch it, just before watching Innocence, as there is a few unexplained references to the old show, especially its last minutes.

| I have no idea what the story is about, even though seing GITS SAC1 and 2 and I have no idea where/what this movie is. And thoughh there is a story, something like the SAC but there is very little to go about, and its more than 1 hour you still could not understand it. In the end you get a very pretty animation with no effect on the viewer.

| Compared to the first movie of the franchise, a colossal disappointment. Whilst being visually stunning and having a unique approach to sound, the film is unbelievably pretentious, and reminds me a little too much of "Blade Runner" to be considered an original work.

| THIS REVIEW MIGHT CONTAIN SPOILERS PERTAINING TO THE ORIGINAL 1995 MOVIE. READ AT YOUR OWN RISK.
After almost nine years, Mamoru Oshii presents the sequel of the Original Ghost in the Shell movie labelled as Innocence. With stunning animation by production I.G and the same music as the original movie, Innocence is way better than the original movie (atleast in my opinion)
It is set a few years after the incident concerning the Puppet Master Incident and disappearance of the Major. With a tone much darker than the series and the original movie, Innocence harbors on the edge of Noir genre with Batou taking the reins of the lead. The movie deals with a certain set of female androids killing their owners and then self-destructing. Public section - 9 is then called to investigate with Batou and Togusa being partners in the investigation.
I had pointed in my review of the original movie that it was a bit rushed. Also missing was the heavy (intellectual) dialogue, and the philosophy for which GITS is well known. Oshii adresses both these points maing the movie much like the parent series: SAC. Innocence contains a lot of dialogues with a huge number of quotes such as:
Batou: What's the point of blaming the mirror if you don't like what you see?
Togusa: The mirror is not a tool for realising the truth, but for obsuring it.
And a host of others. With dialogues like these, it was indeed a rewarding experience listening ot such conversations. Innocence also differs from the original movie by being more dialogue oriented rather than focussing more on plot and action. The story by focussing only to the plot can be condensed to 50 minutes sor so. Also, no introductions are gven for the chcracters. The movie assumes that the viewer is well aquainted with the characters hence they feel more at home, like in SAC.
But this is not to say that Innocence is flawless. A normal viewere who is unaccustomed to the philosophy and the chcracters of GITS will find this a frustating watch. Also the movie doesnot move witha rapid pace - the first hour hardly goes anywhere, it can be neatly done in 30 minutes. But like most things, this can be looked upon as a good sign (for the delibrate slow pacing, allowing for long conversations and subtleness) or as bad direction (for adding to the confusion). Which way you look at it is left upto you....
Do I recommend Innocence? Yes, if you liked the Stand Alone Complex, this will be definitely your movie of the week. For Naruto-junkies, stay away, this would not suit your style. Did I like Innocence? Yes, I enjoyed it immensely. I believe it has a rewatching value, due to the heavy conversations. Also the nuances of Batou and Togusa made it an enjoying experience forcing a wry smile on my face. I am most eager for GITS: Solid State Society. Hope it comes out soon.

| nearly 10 years after the original movie and 16 years after the manga release, GITS continues to make an impact. Already a third movie and a third SAC installment have been announced.
The world of GITS can be a very complex and intriguing one, provided the viewer has the patience to study every aspect of that futuristic society with detail. This can indeed be a heavy task. The TV series and the movies were the easiest of the mediums to give the viewers a glimpse of M. Shirow's world. On the other hand the mangas (especially GITS2:Man Machine Interface) are extrememly difficult to comprehend, pushing the readers reading skills to the limits. GITS2:MMI is targeted at a selected few. I would consider myself a true GITS fan only if I was able to comprehend the mangas.
Initially I thought that the movie would try to adapt aspects of the MMI manga that is an extremely difficult read. To my dissapointment the movie had a totally different plot. In the manga Batou never appears and the story there is much different and hasnt much to do with Section 9. Instead in the movie there is a detective story with sci-fi elements. A plot about gynoids going berserk, killing their owners and then commit suicide. It is up to Batou and Aramaki to solve the case, visiting various places (some of them creepy and surreal).
After having watched the movie I wonder if this has anything to do with GITS.The whole scenery reminded me of Blade Runner. Sure the animation was impressive, especially the 3D but in the end this was rather painfull to watch. My eyes couldnt stand so much detail. Till the middle of the movie it was a boring watch and only after they visit Kim's mansion things turned more interesting.
The action scenes were very good, though mostly Batou took part in them. But the overall story was pretty lame. It was all an excuse to finally meet Motoko, though it is strange why she had to appear only much later in the movie.
1-2 sci-fi elements are thrown in, along with many quotes (too many for my taste) to add a pseudo-intellectual feeling. Though the discussion between Batou, Aramaki and Hallaway was interesting.
As for the characters, as many reviewers stated Batou's bitch was the best!
I've read this was an expensive production. They could have summed everything in half the length. The movie doesnt offer anything new to the GITS world or to sci-fi for that matter.
The dark atmosphere and the Chinese parade during the middle of the movie reminded me a lot of Kakurenbo. In fact I'd suggest the viewers to watch Kakurenbo too after watching GITS: Innocence to see how a story can be adapted much more effectively, in shorter length and first and foremost cheaply.

| While I'm sure that a lot of people disagree with me, I happen to think that Innocence is the best thing to come out of the GitS world...with a few important caveats.
Obviously the animation is some of the most stunning work ever created...it will eventually be outdone (as is everything) but will be the high watermark for a couple of years.
I think that the story is more mature and well developed than the first film or either of the two seasons of the TV show...however to fully appreciate it you have to have seen all of those previous entries which may deter some people and reduce the enjoyment of the film for others. As well, the writing can become very pretentious at times...like watching some argument between insecure first year philosophy students trying to outdo each other. For this reason, make sure to watch a version that has really good english translation...otherwise trying to pull out the subtext and details will be a painful (if not impossible) experience.

| Since the first gits movie was so successful I'm knew for sure this one gonna be just one of thouse sucker who sucking more money out of you. But this is just too pointless.
This movie is all about talking and quoting sentense from other books and femous people. Pretty much 60% of their conversation got a 'quote' into it. Then the 39% of the rest contain useless stuff like how human is a machine themself or why human want to creat a robot that looks like human in the first place. The talk just go on and on, the story begin to get overwhelming with all these useless talk and end up boring me.
Motoko only appear like 5% of the show and didn't give us any news where or how is she doing. While Batou getting all the credit for all of this, the story flip. What it's should be and it's only way it gonna work is let's Motoko being the main mute bitch with Batou being a comdian teasing his MAJOR. And yea, Togusa need to die. YES, I finally get annoying feeling from him. His useless human action made every other human looks like a picece of shit and I don't want to accept that.
Anyway, this movie is big let down. Boring story + no Motoko cont. is the worst thing ever. Watch this to see how it suck so bad yourself.

| I loved this anime! The animation was excellent through and through and I truly enjoyed the philosopy that drove the story. While it does have some violence and action, the story is not really driven by it.
I think that with the more mainstream success of SAC, the creator wanted to explore his ideas a little more deeply.

| I tried very hard to say to myself "I like it" but it was impossible. I love Ghost in the Shell and especially its philosophy. "Innocence" has great ideas too, but I really don't like the way it shows them.
Yes, the animation is incredible and it is a sample of what we are going to see in the next years.
The story, on the other hand, was very slow and the plot boring in the end.
As for the character part, I almost hated Batou, one of my favourite characters, because Major Kusanagi was missing and when she appeared it was just late. Fortunately, Togusa was there most of the time.
I really did not enjoy it. The sound is not something incredible and that makes things even worse (but the ending theme is great). Finally, I suggest that you see it, because it is the sequel of the most historic anime movie and because it has some new very interesting arguments about the path that technology follows.

| Pure eye-candy. That's what this sequel to Ghost in the Shell is. Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence looks and feel even more like Blade Runner. But, honestly, that's just a showcase for the production's animation skills. Which, I'll never get tired to say, are most impressive.
Yeah, yeah, I can hear already many of you screaming 'all appearance, no substance', and I do agree. There's nothing much behind the astonishing visuals. A few themes from the first installment are picked up and poorly developed. The plot itself doesn't seem to offer anything. Moreover, everything is really slow-paced, just like in the first movie. And there also are a couple of really boring dead-times.
Yet, I DID enjoy watching the movie. It doesn't seem to offer much besides what is shown on screen, but that's where its strength lies: visuals are so amazing, astonishing and smooth that the movie becomes a visual experience, confining other aspects as plot, sound and character development to a secondary role.
Anyways, if you're a big Ghost in the Shell fan, don't expect this to be anything like the first movie: they're far apart, whereas the first has a great plot with nice animations and the second offers unseen-before animations but no plot at all (almost).
See specific sections for further details. (C) 2005 kaneda1080

| I'm coming at this from the opposite direction, I think....... I absolutely hated Ghost in the Shell 1. So maybe it was the lack of expecations here that made this a much better film in my mind. As a whole I would probably have to call it a slightly above average film, but taking separate scenes on each of their merits, it is spectacular...that makes sense to me for some reason.

| Well, I hate to bring up the stereotypes but this is just another sequel that tried to live up to the hype spawned by the first movie and failed miserably.
Overall it's just a CG fest with too much pseudo philosophic talk and nothing to make it stand out like the first one did.

| Without the Major Motoko Kusanagi as a large part in this anime movie, this anime is lacking at best. The Major was the highlight of all the GITS series with her stunning charm and strength, with Batou as merely a good support character to balance her ambition. Without the charm of Kusanagi, there is nothing to keep the viewer engaged - no "cool" factor. However, if you haven't seen any of the ghost in the shell series, this wouldn't be a bad piece to watch for its artsyness.
Edit - perhaps the only part of this movie that is truly interesting to me is the part in the hacker's castle. There's something there in that scene that requires many viewings to understand what is going on since it is just so mind-boggling and like "WTF? what happened". I really should watch this again.
However, for the rest of this movie, one would feel more sense of satisfaction after reading a "Philosophy for Dummies" book. To me, all this movie has to offer is this feeling that the viewer does not belong in this world. Full of alienating philosophy, surreal environments, depressing after-effects (as portrayed through Batou, especially) due to the society of the time... this movie almost seems like a social commentary of the future that doesn't exist yet.
After reading the reviews of those after me who praise this movie or its mature and smarter philosophical themes without fanservice, I say that Motoko is not just some naked robot chick running around blowing stuff around her. Togusa and Batou both seem so clueless. They exemplify the weakness of not knowing anything that is going on and not being able to do anything about it in this world where information and high-tech parts determine superiority. Batou's scene with the convenience store and Togusa overall weakness due to not having a cyborg body in that mafia raid shows this all. Major Kusanagi on the other hand is the ultimate heroine - powerful, able and always on the top of things. Even if she wasn't playing superman all the time, she had an aura of leadership and strength which held the team together. Without her, everyone else in Section 9 felt like a bunch of rag-tag kids playing in the yard, prey to some larger foe. However, the MOST alluring aspect of Major Kusanagi is how despite her superiority in all these aspects, she has problems with keeping humanity in her all android body. When the story is told from this viewpoint - from the top looking down- it feels more satisfying, realistic, and impacting.
Anyway, this movie is definitely for the more mature audience. Those who DID like GITS originally for the fan-service (what fan-service? she's an android without organic breasts) and the action would hate this except for the end. But even with those attributes aside, Innocence is still less satisfying a movie than its predecessor. There is less sympathizable feeling and emotion as the viewer is easily alienated from this mystical world with a cast of weak characters and philosophy mumbo jumbo.

| One of the best OVAs I've ever seen, HANDS DOWN. This can be seen and understood without watching the previous OVA or TV series. We see a return of the same old cast members and how their life has evolved since the "evolutionary step" taken by Motoko.
The characters are still interesting and have become even more so due to the fact that some have totally changed and others remain the same depending on their relationship to Motoko.
The plot is interesting since it explores the same philosophical questions from the previous OVA and TV series as well.
There isn't much I didn't like about this great OVA and everyone and I do mean EVERYONE should take a look at this masterpiece.

| Best part about this movie was all the hype around it. Visuals were very nice however, lot's of colors used and interesting drawing style. CG part was nice, however a lot of scenes were kinda sub-par. Atmosphere was confusing too. In first movie, we had high-tech cars, and in this one (supposed to be after GiTS) old cars and wierd looking planes.. Intriguing but odd. A lot of backgrounds (in the first half of movie) felt out of place.
Audio was ok. Voice acting was ok, however music was directly inspired by the first movie, and hence was brilliant aswell. (altough reminded too much of GiTS1 ost, which kinda kills the originality)
Story is where this anime goes really down. Basic story was std stuff, some robots goes on a killing rampage and Bataou and co have to figure it out. Throw in a LOT of political mumbo jumbo and uselessly extend it to fill 90 minutes or so. Kinda sad really, they touched upon such a nice topic (ghost in the shells.. really!) but all the middle part of movie kinda ruined the experience.
Characters were ok, everyone was known from GiTS (and SAC) No new and important info was revealed about them either, so development was rather minimum.
Somehow, it was entertaining to watch, mostly because of it's lovely visual and audio effects. But i doubt if i ever gonna watch the whole thing again. STill, it could be a lot lot better, ah well..

| A tour-de-force anime showcase that confounds more than elightens. Ghost in the Shell: Innocense essentially is wrapped around a rather shallow sci-fi plot that is not coherent in any way pertaining to the previous show in the series nor the TV series. Ostensibly, the anime tackles the theme of human nature and the digitized ideal that we seem to strive for, but actually the film is nothing more than Oshii's masturbatory regurgitation of his set of ideas that do neither carry the theme to new heights nor represent any new direction in the misanthrope's train of throughts.
That is not to say that the film isn't intriguing. Oshii is a very profound man, coming from all the diverse sources of quotable didactic bombs he sics on the unsuspecting viewers. Such numerous and convoluted are some of the quotes that one can only wonder at the consummate confidence of the director to make such a film shrouded in obscurity of thoughts possible.
The animation is top-notch, but cannot bind the disaparate media involving 2D and 3D as fluently as one would expect from a such reputed studio. 3D effects themselves are very intricately crafted and implemented, and visually it is inimitable in detail and execution, by current standards.
Again, what is this about innocence? Oshii can live with his blow-up doll fetishes for all I care. Just don't flaunt it as something profound.
Some fitting quotes:
"Basically, I no longer work for anything but the sensation I have while working." - Albert Giacometti
"Who the hell wants to hear actors talk?" - H. M. Warner

| Hoooooo boy, this is gonna be a doozy. I'm just gonna get to one fact, and that is that everyone has their own opinions, especially about a genre that's Ghost in the Shell related.
You can either love it because you understand everything, hate it becuz you don't understand things, or have mixed feelings becuz you were confused by some elements.
I loved it. It takes deep thought to appreciate this anime, since it relies heavily on the emphasis of the man-machine philosophy, which isn't very appealing to the mass really.
To quite a lot of people, they'll think that this is only eye candy to fork in money. While it may be eye candy, it's much more than that.
Of course, to the mass, they'll think that this film is one of the most convoluted plots ever constructed. I'm just gonna say this: this movie is seriously NOT for people who get irritated by deep-thought! If you wanna watch it for eye candy and soundtrack, then be my guest. If you wanna watch it for its plot, hoever, then be prepared, seriously, for deep, deep thoughts.
Up until now, I still don't know WHY Kusanagi is gone, but maybe I'd have to finish 2nd Gig, however, I truly do not know.

| Ghost in the shell is a typical example of how over use of eye candy can in fact cover what is a very boring core.
This anime has the best graphics I have seen in a anime, but lots of it are very still and slow, action is NOT plentiful. To give you an idea of what the CGI extravaganza was like, it's almost like watching FMV in Final Fantasy. Very impressive, much better than vampire hunter D: Bloodlust.
The story, as you'd expect from ghost in the shell is totally confusing, full of subtlety, and utilises themes that have been used to death. Themes such as humans versus machines, machine emotions and ethics, reality, crime, conspiracy and corruption. They are good themes, but when you uses them in the most confusing way in which either there's no real substance there and what the characters say are a load of bull, or there's a nest of stuff present. But if that's the case, and people don't know what you are talking about, then it's totally useless. Rather like swearing to someone in a foreign language, totally and utterly non-effective.
The characters were also very dull, the best character by far was the dog, and that says it all.
The sound could have been much better, the sound effects was what you'd expect from a movie, but apart form that, nothing much else there.
I didn't enjoy this much, but I do recommend it just for the graphics and I think if you enjoyed the original ghost in the shell movie, then you'll like this too.

| I am sure I am not the only one who has waited for this film. Ghost in the Shell is one of my favourite movies, and the series is pretty darn good. So you would only expect a great second movie.
The artwork, well that is just amazing. I love the way they have blended in CGI with the actual animé and how it work. It all looks so pretty, but one can get too caught into it and forget about what is happening.
The sound is great, I can't find faults in that. The score is brilliant, and the voices are great.
Now everything else. The story just tends to drag on. I tried to force myself to watch it, but I just could not enjoy it. The movie seemed to be too deep at times, and I don't think they managed to pull it off. I mean take the scene with the hacker Kim for example. When it kept repeating, I just found myself thinking "when is this going to end?"
The main character this time round is Batou. You just can't seem to connect with him. I don't know how other people feel, I'm writing this without reading other reviews, but I just felt that the characters could have been developed a bit more.
I may come back to this when I'm bored one day, but for now it goes into my cupboard to collect dust.
