| Wow... what a shit.
Seriously, this show is an epitome of failure. It literally fails at everything it tries to do. If it's story it strays from laughibly bad to simply boring. While characters not only fail to invoke any emotion, but also fail at even resembling real human beings. Finally action scenes are so cheap and unexciting that action fans might start crying.
No, do not watch this show, the only thing it doesn't fail at is wasting your time.

| In my opinion, this is the best fighting anime around, mind you, I don't consider Rurouni Kenshin a fighting anime. The story isn't all that unique, and it's pretty straightforward, but it's great that famed people and warriors also partake within the events set up through the three different generations.
The comic elements are perfect, especially the first arc. It's somewhat similar to Peace-Maker Kurogane in setting, but in a much faster developed plot, with no deep meaning behind anything. This is not a coming of age story, with the few twists thrown here and there. Rather, it is a story where the characters go from point A to point B, and anything that steps in their way to impede, is thrown aside. Pretty straightforward and interesting stuff.
Wish the first arc would have been longer. The second arc probably was the best in terms of just fighting. The third arc was the most well rounded, and could stand on it's own as a separate series. A lot more intrigue and lessons of history involved, which slowed the pacing down compared to the previous two arcs. It was a welcome change though, as we got to know more about the other characters that appeared.
Sound fit appropriately where it was needed. The OP was nice. Animation wasn't perfect, but still nice nonetheless. The show isn't flawless and it doesn't try to pretend to be something, which is what makes it successful. It's a straightforward anime that you can enjoy, and if you're like me, you'll find yourself engrossed with it fairly quickly. In that regard, the show does perfectly what it needs to do... draw the viewer in.

| A good watch overall. Real cool real life characters, starting somewhere in the 1500's and going up to just after the 1850's. Its about the mysterious legendary Mutsu Clan and their secret roles through different events and time periods in Japanese history. The animation was cool, it reminded me of Demon Eyes Kyo. The story was really cool, pitting Mutsu against many of the larger-than-life historical Japanese heroes. Where the anime suffers though is in its attempt to cover such a wide portion of history. I forget exactly, but there was something like 3 or 4 period changes in which the watcher who's just getting into the characters is uprooted and thrown into a whole new cast of characters. It also kind of messes with your mind because the Mutsu character looks almost exactly the same throughout. I think it was done in an attempt to give the viewer somebody he could relate to, but it really just made things seem a little off somehow. It was a fun one time watch though and it made me want to learn more about Japanese history and the cast of characters involved in this anime.

| Based on the first main character saga:
This anime has the oddest atmosphere. It does not match the typical samurai anime at all. I could easily see this music being pumped up next to trance music during some of the fight scenes. For some reason, things do not seem to match the time period. Aside from swords being swung around, dojos existing left and right, and old men ninjas running around, not much really tells about what time period this takes place in. In other words, I could not get into the mood of the whole samurai/fighting spirit that I usually associate with.
I admit that at times the fights are pretty cool and its hard to hate a non-chalant ultra strong character that oddly resembles Son Goku from DBZ at times. If anyone were to watch this anime, it would be to see people get totally blown away by one super strong character.
Although he protects weaker people, and all the characters some what resemble the character cast of Rurouni Kenshin i.e. the thieving kid and Kaoru, the mood is completely different. This is because he essentially silently boats his power. In trut, he is not completely non-chalant and is completely confident. He is a wandering spirit and if he was not the main character, I might even hate him. Jeez, asking for refreshments and tea is so impudent... even after knocking out the whole dojo...
Essentially, his role feels like an out of place Street Fighter character. So out of place that I do not get the usual adrealine rush I feel sometimes. Aside from the main cast of characters, everyone else is so damn petty... jeez, revenge is all that is in their heads.
For the second stage:
Stuff is a little more dramatic, and more interesting characters appear. Plot is also a bit stronger since there's actually an established structure to be overtaken. If you are to watch this anime, start from episode 8 or so. The first 7 are totally different in mood than this second "generation". Music is more interesting, fights are more epic-like. The original characters have grown and changed, but there's still the theme of a tomboyish woman who wants to fight. An interesting tournament arises in this section, more history is brought into context. Still not the best anime at this point, but totally a different pacing. There was also this point of interest where I was trying to interpret who was who... and relations between character. Anyway, at least there was a driving force other than pure random fighting. I really really enjoyed seeing the different styles, if they are real stances and styles, than I am all the more impressed! The tournament is fun. Although, this is a more extreme version of Street Fighter...
Part 3: haven't seen it yet. begins with episode 15 if you want to watch it.

| I loved this anime, and it made me want to delve further into this fictitous world of the MUtsus. It is wrapped with little comedy, tragedy, and quite a twist into the middle of the series. I thoroughly enjoyed this. Do not let these low reviews set you away from it. This a Kenshin like gem. Only much shorter and utilizes different main characters.
I really liked this anime. It has some low points, but the good outweigh the bad. My high rankings is part due my partiality to good fighting animes.

| Shura No Toki fighting scenes look really cool and very cheesy. The Mustu generation made the martial art fighting style(w/o sword) looks godly. Only thing is.. they keep repeating the same plot over and over again untill the end.
I find it really excitment everytime Mustu guy fighting the strong guy in their time period. The build up is very nice, they will try to make everyone mysteries or maybe might be relate to the old char. This happen bcuz the time in Shura are saparated in to section. Once they done with 1 Mustu, everything will be over and time forward to like 25 years after and the then another Mustu appears out of nowhere. The period of time changing according to the real world fact which make it interesting but still what you want to see is where're the Mutsu family, and where's the romance after the fighting end. Althou somehow Mutsu guys sure seem to find themself a good looking women everytime... acutally there isn't many women in the show. The romance in Shura are cute and light-heart just like the old time period women would react. Same as for the guy in Shura always act cool and never fear death wanting to die as a fighter than a solider... thouse feeling are carry along with in the story giving you some feeling on what it feel like in the old days.
Fighting scenes are VERY COOL! But try not get piss out by the cut short on the char and restart on the new one. No cute girls.. but they still blushing.. so who's cares. Anyway, give this a try if you like the idea of Sword vs. Fist. YOu'll be sure to get enough actions to keep you untill they got the REAL FIGHT! !WOO !HOO

| Overall this anime is a good watch for anybody who likes either historic based anime or anime about martial arts or both. The story was interesting and the characters were believable. The sound did its job and helped to create a certain mood when it was required, but it was not anything super special.

| I've been watching this slowly over the past year and I have to admit that this is a truly a hidden gem among anime.
This is a historical fighting anime based on a ficticious fighting school called 'Mutsu Emneri Ryu', a weapon-less fighting technique passed down from father to son, undefeated in 1000 years. It's based off a manga by the name of Shura no Mon which details the life of a Mutsu in the 20th century, except the setting in this show is definately historical. With three different side stories which combine various Mutsu fighters with various legendary samurai in Japan's history this anime traverses over a span of 200 years in just 26 episodes.
Although I would have to agree with many that the style of the animation is definately 1990s in design and simplicity, the animation does go pretty smoothly in the fighting scenes to make it worthwile. As well, the settings are superbly set. If you can get past the fact that they had a very small budget for this show, you can start to appreciate what they did manage to do with the restrictions they had. In certain episodes the animation does get visibly better though.
The characters are a hard thing to talk about. On one hand, every story features the more or less identical main Mutsu character (well I guess they're all related so why not right?), along with a spunky and tomboyish girl who acts as the main love interest for the story arc. While this gets old fast, it is the other characters, the ones that interact with our protagonist which make this anime worth watching.
With such notables as Miyamoto Musashi, Yagyu Jubei Mitsuyoshi, Sakomoto Ryoma, Hijikata Toshizou and Okita Souji this show adds some spice to history by mixing in the story of the Mutsu with these most notable figures in Japanese history. It is here at the anime shines the best in my opinion. Because it is rooted somewhat in history, the action never becomes TOO ridiculous even if it does get a bit hard to believe at points. Still, while not necessarily a slice of life historical anime it does a great job of putting the viewer in those times. Since it is rooted in history, the challenge then is not to find out where the plot leads (in many cases you know certain things must happen and certain people must not die) but it is the journey on how the characters got to where they are which is the most interesting.
Of course to properly review this anime, one must talk about the actual fighting within the anime, which I have to say is quite exciting. Unlike that other recently released samurai anime, Samurai Champloo this show doesn't exactly boast the greatest animation of all time. It doesn't even have the greatest fights of all time. But it is the way in which the fights are presented that make this such a joy to watch. While there are plently of 'grunt killings', fights between the main characters are done very skillfully. There's plently of anticipation, and the fights are presented less as a 'DBZ-style I am more powerful than you because I am mad' kind of way, but instead are presented in a thinking man's way, or as much as you can do that within the constraints of animation. Again it is not the victor that matters, you know the Mutsu guy will always win, but it is HOW he wins that is interesting.
Shura no Toki is definately not the most pretty anime out there, and it is definately hard to fall in love with the characters as the show has 3 very different story arcs within a 26-episode span. What it does do is protray history with a bit of flair, making it both alive and exciting while firmly grounding historical characters within the constraints of real life, if with just a little bit of embellishment.

| I really like the fight scenes of this anime.Pretty good martial arts moves. A lot of drawing of the katana. Not bad at all. I like the idea of the 3 generation of Mutsu with changes of technique .
Animation is not very good old style almost but its not bad either.
I find the story light, not heavy at all.The characters has some intersting side as well. Its not bad at all.
I then watched the English dubb- the translation is really weak, the fansubbers is better.Man for the first episode , they should have been careful.I think the voices didnt match the characters well.I am disappointed with Media Blaster.

| Shura No Toki(Mutsu Enmeiryu Gaiden) takes place in the more fedual ages of Japan. I've not completed the series but I have seen enough to get a good feel. The basic plot is The Mutsu warriors were hand to hand fighters who were undefetable. The series itself seems to have three different fighters who have their own saga. I believe that the child of the Mutsu in the first saga has a son who is in the second saga and so on. The third saga is completely different and more historical that the first two. The animation and sound are not top notch but not horrible. I've been exposed to worse. The story is good but really gets interesting in saga 2 and 3. With the historical background mixed into the fighters the Mutsu meet. Getting a feel for the Characters in Shura is difficult because they aren't around for long. With all the saga switches new characters appear and old ones are forgotten. Overall Shura No Toki is a good animation with realistic fights and historical ethics mixed in with the plot. Fans of martial art animes should check this out.

| Lol... at first i thought Shura No Toki was an old anime re-subbed on Bitorrent... you can imagine my surprise when i found out this was made in 2004 and not in the early 90s or late 80s... and i started wondering who would make such a lame anime???
Let's see now... the animation looks like something that came out of the late 80's early 90's... with the worst fighting scenes i ever seen in wich they just show more static pictures of the fight then actual animation... as for the general design?? vague, badly done with no flavour and with almost all the characters looking the same.
The story?... very very predictable, nothing that will make you want more, just an excuse to show some sword fighting like most action/martial-arts animes, but then again the action here is just fubar. and between the short brakes in wich we don't get lame fighting skills we get a lame/clyche love story with no real character developement.
Characters?? well they all look the same... as for the main character, he's an almost super-human sword fighter that can chop up with a short knife 20 well trained fully armed fighters and this with a smile on his face with no worries and all in under 15 seconds... and in his free time he's a worry-free slacker... yeah right that's really original NOT... isn't that really stupid??
Overall an anime with 0 value in my opinion... with no real story, no real character developement, and strange but no interesting fighting scenes, in an action anime... it actually fails on all levels... Even if you're a fan of martial-arts animes this is a shure NO... better go rewatch Rouroni Kenshin, Samurai deeper Kyo.

| After watching 14 episodes...I must say that I dislike this series very much.
The animation looks 1990s. The main characters of the 2 generations (out of 3) looks the same, not just the looks but the clothing too. (like twins)
Plotwise, it's very similar and predictable. The first 10-20 seconds of the fighting scenes, the characters that fight do nothing, and the fighting ends pretty fast, and this dissapoints me.
I don't want to watch anymore of this.

| This story is based on the sidestory of the popular 1990s Fighting-Based comic called Shura No Mon.
The story tells the history of the Mutsu Enmei Ryu clan and how it's ancestors had brushes with the japanese historial figures. The strongest man of the clan will have the title of Mutsu. He will search for the strongest opponent he can find and fight to win.
In the story, the weak is aided by Mutsu to turn the tide against the strong. He uses his unarmed combat moves to kill off his enemies and purse the way of death.
This anime is a treasure for all Shura No Toki and Shura No Mon fans. I hope more of the (Light)Mutsu Enmei Ryu and (Dark)Mutsu Enmei Ryu will be revealed.
Lastly, this comic is not a copy of Kenshin because it came out before Kenshin. Thank you.

| Great stuff. The fights are great and the story is pretty decent. Even though you don't get to deep enought on the characters...
Still waiting for the other subs to see how it ends...still I recomend it to all anime fighting fans. You wont be disapointed.
Only thing that bothers me is the repetition of drawings....sometimes seems like the main chatacters are fighting an army of clones. Studio needs to spend a little more time drawing diferent characters...even the main characters tend to look alike....
Anyway watch it.

| Animation wise, while 1990's in style it is very smooth and well done. The fight scenes are choreography excellently, and the character designs are nicely done and fit the characters well.
Sound, i found it very good, i like the intro very much and the close fit the attitudes the mutsu portrayed, very fitting.
I disliked the side story aspect of this series. The charactesr don't transverse the stories much (though musashi did in old age and his deciple (spl?) went from a 7-8 year old to a 30 something. Only characters which crossed stories. The stories seemed to brief.
Same with the characters, i found the change irritating because it significantly shortened the character development found in each story. I like the characters but found them lacking some.
Value wise, it is intresting in that it is a collective of similar short stories, but other than that and the good fight scenes (comparable to champoo and only surpassed by airmaster)
it has little collecting value to me.
It was entertaining although and through the medicore shows aired this year (most good have ended/not started airing) i would watch this.

| Well, personally I really enjoyed Shura no Toki. The characters are likable and easygoing, and the overall tone of the anime is fairly lighthearted, centred on martial arts (don't expect very much character development, given that this IS a 'side-story' and the first set of characters don't stick around for too long anyway). The fighting is fairly realistic in terms of the amount of damage a human can take and still keep standing, which is something that too many of the over-popular series ignore, and I found quite refreshing (okay, so most of the main characters are still inhumanly fast and skilled). Soundtrack is enjoyable too, loved the opening/ending songs, and the rest of the music seems to fit in really well.
Definately recommend it. At least watch the first few episodes before passing judgement. Most likely you'll either love it or hate it.

| I think this series is pretty good. Gets better after the first few episodes. Although like most of the other reviewers says, you dont really develop much feelings for the characters because they are not too complicated.
I really enjoyed it and was going crazy trying to find each episode to download. So there... there is a lot of suspense even though you sort of know what's going to happen. Definitely worth watching.

| The plot is simple but enjoyable enough. A few old school characters has gotten buffed up bods and new hairdos.
So far, it seems like its somewhere in the mutsu's blood to get themselves acquinted with 'scrapped' princesses.
Other than that, the martial arts display are rather realistic most of the time.
The idea of sword aura is used in one generation in the anime. Such an idea is old to japan. But it would be wonderful if my senses could attune to such things too.
The only issue i have with this anime is that the gunsmen are really useless.
Ok, maybe we can overlook that becos the gunsmen got very scared at the fact that its some notorious guy running between some trees and so gunsmen missed their shots 100% of the time.
The third generation seems to our last journey together with the mutsus. Showing us multiple generation of a family seems to project an 'accelerated' glimpse into the topic of 'life'. Somehow, the anime makes me think about how i wanna spend my life.
If u are looking for entertainment with a user-friendly storyline, this is a treat!

| After watching the first 12 episodes of this series, i've realised there isn't much of a plot to this anime. If you're interested in martial arts or fighting, this is a great anime. Personally, i enjoyed htis anime, because it was pretty relaxing and the animation was nice. It has several stories linked with the martial arts mutsu enmei

| Great anime based from the early 90s manga. For people looking a deep storyline this might not be for them. as the title shows its just a sidestories. the original author just having fun with historical figures, so there will be no real story in this anime. Pick this anime with the "SIDESTORY" in mind.
