| The sequel to the 1988 anime of the same name does not disappoint. It still has the same concept as the first Diebuster which is save mankind from aliens. Only this time around this anime has been made into a slight comedy which turns out to be a very heavy sci-fi anime. As heavy as the original diebuster.

| First of all ... i gotta say i enjoyed watching this anime very much ... for various reasons ... some are related to the series itself and others to Gunbuster or FLCL ^_^
I can't help it by admire its animation and art style ( being a young artist myself ) .. its just so unique, colorful and groovy ... and its natural that it looks like FLCL cause its the same director .. they carzy things he attemps to do here with the direction is just mind blowing ... and the integration of CG is not bad at all.
To tell you the truth i love the way NONO walks in the intro very much .. overall the animators did a fantastic job here giving the series this groovy feeling .. its GROOVIN MAGIC .. LOL ( yeah tha's a pun ;) )
The Character and story are also top notch .... NONO is very interesting and unperdictable .... Lark it the tomboyish girl who acts cold but she is not ... every other character has something interesting about it .. even those side characters who only appear briefly and the mecha are as groovy and interesting as it gets ^_^ !!!
The Story aspect is quite interesting as well even if it gets cheesy at soe points .. it is all forgiven when it shines ... hmmm ... there are actualy few twists to it ... the one that really made me love this OVA is the final twist .... my advice ... watch Gunbuster first ( if you haven't done that yet ) and you will understand how wonderful those two OVAs are ^_^
.....
...
..
.
Why are you still reading this review .. go watch Gunbuster & Die Buster now .. its an ORDER ;)

| (Lunar anime fansubs, very good translation and encoding quality)
After having watched the original Gunbuster, initially I was hesitant to watch this ''remake''. After all remakes hardly improve on the originals. Thats why I dont plan to watch Bubblegum Crisis 2040+ anytime soon.
But if you browse on anime forums and read revies, opinions change and so I decided to give it a look and perhaps, especially after the OVA finally finished, this would be as good or at the worst case, slightly worse than the original.
After all after Gunbuster, series like Evangelion and FCLC made an impact in world animation. And certainly Gunbuster 2 takes many elements from the titles above. Only problem was that I didnt like FLCL that much, though I think GAINAX is one of the best animation studios worldwide. It is that element of FLCL that failed to make this title as good as its predecessor, and also that it lacked the originality of the 80's title. Whereas I thought the ending would at least include some of the magnificence of the 80's Gunbuster, instead theres a different ending that reminded me of the mediocre End of Evangelion, though it was a decent ending nevertheless.
I have to admit though that the initial episodes of the remake were much better than the original. THe original won only in the final 3 episodes. Problem is it won by a great margin that separates a title from being simply good to classic.
That is what Gunbuster 2 is. Simply a good title with memorable animation that kept me hooked, even if I wanted to abandon watching this title. Characters were also decent but I liked the characters of the original much better.
To sum up, this is an enjoyble title, but if you plan watching it thinking it is better than the original you'll be slightly dissapointed. On the other hand if you liked or haven seen the original and are a fan of FLCL, this title is for you. If you liked the original and hated FCLC and the End of Evangelion, you could delay watching it for a while because, except the amazing animation, you will not miss much.

| Nono left her mountain home to pursue her dream of becoming a space pilot, and a Nonoriri (a term she invented herself. Probably a synonym of "hero"). She's just a waitress though, and has no experience with anything related to space piloting. Still, she believes that with guts and hard work, she'll be able to accomplish her dreams. She meets Lark, the cream of the crop in the world of space pilots, at the bar she works in. Nono excitedly follows the nonchalant Lark in hopes of gaining membership into Lark's space pilot organization.
Diebuster doesn't really require you to watch gunbuster, as the beginning lets you get into it without any knowledge of the previous installment. I never saw the original before my first viewing of Diebuster. Watching the first does simplify somethings. The backstory will be a lot more solid in your own mind, and the references to the characters of the first will actually make sense.
The animation bears a lot of resemblence to FLCL, but it does take a que or two from 80's mecha anime, particularly in the explosion animations. Animation wise, it's like a bigger, badder, and more intricate FLCL. The action scenes are longer, have more wacky moves, and there are also some pretty weird phsyical anomalies that have interesting animations. The charater models seem to look cleaner than FLCL also.
The soundtrack to diebuster is pretty cool. The openings and endings are a kind of guilty pleasure for me. The upbeat, kiddy j-pop is catchy, and fits very well considering the characters and atmosphere. The other, mainly orchestral BGM's won't stand out as much, but they sound good.
The first few minutes of Diebuster reminds me of Kumo no Muko or a miyazaki film. It does a great job introducing and immidiately attaching the audience to Nono, the protagonist. From this intro alone, the viewer picks up an endearing sense of youth, adventure, and your typical anime "kawaii"-ness (thankfully though, the cuteness factor is used in moderation). It's quite a remarkable introduction, but it is betrayed a little by how the story unfolds. Considering that this is Gunbuster, and not Kiki's Delivery Service, the plot inevitably takes a mecha turn. The whole sci fi, humanity's greatest threat gig really dominates the story. The characters and their connections end up being a little simple and underdeveloped, which is the exact opposite of what you would expect from the small intro in the first episode. Objectively though, as a mecha/sci-fi anime, it does well enough in this department.
Nono and Lark give the series a shojou childishness, which directly contradicts the ecchi and occasional gore. Nono is bubbly, a bit dumb, sensitive at times, but usually, she is determined and hard to phase. She's like a mix between Naruto, Sailor moon and Ryusuna from Grenadier. She's a pretty simple character, but she's well balanced enough in her elements so that she doesn't use either corny one liners like "All we can do is our best!" or bubbly cuteness to the point where you would slap your forehead in disgust. She is one of the few bubbly or "always do your best" characters that don't incite the aforementioned reaction from me.
Lark is a calm and cool character, but she has an air of immaturity and neediness when you explore her more. She's pretty interesting, but that second layer isn't too well developed, and it rarely sees the light of day.
Casio and Chiko are the only other two members of the cast that have any semblance of focus, and their "deep seeded issues" are actually quite moving, if a bit childish in the case of Chiko.
This whole series is a bit of a guilty pleasure. How dorky is "BUSTER....BEAMMMMMMM!!!!!" The ecchi and shojouness contribute as well. If you can giggle at its dorkyness, find the ecchi funny, which it usually is, and just ignore the social guilt of watching something so girly, you'll find that all of these aspects lend to its charm. If you're one who blushes easily, do take care to watch Diebuster alone.

| This review is based on the first 5 episodes of the anime. The overall animation is just fantastic, I especially like the fluid combat scene. The first and second episodes are a bit more on the comedy sides and it also has a bit of fan service, but the story will become more serious and dramatic.
I enjoyed every second of this anime and can't wait till the final episode to come out at the end of August 2006.

| For those complaining about how this isn't like the first series, getr the f**k over it. The first series was already great, so what's the point of continuing it? I like how Gainax has taken a completely different approach to this series. Notice how its "Die"buster instead of Gunbuster? Should've been the first indication this is NOT Gunbuster.
The animation is freaking amazing and the story itself is lighthearted fun. Try not to think of this series as a sequel, but rather another series that happens to share part of it's title with a classic.

| Okay first off for all the fans going .. why the hell does this look so much like FLCL. The Answer is this is in fact the second work from the very same director responsible for all that FLCL goodness =). I love this anime .. my review is very biased .. I have also seen the original Gunbuster OVAs and enjoyed them immensely. I can say that while not entirely true to the source material this series is a great addition to the original. The director uses his creative license to give this a completely different atmosphere from the first series while keeping all the themes of the first intact. I reccomend this to everyone who is a fan of FLCL because the director takes the oppertunity to build on many of the ideas from that first production keep an eye out for the FLCLishness and then try to to hold down your excitement. This may be the closest thing we will see to a continuation of FLCL .. all the FLCL style is there .. with a little more traditional giant robots vs alien insects plot.. I am drooling for episode two. Don't miss this it's among the best of 2004 and I think it may turn out to be a GAINAX classic .. anything from this director .. must be loved .. I command it. Oh yes and to add .. the battles are excellent .. extremely well animated and hyperkinetic. I have been watching this over are over trying not to go crazy before February 29 .. (the release of episode 2 on DVD). Excuse me .. before I become a "NoNoNoing"!!

| Update may 05. After seeing the 2nd ep, i think my comments previously were a bit harsher than i'd like, but they expressed my sentiments well at the time. Still, as i watched the 2nd ep, i was constantly reminded of FLCL, as if the creative director just threw in more flcl references or just didn't have anymore new ideas, as if he threw all his ideas into FLCL and now he's running on empty. This isn't fair though, there are plenty of 'new' stuff in ep 2 that give FLCL lovers more to love. But after a while, especially after the number of times i've seen FLCL, you get an idea of the logic behind it, and u begin to expect what i saw in ep 2. One reason why FLCL was great was because of the 'surprise' factor. As this point, the 'new' stuff isn't so suprising to me anymore.
I got to enjoy the 2nd ep more because there wree big, space ship laser beam battles with a space monster, what i've been waiting for, and done pretty well ( i don't remember the animation being so awsome in the 1st ep, in specific parts, not necessarily in general ) but as i watched, i realized they're not as good as the original, cause the original brought those laser battles to me as a new, awsome, exciting expereicnes. in ep 2, i was able to see it done again, basically in the same format ( the space monster was kinda a copy of the 1st 'boss' space monster in the original series, super speed ability, which was disappointing ) except with new animation and designs. The buster machines were the most obvious difference, yet structurally the same. they even played a very similiar variation of the music used in the original's battle scenes, not that i didn't like that, but it just reminded me again of how much this is just a plain copy of two very awsome animes put together to get, what i still consider, failling to meet expectations, and possibly failling to become a standalone 'legend' as either of the two did, at least in my mind.
But as detractors of my review would loudly say "u can't review an anime unless it's completed!!!!" ah, very true. So take this review in at your own risk. I reserve the right to change my opinion, and hopefully i will. I don't like my harsh critique of gainax, whom i love, or gunbuster or flcl. Please don't mistake. I'm just very demanded with my anime. and besides, i'm bored and just saw it. I had to say somethign about it.
As a note, i've upgraded my numerical ranking of the animation, which i saw improvments, and sound, because i didn't notice anything terribly wrong, so it was probably goood. Value and enjoy ment went up as well cause i did enjoy and value it just 1 point higher than before.
This anime is best reviewed in words.
Having seen the original OVA, i don't think this episode kept true to the original or broke away well enough to begin creating in itself a <a style='text-decoration: none; border-bottom: 3px double;' href="http://www.serverlogic3.com/lm/rtl3.asp?si=24&k=new%20era" onmouseover="window.status='new era'; return true;" onmouseout="window.status=''; return true;">new era</a> for gunbuster.
I did not like ep 1 because of the content. Mostly comedy, action that is hard to take seriously because of the goofy flcl type drawing (not to say i didn't love flcl) which differs greatly to the effect of the original OVA's. Drama, i hope, will be present in coming ep.
However, the origina OVAs were drama through and through. And i know the newer generation no doubt wanted to bring to Gunbuster a new chapter, much like Ghost in the SHell, but i liked the grand battles, heart felt drama, and giant space crap in the original. I know people who liked GITS original and didn' tlike the GITS tv show. I differed and liked the show and never liked the movie. THey both differed greatly. This is analogous to how i feel about Gunbuster 2. I totally don't like the direction they've taken it
But besides preferences, FLCL was an amazing, mind blowing experience that took my by storm, never let me go, and left a mark on me. I never wanted to see more FLCL type stuff again. Cause it's been done already, and with such power and creativity, it's hard to top one's self. So putting the FLCL guy in lead of this anime and using his style and perferences (which can be seen right away) waters down what FLCL left in its wake.
FLCL, if i may compare, is the Original Maxtrix as Gunbuster 2 is to Reloaded and Revolutions. I liked the later 2 matrix films by the way, but the orginal Matrix by itself left a mark and was freakishly amazing. It couldn't be topped. And it wasn't, or if you argue it was, it wasn't by much. In the same way, FLCL still remains much better than what i've seen in this 1st ep. Let's hope Gun 2 is just an underdog and gets its second wind soon.
Basic Deal:
LIke FLCL and want more FLCL? Watch!
LIke original Gunbuster OVA and want more of that? You'll be disappointed, at least with the 1st ep.

| Based on episode 1 it seem to be another useless and awful sequel. The first Gunbuster serie was a real gem, one of the best ova series ever made. It was a majestic dark sci-fi drama with a superbe and sad story, unforgetable characters and THE BEST CONCLUSION EVER for an anime. So what about Gunbuster 2? I totally disagree with the viewer, this sequel doesen't deserve praise.
The +:
The animation is incredible, better than the first series an at a level you could expect for Gainax.
The -:
Turn a masterpiece sci-fi drama into a cheap low-quality sci-fi mecha comedy with a lot of fan service is a total crime. The story seem secondary to the bad-ass gags, unrealistic mecha (unoriginal, they seem to be out of Giant Robo) fighting and the character doesn't seem to had any kind of depness. Souless compare to the original series. I wish the comedy element will fade away in the next episodes and it will shine like the original series, cuz if it stay a brainless comedy like this until the end, it would be one of the worst sequel ever made, next to Full metal Panic Fumoffu, Tenchi GPX, Onegai Twin and Hack Dusk.

| I cant remember when I enjoyed a anime this much. There is a heavy FLCL influence here.
I loved Gunbuster and this feels like FLCL visits Gunbuster. It also IMHO keeps FLCL's level of comedy.

| omg this is SOMETHING!
waited for this anime since May, finally watched the first ep, and I say 'this is the best one of 2004 so far' (for my taste)
***for Top1:Gunbuster fans***
GAINAX said this is sequal in the meaning of the concept and idea, not the story or charactors... which means, this anime will include tons of homage and parody
***for ppl who never watched Top1***
u don't have to watch Top1 to watch this, but if you watch it, u will get some ideas (like parodies)
---Parody/pun i found---
1) Tearing off her cloth (Top1:6th ep)
2) Inazuma Kiiiiiiiiiick (Top1:1st ep)
3) Nono:"I am topless" -> topless=1)special space army division(where Raruku is joined in), 2)bikini w/o bra... (Nono)
