A short and very cliché OAV. Still cute and filled with nude shots. Not the worst I have seen, but nothing memorable either.

RE: Cutie Honey combines innocent, shoujo like characters (well, at least the female characters are innocent) and premise with eyefulls of ecchi, not unlike Gunbuster 2 (it even has the not-sure-if-they're-lesbains-or-just-really-affectionate-friends thing going). It is seriously the strangest combination in anime, and if you're caught watching it, it's hard to decide if the ecchi is more embarassing, or the pink, sometimes heart shaped attacks named Honey-something.

If you have a thick hide, or if you lock yourself in your room while you watch it, there's plenty to enjoy. I've never seen the original Cutey Honey, but Gainax did a good job of capturing just enough of the 60's-70's anime feel, often taking jabs at the dumb looking animation techniques they often used. While it's vaguely inspired by the old look, it has the modern gainax comedy feel to it. The screen is always full of movement and explosions and whatnot. In a word, it looks kinda trippy, in the same way FLCL does, but more so. It's pretty slick, and it's totally eye candy.

Most of the BGM's are melodically based on the opening song, and the others are 60's sounding electric guitar pieces with women singing "ba" and "bop" Austin Powers style. The opening and ending songs seem more like pop music from the 80's or early 90's (retro still, but a different kind of retro i guess), both of which are upbeat, and fit very well despite the style difference. The 60's girl chant BGMs always put a smile on my face, and the opening theme, as well as the BGMs based on it, are infectious, embarassing as that may be.

This is a 3 episode OVA, so it's to be expected that there won't be many character focused subplots going around. The whole thing is focused on Honey's conflict with the panther claw organization, and sadly, the premise as a whole is kind of dumb. The general story seems pretty serious, and the jokes are farther inbetween as the show moves onward, but it's not exactly a dramatic or even interesting story. The biggest weakness in RE: Cutie Honey is the story. Where this OVA excells is the comedy, and general amusing design, but the plot takes several corny turns, all of which feel unnatural not only because the scenes are exceptionally cheesy, but also because the mood established in the first episode is completely different.

The characters are simple, which is to be expected from a 3 episode OVA, especially one based on a 70's series, but even down the to minor characters, they're likable, and together they form a whole, if a little generic cast. Honey is a dreamy, cutesy kind of character, while Aki is stern and more businessy, though not without her softer side, and what anime is not complete without the perverted guy? There is a very notable flaw in the cast though. Honey comes across at first as a feminine, sexy character, but throughout most of the series, she has the innocence of a preteen. This also makes the ecchi a little bit weird. She's totally innocent for most of the series, so it's not like she tries to use sex appeal or anything, her cloths just seem to come off in all the right places in every fight. In fact, given her pre-pubescent attitude, it feels kinda wrong. The ecchi is just unneccessary and pointless when it's not used for comedy or any actual purpose for the characters. I have to say, it's at least a little less weird than the loli-ecchi in Gunbuster 2, another gainax remake with many similarities to RE: Cutie Honey.

You would think that the corny story as well as the generic cast would ruin an anime, but RE: Cutie Honey just has so much going for it. It's not hard to overlook most of the story and still enjoy this anime. It's really the new school/old-school atmosphere that's enthralling anyway. The music and animation are top notch as well, so what this anime lacks in story and characters, it more than makes up for in charm.

This is a very good anime and its really the best ecchi anime I have seen. This anime is more of dimentia+70's theme done in 2004 which is very very good. Great graphics and sound and quite an acceptable story line.

When getting a Gainax anime about which you know absolutely nothing…anything may be expected. I have a genuine respect for the courage of this studio to “boldly go where none have gone before”, sort of speaking and RE: Cutie Honey is what I would come to call ‘a Gainax work’: bold, outrageous, introspective at times and entertaining because of quite a set of wrong reasons.

From a completely insane plot line to the insane characters, RE:CH is a thrill to go through, best compared to FLCL in terms of achieving comedy. It may not be as random, it may not be as insane and it may simply try to take itself too serious as the finale approaches…but it’s a fun ride all the way through.

As I researched this 120 min OVA I found out about the classic Cutie Honey series from way back in the 1970s; anime of which I never heard before, let alone catch even a glimpse of it. But, the aged origins are quite transparent in the OVA. Gainax did a bang-up job in making a anime by the standards of the year 2000 in terms of graphics but it kept the same way of animating the characters as you’d see in an old anime (more on this a bit later however).

Add in a lot of the studio’s bold style and spice it all up with a dash of James Bond and the anime is ready to either sink of float, just like all other Gainax works.
Whoever may be willing enough to get over RE:CH’s extreme sexual content, extreme jokes, somewhat goofy characters, totally inane plot and absurd action may just find a comedy that hides quite a bit of substance, even if the time it has is too little. But, when do OVAs have time to develop?

Certainly not now, certainly not ever…

I never watch any CUTEY HONEY, this is my first one.

Animation is a little bold but I guess it suite the anime well. I like the ost the most. It sound like 007 theme to me. Even this is just short 3 ova, the story compress and give us clue to figure thing out like in a full series anime. The story itself is even interesting in my openion and it also make some of the sense. I know it a little a bit nudity but I guess you all already expect that. It have a nice feeling to it with that 2 girls. Crazy stuff happen along the way but it sure was a fun ride.

Simply amazing. Very clean animation that is snappy and exciting. Colors are very vibrant and the action is very fast paced. This is Gainax at it's ecchi best. Jazzy, upbeat music very cool updates of classic Honey. Although 3 episodes worked very well for it, I can't help but want more!

Just absolutely wow, I am stunned. After watching the 1973 original and the live action, I can say for sure that GAINAX hit the nail straight on the hammer with this. Even if they're still in their 2001-2005 ecchi arc of animation, they did a dang good job making this.

The story is condensed into a mere 3 episodes, perfect for this fast paced storyline. The 1973 version lacked that speed, and was a little too goofy in all the wrong places. The live-action...well, it was a special, so only one. Funny, but it didn't involve the same storyline event-by-event.

The two things about this remake that I love the most have to be the music [Kumi Koda and Horie Yui, anyone? That's a 10 right there.] and the animation style. A previous reviewer is right: this is a tribute to retro cartoons with fewer but super brilliant colors.

The storyline/characters are the same as the live action movie (which came after this anyway), so if you watched it, you don't have to confuse yourself with the 1973 version. It's roughly the same, the story nearly identical. --addendum: you've seen one, you've seen them all. Just better (or updated) animation the next time around.

Summary:
This is classy. This is a tribute. This is awesome. The fan worship may be over the top, but what do you think you're watching? (And this is the fourth reincarnation...) This has got what it takes to deserve a 9+.

This anime was very enjoyable. It had a classy feel, and the soundtrack fit or set the mood perfectly. It was fast paced, and the ecchi was not shallow, but fun. There were no lame excuses to come up with ecchi scenes, they just fit in.
With only 3 episodes you would expect the story to be weak, and the characters as well, but thats not true at all. Its true the story was not the greatest, but the character development was outstanding, much more then you would expect.
Definatly worth the time and effort to obtain and watch!

In the near future the group Panther Claw is causing trouble in Tokyo. It's becoming too much for the police to handle, even with the help of Inspector Aki Natsuko. A vigilante is showing her up, taking down Panther Claw members left and right. This girl is Kisaragi Honey, better known as the fighter of love, Cutie Honey!

Re: Cutie Honey is yet another retelling of the Cutey Honey series, the 6th by my count including Cutey Honey, Shin Cutey Honey, Cutey Honey Flash, the Cutey Honey Flash movie, and Cutie Honey (live action). You could be forgiven for thinking this is just warmed over goods, but you shouldn't. Re: Cutie Honey is easily the best thing GAINAX has touched since Furi Kuri four years ago, and easily the best version of Cutey Honey to date.

Picture Furi Kuri crossed with Lupin III, combined with the Cutey Honey universe and a heaping amount of GAINEX ecchi thrown in, and you've got Re: Cutie Honey. If you love the random off the wall comedy of FLCL, this'll be a laugh riot. I was laughing myself silly from the very opening to the ending credits of Ep1. From the hilariously useless and happy police force to Honey's costumes, the laughs are non stop. Ep2 proves the series has real depth and heart as well as laughs, taking a more serious tone and pulling it off flawlessly.

If you love the 70's style character designs of Lupin III, the animation is perfection. Old style character designs mixed with today's animation quality and a very healthy dash of insanity makes for some of the most dynamic animation I've seen in years. It's almost what the Powerpuff Girls would be like as a real anime targeted to older audiences. Brightly colored and highly stylized, it's as hyper as anime gets and another great WTF classic. Not to be outdone by all the visuals, the soundtrack features nothing less than brand new songs by Koda Kumi.

GAINAX is known for their ecchi anime, and R:CH is no exception. Filled with wall to wall nudity and tongue-in-cheek poses, it's more like fan worship than fan service. It's all in good fun though, and very much aware of just how ecchi it is. Many anime try to make over the top ecchi work and fail miserably at it, but Re: Cutie Honey is not one of them. It works wonderfully here, and it's just another of the shows many charms. It's not hentai, but it's definitely for older audiences only.

Slurp! Sorry, I havd to wipe some ot the drool ftom my keyboagd. Tpo slipperu to write. That's better.

Cutie Honey has everything your average entertainment package needs: cute women, hilarious humor, fast-paced action, kinky enemies, adorable policemen... starts to get pretty weird, eh? Believe me, it's all that and more.

CH managed to make me laugh from the first second on. Especially the first episode was unbelievably funny. I thought I'd never make it to end. The following episodes weren't as gut ripping but started roll out the story. Which is pretty good for such a clear fan-service series. In Cutie Honey's twisted universe the age-old world conquering plan works fine with all the weirdness added.

That weirdness coming mainly from the characters. The cute and lovable Cutie, cool and lethal Na-chan and the mysterious Seiji are just the tip of the iceberg. The incredible stuff are the baddies. I was just dying to see what kind of action each of these freaks was able to unleash. And wasn't disappointed. And Cutie fighting them was just awesome. She was simply too lovable for me to remain indifferent and I ended up wishing I had banner to wave for her. And they made a nice story of her and Na-chan's relationship.

All this maniac action is sugar-topped with flashy, cartoony animation that leaves a little to wish for. It's fluid, it's funny, it's alive with color. And music is just the kind jpop that goes with the action. Like the opening, that is literally made for the series and tells everything you need to know. If it gives you instant repulsion, don't bother with the rest of the series.

Honestly, I'm impressed. This is the right way to serve fan-service goodies. For those who dislike women getting their clothes ripped of in fights: stay away! For those who love ecchiness and good action: itadakimasu!

I have never seen the original Cutey Honey, so I can’t really compare how RE: fared with the original, but I did enjoy it stand alone. That I think is what made this show very enjoyable, GAINAX did a great job fitting a good story together in only three episodes. While the first episode was easily my favorite because it was the funniest of the three, the other two did their job in continuing the story and adding a little more drama to it. The animation was very good and clever, with brighter colors they still managed to the character design details in what I would imagine the classic looked like. The music was very catchy, the right songs where always in the right spot and they definitely added to Cuite Honey, also I really liked the VAs, I am a big fan of Yui Horie and I think she did a great job as Cutie Honey. The story was well executed, there was some mystery among a few of the characters that I thought was well executed. Overall, this was a very enjoyable watch and well worth the time waiting.

Well, there's boobs, and then Honey beating the snot out of some stupid-looking villain, and boobs, and then girls making out, and then...uh...boobs. And that, in a sentence, is Re: Cutie Honey. Honestly, though, what more do you expect from something influenced by Go Nagai? Since I haven't seen the original, I can't really offer an objective comparison between the two, but this was offered as an independent story that put forth enough information for me to understand perfectly well (or at least to the extent that I could come into it feeling confident). Despite the fact that the anime received 16 absolutely glowing reviews, I was a little skeptical, and though watching Re: Cutie Honey wasn't a total waste of time I feel somewhat cheated.

Re: Cutie Honey set rather high standards for itself, ones that would be very difficult to accomplish in the span of a three-episode OVA (though in its defense they're long episodes). Unfortunately, because of this I found the plot to be dry, flimsy and stupid. I greatly enjoyed the first episode, full of light-hearted fun and surprisingly entertaining Honey hijinks, but sadly these are quickly removed in favor of boobs and absolutely horrible drama. The problem with this anime trying to be serious and emotional is that it is in all effect a parody of the original Cutie Honey, and trying to impose such stern feelings on it makes everything seem totally mismatched. Furthermore, I really didn't find myself caring about any of the characters at all, which diluted the drama to a great extent as well. Honey's okay, but Natsume was a really boring desperate cop, and the rest of the characters were just unmemorable or unimportant. Finally, and though I don't really understand why, I had trouble keeping my attention span in check as I watched. I never got through a full episode of R:CH in one sitting, regardless of the fact that I am very patient and I hate leaving in the middle of an episode. The problem was that I came in expecting some interesting action and I got way too much more robot angst than I had accounted for.

Re: Cutie Honey isn't a terrible waste of time; I just don't find it as good as everyone else seems to say. Fun, for sure, but for all intensive purposes it's an ecchi/parody that really didn't work when it tried to turn itself into a drama. Let's just leave it at the fact that I enjoyed the first episode a lot more than the other two.

RE: Cutey Honey had all the right ingredients to make it a great action/comedy to watch. The animation was superb and the story pacing was nice, with some very interesting art styles at times. I really enjoyed most all the characters and the groovey soundtrack, even the fan service seems to blend in very nicely. CH appears to have nothing annoying or crappy about it, at least IMO. This was definetily one heck of a joy ride, I suggest owning this one on dvd when it hits American stores. Mark yet another great success for GAINAX!

Re: Cutey Honey is an unbelievably fun adaptation of Go Nagai's classic magical girl show. While the show's ending is a little weak compared to the beginning, it still is an utterly awesome show with some amazing animation and a great sense of humor. Gainax did a fine job with this series.

In this remake of the popular 1973 Cutey Honey, of course the animation is much improved, I'm glad they left the character designs alone and the sound is also much improved, the best villian from this remake has to be Sister Jill, she is much more improve character and more enigmatic than before. Great new look for Honey fans!

2 words: EYE CANDY. if you like ecchi, you'll love this. if you hate ecchi, stay away :)
koda kumi does a great job of covering the theme song, and the sound effects are smashing.
the storyline is... well... what did you expect? shakespeare?
the characters are all great, but the villains look retarded (not as retarded as they do in the original, but still, well... retarded).
and this is highly enjoyable... IF you can stand ecchi

I still like to refer to the 1973 Cutie Honey as it was original and one of my favorites before watching mainstream anime. Cutie Honey was an idea ahead of it's time, the idea of echi before the term was coined echi and most importantly the superboobed super villians and cliche' baddie spies and music video fights, with Honey turning to everyone. It just doesn't get better than this.

Excessive is not excessive enough? Honey is android, her innocence is really what makes this show dazzling. Add comedy, add friend who wants to put her in jail and more than excessive fan service that seems more that appropriate given the circumstances. In Honey there isn't a dull moment. The show just burst in one mode -- Frantic!

I just want to pop in and say that Hideaki Anno is well on his way to redeeming himself as a director, after what IMHO was the disaster he turned Eva and KareKano into. If he manages not to screw up the ending again, he'll have made a worthy rival to the masterpiece that was FLCL. Until I've seen Ep, 3, though, I'm reserving judgement. Hideaki has destroyed series before, and I don't trust him not to do it again.
