its great. it has almost all kind of "interests" of anime--violence, romance, horror, sci-fi, psychology and etc. but no mecha.

I had originally spent more than two hours carefully enumerating every reason why Elfen Lied is the best anime ever. At the end, I felt a little unsatisfied--since, after all, a hundred people before me have done the same thing. But what else could I do? I liked Elfen Lied. Then I noticed that, out of the top 10 reviews on this website, TWO exist only to bash Efen Lied, and none are in favor of it. I thought, what could possibly be going through those reviewers' minds? Is everyone else on animenfo really *that* wrong? So, instead of rewriting what you can read in a dozen posts beneath mine, I decided to counter some of the points raised in those other reviews. Hopefully that will make me feel better...and maybe help you decide if you should watch it, since whether you'll like this anime will depend largely on whether you're like me or like those two "top" reviewers.

So, from Geezer's review that 21 people found helpful:
'Bloody cute' like my old uncle would say. The easiest way to attract attention to any piece of media or fiction nowadays is to add sex and violence, it seems. While there's nothing wrong with either, it's a sad fact they are most often used only to cover up the lack of substance, not to enhance the work. Elfen Lied is no exception.
Whenever I tell somebody about EL, I am always careful to introduce it thus: "You should only watch Elfen Lied if violence and nudity are not likely to distract you from plot and character". I would never say EL lacks substance, but more on that later. In making this statement, Geezer seems to imply that the violence and 'sex' in EL are only to appeal to the prurient interest. However, human cruelty was a very important theme in EL; at the very least, the gore helped express that theme. Furthermore, I don't remember very much 'sex' at all--sure there was nudity, but this fact may surprise you: all people have privates. I honestly didn't get from Elfen Lied the things that I would expect to get from fanservice.
The artwork is good, but the animation is deceivingly simple; the soundtrack is beautiful, but the acting weak
Anyone considering watching EL must take into account that ARMS is not Sunrise/Gainax. Before EL, they mostly made hentai. Naturally, a show like EL could never be made by Sunrise/Gainax, because old geezers (sorry) and similar folk would protest and get it censored. Just for having the guts to create this, I think ARMS deserves a 10 for animation/sound.
Elfen Lied was the previous internet-mega-hype anime (before Haruhi), a 'must see' 'masterpiece' that would reportedly 'change the lives of its viewers forever' (I'm not exaggerating here). Now, with the hype dead and new & better series becoming more popular, no one remembers Elfen Lied, bar a few loyal fans. And for a reason.
Not only is this somewhat irrelevant, but it's false to say no one remembers it. I wasn't around for the hype--I watched it the first time at around the same time Geezer wrote his review. But unlike him, I found that it challenged me to think hard about the way people function, and through this, it really did change me. Actually, I find myself changed fairly often by things I read or hear...I guess I'm just more defective than most people. Sorry. You can read somebody else's review now.

Anyway, I should note that Haruhi, from Kyoto, should probably have a much larger hype-machine than little studio ARMS.
[...] a stupid little fantasy setting. 'Fantasy' not in a Tolkienesque way, but in how irrationally the world of Elfen Lied functions. [...] the outright stupidity of the characters is used as a melodramatic plot device so often that it weighs the brilliance of the original concept down. Deep.
I'm not sure I would have called Tolkien's world 'rational'. In fact, I'm not even sure what Geezer is looking for when he criticizes the 'irrationality' of EL. To me, the importance of realism is that readers can place themselves in the reality and imagine themselves making the same decisions as the characters, and then, seeing the decisions the characters actually made, they can believe the decisions were reasonable. In this way, they can figure out what's going on in the characters' heads and sympathize with them. I had no trouble doing any of these things while watching EL. Sure the background, the situation, and the personalities were set up for drama, but that's how it is in most good anime. I have a hard time agreeing that the characters were stupid--they were just faced with incredibly hard decisions, and so they're sometimes indecisive.
A cute mutant 'elf' with a dual personality disorder and terrible powers befriends a loser kid living with his female relative / childhood friend, and an oh-so-tragic love triangle is formed. Add some stereotype side characters and a bunch of evil guys who want to get the mutant elf back for some hideous purposes and you'll get a dozen plus episodes of angst and oh so tragic flashbacks.
The sarcasm makes me think Geezer didn't find it tragic...that's somewhat unfortunate for him, because I enjoyed this part of the plot quite a bit. I could imagine myself having struggled very hard in Kouta's shoes, especially since (unlike in the average love triangle) Lucy's powers mean Kouta's choices have consequences far beyond himself. This, IMO, puts EL a step above the average romance love triangle. I also fail to see how the side characters are stereotypes--Nana and Mayu were childish (as they were intended), learned rapidly, and were downright lovable. Kurama had complicated internal conflicts that played with all of his decisions. Furthermore, all the important characters changed through the course of the story. The rest of the characters just didn't get enough screen time to be developed, although I should mention that Bando, while he may seem stereotypical in the anime, actually does a great deal more in the manga after the point where the anime ends.
It is targeted at emo kids up to 16-18 years of age; once these people grow up they shall notice how shallow the series is. Which is exactly why Elfen Lied is no longer half as popular as it was just a few years ago: the people have matured and seen through the manipulative melodrama of the series.
This, I will agree, is a failing--for they clearly missed their target. I am neither of these, yet I enjoyed it anyway. And wait...don't we pay these people to manipulate our emotions? My fiction teacher loved to stress that "fiction writers are just professional liars."
Wait! What about all the social commentary Elfen Lied was so famous for? It tackles such difficult topics as bullying and racism, doesn't it? Well, no, it doesn't really. Barely mentioning social problems is not social commentary, and taking the easiest, most melodramatic way out of every controversial situation is pretty much the same as avoiding those topics alltogether - if not worse.
I beg to differ. Bullying and racism are only mentioned tangentially, but other ideas are dealt with more directly; for example, whether we should ever give up on another person's ability to change, or whether we should stop caring about and loving people who do evil. Of course, I can imagine many people I know ardently refusing to consider these questions (e.g. libertarians), which is my theory for why some people can call this anime shallow. But more importantly, I don't think any work of fiction can do what Geezer is expecting--developing an issue and giving a firm argument in one way or another. The medium is just too vague. I count the philosophical value of an anime by how many questions it brings to open minds. EL brings plenty.

Switching over to Haihaine's 13-helpful review:
In the end, both the story and the symbolism is drowned in the gore and nudity, and it wasn't all that good to begin with. Perhaps the reason why some people prize the story, is that it's surprising it's even decent considering the shitload of gore and fanservice (Berserk, anyone?), but if you took away those two key elements, I doubt this one would make it into top #20
As with slashdot, people on animenfo apparently get modded up for making fun of their host. Unlike Haihaine, I believe Animenfo is much better than other sites terms of not having shallow ratings, since raters are forced to write a review and to rate on several dimensions. And you'll notice, EL does much better here than on those other sites. Again, I do think that this story would be much less without the gore. In fact, let me turn this issue on its head: I'm incredibly frustrated with stories like Hunter x Hunter, where a whole bunch of 'villains' die (who, if you think about it, probably weren't really aware of what they were getting themselves into), and there's nothing at all to make you feel the gravity of what's happened.

And I don't know what symbolism he's talking about. I didn't see any in EL--at least, not any that functioned the way I think of symbolism functioning in fiction.

Skipping a lot of stuff in Haihaine's post...sorry...much of this is similar to what Geezer said. Haihaine praises some form of 'symbolism' again...but I don't see the symbolism, so I won't comment.
Now, the story itself is hardly top notch. The premise is: a superior race has risen, programmed to destroy all humanity, and the original, Lucy, gets sniped in the head, suffering a slight concussion and consequently develops a split-personality.
At this point, we have to question how carefully Haihaine actually watched this, since there's three misleading, if not downright incorrect, statements in this summaty. First, the race hasn't really 'risen'--more, a few individuals have appeared. In fact, there isn't even evidence that the DIclonii in the story are the first; if you read the manga, you'll find that they aren't. Second, there's really no clear evidence that they're programmed to destroy humanity; in fact, one of the questions that this anime wants you to ask yourself is whether Lucy's hatred is caused by the way humans have treated her. Third, the split personality is certainly not caused by the concussion, since it's present in the flashbacks too.

Other than that, this is decent one-sentence summary--although readers should remember that just about any story will sound unoriginal if summarized in a single sentence. To expand a little, members of the superior race can tear people apart with their minds. One of Lucy's personalities has a deep-seated hatred for all humans; the other has no memories and can't even talk, but harbors no such hatred. Lucy is taken in by a group of ordinary people who truly care about her, and who eventually realize they have connections with her past,
The gore fits, but feels like it's there to pleasure madmen rather than to symbolize the savage nature of Diclonius.
It's hard to argue that it's only about the savage nature of the Diclonii--not all the Diclonii actually hurt people, and not all the gore was caused by Diclonii (in fact, you could argue that most of the gore was 'caused' by the institute studying the Diclonii). And it's not symbolism, damn it! (Hack...Cough...Ahem)
Abandoned children, feelings of revenge, powerful aliens and whatnot have all been done before, [...]
By this argument, Death Note is a detective story. That's been done before. I argue that none of these things have been done better than in EL, particularly the compassion you'll feel for the characters...if you let yourself, that is. Actually, I should qualify my statement about EL doing everything better...they didn't do aliens better...since, see, there were no aliens in EL.
[...] the characters are still so unrealistic it stabs you right in whatever part of your brain that makes you not care. Actually, the only realistic thing about it is Kouta's supressed memories. Nana is also quite interesting, but other characters are confusing and their actions and reactions are largely without reason.
I think EL was supposed to make you care about people, so I guess forcefully removing 'the part of your brain that makes you not care' would a good thing...although you'd think it'd be easier to make you care than the way they did it...having that knife fly out of the TV and into my brain kinda surprised me.

In other news, Haihaine says the characters actions are without reason, but I would like to see anybody give a formal justification for any action they've taken. I accepted a long time ago that (as per existentialism) we as humans just have to pick something to live for. Obviously Lucy picked something different than Haihaine. I would like to re-emphasize that I thought all of the characters' decisions were realistic.
You'll enjoy this anime if:
A) You love lots of gore
B) You love fanservice
C) You love pseudo-intellectual plots
D) You like all of the above
Damn it, This is the second time I've been called a pseudo-intellectual (since I don't think I fit A or B...). Anybody know where I can find a *real* intellectual to learn from? Haihaine doesn't answer my emails...

Anyway, hope I didn't bore you. Sorry for writing the longest review ever.

I do think Elfen Lied is slightly overrated but it is still worth checking out. The first scene is really intense. And you'll be wondering what I'm talking about, but trust me it does drop off.

The problem with Elfien Lied is some parts are unbelievable, like someone losing all their limbs and surviving or a huge corporation not being able to find a couple of kids in a small area.

That being said this anime isn't garbage. It is a solid anime and worth watching. The plot is original and the action can range from average to great. Plus interesting characters. I say if you're an anime fan 18 and up give it a shot. Just to let you know there is nudity.

Elfen Lied, this anime is amazingly impressive.
Never, I have never seen a story like this before..Everything were great. After three months, I am still in its effect.

I started to watching it by a friend's advice.
After I saw some ecchi content and violence, I thought to stop watching it..But didn't do until episode 4.After this episode, only thing i said was "OMG"..

For getting full points from me, a title must have a "perfection", and I'm sure it has this..

( Never gave anything 10 points before lol )

If you are 18+ years old and think you can understand, I say, just watch!

I watched this show before I ever heard of AnimeNFo, and when I watched it, I loved it. I was 15 when I saw it.

Then the day came when I had nothing to do and no anime in particular to watch so I decided to watch some of my odd favorites(I have a list of all the animes I'm watching and have watched). Elfen Lied was at the top of the list, so I was like, "Hey, I remember loving that, I'll watch it again."

Let me say this, I must have been stupid, an idiot, an ignorant fool to have given this anime my own personal perfect 10 in my list(yes, I rate the animes as well and this was one of only three animes that have gotten that ten, out of 62 animes).

I guess I've matured to see past the boobs n blood(sounds like a vampire porno..hehe boobs n blood). In all honesty this is not the anime I thought it was two years ago. Maybe it's because I've seen newer better animes, or I've matured, either way this is one of those "middle-ground" animes.

It took me some time before I got to seeing this serie, and I have to admit, it"s a piece of quality.

In short :
A nice story with some great characters, very good music, and well, that special touch of emotion which makes anime so great. In the end the story really tears you apart, it really made me quiet and feel sorry for some of them.
I can say that this anime rightfully got it's place in the anime top.

Despite the huge hype and greatness of this anime, I was incredibly disappointed when I saw Elfen Lied. Supposedly the great anime that everyone had been talking about, I was completely let down; maybe because it was a little overrated for me. But there was still those huge amounts of violence and gore that I was promised. In my opinion what Elfen Lied lacked was a real great story. These robot killing machines were nothing else. The few background episodes only left me wanting more out of the story. Maybe it was only because there were only 14 episodes and I am more of an 'engaging' story kind of person, this anime did not do it's job of creating a great story.

I must say that even though that I have to admit there is no anime like it, it still doesn't make it great. Original as it is, and as loved as it is, I hated how not everything was explained. This is the kind of anime that relies more of the viewer to feel something through the emotions of the characters. I cannot say that I was pleased with this way. After finishing it I said to myself "That was all?".

But the fighting scenes sure were great. But I still felt distated and unsatisfied after finishing Elfen Lied.

elfen lied...if i could describe this anime to you quickly i would say, have you heard of the phrase "and now for something completely different"? elfen lied i have not seen to much anime, enough to mark myself as an anime geek, but not too much to say that this is the most original thing i have evwar seen, but i have only seen 8 total seris of anime (1 of witch i only made it halfway through and stoped) and i haven't seen too much like it. now the beggining, its the classic, shit is going down and they explain what happend later kind of deal. now it oppens in some kind of research facility were a guard is staring at somthing with the most scared face he could be the scream mask, with one arm on his body the other on the floor, and this person thats tied up somhow gets untied and then BULLETS FLYIN, HEADS GETTIN DECAPITATED, *dramatic dialouge* MORE CARNAGE MORE VIOLENCE!!! then the person about to escape and a sniper on her theres a guy next to the sniper that sais "dont miss if you miss she wont give you a second chance" and he hits her but he nicks her she survives but shes bloody. now the whole thing settels down, now a guy is moving to this place to go to a university, were he meets his cousin for the first time in a while, then they find this person who was shot and escaped from that place the other nite, but instead of ripping them appart shes all inocent and only knows the word myu, and they notice she has these horns on her head (im not talking giant friggin devil horns more like two pointed bumps on her head) and this is were they start teaching her to be more human or normal, and they name her myu cause thats all she can say (i wasn't gonna say this but. guy moving to a random town to study? finds a girl in a random setting? she has horns on her head? names her by the only word she can say?...can you say chobits? and just a note, chobits showed up in 2002, elfen lied 2004) now then too much detail from her is spoilers, BUT theres a point were a team of special forces tracks her town and BEFORE they put a bullet into her head she goes all badass and starts tearin people apart and sais more than myu, now from there spoilers. with that out of the way, one thing i liked about this particulare anime, is theres none eyes buggeling arms flailing so fast it kinda leaves a trail for a second kind of nonsence, i was suprised this anime broke a small anime sterotype, but the only thing i do remeber of stang things was when myu thinks she was doing a good job she smiled and her eyes grew a little and *TWINKEL!* thats all i remeber and i was suprised this anime did that. and this anime is NOT i repeat NOT FOR KIDS!!! for one thing this anime if you find it on youtube it is the only videos on youtube that has bewbs and occaionily vagina and has not been removed, and also if you dont like the sight of gore, dont watch this now the most gory part that i can remeber is...when a guy got shot several times, was thrown on the floor, got his arm torn the f**k off, and his eyes got stabed out! and he was left alive! to bleed it out, the guy survives it though, so in short picture a guy lying on the ground eyes gone and one arm both bleeding like hell screaming for his life...picture that, and if your okay with it then you wont mind seeing somthing like that almost every episode. now i will say this right now do you like happy endings to an anime, ex. rizelmine, chobits or love hina? if you hate sad endings aviod this anime like the black freakin plauge, because its just really sad i wanted to kill myself! (you think im kidding dont you?) like this person gets killed, this person loses what he's been trying to do for the whole seris, this guy meets his daughter for the first time but within a few days are both dead in a violent explosion, it just...its really...just stay awya if you dont like sad endings, but if you like, blood gore violence and in the words of roman in gta IV, BIG GOD DAMN TITES then yesh watch this. also on a side note, make sure your parents cant find out what your watching cause if they see limbs flyin off chicks in the newd, then its not my fault your in trouble!

Elfen Lied was an intense anime. I'm usually not into serious or action-packed anime (I'm an Azumanga fan), but this anime really captivated me. I knew from the first episode that this was going to be way different from any other anime I've seen. Theres people killing and getting killed a lot, and in between theres soft and innocent moments. The thing that got me in this anime was the intense emotions, I felt fear, happiness and actually cried on episode 5 because it was so depressing.

The story was also really good. The story kept me interested and entertained, it was sort of like watching a murder mystery because you had to piece together information to figure out exactly how the characters are connected to each other.
Overall i thought this anime was really really good and it's one of my favorites, but its definitely not for the light hearted or young audience.

At first I wasn't sure if I could get through the entire anime because the first few episodes really scared me off. There is an excessive amount of blood, gore, and boobage. As you go through the episodes, the gore isn't as bad as the first few episodes. I still think the extra nudity was unnecessary. It kind of makes me think they just did that to appeal to hormonal guys.

Kudos to the music! The main song, Lilium, is very beautiful. I loved it the first time I heard it. Admittedly, they use that song over and over again. However, because it is so beautiful, I didn't mind one bit.

Character development was okay. The background stories between some characters were good, while others seemed to rely on cliches and archetypes.

I wasn't exactly satisfied with the ending. Everything seemed to magically work out, yet somehow, at the same time, it also felt like there was so much we still did not know about. The story itself is very fascinating, but the way it was pieced together wasn't too convincing or satisfying.

I was really excited to watch this anime at first, because the story drew me in right away and everyone seemed to be raving about it. However, I have to say I'm a little disappointed. It is most definitely overrated in my opinion. Good anime, but not the best of all time.

While extremely popular, Elfen Lied doesn't live up to expectations in the technical department, but in terms of story and character development it does, save a few cliche bimbos who ruin it all. A close adaption to the manga, Elfen Lied is an anime worth checking out.

I should start by saying that the animation was amazing. I loved how awesome the blood and the body parts looked. This would be great for any violence lover.

I absolutely love the music from this show. The opening was marvelous! It goes perfect with the theme of the anime.

This had an awesome story to it. It is very interesting having a girl with two personalities. I enjoy watching this anime very much.

I would defiantly recommend this to anyone especially if you like ecchi, violence, blood, and love-romance stories.

This is a solid anime that only suffers because of the short run it had. With only 12 episodes to develop the plot a lot of character development and plot development was accelerated and I found myself wishing I could have gotten to know the characters more. Other than that its a great series

A sad anime is refreshing every once and a while, but Elfen Lied delivers its story in a mediocre fashion. I loved how the music complemented the story so well, but the blood and gore were unrealistic, and the character development was rather odd. Elfen Lied is a about a girl named Lucy who breaks out of the lab that is confining her. She is a human sub-species called a Diclonius, who is able to control a power that allows her to violently kill anyone she wants dead. She meets a boy named Kota after she escapes and begins to live with him and his cousin Lucy. For a 13-episode long anime, the story was packed together nicely. I just wish it had been more cohesive.

I was quite bit suprised. This is maybe the best series what I have ever seen, animation was very good. Music is very well choosed, Plot is nicely wicked and very addictive.
It's true there is lots of blood, violence and other that kind of usual stuff, but then ending crowned hole thing.
Main male character, I kinda hated him. Some kind of wussy (again... sigh).
But the Female main character "Lucy" was more of my liking and she was only reason why I ever liked this series.
Ou... I was really suprised the quality of english dubbed version of this, almost better than japanese. Usualy Dupped versions are so lame and annoying to watch.

I can recommend this almost everyone, except most sensitive natured people ;P

I found this to be a frighteningly visceral anime with a fragile, beautiful love story woven in between fantastic gore. I felt more different emtions from Nyu/Lucy than I have from any main character in a series. Not for the feint of heart when it comes to gore, but not the worst I've seen either. I was moved by the ending, and was overall thoroughly satisfied with the emotion reflected throughout the series!

At first, this show just looked like a bloodbath, repeatedly so. Then after a the first few episodes, an intricate story develops relating the past of a college boy and a girl he met when he was younger. I do not classify this as a horror, just a drama with a lot of blood.
