This was one of the earlier OVAs that I encountered once I started collecting anime, and it still ranks amoung my favorite series. The overall quality of animation and story have held up over time.

This is a good series to try if you want to see just how imaginative and interesting the stories in anime can get, without collecting large numbers of DVDs as it definitely explored new realms of storytelling.

I really really liked this show and i think i does a great job in taking a "cliche" story and making it quite enjoyable.

The story beggins commonly enough ; a boy discovers a beutiful woman in some ruins found on his school and gets transported, with his teacher, rival and semi love-interest to the magical world of el Hazard....at first when you see people react to Makoto, the main character, you'd think he would be some legendary savior of sorts...but actually, he looks a lot like a missing princess, so they make him dress up like a girl and do some jobs that the missing princess must do, much to his dissaproval.
The teacher and girl that came with him join him in his quest, and his rival joins the "bad guys", a bunch of pretty funny and dumb insects.

The story takes a lot of interesting twists and it has a nice ending, though i did get a bit confused by some stuff regarading a time paradox situation, but it was probably because i missed some info while i was switching languages or something :).

The animation is pretty good, could be better, but i will give it a 10 nonetheless, because it's 11 years old, and still looks WAAAAAY better than some recent shows...

On the other hand, the landscapes are majestic, colorful and gorgeus and the characters designs are pretty neat.

The music is pretty nice, especially the intro, but nothing to scream about.

Characters are instantly likeable, and all of them are portrayed perfectly.

I reaaally liked the Katsuhiko Jinnai, the "rival" he was hilarious :)

The only bad thing about the characters is that some secondary chars like Queen Diva, the 3 priestesses and other ones aren't as fleshed out as the could be...we never really know a lot about their pasts, though they are very likeable still :).

In the end, this is a great super enjoyable show, it is very easy to get into and time will just fly by while you see it!

What can I say I absolutly love El-Hazard. This OVA surpassed all expectations I had of it. I thought it would be good, but it has risen to the point where it is now my favorite show. The animation, the story, the characters are all excellent. And all of this played out in a mere seven episodes. Needless to say I am buying the other related series asap. If you want to know why I think this show is so amazing read the rest of my review.

Very beautifully drawn and had a nice story combined with fantasy/comedy/and a little drama. Music had a stunning orchestra from the opening theme music and other sequences on the entire time, truly classy and whimsy on that field. The eye of god and its ordeal had an exquisite originality that had the concept fit the entire storyline. Nanami had spunk that I actually liked, and does a good voice from the Japanese seiyuu. Jinnai was just too great of being a bad guy, and a oddball at the same time. All of the other side characters were also great as well. However, what I loved most about this series is that the fact the three priestesses who are not portrayed as part of the "harem" group, especially Shayla, and actually had a mind of their own and had both a love/hate relationship with Makoto and the other characters who followed along side with him. Honestly, I found this a little better than the Tenchi series, and some of those other comedy/drama ones as well.

And that crazy drunken guy Fujisawa-sensei was a great character that gets a bonus on my book, almost made the whole story worthwhile.

Watching the first episode, it really caught my interest...however, as the story progressed, that interest faded quickly away. I think this is a really overrated series. An overall average series, I guess. The humor was average, the story was kinda...bleh. I was really disappointed.

There was nothing really special about the characters...in that, I felt as though they lacked substance. Ifurita seems so...braindead. Makoto seems like such a generic male lead as well...only this time, he doesn't have interesting side characters to raise the show. The animation is dated and the sound could be better as well.

There is a lot to like about El-Hazard, but there are some things that keep me from enjoying it as much as I wanted to. First off, the characters are great, it's a very good ensemble and they appeal to the viewer. As a comedy, the show also works well, and even during some of the dramatic moments, it can work. My biggest problem is with the length of the series and lightweight story. With some more time the story and characters could have been fleshed better and if the story was taken more seriously it may have been spectacular. All in all it's a good time, but I can't help feeling a little unfulfilled.

I know I'm going to get knock about this but this is what I believe all anime should be like. Funny, caring, thrilling, and action packed. This does in only 7 episodes what many can't do in a full 26. Give you insight on the main characters and develop with the story. Amazing and my favorite of all time

El Hazard is in my opinion a mediocre anime, but it can be either good or bad depending on what you're looking after.

Animation:
Well since it was made in 1995 i'll say the animation is good. The background design that depicts the world of El Hazard is very nice and collorful, with a mixture between Gaian and Arab (when it comes to the Alliance's Kingdom) and Mount Mordor and Bee Hive (Burgom Empire), wich is very nice as i said... The characters are so and so, some are very nice drawned and filled with detail (Infurita, Afura, Mitz) most are so and so, and others are just to simplistic (Jinnai, Fujisawa-sensei)... but still i can't have to many problems with that.

Sound:
Voice acting was good, my favorite would have to be Jinnai wich had the best villain demential laugh ever... I didn't care to much about the Op/Ed themes, but i don't really judge the sound by that.

Story:
The story is Fantasy, a genre that i don't really like, so DO expect many fantastic things to take place... it has many tensioned moments, but mostly it seemed to be fun, easy to understand and relaxing.... it has comedy, super powers, ecchi, some romance and almost no tragedy... Warning, it can get kinda stupid or to cheesy somethimes.

Character:
Well most characters are shallow as you might expect from an anime like this... but that doesn't mean they aren't enjoyable... yeah the main character Makoto is the regular "why can't we all live in peace" and his love Infurita ar kinda stresfull...but the rest of the crew is OK: from Sheyla-Sheyla (wich has an anger management problem), Princess Fatora (wich turns out to be a real insensitive bitch, surprising us all), Fujisawa-sensei (alcoholic, easy going teacher), Aleille (the little lezbo) and my favorite Jinnai (a total lunatic villain highschool student with dreams of conquest and glory, a great sence of humour and the best villain laugh ever.. even dough the reasons behind his actions were totaly stupid).

value and Enjoyement:
Well you might like it or be bored by it, depending on what you're looking for... I recomand this if you just want an entertaining anime without beeing serious, logic or dramatic.

Simply the best in my collection, and I have many. The rating might seem a bit too much, but, lo, read further:

The animation is now a bit old, but at its time it was supreme. AND it's funny. Just try stopping it at scenes with much motion...
I really love the sound. It has many themes for its length, and a certain arabic nights style.
The story contains anything you can want: Romance, comedy, action, fantacy, drama, comedy, lesbians, sci-fy, girls and.. did I mention comedy?
The characters are mostly unique. Some may say they are not developed enough, but it's only 7 episodes, and at least two of them develop more than in many other 26 episode shows.
Really good value out there. You can keep seeing it again and again, without being bored and you always notice new details.
If there was higher than 10 it would go here. With the exeption of one or two scenes,in every other "serious" scene, you can spot hilarious happenings and details, and also there are many "pure" funny scenes.
It is old, but good. The best of the series, with room to spare.

Still reading this? Just see it (again) already. (And when you are bored, try fanfiction:-)

Sadly, the story told through ending credits still photos - glimpses of what the characters do with their lives after the series is over - was just as entertaining, and more interesting, than the story told through the 7 episodes. That of course means the four hour series didn't deliver the goods.
While some of the characters are amusing (Fukisawa sensei, Jinnai's over the top laugh, the lesbian girl), and it's fun to think about what everyone would have been like during a longer, logical (there are instances where you have to question how this writer wasn't fired for turning in work that apparently he wrote in the fifteen minutes before the meeting started), more fleshed out, less formulaic story, in the end it is what it is, and that's... a letdown. There is no character development, NO surprises, character motivation is either absurd (Jinnai), not well explained (main villian, Galus), or, again, formulaic and unsurprising (everyone else).
This seems to be referred to as the best the "El Hazard" namesake has to offer. If so, that's a shame. Again, there's something there, but you don't even feel motivated to imagine a more well done scenario in your head, as the whole point of watching it was so that you could be entertained without having to think. The fact that it doesn't even instill good values - a high school student wants to kill another one who has nothing against him, the enemies have a legitimate beef as their situation seems to be one where they've been unjustly stomped on, and yet they're still punished and never vindicated - is a small but significant complaint as well.
It's a C, C- series. If any of the other "El Hazard" series are longer, I suggest you check those out instead, if the character bios and overall storyline/genre interests you. I wouldn't recommend this one unless you want to kill time.

El Hazard: The Magnificent World has the look and feel of your average anime, with just enough uniqueness to put it above average. More enjoyable than the norm, but not certainly not "Magnificent".

I like it. It's not amazingly deep and engaging, but it is fun. While only running at a meer seven episodes, the show fills out nicely. Imagine beginning with a full season of 26 episodes then chucking all the fillers then seaming what you have left into a continuous story. That's what The Magnificient World is.

El Hazard was a series I always wanted to watch but could never get my hands on. Eventually I did, and I was dissapointed.

The first OVA is compact and well animated for its time, but it proves boring. This flies directly in the face of the fantasy enviroment created here. Specificly because the characters engage in a good deal of cliche humor and never really develop into something you can become attatched to. Perhaps this is because the OVA is limited to seven episodes and feels a bit rushed. Or perhaps its just a lapse in creativity on the part of the writers and character designers. Never the less, El Hazard is a brief romp through an plot retread.

The best thing about this anime is the sound I think. It really brings out the mood and the emotions. Hence, the tears that we read about in the reviews.

I really loved Ifurita's theme song.. Just so hauntingly beautiful. Fits her perfectly. And yes, I did cry at the end. Hey, when you are at school studying and working your ass off on homework, there's a lot of frustration built up okay? Anywways, that's years ago.

I rented the other series from Netflix. I guess it must be the second OAV. Couldnt work pass the first DVD. So definitely get THIS one and the others are probably not worth getting.

El Hazard: The Magnificent World basically tells the story of a group of students and their teacher who have been sent through time and space to an alternate world. Split up and confused, they each take separate roles in this new world that suit their personalities. To make things even more confusing for our heroes and anti-heroes, new found super human abilities from the travel now complicate their lives.

El Hazard is rather creative in some regards, especially when it comes to the super powers, Jinnai, and the Bugrom. I really like how in depth it goes into the Bugrom and their goals, never once opting for a sappy "Maybe I've got it all wrong" speech. Proof that many people find paradise in many different ways. Personally, I found the Bugrom kingdom far more interesting.

The bad news is that while this is called the best of the El Hazard shows, it's really quite average all around. Like the typical 90's OVA, it's just not too exciting and not very memorable. Sure it has some good characters, random non-detailed nudity, and a decent plot, but nothing gives it the edge it would need to be very exciting.

So while this isn't one to go out of your way to find, if you see it on a store shelf give it a rental. Jinnai, Fujisawa, the Bugrom, and the hot springs episode makes it worth at least that much of your time.

this is a decent anime, nothing great, nothing horrible, imho

the animation was good, though it might be thought as great by some, but i just found it too colorful for my personal tastes. But it is still pleasing from time to time.

The music is very lacking. I think especially that a series set in an imaginary world needs to have a distinguishable and memorable music. There was nothing of that sort unfortunatelly.

The story is a bit corny, imho, though told in an amusing way. What i really didn't like is the dramatic change from comedy to drama; that at the first 4 eps, the whole atmosphere of the series was comedic, means that it never takes itself seriously. Then it suddenly tries to become serieous, and even goes to the extent to make a serious ending. This HUGE difference in the atmosphere provided made an imbalanced feel to the whole thing, imho.

The characters were funny, but nothing deep of course. None of them standed out for me, to be honest,, but none has grated on my nerves either. a 7 will do.

I don't think i'll be into another Elhazard, unless i needed to relax. so i might forget about it quickly. But it was amusing for the time being, so this is what i call an "on the go" anime. If you want to relax, this will be a good watch, but if you're looking for an "experience" look somewhere else.

This anime, though a little old and therefore lacking in spectacular cgi, is quite good.

It almost NEVER takes itself too seriously, but neither does is scrimp on story either. This leaves the viewer the pleasant choice of watching it for laughs, or watching it for plot... and switching between the two whenever he likes!

The guy on the main page is right...get ready to cry at the last episode.

Verdict: A good ride that I would recommend to anyone.

I've always been a fan of this one. It was the first anime I ever saw subbed. It was this one that opened me up this ever growing industry in which I got involved. What really makes this one stick out is the romance/comedy undertones added to the ideal example of a sci-fi/fantasy. I'm a person who really appreciates a story involving alternate dimensions and time travel themes.
