First of all, I'd like to state that I am not exaggerating with the ratings I've provided this anime with. The main reason I am reviewing this is because it was a pretty amazing anime and am pissed at the fact that I did not watch it earlier due to the overall rating of the anime. It's really the type of anime I have been searching for although it's a bit depressing that it is only 3 episodes. It's highly recommended for those who like some love-romance/action with a great story plot.

I make a point of NOT reading any previous reviews for any anime I want to review. However, when I came to the page for Phantom, and noticed the low-ish score of 6.8, I had to look. Why? Because I FREAKING LOVED THIS ANIME. One bored night, I was searching for something to watch, and I came across this, put on a CD long ago. I put it in, and WOW. The intense atmosphere grabbed me right away. It starts out with a bang, and just keeps going right till the end. I'm one who is usually waiting for the end of an anime becuase I want to see what will happen. But with this one, I wanted it to go on for at least 12 episodes, because it was so good! I was on the edge of my seat almost the entire time. It was so stylish and intense, and the characters were so sympathetic - and this was just epsiode one. I watched the next one immidiately, and saved the third for the morning, since I wanted the Phantom experience to last for as long as possible.

And while the ending wasn't as flashy as I would have hoped, it was still a solid ending for what i think is one of the most underrated anime. Okay, I don't watch much action anime. But even so, I loved this! It put the heart beofre the action, and it worked out brilliantly. Both were VERY interesting, and I would recommend this as a gateway anime for sure.

Overally it's nicely drawn and entertaining, action filled drama. Only flaw would be the lenght, if this serie would have couple ( 2-3) eps. more lenght it would probably be a lot better.

Animation of the OVA is sharp and clear (pretty normal for a OVA made 2004). Nice drawing style and well made backgrounds etc.

Story is pretty average, but still deep and well made, for a serie stuffed in 3 eps. Still the story could have been on lot higher level, there are probably many series like this, so the story ain't that unique or original.

Character development is a part of the OVA. Friendship of Ein and Reiji, but this stays on the background, since you can't get lot about the characters in 3 eps. But still you can get a picture what kind of people these two are.

Sounds are OK, and seem to fit well to the serie, specially the opening is nice and catchy. Voice acting for on the serie is well chose. I don't see any problems with musics.

Since it's short i would probably watch it again, and if it were longer I would watch it again, for sure. All well made anime what falls to the shortnies of the serie, with couple another eps. this would have been a real good anime with good ratings.

After the first 2 episodes of this I was not only sure of its outcome but I seriously doubted that anything good could come of the last episode. Well, the outcome I predicted happened but somehow, exactly in the home-stretch this managed to pick-up the pace and be interesting...through the action at least.
About the only thing that has some shine to it in this short OVA is the animation. The character design was nice and detailed, the backgrounds were drawn quite alright and the color scheme was fitting for the atmosphere of the anime. The movement was decent as well so the animation gets the highest mark unfortunately.
The sound does not complement the animation and only manages to be average, mainly because of the voices which often fail to reflect the state of the character. The opening and ending were nice...nothing else is worthy to mention.
As I've stated in other reviews on short OVAs...3 episodes just aren't enough for story and character development and if such things are attempted, the end result is almost always shallow and a failure to what it wanted to be. I say "almost always" but frankly, I have yet to find an anime with less than 13 episodes that would manage this.
Phantom - THE ANIMATION takes a shot at developing its characters and its plot but, due to the lack of time...it fails miserably and in the end everything seems forced into the context...or rather, rushed would be a better term. There was potential for a good story and good characters despite their clichés if there would've been more time for the anime to do what it set out to do. But I guess you can't really ask for more from a basic OVA such as this.
The action was fairly boring in the first 2 episodes and it only managed to pick up in the last episode which is the best part of the whole thing.

Overall...it was a way to lose 90 minutes so I'm not really complaining. The action scenes in the last episode made it worth my time, especially since I wasn’t expecting anything grand.

This was a lot like Noir, but instead of the girl-girl team, you have a boy-girl team. It’s also much shorter, which was a good thing.

The characters was lacking in my opinion, I didn’t feel much for them which was the main reason I didn’t enjoy this as much as I would have.

Sound was average, didn’t really do much, but this might not be blamed on the sound alone.

Story was unrealistic, but I normally don’t mind that, as long as it’s good. Thing is, the makers tried to give a bit of character development in this, they did develop, so pretty quickly that it wasn’t done right. Hence for me, it wasn’t meaningful development.

Overall, it was best that this stayed as a 3 episode OVA, any more, and it would have been too boring. One for the gun action fans, but its extreme predictability made this one an unpleasant experience. Watch something else.

In short.

Cool, compact, entertaining and nice to look at.

It is a short 3 part OVA with no special intent. Total NOIR like bogus action (hhmm everybody gets hit in the forehead?), a small intersting but nothing special story, a good ending (not to happy :) ).

One negative pointat a few moments the motivation for some of the characters actions was totaly not logical.

Phantom is an entirely dismissive action OVA, though to its credit it's also gorier, more complete and decidedly a little better than most.

Unfortunately completion is pretty much all the plot has going for it. It's completely hackneyed; HOW many 'kidnap someone and make them a super-weapon' animes have we been exposed to by now? Unlike a lot of these series, however, Phantom doesn't even provide a reason for these actions. There is no overarcing political turmoil, very little in the way of a functional antagonist (he only emerges at the start of episode 3) and overall the plot is just completely pointless. The entire OVA is Ein and Zwei running around to random places and shooting people. It is trashed further yet by an awful ending and bizarrely pointless epilogue. The characters do cover a little more ground than the plot; however, when you only learn one character's name and she appears in the anime for two minutes there's something very wrong. The main character's name is never revealed, and his femme fatale counterpart is skipped over in the development department as well. Sure, you get a cryptic flashback hinting about her past, but that's all it bothers to spare you. Side characters are entirely for plot and action purposes only; the anime didn't need any more characters than its dynamic duo and the villain and it would have been fine.

The OVA looks okay in the animation department, and as much as it shames me to admit I pretty much downloaded this because I liked the coloring in the animenfo picture. The graphical quality takes a noticeable drop in the third episode, when the animation becomes minimized and the lines occasionally become blurry or pixellated. Sound is similarly dismissive, with an okay opening theme and nothing more.

Still torn as to whether or not Phantom warranted the 75 minutes I put into it. I could have watched something better, but easily could have watched something worse. I don't have many words given how generic this entire affair is, but you don't have a lot to lose if you give it a shot.

Phantom the Animation is a brief OVA which provides some background for another working. Reading a review prior to this, another guy stated it was a DVD game. I have not played the game so I have no idea how this is relative to the Phantom franchise. I am simply reviewing it as a solo work.

For an OVA, Phantom is not all that pretty. The style and design is bland and often uninspired. While the animation itself is not up to the usual standards of OVA quality, it is not horrible.

I wish I could make some note of the music in this 3 part OVA, but nothing stood out aside from the opening and closing credits. Coincidently those were just your run-of-the-mill Jpop singles. Nothing special.

Neither the story or the characters in Phantom were new to this genre of anime. Young adults/children who are assassins, brainwashing, and large servings of graphic violence. The characters and their conflicts shown here have all been seen before as well as having been done better.
While this OVA may prove entertaining to those who have played the game, it is nothing special to someone who hasn't. It comes off as just another cliche taken from the same overdrawn well.

Phantom the animation, is based on a DVD game called Phantom Of Inferno. The story follows the games storyline for the most part but throws in more information about the pasts of main characters Ein and Zwei. This is a decent action/asassin OVA. If you want to know more read on.

These review grades may seem very freaky on first view, but I can explain.

First and foremost, I'm almost 100% certain that the length listing of 3 OVAs is off. The anime is based on a famous ero-game, and the ground covered by the first two episodes is very small. The game has three "chapters", and right now we're around halfway through the first only. Therefore, I think the overall length will rather be in the 9-12 range. Especially since some OP shots are taken from the third and last chapter, and it's absolutely impossible to reach it in the third episode.

My story rating is based on the game. It's one of the most enthralling and touching storylines I ever had the pleasure of experiencing.

Unfortunately this doesn't translate to the first OAV. The whiny start was annoying in the game aswell, but things get better from there. Also unfortunately the anime direction is extremely bloody, and actually pointlessly unrealistic. The game still emphasizes some extra-honed skills of the Phantoms, but not this level of ridiculous slaughter. Hence my low enjoyment value. I hope - and think - that with the end of chapter 1, things will tone down to a more realistic level.

So - I wouldn't count this series out yet. Ep2 was already an improvement, and what follows from now on only gets better, with the ongoing character development.

I probably rated this a bit higher than I normally would because the only other reviewer totally slammed this anime and I feel it is decent enough fluff. (I have only seen the first episode though). It was cool that the girl was the one training the guy and she was actually better than him. I liked the action and fighting sequences, the characters haven't been really delved into and I really don't expect them to be that much as this is only a three part over, but I felt this anime had a promising beginning. If nothing else some cool looking action sequences make it worth watching once. I may change my review based on how the other two episodes are though.
