This is my first official review, though I've been using AnimeNFo for years. Okay, to "Iriya no Sora". For a 6 episode anime, this one does more than many others ever manage to accomplish. Definitely worth a watch. However, it's not so much a feel good anime as a "that's life" anime. Worth 6 hours of your time I'd say. Not much to talk about really, you kind of just have to experience it for yourself.

Animation was fluid and good. I really liked the character design, especially with the change in Iriya. There were many times when the images seem to take on these dark undertones, but it was probably on purpose in retrospect to comment on the dark nature of the series.

The OP song is really good, but it seemed a little too light-hearted for the show, at least to me. I don't really remember the music for the show, and often times that means it blended well with the moment. As for the END song, same thing, and I believe the same girl. However, the Japanese voice-acting was wonderful!

Okay, so I basically had 0 idea what was going on, but I still kept watching. I think that's kind of essential, because you began to concentrate on the characters rather than on the plot. It was well done in the space allotted, and for those of you who don't want to watch all of Saikano, give this a go. The anime basically comments on Pearl Harbor, war, and aliens all in one. The parallels are pretty astounding, and it does a good job. I'm not one for finding hidden messages, but this one made me think a bit.

The characters are good. It's 6 episodes, so you can only get so attached. The lead Asaba is genuinely concerned for Iriya, and it's refreshing more than mushy. Iriya is more complex, with so much psychological problems that she's like 3 people in one. And while you're half scared of her, you want to see more of her.

It was worth watching. I'm not sure I'd rewatch it, as it seemed to be a one-time enjoyment for me. But I feel better for having done so. You want a change of pace, pick it up. You can even watch an episode a day like I did.

This was a fun and short OVA about a girl who is destined to save the world as a secret pilot of a futuristic vehicle and a guy who was necessary for her to do what she needed.
Despite this series being on a Sci-Fi basis, you never see any fighting or any aliens/UFOs. It really is more about the relationships between the characters so AVOID if you're only looking for a sci-fi thriller.
The fact that this was an OVA really changes a lot of things about its viewing. The supporting characters are fun but shallow and sometimes the story is a little squished but that should not take you away from enjoying an interesting story.
Overall, it is a fairly enjoyable series with some humor and quite a few emotional moments.

This show was quite good, but it was depressing, so it takes a hit on enjoyment. The characters had a good bit of depth for the amount of time they had to be developed. The supporting cast was also both interesting and entertaining. The sotry was rather dense for the length (the opposite goes for the novels, from what I've heard) and they really manage to cram alot into the 3 hours they have to work with. Despite this fact, they did occasionally choose to include some things that were either irrelevent, or else the significance was lost on me. The beginning of episode 4 being one example of this. In fact Yuuko seems like a totally unnecissary chacter, since she only appears in a handful of sceans and never really does anything relevent. This might be an artifact of significantly shorting the source material, and I might just be overlooking the significance of her actions, but I don't see why she was written in (not that I dislike her or anything). Animation was usually good, but occassionally looks really messed up, sound was nothing special. The story was interesting and engaging, and athough I was really mad at Asaba in episode 5, overall he did much better than most romance anime male lead characters would have. I think that the significance of the yo character was lost on me. It appears on the corrispondent assignment board in episode 2, in the markings on the fuselage of the black manta, and in the short scene after the end credits in the final episode. Overall, however the anime was very well done, and because of the fast pace and short overall length it could easily be rewatched, which I may do to see if I can puzzle a bit more of it together. I'll just have to get over the rather depressing conclusion first.

This is one big budged anime which actually did not hit the mark that well. Even though this is rated sci-fi, it has more love story and little sci-fi in it.

I just marathoned this series and found it amazing. Yes, it does share some similarities with Saikano (one of my favorite animes), but it is unique in its own right. This is a depressing anime, I will not lie; however, in being depressing, its plot is that engaging, and that is what brought me closer to INS. It is a tremendous anime, better than I expected, especially after reading some of the reviews. In the first episodes, in my head, the name Chise kept on appearing whenever Kana was on screen, though this image goes away fast as the name Lucy starts showing up. anyways, seriously, watch this anime and you WILL enjoy it. Especially watch it if you like at least three of the animes I have listed below, stay away if you hate all of the ones I listed.

If you like depressing animes like this, here are some suggested series, though some are open-ended with regard to plot: Narutaru, Alien 9, Saikano, Now and then here and now, and Elfen Lied

Not dissimilar to Saikano, Voices of a Distant Star and a whole host of animes involving a girl who is one of the few in the World (if not the only one) who can pilot a World saving craft. She just happens to have a lover on Earth, which causes her much misery due to her situation.

It’s nothing new, but it was still interesting to watch due to the way it’s told and the way it uses inanimate objects to hint what’s going on. This obviously means that you have to work out a lot of things for yourself, and second viewing would be most encouraged if you were to understand all. Instead of leaving your audiences wondering, the last episode includes dialougues and scenes with non-stop narration on the facts and answers, even though, there were still some non-essential plots that are not explained directly.

The animation was wonderful, very much like Voices of a Distant Star, with great scenery, and simplified character design. There were great emphases on atmosphere through animation. This would have been helped greatly with more music I feel, maybe it was desired to create a feeling of emptiness without music, but I feel otherwise. There were some great dialogues that with some dramatic music could have really brought it out.

Overall, not too outstanding, there were some time-wasting moments. I feel as if I have seen it all before. Still, there’s always something fresh although the general plot is the same.

Iriya no Sora, UFO no Yatsu (InS) is an anime that bears much resemblance to Saikano in more ways than one. Set in a wartorn world with humans against some unseen "alien" enemy, InS focuses on the relationship between a school boy who's stuck in his own world not aware of the world around him and a young girl who's trying to regain her identity after fighting numerous battles. The weight of the world on the girl's shoulders but everything is from the point of the boy who feels like the weight of the world is on his.

Anyway, since it bears numerous resemblance to Saikano, many people will be turned off. Therefore --> I feel that those who hated Saikano should NOT even bother looking at this. Essentially, its the same thing but shorter, less blatantly depressive, and totally inconclusive.

However, I enjoyed Saikano and I thought that in some ways this was better. For example, Asaba Naoyuki, the main character, is not someone who you hate because of his cold-heartedness. Furthermore, this anime preserves humanity that Saikano lost during its story and it is a lot easier to sympathize with InS's story and the relationship that develops between Asaba and Iriya. They also plainly put into words what Saikano tried to convey in melodramatic heartwrenching break up scenes.

All of this anime is from the point of view of Asaba and remains in th small little world that he perceives. Although this OVA is short and doesn't really seem to have any meaning to it, the tense emotions that it managed to draw out from me made it worth watching.

In the end, this short six-episode is a love story with elements of drama that tries to evoke primordial human emotions. While I watched this, I was deeply drawn into the story. However, looking back it is similar to Saikano in that it cheap-shots emotions of desolation and emotion. Not so bad, deep or dark as Saikano does, but in very similar ways.

This is a paraphrased Saikano with better animation with a little more optomistic ending and a heavy reliance on telling everything that happens in a direct 'confession' rather than showing it. If this all still sounds interesting to you, watch Saikano. If you liked Saikano this is interesting but nothing memorable.

Errmm. I know it good, but this is not my kind of anime. It's just depressing for no reason. I guess I'm not really into 'saving human kind' crap. Iriya sadness doesn't enter my heart and Asaba was a shitty brat. I really can't exprlain why would they act or why they do such thing. Since it short ova, they never explain you with emotion. Only thing they have is good obvious story about fighting alien and some hidden character. It's cute to see Iriya with her timid expression. But she is all mess up.. the whole thing is mess up... what u want to do after watching this is to go and smash media or G.Bush. haha just kidding.

As expected from a non-hentai OVA, this series has very good animation. I would've given it a 10, if not the fact that anime movies obviously have better quality.

The voice actors didn't strike out that much, though the high school girl who has a crush on Asaba has an unique voice the likes of which I've never heard before. However, I give this a 9 mostly because of the music. The music in this series is absolutely fantastic. I may be a little biased, since I love string instruments and most of the songs rely heavily on the violin, but just to elaborate, one of the songs made me cry.

Story: this is where they fucked up. Fortunately, I watched the anime disjointly - I watched the first half months ago, then the second half months later, so I wasn't so particularly bothered (which is why my enjoyment rating is an 8). However, I know the story needs a lot of work. It's not that the plot is bad. It's that it was poorly executed overall, or that it had to be squeezed into 6 episodes. The setting shows so much promise and plot so much potential that it's almost frustrating. There are glimpses of brilliance though, and the dialog is pretty good overall. This anime would've benefited a lot if it was expanded to 12+ episodes.

Iriya is a fairly interesting character, though still not that unique. I like how they pictured her dying hair. Enomoto is the guy who knows the stakes yet realizes the sins he's committing in the process. The rest of the characters are typical.

Overall, a pretty good anime.

After viewing plenty of anime features, one learns to develop a certain acumen for interpreting the often-disjointed and confusing plot lines that much of the media features. If something doesn’t always make much sense, then it’s up to the viewer to bridge the gap, be that by forming their own plot theories or reading the accompanying manga/playing the accompanying H-game. Ultimately, few series are ever TRULY incomplete, and I can say with utter confidence that Iriya no Sora, UFO no Natsu is one of them. Quite simply one of the most fragmented and convoluted things I have ever had the displeasure of watching, this dreck is an uninspired and ultimately useless Saikano knock-off.

Ook, now this is a weird one.. this anime had the potential to be amazing, but its still very good! Despite the fact its an OVA, there's a benefit of doubt factor that should be given, but its still very good...

Firstly, this is a romance/sci fi anime, with a similar vein towards Saikano, in which a girl is a 'weapon' of sorts and she gets into a romantic situation with the male protagonist. Yes, there are similarities to Saikano with this, in fact, you could easily say that this anime is a cuter and much more 'friendlier' version of Saikano... a bad or a good thing, well, honestly, both try to portray different messages, where Saikano went for anti-war message style, this anime concentrated more on the high-school romance stuff more. (thats not saying Saikano didn't do its romance well at all, its very good)

However, UFO is a real good anime in sheer enjoyment and value, highly enjoyable scenes caught my eye and its really what this anime is about, entertaining the viewer. UFO does it well, many bits were humourous, bits were cute and its really quite a charming piece of work.

Unfortunately, this anime also falls under the Saikano spell, where the backstory is quite bad... where hardly much was explained and the ending didn't give it justice as well. In fact, if this anime was given a small 13-episode tv series, im sure this would have been better with better storytelling and character development.

Of course, taking into account this is an OVA, things have been shaved off and its also very likely things were rushed and unneeded... however, i really enjoyed this OVA, not as emotional as Saikano but definetely a lot cuter and friendlier.

Overall: 7.5/10
Grade: B

At first I didn't know how to review this anime... this is just one of the weirdest anime I've watched (and yes I'm an otaku).

I say "weird" in the sense that, for me at least, many of the actions of the characters just seem inappropriate for the situation... the major ones are in episode 5 (though explained in episode 6 I don't think the explanation is enough at all), but throughout all the episodes there are some scenes where I just don't understand the actions of the characters (mostly the lead guy), and wondered to myself "WTF is the guy thinking???" There are also other little common-place dialogues that just felt unnatural to me.

This is why I gave such low points for character. The enjoyment also went down a lot because of it. The story is very similar to Saikano, but imo not done as well. Sure Saikano had plotholes, but it held you for the duration of the series. Iriya didn't really... I kept stopping to rant on IRC about my frustration with the plot.

The sound is so-so. The op is far from being good... I'd say *almost* normal at most, and I say it as a musician. The ed I didn't bother to listen to again after the first episode. Actually, I don't think I listened to the complete op after the second episode either. The bg music isn't really noticable... just plain I guess.

Surely there are better anime. Even compared to Saikano, I'll take Saikano. On the other hand, if you are like me and have exhausted almost all romance anime (hehe, I'm a hopeless romance anime junkie), this *might* be worth your time... dunno. Depends on how cheap your time is I guess.

Iriya no Sora, UFO no Natsu reminded me a good bit of Saikano with enough details. Both feature a teenage girl used in a war against their will with a guy maintaining whatever sense of human morality they've got. However, Iriya no Sora puts more emphasis on Naoyuki and Kana's developing relationship than balancing the relationship with the tragedies of war as Saikano did.

Animation is standard quality for an OAV, though seeing the CG-designs of Kana's fighter ship had me dropping my mouth in delight. The music in Iriya no Sora was blissful for the intro and done well for the dramatic scenes of Kana.

Though Iriya no Sora has similarities with Saikano, the series covers up every bit of detail in its plot towards the end unlike Saikano and its plot holes. The only reason I didn't give Plot a 10 because some of the plot developments were a bit predictable a la Saikano. Character development was done very well for Kana and Naoyuki as Kana becomes more open with Naoyuki as her relationship with Naoyuki develops.

But, all of this just reminds me of a light version of Saikano. While not totally original, Iriya no Sora gives more emphasis on the character relationships than mixing it too much it with war's tragedy making it a good romantic drama anime to check out.

I like to think of this as the Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket of Macross.

Let me explain, Gundam is like 80% action, 20% socializing whereas the Macross world is more 50/ 50. Sorta' like Star Wars vs. Star Trek. Now war in the Pocket is Gundam in architecture but it really feals more Macross like IMO. This, while it has nothing to do with robots, has some nice jets (well one...) and if the minds behind Macross wanted to pull off a little War in the Pocket-type series, this would be it.

Only hopefully they'd provide a little better ending.

To put it in one single word: frustrating. By the time I first read about it, I was extremely excited, I liked the artbook pictures I saw, etc, etc. The first episode was just OK, some parts were great, others barely OK. From the second episode onwards, is all downhill. A pretty steep one, to say.

Animation is very good. Colors are bright, scenario is beautiful. Character desing is OK, not my favorite. Sound is average. The intro song is not very good. Story and character, on the other hand, is a total failure. I longed to see the Black Manta in action, it had great design and it was animated with top notch computer graphics. For me, it was a surprise that the Earth, being invaded by aliens or whatsoever, would NOT be protected by a giant robot. I got little tidbits of it here and there, and just flying alone. Its is not that I'm a fan of just action genre, but the rest of the story let me down for taking away my action.

As a drama or love story, it is as frustrating as an action one. The director goes relentlessly away from the plot, there are ridiculous side stories and futile characters, and fillers, FILLERS, on a 6 episode series. Oh, and the ending is bad too. Simply not believable and with major holes in the plot.

Value and enjoyment went straight down as I watched the series. Actually, the same happened with Tsubasa Chronicles. Being a fan of Card Captor Sakura, I couldn't help untill I watched it, but I was so disappointed that I don't even want to write about it. If you liked VERY MUCH the first episode, you might want to watch it. Otherwise, there are much better stuff to look for.

UFO Summer, bluntly put, is a gentler version of Saikano. Because of this, it might excel better romantically, but really comes up short on everything else. If you're looking for a classic japanese style love story with the usual 'awkwardly too polite to admit their love' moments, this is a winner.

If you're looking for drama, you'll probably be disappointed. All the important and interesting dramatic events happen off-camera, and the pay-off for watching the series is mailed to you at the end of the last episode! FOR SHAME.

It certainly doesn't deserve the extra-ordinary high rating the series is getting here, but it isn't awful either.

Mahoromatic and Saikano where the first 2 things that came up in me when i finished this OVA and i can tell you...it`s no good when i compare an anime with Mahormatic because this was one of the most traumatic experience in my life. ^^

Well...only the part of an organisation who fight aliens with some "Super weapon" in the form of a cute girl, the typical polite 18 year old guy who is drooling all over her and the frustrating countdown to "the end" were somewhat similair with Mahormatic.

Iriya had also a few things from Chise (Saikano), first she is also some kind of ultimate weapon who has to save the world and second, she also needs lots of pills and shots to survive.

And Asaba and Shuji (also Saikano)...well...they are both asses who like to break the heart of a perfect girl who needs them... ^^

All in all i have to say that this was a great OVA.
The story was quite clear and told well in just 6 episodes.

Was the story unique? No! Worth to watch? Absolutly!

The Animation: Good, not the best i have ever seen but its okay.

Sound: Nice, the intro and the ending are great...very good...
Also the voice actors have done a great job.

Story: Not very Unique, but nevertheless very enjoyable...and well told in just 6 episodes.

Characters: O no...that standard polite 18 years old guy again! ^^
But don`t fear! Iriya saves this point because she is far from boring and has a complicated personality that keeps interesting you : )

So..if you like the romantic/drama genre you have to see this one...if you don`t like this genre...do crazy and just watch it...what is 3 hours of your life?! ^^
It`s nice...i garanty you! ;)
