I just blew through all the 26 episodes in 2 days and I couldn't stop watching. This is an excellent anime and one of my personal favorites.

Each story begins with a single step, Beck begins with a single music note. Follow the journey of Tanaka as he rises from a nobody in high school to a Japanese rock God. The path to stardom isn't easy, but in the end hoping for an encore/sequel may be what people will want the most.

Wow I am just simply amazed by BECK. The music was just awesome. Well that is if you love rock. In my opinion i thought this anime was to reach out to people with music. It did a really good job with that. BECK is all about Koyuki's progression about music.

This isn't about some kid who just decides to play the guitar and becomes famous all of a sudden. This is about a boy named Koyuki who was influenced by Ryusuke. He had nothing special or wasn't interested in anything until he met his dog called Beck. This is where Koyuki starts to learn to love music and play music. He starts practicing a guitar given by Ryusuke. Here this is where mostly conflicts and endurance comes. No it isn't about the guitar. It's about the hardship he has to go through in life. In playing guitar swimming and singing. He has a teacher who teaches him a little guitar and more on swimming. He helps him progress though the ideal world.

Ryusuke makes a band called BECK. He had a hard time finding members but was eventually able to. After hearing Koyuki's playing of the guitar he wanted him to be part of the band. Koyuki only played the guitar at most 1 year. Then this is where BECK faces many hardship on the way. Yes the music industry is not so nice. What made BECK better is that these problems seemed like Real life. It actually happens. Business is sure rough out there.

The song in the anime are quite inspiring and not to mention well made too. Of course it's repetitive. It can't be helped though since they need those songs to play in gigs. What made this get me really hooked on to the anime was the Opening. Yes I was made to hit in America. Good song leading you where the whole idea is going. They play all of their songs in the last 4 episodes. Probably the most inspiring event.

I will say the characters are really well developed. Well especially the main characters. The garbage ones look really bad. They don't even fit in the background. But hey the English used in here makes up for that. Yeah they use a lot of English I was quite surprised. It's even pretty funny on how they pronounce the words.

Anyways I REALLY ENJOYED it.

BECK is one of the best anime about music. What is interesting is that almost everything seems plausible. It’s something I like about these kinds of anime, you must believe that the story could happen in real life. Of course, the music market has changed more in the last 3 years than in the last 30. It is more and more impossible to see profitable bands and profitable music. We are about to see a drastic change in the way that we buy music and by the way it is distributed. A single cd-r cost around 0.01$ to produce so cds are going to be more and more sold online via internet only. The big distribution store have all switched their marketing techniques selling more and more global medias like movies and DVD instead of cd. All this to say that BECK is exploiting this kind of success story that charms you, but can hardly been believed in 2008. At least, the story keeps it to a certain level plausible. It’s not the big tour bus that you see in the opening, in reality it’s a simple cheap van drove by the band. In that perspective, the intro can be misinterpreted.

As a musician and a music lover, BECK simply drove me crazy to pursuit my dream of playing music in live concerts in small bars. If you play music, BECK is going to give you the wish to play music. It’s one of the shows I really like because it did the same as NANA for me, waking up my emotions as a musician.

BECK is also a good show that focus more about friendships than actual relationships. I believe it’s a good thing because you get to know the characters better and not the love story between them. At some time, you even wish for something more, but that’s for the best I guess. Also, there seems to be a little too much glamour in all the show. At first, it begins with the success of the band and it finish with Japan idols mixing with Japan bands. It’s probably the part that I hate the most mainly because Maho, the sister of Ryusuke, becomes an idol. It gave me a sense of reality about what society can make of the young girls. Seeing Maho in bikini made me realize how much perverted we have become. Probably the worst of all, these girls seem to forget what it really means to be seen as a simple object of desire. Especially in the case of Maho who can hardly show her real self. Koyuki will realize that strong peoples on the outside are actually really weak in the inside.

As much as BECK show us straight goal success, it also show us the reality of most music bands doomed to work part time to be able to do what they want. It’s more and more the case now and this is the reason why I began the review explaining this. Chiba needs to work in a restaurant, Koyuki also and Ryuusuke work at a fishing pond. If you take that Maho got some success in the idol industry, you understand that an illiterate girl with a good physical showing herself in a bikini can easily earn more than 5 guys working their butt at a low salary. I think that you can understand the picture easily, the music industry is not able to feed the musicians anymore. It’s way easier to earn money by getting naked with the actual medias than by playing music.

I will finish this little reflection about BECK with this in mind, the SHOWBUSINESS has become the BUSINESSSHOW. No matter how much you are talented as long as you can sell your name.

NOTE: i watched the English Dub and it was amazing. best fricking dub i've ever heard. all the voices were so well done and professional.. and the singing was amazing.

i blew thru this one in two days and i have to say it is definitely one of the best anime i've seen. this is partially because i love rock music and was also an aspiring rock star like so many.

the story and the characters are what will make an anime special. BECK has memorable and realistic characters. the plot and story are also realistic. everything that happens seems plausible in reality, and that makes the story all the more touching.
the personal interactions are all so well done and you really feel what's happening.

the music as i've said is great for the most part.

what can i say except this anime was beautiful. near the end i felt like crying at times because it was just so real. it highlights wonderfully what trials and hurdles bands and people face as they go thru life. you feel for the characters and you fall into their world for a brief moment.

watch it. it's great.

note: i gave this all tens simply because it needs to be higher on the list than it is now. if i could fault it anywhere it would be animation, although the show looks pretty good overall

Well, I finally took the time to marathon BECK all in one go. This anime has went pretty far... Firstly, most musical influences spoken of are mostly rock 'n' roll legends, American (in before Japan haets America), British, and mostly the English-speaking world. Second, it broke out of Japan and landed some airtime on primetime television here in Canada. Without a doubt, the fanbase for this anime will keep growing and growing, perhaps earning a spot amongst anime greats that have penetrated the mainstream barrier. Of course, the band BECK/Mongolian Chop Squad is entirely fictional, so you won't actually see them on the musical charts; in addition, Dying Breed is also fictional amongst a few other "famous"-said bands featured in it's 26-episode run.

An unknown band's rise to fame; in the end, the results are the same, but what makes BECK unique from the hundreds of other stories-told-differently? I can't really say that BECK is so special, but it does have a driving force behind it, whether it's from the band members, the romance back-story, or the dog and parrot. No template is entertaining without a special spark, and BECK just has that spark. Said story is above average when compared others of the same type - it's just how much enjoyment you can take out of it.

I'm also getting hints that this anime was MADE for American viewing like Cowboy Bebop and FLCL were to be - it's so chock full of western influences that it CANNOT be refused airspace on western television. The nature of the anime is also similar to it's other mainstream breakers - it's as slow and steady as them along with being hooking and gratifying. I'm sure this anime will hit home to it's target audience along with many band-to-be's and band-to-be-not's.

BECK will be a pantheon amongst mainstream greats, which is why I give a full 10/10 to Value. Enjoy awesome rock music or enjoy your "escape" popular pop.

Beck was a fantastic, friggin sweet, and all of the above. Definitely one of the most innovative animes around.

People who haven't seen the anime should definitely see it in Japanese w/ the subtitles you want first. The english version is a battered version of the first one. In the japanese version you'll hear people speak english.

This anime has everything, it's that extravagant. Everything about this anime is extremely realistic. They triumph over mind boggling odds with pure determination.

------
This story is about a band named Beck that made it big. Before any of that happened though, the band had many obstacles to overcome. Some people in the anime have to struggle just to SURVIVE.

The romantic side of this anime was how the main character, Koyuki, had feelings for two people. His first love was a girl named Izumi but then realized Maho was the person he truly loved. It takes time for him to decide, but he eventually chooses who he wants to be with.

------
The main character of this anime is called Koyuki. He caught the attention of a guitarist named Minami Ryusuke with his singing. He is what I consider a quick learner. He steadily improves his guitar playing with the help of an instructor named Sato Ken'ichi. Koyuki possesses many good attributes. Puting aside that fact that he is a shy kid and somewhat of a pushover, he is tremendously determined.

His band mates are Chiba (singer), Ryusuke (lead guitarist), Saku (drummer), and Taira (Bassist).

The are all very talented in their own ways. They are all also very different. For example, Chiba is a funny and energetic free spirit while Koyuki is shy and reserved. Koyuki is the person who has to catch up to their level. In the end, after all the chaos, they all start to get along.

------
hah. Sound... Music... are all terrific. The sound is the best part of this anime since it IS primarily about music. You definitely get to see this band improving by seeing how they play in the beginning to how they play in the end. Beck is an extremely energetic band thanks to Chiba.

There's a certain flow in the music that they play that you'll like. WITNESS THE EVOLUTION OF BECK... from an amateur underground band to a sensational legend.

------
Overall, Beck is a Grade A anime. It has everything an anime lover would look for. A good story, good music, good characters, and good animation. What more can a person want?

This show is good. It has good sound quality, by the end the music is good for anime. the plot is engaging and fulfills our 'slice of life' needs. It never ends an episode without making you want more (the last episode has the best closure throughout the whole show). It has a high probability of leaving one with confidence, and the feeling that it was a good show.

it attempts (whether it succeeds or not is ones opinion) to get across someones idea of the power, importance, or meaning of music.

An incredible 26 episode ride. Beck has a dramatic story line, deep characters with complex relationships, peppered with light comedy and even a little action. And, oh, the music. "I was made to hit in America," baby. An inspiring coming of age classic about hardships, perseverence, pursuing dreams, and friendships. A must watch.

DANG! Man loved this anime. Totally new genre for me. I really learned a lot from this anime and the songs are great. I love the animation; very new, good quality. The sound is also great wich really matters since it's all about a rockband, I mean, you can't have bad sound when there's music played right. Th story really displayes the characters and their feelings (for music)well. It never bores, Nice beginning and ending. I really enjoid this anime and i realy recommend it.

-Som-

When I first heard about BECK, I thought it would be awesome to watch more inspiring anime series. Not only that....I love drama and music, so I thought this would totally appeal to me. When I started watching, I basically kept telling myself that it will get better. It stayed the same for pretty much the whole thing: boring. It didn't draw me in, and it definitely lacked many aspects.

What do you get when you cross the rock culture of the US with Japan? You got it, Beck!

I am not just some 12 year old who thinks rock is cool, so im going to give an honest review. The portrayal of the "american" rock scene is terrible. It just doesnt go by how the anime shows it does. And what was with all of the cursing in the beginning?

I feel like this anime was made by some Japanese guy who heard vaguely of the american rock scene and decided to try and make an anime about it.

The music is subpar and the english is horrible. If its going to be a Japanese anime, keep it in Japanese. I dont want to hear characters talking all american rockstar with broken english japanaccents. These points killed the anime.

The main character kept getting dealt bad luck. Probably the worst out of any other anime. And he was kind of a loser too. I liked him as a character, but damn, what a depressing story of his life.

With that, I think this anime is very overrated, and to believe this anime is an accurate representation of what it stand for, your wrong.

Beck's a pretty good anime about a kid who becomes a member of a j-rock band.

Inspiration isn't as powerful as some other anime like Hikaru no Go and Hajime no Ippo, but the 26 episode length of the anime is severely at fault for this.

On this note, the anime ends in a very rushed manner, which was sort of disappointing, but not so bad that I have a bad impression now that I'm done.

Why bring up inspiration at all? Because that is a major theme of Beck. Following your dreams and perservering despite obstacles.

It's not all that trite, it's pretty well done, and overall entertaining and with enough heartfelt moments to earn my suggesting it for viewing.

Finally, if anyone who can edit the description page for AnimenNFO reads this, it's "Dying Breed" not "Dying Bride".

It still puzzles me how beck managed to get me hooked, lined, and sunken (especially considering how I initially thought it was crap after the first couple of episodes), but it did. And for the life of me, I just can't really see how what seems to be such a run of the mill underdog story can be so good, but it just IS.

It's not hard to dismiss Beck in the opening few episodes. The animation style is quirky, inconsistant, and with the main character Koyuki friend's face looking like a horrible child's doodle and the dog looking like a weird stuffed animal, it gave off a distinct impression of amateurness. Content wise.... nope, nothing looks special here either. Here's the main character. From his looks, I can already tell he's one of those boring loser of a main character. And is he? Yep, he fits the bill alright. And yea, he fancies a girl. No doubt she'll be chasing after him too, despite the less loserish, more likely candidates for her affection.

The first episode failed to impress, but I continued to watch as I couldn't sleep and had nothing better to do (away from home at the time). And so this pattern continued. I don't know exactly how it happened (the anime didn't really make any drastic changes, like, say, KGNE), or when, but by the 2nd or 3rd night of viewing, I was addicted. The number of episodes I watched per night suddenly skyrocketted, and the main cause of sleeping late became wanting to watch more beck rather than insomnia.

So, how does it do it? Not really sure. I guess the closest way I can think of for describing this phenomenon is that, when it eventually got off the ground, it just started to spin a darn good yarn. Even though main character has a bit of a loser syndrome, he is nevertheless a very appealing character, and his moments of courage does make you sooo want to egg him on. The climax of the anime when the band was playing a gig, was a memorable one, and despite the music not really being to my taste, and despite Koyuki's voice sounding less amazing than what the anime make it out to be, I was bobbing my head to the music, totally caught up in the amazing atmosphere. In addition, I somehow felt proud of Koyuki... as though he was a friend of mine. Perhaps that's secret of the anime - the down to earth characters that you can connect with.

Whatever it is, this far from flawless anime is an immensely enjoyable experience, and even if you don't like it at first, stick with it... you will be rewarded!

beck is a pretty good anime that excels on some fronts. its story and characters are well grounded, and appealing. people who love bands and rock should definetely get involved with 'beck'. only one problem however: i read the manga.

i think i speak for all beck fans when i say that the anime doesn't match up to the manga AT ALL.

i know sometimes ppl will say "the manga makes the anime look worse, blah blah blah", but believe me when i say that Beck is the ULTIMATE case for this: in that the manga is awesome purely. the anime.. ehhhh not so much

the good parts of this anime lies totally on the fact that it leeches from the manga. its awesome story: koyuki, average nobody kid joins a band with guitar genius ryuusuke. it just gets crazy from there; all characters from saku to maho, and everyone; works brilliantly.

but the anime did nothing but make the manga worse. giving koyuki a shaming voice was already bad enough, but they had to add horrid english voice actors. not only that but the animation wasn't that impressive (i didnt' really like it) and most of the songs were not very original. and maho singing the 'full moon sways' song. OMG, was that ruined as well. just listen to it, you'll know what i mean.

in short most of my enjoyment was derived SOLELY from the fact that i read the manga, and was 'reliving' some nice memories. however, the bottom line is this: read the (amazing) manga, don't even bother with the anime.

BECK is so flawed in many ways. Somehow, its still very entertaining and it got me hooked. It looks and sounds like a really bad anime at first but somehow BECK makes all the shoddy material good. The romance, characters, music, the engrish everybody has been complaining about, and it's dull style is somehow appealing.

BECK is an anime which will appeal to alot of youths, especially those who have aspirations to be a musician or singer. I like the very subtle approach and pace for this anime(Read my story review). It didn't go over the board as compared to other similar themed anime, like Full Moon wo Sagashite and Gravitation, where instant fandom and exaggerated hardships abound. Instead, it gave a more realistic feeling towards their creation and their rise to popularity. Of course, one cannot expect to totally believe that such circumstances and situations are real. I feel that the creators had done a good job with trying to make a music anime without the cheesiness that comes with it usually seen in other similar anime. Overall, BECK really shined in its genre.
BECK is a must see for all who loves music, esp rock. It may not be exciting or anything, but it will definitely leave you with a smile and hope at the end.

BECK is an anime about a boy named Tanaka Yukio, his life at the time is normal to that of any other boys but eventually begins to become envolved in music alot more.

This is an excellent anime over all, I enjoyed it very much so for all the 26 episodes I watched (which I watched in less then a day) Even if you don't like music that much you will probably enjoy this anime.

I recently had the unfortunate experience to watch BECK, and I figured that I had better review it in the hope of warning others to stay away.

BECK has two main parts to its plot. It is about a band struggling to find its niche and gain popularity and fame, and it is about one of the boys in the band who progresses through the series by becoming more self confident and able to deal with the world around him. That description may make BECK sound like a decent anime, and by some accounts it is. However, all the little things detract so much from the series that they keep it from being worth watching.

The first problem that I had with BECK is the unwarranted cruelty that many of the characters exhibit. I think the intention was to make BECK seem realistic and believable, but it is too much. In one episode, the main character has been working for months to be able to buy a new guitar. As he is walking home, someone accosts him and shatters his guitar just because he doesn't like him. This annoyed me because I didn't think it served any purpose, and I don't think people are that mean in real life anyway. This happened frequently with purposeless beatings and other random acts of cruelty that I found to be unsavory additions to the show. A second thing is the prevalent use of engrish. There are a lot of supposed Americans in this anime, and with the exception of only one or two, they all sound like Japanese people speaking English with heavy accents. While this doesn't detract from the plot, it is annoying to hear something so obviously wrong. Also, the script wasn't always that great. This is an actual quote from episode 19 during the documentary scene:

"On stage they are perfect.
They're flawless.
Yes they are.
And maybe not..."

It just sounds dumb to me.

A third problem is that the F-word appears in English extremely frequently through out the series. It appears that another aspect of the creators trying to make BECK seem realistic is that they thought all Americans use the F-word in every sentence. Swearing doesn't usually bother me, but hearing it over and over again in every sentence did, especially because instead of being realistic, the creators went over the top. A final problem that I have is that except for the last 4 or 5 episodes, this show is amazingly boring. In each episode the band performs a live, the main character makes a little progress with a girl, some other girl gets mad at him and someone gets beat up for no reason. There was very little humor in the show, and very little of anything else to keep me entertained. The show attempted to be dramatic and entertaining but I found it boring and depressing. Over all, this show attempted to be great, but tried too hard and ended up failing.

On a different note, I actually found the ending to be decent even though other reviewers have complained about it. Once I hit episode 21 or 22, I was actually entertained enough to keep watching until the end. I really felt the excitement as the band began to achieve its goal and the spectators were moved by the music. However until that episode I had to force myself to watch BECK and always dreaded putting in the next episode. In my opinion, it is not worth having to watch the first 20 episodes of BECK just to be able to see the ending. I would not recommend watching this anime.
