FA is a strange anime. Its action packed opening is totally different from the episodes to follow. The story is basically about the love between this one guy and the twins. Though I find the premise of a guy having two girls who have no problem 'sharing' him - unsettling and unconvincing - the characters have drawn me into the story. Yes, FA is a love story, but more to that, it's a story about growing up and realising your mistakes and stepping forward. At times, I could identify with Rentarou about running away from himself. As for the twin girls, their characters are vivid and attractive. One quiet and understanding, the other loud and decisive. She is the driving force of the trio. The other two lag behind, but they catch up because of her.

The way the story is told is different from usual. It's fragmentary. Scenes traverse between the past and the present, but instead of confusing the audience, it works by adding that element of poignancy - of Rentarou always looking at the past, and how the past is always tying him down. The fragmentary storytelling provides a reflective mood and adds a personal touch to the characters.

Sound is fitting, and at various scenes - especially evocative. Lovely music.

I wish the story is more complex, as the way it is told is quiet unusual and unique. Still, FA is entertaining and at times, thought provoking.

A well-rounded anime, I suppose.

Definitely worth watching.

The first episode was, bluntly, a mess. I had to immediately question the impression I'd gotten from the serie's description and the future didn't look too bright. After that the actual story started, though. The telling is fragmentary, which works pretty well in this case. The story is bittersweet, making you sad and laughing at the same time. Although from the first episode I got the impression that the protagonist was a traditional wuss, he actually turned out to be a very round and deep character with feelings as complex as his background, which you are given piece by piece, and I found him very sympathetic after a while. Everything from events to emotions eventually comes together with both surprising complexity and simplicity - I think the writers did a very good job as far as the character's thoughts and emotions were concerned. After the most touching episodes, the end of the series takes a somewhat unexpected turn towards high-strung fantasy which (although in this case is to be taken literally) vividly reminded me of the main character's escape to a dream world at the end Brazil (one of my favourite movies).

It seems like the series has a vide variety of different elements and characters knit together in a surprisingly undisturbing manner (although I wouldn't have minded leaving some out entirely...), as though the setting was an alternative universe or otherwise slightly distorted reality.

Well, well. Here's the alternative to Futakoi. It has a MUCH DIFFERENT feel to it. I'm talkin about a Suzumiya Haruhi crossed with Furi Kuri kind of feel to it. While the original Futakoi was pure harem and school-life, this gem of an anime combines action with romance and comedy for a memorable 13 episode series of style.

And style is the keyword. This anime has what the original didn't: Style, and loads of it. Random, yet orchestrated, occurrences, convoluted dialogue, and the general "What the hell is going on? I don't understand this but I love it" feeling that you get the first time you watch Furi Kuri. Although the established premises at episode one are a bit suspicious (I mean, why do two girls walk up to some random guy looking for jobs?), the development has depth and density to it.

The animation and sound were decent - nothing spectacular - but the offbeat storyline and the unpredictability of the events are makes this anime something unique. Not to mention that Sara and Soju are insanely cute.

Carrots!

This is slightly better than Futakoi S1. The anime tries to be everything, but its really a pointless anime at best. Its not really good, its not a harem anime, and it tries to hard to be an all rounder anime.

Lets start from the beginning. I chose this show because it seemed cool and was it ever.

The first episode will literally blow you away with a sequence of action packed mind twisting start.
It slows down in the middle getting to the more romantic part of the story.
But don't worry the end picks up well. Especiall ep. 11 and 12. Amazing

So the Animation was really good which was unique and normal at the same time

The sound was cool with beatuiful melodies and lyrics along with the character voices.

The story was good. A little hard to understand but still great. It has many wacky sequence along with the romantic touch so you will fells all kinds of feeling from laughing to crying.

The characters were the best part. After watching this series i just love twins. The main characters sara and shojyo are just great and Rentaro is jsut as amusing. You will really like the characters.

The Value is a nine. Thats how good this series was. You may want to watch it another time. For me it is a series i will remember.

Enjoyment: 10
As i said before, you will feel all kinds of feelings. I would recommend watching it just for eps: 1, 11, 12, 13. Which were just amazing !!!!!!!!!!

there is one word for this anime: weird. it breaks many conventions that i was expecting. also, "harem" isn't really appropriate for this one.
i can't believe it. two girls like the same guy... but SOMEHOW, they pulled it off.
this is essentially a story about Rentarou. his father, his past, his doubts, and his indecisive personality. throughout the anime he changes, and realizes that he needs to grow. for the sake of the girls, and for himself. i love how throughout the anime his father was kind of this 'unreachable' role model; but in the end, he turns from a boy into a man.
the music is awesome too; excluding the weird opening (its not THAT bad acutally, but it ruins the mood), everything else is amazing. the ending theme is downright crazy, as well as all the other in anime songs.
this anime has the craziest, weirdest analogies/characters. throughout the story there are other twins, crazy squid monsters, and yakuza. the first episode is,however, misleading, b/c its not rly like the rest of the anime. but still, i was left impressed with how EVERYTHING tied together to rentarou's development as a person. and the ending...talk about happy happy happy
the anime impresses and leaves a warm feeling. 'realistic' is not the best word for this series, because there are..well.. squid monsters and other weird/funny stuff. but, then again, everything, i think, is an analogy to love and its battles. therefore, if the story wasn't taken literally, we actually have a masterpiece romance plot

EDIT: as i've read some newer reviews and some older ones, i've realized there IS a way this anime will not work for you. only watch it if you're open to emotions. for example my kid brother, who yet had no understood the complexity of depression nor would appreciate what it feels like to lose someone you love, could not understand the array of emotions that rentarou, soujyuu and sara had to face. THEREFORE, only watch if you can appreciate nit/grit emotions like in the anime suzuka. if not, you'd best stick with your action animes, otherwise you will be bored as much of this anime is ROMANCE

Futakoi Alternative is a great story about growing up and falling in love. It's only a harem in the strictest sense because there are two people in love with Rentarou, but it didn't really develop and although you get the sense they love eachother it seems almost more paternal to me-or at the very least there's never any of the jealoust typical of harems. Some episodes may seem like fillers but they're all alluded to later on and a lot of the events are symbolic to the times the characters considered to be happy. The characters alone have made this one of my favorite series.

The animation in this series is great. There are no recycled or reused scenes, I can't even recall a single loop in it and the character designs, particularly Sara and Soujyo, are all good. The character design is varied quite a bit and some appear to be caricatures, but those all fit their personalities really well. I really liked the way that previews for the next episodes are done, it's like a black and white projector - it seems simple but it's creative and I liked it.

The OP for this show is really weird and really, really bad. It starts off soft with angels in the sky holding hands and then ends up with helicopters, guns, explosions, and lots of twins. It's horrible, but that aside, the series had some great music. The music really adds to the emotions of certain scenes or adds tension to others, but it always fits. It does a great job fitting the scenes. There are two EDs for the series and both are great and really tie into the show well. The voice acting is great.

The story is where this show loses some points to me. It could have been better executed. The antagonist in the series is a squid-Nazi cult, which although it could be humorous at times, and I know the show is supposed to be a comedy, I had a hard time suspending my disbeleif. I just didn't care for the squid cult. Rentarou is a detective who's growing up in his father's shadow and his father had defeated a squid that was destroying their town a few years ago, so I guess that's where part of it stems from and facing the squids himself is part of his coming of age, I suppose. I think it'd have been better if it were some sort of mafia, but I don't really care. Sara and Soujya have a secret that is intertwined with this stupid cult, too.

Characters are this shows strong suit. I've never watched a show and cared more about what happened to the characters than in this one, particularly Sara and Soujyo. They're strong characters but at the same time they're pretty fragile emotionally. They're playful, innocent, easy to anger, slow to forgive and forget and funny. Rentarou is their clusmy guardian who is a blockhead and clueless about their feelings until the end when he's finally grown up. I loved all the main characters.

Since the show was free, I have to give the value a 10. I initially gave enjoyment a 9 because of my dislike of the squid cult but after watching a few other series in the romance genre I realized they all fell short of the high expectations this show had set up.

Futakoi Alternative is an interesting anime. It has a very nonlinear timeline accompanying its story, and a few very action-packed scenes. I was somewhat dissapointed at some of the episodes, though, which seemed like a lot of random nothingness. Compared to Futakoi, though, the Alternative is far superior in terms of quality IMHO.

Prior to this, I haven't watched its predecessor, Futakoi, so there'd be no comparison there. The opening action packed scene gave me the first impression that the series would be an action series, given the explosive scenes. However, as the focus later switches to Rentarou and the twins, it turned out quite differently.

The entire series is basically a beautiful story of life: growing up, facing the realities and hardships of life. Futakoi Alternative had its fair share of action scenes, but the focus was more on the character development of the three main protagonists. The animation, color schemes, tone, and music worked together wonderfully to form unforgettable scenes that truly capture the emotions and atmosphere of the simple and carefree lives of Rentarou and the twins. I enjoyed every episode through and through, and even though bizarre plots like fighting squids and what nots popped up here and there, the artistry in the animation, soundtrack and character development more than made up for the lack in plot subtantiality.

The ED theme was awesome. I just couldn't get enough of it! And I found the plasticin animated ending credits to be rather creative and nostalgic as well. Truly a masterpiece; loved it!

OMG! What a disaster! From the slightly generic but enjoyable Futakoi, comes this unique experience which manages to equal even the worst animes i've watched.

Futakoi Alternative (FA) is different, to say the least, the unique direction and wide variety of characters as well as its iditoic story are its main points. The best bit in FA is how uniquely the direction of art and dialogue is presented, as well as the cool fan-service from soujou and Sara.. but thats not enough.. this show isn't good at all.

Even after the explosive intro with a cool first episode, you think there would be major potential with this alternate take on the futakoi universe.. but no, after the first episode, everything went downhill. The characters kept growing, the boringness grew ever more tiresome, the story just didn't fit. In fact, the show is so random, i find it really hard to make much sense of it all, the back-story' with the squid and military experiements etc is a silly one and really was it needed at all?
The many episodes where things don't make any sense didn't help anybody at all, its like a collection of random characters with a minor story per episode just to fill up some time. Tricked by the intro, there's not much on the action or comedy stakes (hey, that bath->elephant scene made me laugh, but thats about it), this is a severely dissapointing anime series in entertainment value (despite the flashy fan-service from naked soujou and sara)

I guess, i took things the wrong way, this show is about the relationship between Rentaro and the two girls, but the relationship is too obscure, too stupid, too long, too complicated. The random collection of still shots suppose to represent the quiet life between these three characters is done well i suppose, but this show is a whole lot of nothign when not much is happening. I didn't feel anythign for them, why should i care for some twins who came out of nowhere with no real develoepd background behind them? Why should i care for a man who is folowing his father's footsteps and believing that he can't make a man for himself?

Overall, this show is too complicated, too random, too boring, too quiet and too rubbish. Warning: Don't get tricked by the intro and first episode, the rest of the series is different.. in a bad way.

3/10
Grade: U

Forget the original Futakoi, this alternative world present whacky action and fun characters all in one package.

The animation felt like it was varying a bit, some SD characters were utiliized well but at some points it felt like they were cutting corners and not quite as polished. Nevertheless, it seems like the ending episodes received the higher end of the budget. The action scenes in the first episodes and the ending episodes were fun to watch nevertheless.

The op and ed themes are catchy and good to listen to. The soft music they played during the previews of next episodes were done well, really matches the black and white background they used.

The story swings from a calm atmosphere to that of a crazy one from time to time...making it very unpredictable. The storyline feels out of hand at first couple episodes, but it gradually slows down quite a bit to become slice of life romantic story. It stays rather laid back for a while before ending with a bang with the finale episodes. Unfortunately, this format feels uneven in pacing and some (I was actually turned off by the slow pacing in the middle before coming back to it to finish it recently) might be disappointed by the slow pacing near the middle of the story. Nevertheless, those who are patient will be rewarded by the emotional bits near the end. A nice story, just not outstanding.

At its heart, Futakoi Alternative is a love story about the main character and the two twins determined to stay together. It has its moments, but those who are expecting non stop action from beginning to end might be disappointed (rather misled by the beginning op theme sequence, since it's so action packed)

If it wasn't for Momotato Daioh's blog I probably never had started to watch Futakoi Alternative. Accompanied with some nice screenshots there were two sentences in the entry of the first episode:
1) Insert three paragraphs full of cliche phrases that do nothing but praise this show.
2) It rocks, plain and simple. Let's forget the other one ever existed.

Now the first series was something I never even considered watching but this description raised my interest instantly. The pictures promised some kind hc-action show with two cute twins doing most of the shooting. Like what could be better?

The first episode didn't leave me disappointed. It was everything promised. Eagerly starting the second episode... huh? Where was all the action? I mean there was some smoke in the kitchen but high-speed chases, guns, explosions? All gone. Undeniably funny and surprisingly peaceful from time to time but I felt lost. The action packed opening sequence was still there so I thought maybe this was temporary. I was wrong. More importantly the overall mood of the series was getting darker all the time. Sad kind of dark.

And this is both Futakoi Alternative's strength and weakness. The series is impossible to interpret and therefore it's very interesting to watch what happens next. On the other hand it kept me badly off-balance when I didn't know if I was watching action, comedy, tragedy or slice-of-life. Messing with the viewer's expectations works to a certain line and FA took half a step over it. Not to mention that the fast opening emphasizes the slowness of the middle of the series to an almost unbearable level.

Not meaning FA is a bad series. I liked how they build the mystery around Sara and Soujuu. There's so much affection between them and Rentaro that screen seems burst at times but there is also an ever-growing feeling that everything is not right. The main trio is so lovably cute that it's easy throw yourself into their troubles. The meaning of their relationship is revealed through the series that in the end it's hard not to agree how it ends. Surrounding them is group of people from their hometown who make the town feel like a big family. There's also some incredible people (namely the one policeman) that keep in mind that you might not want to take the series dead seriously.

I liked how the show was animated. The character designs are appealing and the action is, if not fluid, catchy and violent (I'm not meaning blood and gore but the way movement is depicted). There's a lot of still scenes that simply said beautiful to watch. The music is well with the show too. Switching from nostalgic to fast rhythm it follows the happenings on the screen. The opening and ending songs reflect the show as they are completely different. OP is pure action and fun and ED is love and yearning.

Recommendations? I don't know. It's a freaking weird show to say the least. Maybe if you thought FLCL was too far-out to watch this version diluted with cuteness and romance is more for you.

P.S. The series has action duo who calls themselves 'Gothiloli Mask'.
Q: How cool is that?
A: Very.

Animation : The animation is verry good, not much to note on it.

Sound : Futakoi Alternative has this nostalgic feeling to it, this is greatly induced by the music wich is verry good.

Story : The story starts off as an action packed detective story but slows down to a tear inducing romantic story. I really loved it.

Character : Although some characters weren't introduced or developed in the storyline (sumireiko twins and some others), this really wasn't necesary. The main focus of the story is on Sara, Souju and Rentarou.

Value : For people who like drama series like Kanon or Air but don't mind a little humor a la Excell Saga in between this is a great series.

Lastly : This series only inherits its character designs and a personalitys from the original Futakoi. The rest of the series is completely different. I really loved Futakoi Alternative and rank it as one of the top 10 series i've watched (and lets just say i've watched too many series alreaddy :) )

This is an ok comedy and I'd slightly recommend watching it.

If you haven't seen the first Futakoi, I it's not really necessary, but if you're planning to watch Futakoi Alternative, it will give you an idea of the characters' personalities and provide an interesting contrast to this series.

Alternative takes the name in a very strange direction, away from Love Hina and towards FLCL and Excel Saga. It sort of tries to be a love story, but is really a wacky comedy with some romance.

The jokes are ok most of the time, but feel far too much like FLCL, Excel Saga, Jungle Wa..., and/or Fumoffu, thus making this anime a bit repetitive if you've seen those.

Alternative ended up amusing me but was also rather bland. It was fun to watch, sure, just not an exceptional or original comedy.

This is a total differnt story than original Futakoi. This time they trying to do the badass action anime with a gang theme. The character presentation were cool, using diff color and slow-motion stuff. I never saw such a promising Op/Ed video... but too bad none of that stuff ever happen in the real anime. They always end the ep with a slow sappy video crossfade with sentimental ed song.

I think they might overly intense about the main char, making them mystery is one thing.. but how they turn out is not that serious(or atleast I thougt so). Weird enough this is not harem anime. It's a trilet for a team. 2 girl 1 guy as a team 4ever. Interesting stuff.. atleast more than the first one.

First things first. This is NOT an action/comedy/girls w/ guns anime. The opening animation & 1st two episodes are completely misleading, and those seeking a FLCL-like hyperactive type of show will be sorely disappointed.

Then again, maybe not. Because at the core of Futakoi Alternative is a well-constructed, albeit unrealistic, romance between three people.

Notes: Never seen the original and don't plan on doing so. Also, Futaba Rentaro is the luckiest SOB in the history of anime.

for me this anime ALMOST had everything. completly original from its predecessor. the same characters were used, well for the girls atleast, but with different personalities (even age i think). futakoi alternative has more of an adult theme but still as aspects that can be appreciated by everyone. from schoolkids packing heat, heavy romance, and EVEN fighting squids from underworld squid organizations, this anime really packed in many interesting variables.

I am so glad I picked up this title to watch after reading some people's reviews on this. In fact, I forgo the original title Futakoi and went straight into this instead. Futakoi Alternative immediately hits you with its opening whereby 2 young twins battled a monster and you can be led to believe that there will be more crazy things and wackiness to follow after that. It didn't fail to disappoint in that aspect. FA is peppered with wackiness throughout and only seemed to slow things down near the very end. Not saying it's fast paced action throughout, there are some slow moments in between but once those are over, you are subjected to some jaw dropping craziness again. Wackiness aside, Futakoi Alternative actually exudes a certain charm. The lovable and cute twin characters and the overall feel of the surroundings they are in, plus the ever so sorrowful ending song which seemed to fit almost each episode's ending gave this anime an unique sense of identity. The creativity in this anime is really quite magnificent although you feel that its potential can be much higher. The one downside of FA is its relatively weak ending but how else could it be better ended, it is really hard to say. Highly recommended.

Urggg, I just spent 40 minutes writing about why this is the best anime to ever grace the earth and its all gone because animenfo logged me out for taking too long. Futakoi Alternative is my favorite anime out of 60 some odd complete series I have watched. I dont feel like typing a novel again right now so the rest of my review will be light until I can come back and devote some more time again.

Animation Review:
The sets are amazing, the background art is worth looking at all by itself. Everything else is top notch and very stylish as well.

Sound Review:
They use -alot- of music in Fukatoi Alternative, and it all serves its purpose very well. The opening and ending songs match up very well with the two main themes of the show, crazy action and sincere relationship.

Story Review:
Futakoi Alternative's story is a many layered onion that we get to peel every episode. If you watched the series and felt there was filler material anywhere you have your brain dial set to dipshit. There is detail and meaning gushing from every crevasse in each episode, its just hard to see all of it at once.

Character Review:
This is what this series is about, you learn everything this is to know about Futaba "Nidaime" Rentaro and what his relationship is with the Shirogane twins, Sara and Souju. The whole cast leaves you with a feeling of origionality, no anime stereotypes here. Also, saying they reuse characters from the origional Futakoi is shallow at best. All of the twin's visuals are inherited, but their characters as people have been really re-invented.

Some final thoughts:
Be saved from bad anime and watch Futakoi Alternative.
