| This anime is listed as being both Action and Drama. But neither really describes this anime, in fact I myself find it hard to describe this anime...
Average Action:
The fight scenes are exciting and well animated but lacks depth.
The action is used more as an accessory to the story, its not about how they fought (the depth in action) but who they were fighting and why (the emotions)!
Mediocre Success Drama:
Note: Drama = Sad Moments
The story has an emphasize on drama but not all characters are like-able, you will sympathize with only a few. But I think it was made this way, you weren't supposed to sympathize with everyone, and I think different people will sympathize with different characters.
I think this could have been avoided if the series had more time (episodes), if there was an arc or two before the final arc then the characters could have been more developed and we would have become more attached to them.
Stellar Suspense/Thriller:
Don't get me wrong, the characters are very well made, they are so well defined that you will be able to guess what they will do most of the time. But this actually works toward (and not against) the story!
The clash between characters (or their fall from grace) are foreseen, but the outcome of these events are not.
This is what makes this a good suspense/thriller, its like you know the unstoppable force will hit the immovable object but you cant tell who will emerge as the winner. Either outcomes are possible because the story would be interesting in either case.
About the Ending:
It is true that the ending does not fit well with the rest of the series, but I was not exactly disappointed. I am not sure how I would end it if I had the choice.
This is why its difficult to recommend to anyone.
Those who enjoy dark themes would be put off by the cheerful introduction (10 episodes of the 26) and the ending that does not fit.
Those who do not enjoy dark themes may enjoy the ending but then they may not appreciate the final arc of the series.
Conclusion:
I have watched my fair share of anime (I'd say I've seen about 100 of the top 200 and then some). I have seen other animes that were "dark", but I have never seen anything quite like this before.
This anime is not afraid to go in the deepest and darkest corners of the human heart to examine "true love" - this is the theme of the anime if you ask me.

| It took me about a week to get through the first half of this show. It took me half a day to get through the second. Yes, it gets that much better, and must-see-TV as they call it. However, it’s far from perfect. Want to know why? Read on! Be warned though, due to its complex (yet sometimes retarded) plot this anime is hard to review without spoilers, so I’ll spoil.
Animation wise it’s good. For an action anime (*cough* gundam *cough*) with a female lead (*cough* Kamikaze thief Jeanne *cough*) there are surprisingly few re-used takes (The most used sequence is only like 3 seconds long and only repeats like 4 times, which if you saw GUNDAM Seed/Destiny you’d know isn’t all that much). Also, while I usually refrain for using this term for cartoon girls, most of those high-school girls were hot. Mai, however was not. And I, for believe that the hottest girl should get the lead ever since being tortured by constant shots of FMP’s Chidori in a bathing suit for at least a dozen episodes. Stupid, skanky, blue-haired, good-for-nothing piece of…errrrr…sorry, back to Mai HIME, the animation is good and pretty fluid. I liked the character design for almost everyone (a point deducted, though for forcing me through endless close-ups on Mai’s gi-normous eyebrows, and excessive underage female nudity, even if only implied).
Sound was great. Then again, music by Yuki Kajiura rarely isn’t. No VA stood out as particularly annoying. Due to my lack of understanding of the Japanese language, I’m unable to further comment on the subject.
If you change the final episode, this anime possibly has the best storyline ever, right up there with Deathnote (who, despite its ending did not fall to mediocrity). While nothing is truly explained or accounted for, the story hooks you, and takes you on a wild ride. Way too often was I grabbing my head and screaming at my TV: “Holy carp!!! Did he/she/it just die!!!! Is no one safe?!?!?! Doesn’t anyone wear plot armor anymore?!?!?! (a-la Kira “a giant robot exploded right in my face yet I’m right as rain after a whopping three days” Yamato), and then the final episode comes around, and the inevitable truth hits you smack in the face: EVERYONE wears plot armor, and the show brings them straight out of Hades, turns them sideways, and shoves them right up your candy-ass. IF YOU SMELLLLLLLLLL….Sorry… Anyhoo, despite the retarded ending, it’s pretty good.
The characters vary from superb (Akira, Nao, Natsuki), whom you may root for, pity, love or hate, but are bound to stir something in you, to Stereotypical, as demonstrated by Mai – the generic, energetic, kind girl who can’t admit her love, and by nothing short of a miracle manages to not become as annoying as FMP’s Chidori or Scrapped Princess’s Pacifica, both of whom are bound to haunt my sleep forever with their “cute” antics, as well as by her generic sick-boy brother, Takumi, and her stupid, utterly uninteresting love interest, Tate, to downright stupid, like that stupid sister, who gets date-raped, only to fall madly in love with her rapist. For the most part, though, the large cast manages to stay on the right side of annoying.
This is a fun anime, and one you must watch, and just might want to re-watch. Sure, the ending is dumb and more full of sugar than a dunkin’ donuts factory, but sometimes, it’s all about the ride, as long as the ending is, in fact, an ending, rather than a series of unrelated scenes (*cough* Evangelion *cough*), so it’s all good.
The stupid ending, as well as the lack of explanation for anything, keep this from being the best anime ever. But even as it is, it’s great, and the second half is well worth sitting through the exposition. And you know what? After seeing all those characters, you grow to love, go through the things these guys go through. Maybe a little sugar coating isn’t that bad…

| I believe that mai hime is beautiful series that was compacted into 26 episodes each episode makes you want to watch more until you realize that its over. This show is about girls who can materialize mecha animals called children. These children fight for the hime in order to slay and defeat these things called orphans. These orphans are pretty much like children but they were not assigned or compatible with a hime so they were rejected. Well there are 12 hime one for each month of the year. These hime end up risking more than just there lives to save themselves and the ones they love. I was stunned by the sheer emotion that was portrayed in times of sorrow and how each person no matter how powerful after losing the most precious thing in there life lost hope. These emotions make you feel completely depressed and even makes you want to cry from the just sadness of the entire show. Personally this show is just wow its just so beautiful. I definately recommend watching this its a must. Even though it is rated in the shoujo genre it most certainly is not. It is something that anyone can get into. I gave this review such a high rating because i feel that it deserved it. Its quality was just astonishing with how it was portrayed and how love is the greatest weapon of all.

| Love. The power to obtain, control and understand love is the theme that Mai Hime teaches through 26 wonderful episodes. With each character playing a role that affects the main, music that is not only uplifting but memorable and strong animation, Mai Hime is worth watching.

| How does one review an anime like this? I love Mai HiME, but it is a terrible series. The first 12 eps are really just to introduce the enormous cast. They are filled with action and moe situations to keep viewers interested, but this part of the series really has very little substance. But it is entirely necessary to watch the eps so acquaint you with the cast. Character introductions are handled well, so they don't stand out as in "character of the week" format. But once you're done watching the first half, there's really nothing to draw you back there.
Then the Sears plot arc sets in and ends around episode 18 I believe. Its entertaining and portrays more character development and plot structure than the previous 12 episodes combined. Its only flaw is that it is followed by the Dance of the HiME, the final event of the Ikutsuhime Festival (the overarching plot of the series).
The Dance of the HiME is one of the strongest plot arcs in all of anime. Its drama and intensity are unrivaled as all twelve of the HiME slowly turn on each other. Developments are unexpected, subtle, and extreme. This is the point where the series earns my love. The Dance is so amazing, when you rewatch it Mai HiME, you can't stand waiting through any other part of the series to get to it. But the real problem with this series is the last episode. It sucked ball and it ruined one of the greatest plot arcs in the history of man. Truly, a bad ending can damn an good story and remind us of all its faults. The ending is only bearable in AMV format with that terrible J-pop taken out and replace by the song "So Far Away". I mean, they have an entire soundtrack done by Yuki Kagiura and they play J-Pop at the last battle?! (if you can call that a battle)
Then there's the fact that the characters really aren't all that likable. I only really liked Takumi, Natsuki, and Midori. We really came to see the dark side of the rest of the cast during the Dance. And that's my point: we aren't supposed to like them. These are not heroes. They don't deserve a happy ending. Everything that happens to them they inflict on themselves. Those who act nobly are in the end consumed by the selfishness of the others. That is what made the Dance so astounding and unique and that is why the happy-go-lucky ending that appears out of nowhere totally fucks up the ending. I love this anime, but I hate that ending.
I highly recommend it, but be ready for a let down at the end.

| I don't know if anyone has ever taken a poll or compiled a list of the Top 100 greatest shoujo animes of all time, but it would be a safe bet that Mai Hime would be a heavy contender easily placing a spot within the Top 20.....if not in the Top 10 even! And though it IS primarily considered a shoujo series, Mai HIME seamlessly transcends the boundaries of shoujo fandom catering to a much wider audience with it's ample offerings of cool mecha, some pervy/ecchi humor and a lot of high-intensity action scenes. And if nothing I just mentioned interests you, you should watch it anyway because there's bound to be something you like about this show anyway!

| After watching this series, I can easily see why it is ranked fairly high on this site! Mai Hime mixes comedy, action, mecha, and a bit of love-romance that really does a good job of telling a story without boring you on history. My only real complaint would be that it kinda slowed down a lot in the middle and left a few loose ends. Overall though, if you like mecha action with school girls, I recommend Mai Hime! (I want Mai's cooking... ^_^, if you watch the series, you will understand that)

| If you're looking for something typical of anime, then Mai HiME is right for you. Its story follows Mai, a girl who discovers her superpower as a HiME (Highly-Advanced Materializing Equipment). She transfers to Fuka Gakuen, not knowing that it is a school that gathers HiME from all over. She then encounters the other HiME and establishes relationships all around her, as a much deeper secret about the HiMEs is revealed.
The anime starts out well enough, but it declines towards the end. Since Fuka Gakuen admits both boys and girls, there has to be a complicated web of relationships. Mai's love interest(s), mingled with those of other's, becomes extremely irritating after a while. Towards the end of the series, everything turns into an action soap opera. The usual stunts are thrown to increase the amount of drama - love triangles, inevitable deaths, etc.
The characters were not original in any way. There's Mai, a cute girl who's good at cooking and watches out for her younger brother, and Mikoto, who is hotheaded and naive but hungers after Mai's cooking. There's Natsuki, a hot girl who rides a motorcycle and uses a gun-like HiME weapon. I could go on, but all you need to know is that the HiMEs are all attractive girls with complicated personal lives. Also, the HiME powers include a "child," which is some beast that each HiME possesses. Those are what put the mecha theme into the anime. I suppose they looked cool, but I wished they had been explained more. You never figure out why they exist or what caused HiMEs to exist. The ending isn't very satisfying because none of the big questions are answered. There are so many characters, both good and evil, whose purposes remain hidden.
The pacing of the show was horrible. The plot bloated during the last few episodes. I know that a huge list of characters and details had to be crunched into 26 episodes, but the few worthless fillers could have been replaced with more plot and character development.
All in all, it was an average plot with average characters. Nothing that good, nothing that bad. There was a lot of potential for it to be really good, but as I stated before, there was too little development.

| In the end the story didn't seem to go anywhere. Everything was pretty much right back where it started. From happy to dramatic--even overdramatic--back to happy. Even character-wise very little ultimately changes. I don't know if it followed the manga or not.
A bunch of hot chicks with some ecchi. Quite a bit of mecha. Lots of dueling. I don't know who this series is really targeted towards, as I can't imagine an ideal audience. The sound was ok, a bunch of girls' voices and a few songs. Just one OP and ED. The OP is all right. ED I didn't like. Not many songs within the series itself.
The sub was really good. But nothing seems to make up for the forgettability of this series. It's not one I'll find anything to talk about with people. I only watched it because I was fishing around the top 200 list for anything that looked okay. And I didn't see any deep meaning in this one either--it was just about loving your friends and love here and love and caring there. Kinda flaky stuff basically. Can't say I recommend Mai Hime in the end.
I'll be moving on to Prince of Tennis and hoping that's better.

| My Hime is a 26 episode anime made in 2004, which covers a high number of genres and impresses viewers in almost every way.
The character designs, style, animation, use of CG, and level of detail are all excellent. Graphic wise, My Hime demonstrates the highest quality in anime series, which makes the fan service scenes all the more enjoyable.
The same can be said about the music in My Hime. Both opening and ending themes, and the various songs throughout the anime, are very pleasing to listen to. Although they don't fit in with the storyline anymore in the later episodes, they are still of very high quality making the OST of My Hime a must have. The voice acting and background music in the series are also top quality, adding greatly to the personalities of the characters and the mood of the scenes.
My Hime has probably the most unique, exciting, and unpredictable storyline I have ever seen in an anime series, which only improves over time. It starts off for the first few episodes as just another comedy school life anime, then suddenly changes into a mecha action anime. Half way through, the story takes a huge turn and the anime almost becomes a very dark drama. In addition, small plot twists continuously take place between the main story changes.
The only possible downside to the story of My Hime would be the ending. The story takes a tight 180 degree turn in just a few minutes of the final episode, which might throw some viewers off track, and changes from the drama back into a comedy. In a sense, this change might be the cherry on the cake for a fast paced anime as such, but it will no doubt be too fast for most people.
The combination of excellent character designs, top quality voice acting, and the unique storyline automatically gives My Hime an amazing cast of characters. The character designs ensures that every character looks unique and are expressed in the best way. As the emotions and personalities of the characters are constantly changing in My Hime, the voice acting adds life to the characters and makes those changes believable and logical. My Hime is definitely one of the very few anime where, after countless emotional turmoil, makes viewers understand the feelings the characters are going through.
I would personally describe My Hime as a dynamic anime. It is one of the few anime that explores so many genres, and emerges better every time. In my opinion, My Hime is a must watch for everyone. It has a bit for viewers of all genre, and although it might not suit everyone's taste at the start, given time, My Hime will most definitely become the favourite among most viewers.
In terms of value, My Hime is a must have. It is extremely rewatchable, and the OST is excellent.

| Let me put my feelings about this anime into perspective: sometimes I buy a series on DVD and, if it turns out good, I let it take up some of the precious shelf space in my room for display. If it turns out bad, I trade it to friends or try and sell the discs somehow. My-Hime (or Mai-Hime, whichever you like) has the distinction of being one of the few shows that I simply had to keep because it was like a fascinating train wreck that you knew was a horrible, horrible thing... but you can't help but want to see more of it.
As soon as I finished watching the series I felt so polarized by certain aspects of it that I just had to get my two cents out there about it. I've divided this review into two parts: the good and the bad.
Lets starts with the BAD. The most obvious thing is the pacing. The show moves at a break neck pace which, while surprisingly enjoyable, seems to try and squeeze every drop of character development from characters as quickly as possible. Well, what's the problem with that? As most other reviewers mentioned, there's a cast of almost 30 characters, some of which get very, very little screen time and others which only get a scant few moments of the limelight. The pacing actually isn't *that* bad, but it is noticeable and does more harm than good. Moving along, we have some of the most massive plot holes. Examples: what exactly ARE the orphens that the Hime had to fight in the first half of the series? Why does a Hime's extent of her sadness even matter when they start battling each other? Why does Nagi do what he do... aside from being pure evil? Why is the Hime Festival even necessary... and what's this about the Hime's cursed fate? So many unanswered questions, completely (and possibly purposely) overshadowed and ignored by the rest of the show.
My biggest gripe with the show was the characters. In the end, you do get to know them somewhat and you'll probably have your favourites, but the internal logic the show uses to move the characters along their individual journeys is so off-kilter at times that I often found myself grinning at a scene that was supposed to be very serious or emotional. Characters will sometimes say something out of character because it suits the scene. There were a few times were characters seemed to change their mind on a subject just a few scenes after they reacted a certain way to something. My favourite has to be the fact that there are occasions, especially in the second half, where a character will articulate their beliefs or their feelings for something and what they say will sound like a wild throw from deep left field when you compare it to what they've already said. Despite everything I've written about the characters here, their actual journeys are rather interesting and its fun watching them work through things even thought it doesn't really make that much sense.
Okay, lets move on to the GOOD now!
Firstly, the animation is superb. Others have said it wasn't up to par with other shows, but I found the action scenes to be exhilirating and well choreographed. Especially Mai and Mitoko's fightings styles, very smooth and visually impressive. Character designs are also very appeal, if erring a little bit on the younger/cute side of things. There's also a good deal of fan service for those interested, especially in the "omake" segments following each episode.
The music that accompanies the show does tend to get a bit too busy for its own good, but the melodies fit and end up being a plus. Sound effects (at least as I could tell) were quite well done.
Lastly, despite some serious flaws, the show was kind of a blast to watch. Its nowhere near the rock-solid high entertainment you can find in shows like Planetes, Scrapped Princess or Ghost in the Shell, but is much more similar to shows like Orphen or S-cry-ed.
My advice: if you're thinking of watching the show, it may be something that you may end up fancying, but approach with caution. Personally, I can't bring myself to recommend it.

| This started as a corny, typical magical girls/shoujo anime with a little more action. However, I have to say that although the animation is certainly not the best I've seen, the character and storyline certainly grapped my attention. Sunrise did a really good job on developing the characters. The openning soundtrack 'Shining days' and ending theme 'Kimi ga sora datta' are great + catchy, sound effect in general is just tops.

| Like others I went into this one with low expectations. It was ranked fairly high on this site so I checked it out though. I was pleasantly surprised by this one.
It starts out as a typical fan-service driven school comedy with average fight scenes with their "childs". Fun enough, but nothing mind-blowing.
However about midway the show takes a lurching turn into some seriously compelling action/drama content. The characters are pretty strong in this one, especially the lead, Mai. It's all fairly unpredictable and I was in serious addiction mode until the end.
The anger and sadness that the characters feel is well conveyed, and I was impressed by the emotions that come across.
This one is a must-see that's also helped by the fact it is SO easy to watch; I blew thru all 26 eps in about a few days. This one is one worth watching.

| Mai HiME is an interesting anime, which I really didn't think I'd enjoy as much as I did. It's kind of a mixture of Evangelion, Transformers, Pokémon, Sailor Moon and Love Hina, except it isn't crap. In fact, it's very good.
The artwork is superb and the animation is great, so there's absolutely nothing to complain about in that field. The sound is also pristine, with fantastic voice acting and nice music. The soundtrack resembles the one of Noir, which is one of my absolute OST favourites.
The story is difficult to judge, and the score is dependent on what you weight in. A lot of stuff is based on mythology and legends, but that means little unless you recognize them. The basic premise is merely "OK", but the story develops into something pretty interesting. I personally choose to weight in the symbolism (in contrast to Evangelion, the symbolism is accurate and not random philosophy BS) to boost the score a little. About the ending: you either love or hate it. I loved it.
Mai HiME sports a host of characters. At first, keeping track of them is a bit tricky, but their designs are miraculously so different that you quickly learn who's who. To add some seasoning, a lot of the characters also have a Child (a Transformer Pokémon) that you need to remember! The character development is great, and the intrigues (especially between Mai, Tate, Shiho and Reito) were amazing. I was also very impressed by the way emotions was conveyed. There are some very emotional scenes in this anime, and they were VERY well made. Some of them I've re-watched, and I'm on the verge of tears each time I do.
Since I had low expectations, I could watch the early episodes with a smile on my face. It was nothing spectacular, but it kept you interested and introduced you to the host of characters. There are a lot of fanservice, but not so much that it can't be ignored if you don't like it. The first few episodes are OK, then it turns good, then great and finally, just past the middle-mark, it turns awesome. I enjoyed this anime 100 %, and even liked the ending, although I can understand why many can hate it.
*TO ALL OF YOU WHINING ABOUT THE ENDING*

| My hime (or Mai Hime) is an excellent show with great character development. I love how this show allows all the characters to develop instead of the usual thing where the main character changes and grows while everyone around them remains static.
Natsuki is by far my ultimate favorite character and I love how this show also focuses on her story instead of just Mai's.
The ending theme and beginning theme arent among my favs to listen to but the background music during the episodes definitely brings the story to a new level with the right amount of variation that depends on the scene.
This anime has a nice balance of comedy mixed with drama and a lot of action without becoming repetitive and boring.
I would definitely recommend this anime to anyone looking for a good anime to watch.

| mai-hime starts pretty slow then hits the climax and the end is just bad. it reminds me of a rollercoaster because there were some eps that really got my attention and some that just didnt meet the potential it has.
the story can be told short. there is girl called mai that joins a schoold together with her litle brother. there is a rumor at school that once a monster appeared and just the HIME can fight them. mai appears to be the strongest one. what a surprise.
from eps 13 to 25 the anime really got me interested. there are many unpredicted situations and i was surprised because it all was so unusual for this kind of anime. just these 12 eps would have gotten more than 9 points average probably. if you want to enjoy mai-hime ti the fullest stop after eps 25 because you will remember it as tragic and sad story of a girl that tries to protect everyone but loses all she loves. after seeing eps 26 i thought that next time they should use the dragon balls to make everyone alive again.
the animation is very well done. its very detailed and the fights are no bother at all.
the sound was one of the points thta could have been better. every good anime has a melody that you connect with it. mai-hime is no good one.
for the characters i have to say they did a good job. mai wants to do everything herself since she lost her parents. she makes herself ill with this behaviour and there are quite some deep and intelligent dialogues included. but the last eps ruined it all.
i think mai-hime is worth rewatching it again. when there are no new good anime perhaps i will have a second look at it and maybe i am happy in the end that everyone survived.

| (fansubbed by Static-subs. One of the best translations I've seen, both in form and content. The last episode adds further info about the characters. Very good overall, even if it is too much for a show like Mai-Hime)
Fortunately Mai-Hime didnt turn out so bad as I expected it initially to be. Havent watched Mai-Otome yet. The feature that attracted me to this anime was that young and very nice designed girls, with OK voice actors would take part in duels and those duels would involve some mecha robots taken out from mythology and also the beloved persons of each girl would be put at stake. So I judge this anime mainly for that and I didnt care about any of the romance, school or comedy aspect, that were mediocre btw.
Only similar anime I had seen was Rozen Maiden and the much better Rozen Maiden Traumend. In comparison to these shows, Mai-Hime has overall better and more serious characters but suffers greatly in story and the atmosphere isnt that dark. The first 6 episodes tested my patience and I seriously thought to watch another title. But since the show (from what I heard) turns better after ep 7 I waited and indeed it got much better, offering the action I needed, till the final episode.
If you like animes with overall no story or substance, but with good animation and sound, dark atmosphere, plenty of action and good and attractive female characters, Mai-Hime is the perfect choice. It didnt dissapoint me, who now tries to abstain from such titles.
Then there is supposedly to be a story. All the Himes are taken out from mythology, there's also a Seers foundation that influences politics, there is also a typical fight for the world plot etc. I didnt bother with any of it.
Characters were memorable and very good, if you have the patience to watch all the episodes. In each episode the characters get better and better. Unfortunately the main character Mai was the most uninspiring and mediocre character, while all the rest were decent. Thanks to her great design though I let this pass. All kind of characters are here, so you'll like some and dislike others.
Animation is very good. Music is also nice but it seemed like out of tune with the battles sometimes and wasnt used as effectively as, say, Noir.
The battles and the characters interaction during them is what makes the anime worth watching. If it werent for the mediocre first 7 episodes I'd rate it higher. Some episodes are worth rewatching too.
Of the good popular titles. But do not expect a brain teaser. If you're tired of more mind-boggling titles Mai-Hime is (after a hentai) the best relaxation anime

| I have to admit guys that I terribly underestimated this anime when I viewd the first 7 episodes. It pretty much looked like childs play and and anime that depended on a few perverted moments to catch attention. But after eps 8 it got really good, but I mean really good!! It was an amazing ride for me because all of the magnifisant display of human emotion was not only real but they added even how sick love can turn into. The animation, characters (many taken out from japanese mythology), value and enjoyment were awesome. There was one thing however I didn't like about the sound and was when Shiho comes out to bother her brother (wich really isn't), I just hated that percution sound. And the story was interesting and it always kept you interested in the next one, but I didn't like the idea that the more love you had the bigger is the Hime, just seems to corny to me and the whole magical girl thing (even though they turn the idea into a whole new level).
At any rate this is an awesome anime wich is defenectly valuable enough to watch.
