| I had heard about Master Keaton 2,5 years ago but since I was being reintroduced to anime (I'm an 70s and 80s anime and cartoon fan, with very few exceptions) I mistakenly thought back then that I had better to titles to watch.
Now after having watched so many titles where the same motif is repeated it is no surprise that MS and the OVA especially are some of the best series I watched. I wouldnt mind rewatching it instead of looking the recent titles.
If this title is better than Monster, then I dont mind ignoring the latter since I read the manga too.
The initial episodes were watchable but after episode 10 the series quality improves dramatically. Probably it had to do with the fact that the initial manga stories either were mediocre or the TV direction was still experimenting. Because I cant explain why for the rest of the 29 episodes the worst of them are much better than the first 9 episodes.
Animation hasnt many frames but the character design and various European settings are exceptionally drawn. Characters expressions coupled with memorable voice actors (dub and sub) ensure some of the most memorable characters. But of all the episodes only 1 has two parts. So considering the 20 minute format the characters are excellent. The series could have easily been produced as live-action with an international cast. But some animated moments, especially the ones with animals are unique and funny.
The series has variety. Though I didnt watch the first series in a day, after the middle it turned out enjoyable. Every episode has a moral lesson to show.
The main character is unforgettable because he doesnt steal the spotlight but lets the other characters develop. In many episodes he is a secondary character. A character that does not force his way into others and into the viewer is a rarity in todays crop of anime.
The series isnt that widely known but since Monster is that popular maybe more will turn to watch this too.
The series delivers everything, from comedy to drama in a balanced way. And most of the episodes are memorable, something difficult to achieve considering most of them are stand-alone

| The true predecessor to MONSTER. One of the biggest surprise I've come to see this year. It's an old serie from 1998 and I must admit that the first 8 or 9 episodes aren't even in the league of the rest. The stories got more and more impact with the time. It's the kind of serie with an overall background set in stone for the characters, but there is always new stuff happening which keep the story interesting. Further you go, more you come to know the past of the characters which lead to the actual situation.
All in all, I enjoyed this one better than monster mainly due to the right amount of episodes. Really worth your time if you like things like Monster.

| Incredible! this anime really suprised me a lot. As a martial arts profesor I´ve learned many things in terms of survival and military methodes and training. I´d recommend this anime to anyone thats more interested in great character development, story and enjoyment rather than great grahpics. By the way the anime was made in 1998 so the graphics aren´t that bad for the time.

| Master Keaton is an amazing integration of science, history, humanity, and action set in a rich European historical context, as well as its ties with Japan. Hiraga Taichi-Keaton is a half-Japanese/half-British archaeologist who skills and abilities include a combination of MacGuyver's know-hows, a University Professor's brains and knowledge, and Steven Seagal's fighting skills. However, Keaton is a very reserved, passive yet kind man, who does not like sticking his nose aimlessly into everything. He often pretends to be stupid and unable to lower the guard of those around him, but soon impresses them with his survival ability, strength, perseverance and knowledge.
While the story pacing of Master Keaton is episodic with absolutely zero connections between episodes, Keaton and the few support characters are enough to maintain a constant interest in this series. Each episode is just very 'smart'. More importantly, each episode is amazingly well-crafted and has its own themes which touch upon various facets of European and ancient history, as well as various traditions, cultures and landmarks. Of course, having such heavy ties with the non-fictional world as well as heavy monologues that reflect the past days paves way for potentially boredom in some episodes, but on the whole Master Keaton doesn't fail to impress.
Overall, Master Keaton is one of those few unique animes that really have a story to tell. While there is neither a linear-plot nor an ultimate goal/villain - Master Keaton's presentation is very complete and consistent. Add on a lovable and modest Keaton, and we have a very solid work. I would recommend this to only the patient, the curious and the mature. My favorite episodes were the action-oriented ones, but there are many historical archaeological adventures as well. Essentially, all episodes carry a very similar feel. My recommendation: Try it out, get a feel. If you like it. Keep watching, it only gets better.

| Excellent anime. Master Keaton's methodical approach to seemingly difficult problems astounds the viewer every episode. Overall, very good and well worth a watch.
