| Gleich vorneweg: “Macross – Do you remember love?“ ist leider keine direkte Fortsetzung der Serie sondern stellt “nur” eine alternative Version der Macross-Story dar, die zwar die gleiche Basis aufweist sich aber inhaltlich in vielen Details vom Original unterscheidet. Das heißt aber nicht, dass dieser Film nicht unterhaltsam ist. Da knappe 2 Stunden die der Film andauert nicht ganz ausreichend sind, erreicht „Do you remember Love“ von Seiten der Story und der Charaktere zwar nicht ganz das tolle Niveau des “Vorgängers“ aber trotzdem gelingt es dem Film die Handlung interessant rüber zu bringen und für ein paar tolle Höhepunkte zu sorgen. Die Kriegs-Story, geht auch dieses Mal Hand in Hand mit der Romantik und beides wurde in diesem Movie ebenso gut wie in der Serie miteinander gekoppelt. Die Beziehung zwischen Hikaru, Minmay und Misa ist nach wie vor emotional und spannend zu verfolgen, wobei sie dieses Mal sogar zu einem leicht besseren Ergebnis kommt als in der TV-Serie und mich am Ende des Films sehr zufrieden zurück ließ. Misa ist nach wie vor ein absolut liebenswerter Charakter und sogar Minmay hat mich nicht ganz so stark genervt wie sie es noch in der Serie getan hat (auch wenn sie sich kurz vor Schluss mal wieder wie ein selbstsüchtiges Kind aufführt). Einzig Hikaru hat sich etwas zurück entwickelt und er kam mir ein wenig blasser vor, aber dennoch spielt er seine Rolle zufrieden stellend aus. Die Nebencharaktere verkommen leider etwas zu stark zu nebensächlichen Statisten aber wenn man die Länge des Films berücksichtigt ist das wohl unausweichlich gewesen. Was mir an “Do you remember Love?“ besonders gefallen hat war die letzte Szene. Sie hat mich irgendwie sehr bewegt und auch wie Misa und Minmay zum Schluss mit sich ins Reine kommen hat mich freudig gestimmt. Nebenher haben sich die Animationen erwartungsgemäß, deutlich gesteigert im Vergleich zur Serie und auch der Soundtrack bekommt ein paar wirklich tolle, neue Songs hinzu (das Kyuun, Kyuun-Lied ist natürlich auch wieder dabei…). Alles in Allem kann ich nur sagen das “Macross – Do you remember Love?“ eine gute Ergänzung zur TV-Serie ist und selbst wenn sie deren Niveau nicht ganz erreicht, dennoch für tolle Unterhaltung sorgen kann. Nicht nur Fans von “Super Dimensional Fortress Macross“ zu empfehlen sondern auch jedem der mal in das Macross-Universum reinschnuppern will ohne sich gleich die ganzen 36 Episoden der TV-Serie anschauen zu müssen.

| A movie version of the Macross TV series. The basic storyline is intact despite the drastically reduced length, with several interesting changes. The quality of the animation, especially for the dogfights, is smoother than the original, which is nice. However, it's not that big a deal since the quality of each frame isn't a comparitively huge improvement, being of the same general era of anime technology.
The biggest weaknesses compared to the television show are, not surprisingly, shallow secondary characters and less satisfying writing. Unfortunately I consider the nice cast of mature side characters to be one of the main strengths of the original, so it really detracts that their effect is missing. The story suffers from this (as well as simply weaker writing), feeling a little too over-the-top and fluffy compared to the epic seriousness of the series. Cutting out all the subplots and nice vignettes seem to leave a less intriguing, but still entertaining space opera. It captures the feel and general story arc of the original, but it's not a replacement by far.

| This was the first anime I saw in the 80s (along with the drawn-out, more childish TV series) and it is one of my top 3 favorites. Seeing it again as an adult has not reduced any of the magic. Considering when it was made, Macross DYRL is a masterpiece and a landmark film. It is the best mecha story I've seen. The battles are gripping and thrilling like the Matrix. The characters and love triangle between Hikaru-Minmay-Misa are very genuine and well done (I don't think they'd get away with the slapping scene in this 'politically-correct' age). The theme song is excellent, and is still touching every time I hear it (even though I don't speak Japanese). In my opinion, this film is to mecha anime like Star Wars was to sci-fi Hollywood. But the beauty of Macross is that it doesn't rely on action and special effects alone; it has tender romance, great personal conflict, and poses provocative questions about identity, duty, and purpose through the eyes of humans and aliens. Roy is the ultimate space cowboy like Spike.
