| Evangelion: Death & Rebirth is an abysmal cut-and-pasted anime movie from the original Neon Genesis Evangelion series with a slightly further developed, but equally lacking and confusing, ending.
The animation is identical to the 1995 anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion, as most of the movie is directly cut-and-pasted from the original series. Sadly, quite a bit of the movie is cut and paste from the lower quality second half of the series, and the animation quality of the additional content near the end doesn't differ much from the first half of the original series.
Most of the audio is also identical to the series, there was no new opening theme, and I for one disliked the new ending theme. A lot.
The storyline is nothing short of an absolute mess. It's confusing, badly paced, poorly developed, and doesn't conclude, just like the original series. In summary, Death & Rebirth is a definite no for everyone who pays the slightest attention to storyline.
As a stand alone movie, the character development is absolutely appalling as barely any is done for any of the characters at all. As a sequel to the original series, the character development is equally appalling if not worse for the same reasons.
Evangelion: Death & Rebirth is a movie that will put any viewer off Neon Genesis Evangelion, if not for life, and will make people who have watched Neon Genesis Evangelion throw up. It fails as a sequel to the original anime series, and fails as a stand alone movie. Overall, this particular anime movie is a definite don't watch, unless you are looking for the worst of the worst in anime history.

| You must watch NGE series before watching this. And if you did watch this first, you would not understand a thing. It does not make any sense. The only thing which is making me watch this is because I have seen NGE series and movie, and I can say this is a waste of time. It is just cut and paste from the original series making a movie which makes no sense. You cannot follow the story if you tried watching this alone, you also would not understand the whole eva concept by watching this 50 minute show. Its not bad, only that it ain't enough for any character building. And for an instance the cut and paste is not linear, a thing which happens further into the anime, occurs opposite here which adds more into the confusion.
There is no fan service in this anime, the sound are the same, more likely taken from the series an nothing else in this. There is also no character development. All you see is those robots fighting monters a lot in this.
No mater how much an eva fan you are, you cannot possibly want to keep this thing as its junk. The only thing new is a violin scene which is not actually a scene, its more of a showing some backgrounds accompanied by music around 2 minutes. It does not make sense since everyone is fighitng in the beginning, and the abrupt ending too makes no sense in the music.
Don't bother watching this

| What exactly is the "Death & Rebirth" OVA in relation to Neon Genesis Evangelion? Well, I believe its main page at AniDB describes it best:
"Originally a collection of clips from the Neon Genesis Evangelion TV series, Death was created as a precursor to the re-worked ending of the series. Rebirth was intended as that reworked ending but after production overruns became only the first half of the first episode of The End of Evangelion, with some minor differences. Over time, two newer director`s cuts of Death were produced, each including new footage not seen in the series - these were called Death (True) and finally Death (True)^2. Note that despite containing clips from the series, Death (True)^2 & Rebirth should be seen after the series itself to be fully understood."
Due to REBIRTH being the first half hour of the "End Of Evangelion" OVA, I am simply going to focus this review on DEATH, since I`d end up repeating myself later otherwise. For a review on REBIRTH, please read "The End of Evangelion" review.
Visuals:
Since DEATH is just a collection of clips from the series, spliced with about two minutes of new actual footage, it can`t really be analysed properly. Because of this, I would advise reading the techincal breakdown of the Neon Genesis Evangelion series review for information on visuals. It`s just useless to go over it again here.
One thing I will say though - the visuals lose some of their epic feel due to just being a collection of scenes, with a few different bits of dialogue being voiced over them. And the new footage - it`s only 2 minutes of the whole (the whole being about an hour and a quarter), whilst indeed pretty intruging, is no visual masterpiece, and for the most part, quite subtle. It is nice however, to see NGE in widescreen.
Sound:
The sound has a similar problem to the visuals. All the sound aspects are indeed good, but with them being sporadic in a clip format, they don`t necessarily do as good a job as they did in the series.
However, a new feature to DEATH over the series is the classical music, which for some strange reason, gives DEATH a more self-contained feel, separating it from the series somewhat. It sort of makes DEATH feel as though it has more of a narrative than it lets on, making it appear to be more than just a collection of clips, and rather, a mega-montage, with the classical music providing an atmosphere for it.
Story:
Let`s not make DEATH into something it`s not - a proper story. When it comes down to it, it is a recap of the NGE series, with a small amount of extra prelude footage and a small amount of extra footage to tie different clips together or provide some flow. There are very little unique points that I can say for the Story aspect of DEATH - but I don`t feel it necessary to try and do so. Put quite simply, it is something to see for a quick analysation of the series.
Character:
There are no new characters in DEATH, nor are there and real advancements to character development or relationships that weren`t already in the series. Any new footage of characters in DEATH over the series is mainly to do with providing flow to the OVA, in the form of the main trio coming in one by one into a room to join in with a strings quartet rehersal. As each new child joins, new clips are shown.
There are some small parts of the OVA where there is new dialogue over certain clips, which further describes the mindset of some of the characters, but to be completely honest, I didn`t find it all that intriguing because I though it obvious and already implied.
Value:
For a NGE fan, DEATH is worth watching once, and I think only once will be enough for the majority. There is nothing to really go back and watch over again - even any of the new footage isn`t particulalry worth it in my opinion. Personally, I would want to watch the whole series again if I suddenly had an Evangelion craving - to watch a montage of clips is in no way the same.
The reason I have not given the Value the lowest score possible is because of the DVD - suprisingly the (R1) DVD of DEATH & REBIRTH has a nice array of Evangelion-related extra info which I like in my collection.
Enjoyment:
To see anything Evangelion-related provides instant interest from me, and that`s about the most of my feelings towards DEATH. I can`t say I really enjoyed it because what I actually enjoyed was the series. I can only reccommend DEATH to the hardcore NGE fan, because the casual viewer would definately feel ripped off by it.
However, REBIRTH (the first half hour of "The End of Evangelion" OVA), is another matter. But please read my review for "The End of Evangelion" (coming soon) for more information regarding it.

| *A short review*
Well Death & Rebirth is not really a movie in my opinion. It really didn't even need to exist because it has no purpose but just to make mopre cash. The Death part of the so called movie is what goes on in the first half of Evangelion showing how they defeated each Angel in the first half. The Rebirth part of the movie is what happens in the second half of the series.
Animation - They took parts of the series so its the same as the series. Which is not that bad. Kind of like a copyvand paste.
Sound - Same as in the series which means its good. Sanme voices and same music.
Story - Tells what happened in Evangelion with very little detail. Do not watch this before the series you won't understand hardly anything.
Value - Not good for rewatch. Not very recommended if you haven't seen the series yet.

| If you like watching Rei, Shinji and Asuka playing the violin then this anime is a must watch. If you're bored to rewatch the series episodes up to number 24, this is also worth watching. If you havent watched Evangelion or dont know what it is all about stay away as you will not grasp anything at all, except maybe the names of the classical music composers.
the only big change is the editing since it gives some new perspective to each characters thoughts.

| I was reluctant to review this for a couple of reasons. Number one being that compared to the series, it is a disappointment, and two, it is hard to get a grip of due to its structure. “Death and Rebirth” consists of the “Death” portion, which is essentially a recap of the series, and “Rebirth”, which is the start of “The End of Evangelion”. Being an owner of the compilation release “Revival of Evangelion”, it is difficult for me to frame where one starts and the other ends, but I will do my best.

| This a part of the Evangelion series that you probably don't have to watch unless
A) your a die hard Evangelion fan who wants to see every associated with this series
B) You didn't see all of the series or forgot some of the things that happened in the series.
With that said this is just a bridge that leads to End of Evangelion, that recaps things that happened to help you understand what happens in the last installement. I gave the story a 9 even though I gave the series story a 10 just because it's really just a recap that doesn't even cover every thing that made the series one of the best of it's time. Likewise the value and enjoyment aren't that of the main series.
This is a good anime, and this summary definately helps bridge the series and the movie, but if you just want to hurry and finish this series this isn't really necessary.

| Evangelion Death and Rebirth is basically a glorified review episode. Nothing new was revealed in this that wasn't covered in the tv series or End of Evangelion. If you want to know more read my review.

| Heh, I can't believe this is getting such low scores. I guess most people just aren't as patient as me and loath recaps. I, on the other hand, found this an excellent addition to the Eva series. If you haven't seen the series, don't bother with this, it won't make much sense. Since this was released 2 years after the series, I suspect the first half was supposed to serve as a reminder of the important of the events in the series. In my opinion it did it very well, bringing up all the key points of the anime creating tension and puzzlement, setting the scene nicely for the second half. I hear due to production overrun, the second half became the first half of End of Eva. I haven't seen the End of Eva yet, but to me this anime sets it up very well indeed. Brilliant production, brilliant music, an excellent bridge between the series and End of Eva. There's not really much to fault this anime on, only a few minor quibbles: A lot of the times the words flashes across the screen far too fast in between the scenes - what's the point of having it at all if people can hardly read it? The intermission was a nice touch I feel, but it lasted too long. Should have been one song instead of two imo. The end music didn't match the length of the end credit, resulting in a being repeated over and over again. That was somewhat annoying. Some of the characterisations and monologues are still a little sh*t. But that's about it really. In terms of what it meant to do, there's really not much wrong with this at all.
Edit: value is lowered because the end of eva makes this virtually pointless. It's a shame because for me, this is easily the most flawless part of eva.

| Evangelion:Death & Rebirth are actually seperate chapters in the finale of NGE. Death functions as a rip from the television show, featuring clips and a little bit of new animation to further elaborate the cycle of Death (ironic, no?)where as Rebirth is just that, the rebirth of the world in the coming of the 3rd Impact. Death remains as elusive in meaning as the finale of the TV version itself where as Rebirth really gives the viewer something to hold onto. If for no other reason one must watch Rebirth to introduce them to End of Evangelion. E:D&R is not a bad production but it felt somewhat boring getting through Death. Worth owning for most NGE fans though.

| I really don't understand why this is a necessary bridge between the series and End of Evangelion. Not much enw happens here except for the last 15 mins which ends up being repeated in End of Evangelion anyway.
It's not that memorable. Some of the scenes are animated well while some look completely rushed and paper-mache like. The music isn't that great, no real new development in story, Shinji continues to plunge to new lows. Only Asuka and Misato make this even worth watching. As always the Evangelion females were the strength of the anime while the males were truly awful.
Might be worth watching once, but as a collector's item, not really worth it unless you're a junkie for everything Evangelion. I'm not.

| Remember that episode of Bebop where the guy on TV was sucking everyone's soul out? I think Death&Rebirth and End of Evangelion came from that guy. What's to say that hasn't already been said about this movie? The first half is nothing but a long recap. The second half is the beginning to the End of Eva. So basically there is absolutely no reason to watch this unless you are just a mega fan and must see everything Eva. I did like the Orchestra part they included, but not enough to justify the rest of the movie. I was pleased with the original conclusion to Eva. I'll watch Eva again but not these movies.

| Okay, i havent seen all of this series, i just flicked through it throughly which probably cut the viewing time by a quarter to a half, but DON'T let that fact put you down on reading this review.
firstly i have already seen the uncut versions of NGE and i made sure that i have seen all scenes in these 2 installments. (which were all already in the uncut TV series version)
the animation was great. better than the TV series IMO, the music was really good, nice following msuic that compliments a review episode well, which is what i thought this to be.
well in short, watch this if you are a NGE fan, if not, this will be as boring as hell.
EDIT: also i really didn't see the point of this lol, really i didn't, especially to call it a movie.

| The thing about this release is that it doesn't seem to inform the casual viewer of the story effectively, because it leaves out too many details in the main story; details already known to the otaku who've probably seen the series a million times already. And that teaser of the movie at the end, with the actual movie now released, brings down the worth of this release. I only have it because I require completenesss. For the rest of you, save your time or money.

| The unnecessary link between Neon Genesis Evangelion the series and the final movie End of Evangelion. "Death" is a confusing recap of the series and "Rebirth" is the first part of End of Evangelion. As I cover End of Evangelion fully in my review for it, I will ignore "Rebirth" here and concentrate only on "Death".
To retell the first 24 episodes of a 26-episode series within an hour or so, two important decisions have to be made: what elements of the story are given priority and to whom the retelling will be made - to those who have already seen the series, or the newcomers.
For the story, the ever-so-audience-friendly people at Gainax decided to include the majority of the important plot-points of the series without explaining any of them to the detail, while arranging them into a weird sequence that is neither chronological nor follows the order they were presented in the series. Thus, it is probably very confusing to anyone not already familiar with the original series.
The way the scenes are re-arranged is very interesting. The humour and light-hearted moments are gone, as are many of the philosophical elements. What remains are basically psychological forays into each of the main characters' personalities with some very nice, but excessively used still-frames placed in the middle of original footage. Still, there is only a very little new content - a few unseen/modified scenes here and there - so no one would probably want to see Death right after finishing the series.
Which leaves us with the main flaw of Death: it doesn't really have any target-audience. It is too confusing to those unfamiliar with Evangelion and gives very little to us who have seen the series already. The only case where watching Death could be recommended is when you have watched the series long ago, don't have the time to rewatch all of it and want to refresh your memory before going into End of Evangelion. In pretty much every other case watching Death is probably a waste of time.
Nevertheless, it is the same Neon Genesis Evangelion with the same wonderfully developed characters, and thus something that the many fans can't completely ignore. I'm one of them.

| First half is a full recap of the series, second half of death and rebirth are the first 30 minutes of end of evangelion, you can basically skip this one since it doesn't have anything new to offer.
A review anyway : Sound and animation are good, story still gets a 6 since we get to see first part of end of avengelion, same goes for characters. No real enjoyment in it since it's full recap and obviously made to increase sales ...
In short : skip it and watch end of evangelion instead

| What the hell was this... SKIP IT COMPLETELY AND JUMP TO End of Evangelion. Seriously this is nothing but a cash cow to suck as much money from the fans as the producers possibly can. A "recap" of the TV series with a starting for End of Evangelion... truly wtf!!!
If more detail is required on what this tries to summarize is in the NGE TV review and could be coupled with the EoE review I have posted.

| Um, thanks for recapping everything and wasting my time. Watching this told me nothing new about the 26 episodes I had previously watched. While it did contain extra footage, there is very little substance here. I hate recap episode swith a passion.

| If you liked Evangelion A LOT, then you will like it. For the people who hate it (like me) or think that Evangelion is just good, you shouldn't watch it.
This is a simple summary of the series with classical background music. Two or three new scenes or re-drawn for better animation, but that's all.
To me, this is only a way to take money from the fans.

| Well to begin with Death...
It's almost only flashbacks. So to say it was a little boring to watch an hour of flashbacks when I've seen the series four times...
Then to Rebirth...
It's very well made. Though it is the typhical "Manga Entertainemnt" animations. With other words there are a lot of internal bone structure/organs shownin the fighting scenes, though the amount of blood is to small.
