I don't know why people are complaining about this anime. It's based on the first manga by Kurumada made in the late 1970s before he made Saint Seiya. Also, this is probably the first series that really established the Shounen genre in Japan so stop dissing the show without any background information on the manga. HNI and RNK are just two very different series made at different time periods and should be treated differently. Hajime No Ippo is more like Ashita No Joe (First boxing manga) and Ring Ni Kakero is more like DB but remember RNK was made before the Dragonball series.

I find that a lot of reviewers here are being way too harsh. First of, complaining that an anime isn't realistic is idiotic. And so what? Does that detract from the fun? Second, besides using boxing as a fighting style, it's not a series in the same vein as Hajime no Ippo, so please stop the comparisons. It's not a stellar series, but it's quite a fun one.

Ok I just wanna say this is one of the worst animes I’ve ever seen… or maybe it just seems like that if you compare it to the masterpiece of Hajime no Ippo… o wait no that ain’t the thing, it’s just that this anime really is one of the worst I ever seen… I mean what were the guys who made this thinking??

Animation:
Well this is gonna be long... The character design could have been a fashion trademark in 1988 in an anime that featured cute guys dressed up in skimpy metal suits like it was in Saint Seya… but come on, these is 2005, all the big fluffy and messy hair is in the past, the character design is just horrible, not only because the guys look ugly and childish but because this is a boxing anime and you just don’t wanna see to girly looking wimps who look almost the same fighting in a ring… Further on the old fashioned crappy design doesn’t work well with the CG effects at all… And then comes the fighting scenes who seem to have been made for some Dragon Ball Z movie or something, is it just me or do the wimps have some kind of super power magic punches? Are the fights suppose to be dramatic and artistic? Is this suppose to be a level higher then Hajime no Ippo?… no way man, it’s just unrealistic and really really stupid… in my eyes this is one of the worst animations ever.

Sound:
Not much to mention here… voice acting is mediocre, so is the background music… I haven’t seen many episodes so I’m not really sure about it.

Story:
We have the epic wannabe story of the rivalry between Ryuji and Jun, the soap-opera story, the brotherly love story… What a mix of stories… the guy learns boxing from his sister.. the guy’s a genius who can throw unseen punches… noooooo I can’t go on with any more explanations… it’s a waste of time for me, or maybe it just seems like this cose I keep comparing it on higher standards of Hajime no Ippo.

Characters:
Old fashioned…. I’m not gonna go into it since they’re not worth it.. they’re just to one sided.

Value and Entertainment:
After 8 episodes I decided to stop watching it since it’s a complete waste of time… I don’t care about the fact that it was made by the same guy who made Saint Seya this is just to horrible to watch…. If you want to se a good boxing anime just stick to Hajime no Ippo.

Takes suckiness to an all time low. Even though it tries to turn a boxing match into an opera, even though it tries to be Hajime no Ippo without the street creds. It fails miserably.

Kurumada Masami, man you are the man you made that sweet shonen show Saint Seiya and now this pile of dung heap ruins your rep brotha!

Put this in the same bin you found Buzzer Beater and light up a buddha and buy Saint Seiya anime and manga, those are good, this is bad!

When you struggle to get through the first three episodes, you know something's wrong. In honesty, it looks like some company thought they could just take crappy animation, crappy story, and throw in boxing and have a good anime series, they were wrong. I was incredibly excited when I heard about this series, as ever other boxing anime and manga has been at the top of my list(aka Hajime no Ippo, Ashita no Joe, and Katsu), but this was clearly not. What it lacked in story, it didn't make up for anywhere else. Posibly the worst anime I have ever seen, would rather have watched KIDS WB's crappy dubs than this.

o please, this anime is so bad!
The haircut of kenzaki and ryuji are so damn ugly. The animation-style is oldfashion characters mixed with newfashion bgs. The story is so boring.. totally not interesting. Ryuji's dad died.. so he and her sister(Kiku) decided to leave her mom, do become pro boxer. OMG! Really don't know what boxing has do to with this anime, except they were gloves in a ring? This anime really gives bad name to boxing. And there "tactics" are so braindead. Please boycot this anime! It's horrible. First anime that I hate, seriously!

If you were expecting this to be the next Hajime no ippo, do not because it is not an anime based on realistic boxing. Actually the manga from which it has been adapted is very old, and was the source which its author Masami Kurumada took from to build the characters' galactic attacks of its next big hit manga: Saint Seiya. That's why you'll see very exagerated power punches in Ring ni Kakero, which is just the style of fighting chosen by the author.

Same goes for the characters of Ring ni Kakero: they seem to look very old fashioned, because for this anime instead of using the same modern and good-looking design of Saint Seiya by Shingo Araki who greatly improved the manga characters look from the manga, Toei Animation chose to make the characters look just like the original style of Masami Kurumada in its manga. For me it's not that bad because it's somewhat refreshing after dozens of Saint Seiya episodes, to look at the nearly same looking characters of Ring ni Kakero but with a different design.

Well I got excited when I heard theres a new boxing anime cuz im a boxing fan and love hajime no ippo. But when I saw the first 2 episodes it really dissapointed me. IT's more like DBZ with gloves....the combinations during the match sux. They trew same punches the fighting is too unrealistic unlike hajime no ippo. I dont think that this anime will be good. The character the envirement is bad dont like the drawing that much.

The tactics, fighting and punches are just too unrealistic. No combinations no real punches they all have fire or something, the ring explode like 300 times.....bah dont watch this if you want to watch a good boxing anime and one of the best watch hajime no ippo.

The story is just sooooo bad father died and sister learn her little brother boxing en went away from home....the sister also a relationship with the rival of her brother....WHATEVER-.-
Stay away from this anime its cursed

Ring ni Kakero is based on a manga that is nearly three decades old. I say that not to excuse it from any "failings", only to explain that if it seems old fashioned, that's because it IS. For those of you that are used to more modern shounen manga, this might very well prove to be a big turn off.

However, I think dismissing it outright is foolish. I see the person below me already thinks he knows the entire scope of the series. This from watching a single episode? Pretty impressive...

Or, at least, it would be if it wasn't wrong. Yes, there is focus on Jun and Ryuji's rivalry, but just as importantly, there is focus on team interaction, friendship, sibling relationships, and even love. Trying to boil the entire show down to "two boxers that are rivals!" misses too much of the other things to be accurate.

As an aside, I've seen five episodes and counting, so I do have at least a little bit of a better idea where it might be going than others. I'm not saying that anyone is WRONG to dislike it, only that I think it is premature to judge the whole thing on one episode alone.

I can see this being a show that will be popular to revile, simply because its roots are too old to be trendy. In the very least, it will be a love it or hate it show. I find that to be a pity, because once you get past the flashy, silly surface, RingKake has a lot to offer fans today in many different respects.

Just one episode and I'm turned off already, something which rarely happens to me. This anime will probably be about Ryuuji and his rivalry with Jun, while both on the way to the top as boxers. Not ordinary boxers however, since they also use superspeed punches that the audience can't even see and special moves that cause big explosions.

Reason why I didn't like this is the oldfashioned drawing style, the corny characters and dialogue, and don't care for the whole boxing premise either.

This is probably for fans of the original series and similar animes only. I've seen the first 3 episodes now and it had its moments but it just couldn't keep me interested personally.

The animation is pretty old school, resembles something that was made in the 1980s. The review below is correct in saying that this anime is a lot like St Seiya, but I disagree in giving this series all 10s. Considering that it is 2004 now, the presentation leaves a lot to be desired.

The sound didn't really leave any impression with me after watching, so I guess it's probably mediocre. Since it's just the first episode, the plot isn't fully developed yet, so it would be wrong for me to comment on the specifics.

But what I can say is: it had better pick up soon... All in all, I would say it's a below average production compared to other new releases in this season. Watch only if you have time to kill.
