| Truely one of the greatest anime movies ever made. If you like action, even in the least, you need to see this over the top, ultra-violent movie the first chance you get. Set in a post apocalyptic world similar to Madmax, you are transported to a world full of dust and death. The strong feed off the weak, and only one man, Kenshiro, had the might and will to stand up to them.
Definitely not a thinking man's anime, but I feel that every movie should be judged on its own merit, not compared to everything else. I have watched the movie several times and almost every anime fan I know loves it.
If you can't laught at a movie because it's just "so bad" then this isn't the movie for you. Fans of Army of Darkness should flock here because this movie serves mainly to make fun of itself.
I have no clue why everyone else rates this anime so low because it's truely a classic. One last thing, if you don't like The Fist of the North Star then "you're already dead!"

| If you enjoy laughing at übermacho action, you have to see this.
The hero travels around the Madmax-inspired post-apocalyptic world inhabitated by tough and manly macho punk fighters. He defends the truth and justice by brutally exploding people with the legendary Fist of the north star skill.
Truly legendary, oldschool classic. Just don't expect flashy animation. Works well on small lan-parties while boozing ;)

| An unfortunate and badly aged anime, since the storyline was made to be both action and had an awful attempt of making it into a principled concept. It gives too much of a doubt of making itself another part of the image from the good vs. evil kind of scheme, but for its poorly attempted storyline I had to give them some credit with the progression of the somewhat tragedy that it revealed. The situation is based on the typical setting of the usual horrid post-apostolic future. On the other hand, the characters that supported the story was giving of what is meant for the qualities of humans with the power of greed, social anxiety, and worst of all total despair of what their future might result to for the upright people who lived in fear. This however, didn’t seemed to be able to have a great impact of making the effort of resolving itself as part of the originality that it had concluded with its ending. But as a long running movie, it seems to have no reasonable twist or a good level on any substance of actually relying as a decent, or even a standard type of plot.
As for the animation, very shoddy from most of the time. Almost all of their action scenes had those choppy and irregular movements to be felt as a valid fighting event for its less average character designs. I mean, you have guys who are animated with big bodies and tiny heads for goodness sakes. I’m not saying that all of the characters were like this though, because each of them were unbelievably different from their type of personality, especially with the two younger children who are the basis of the storyline of their so called glimmer of hope, which had some degree on the character level. The sounds, which were mostly the music was fine, but the voices had some irritated and repeated scenes from those fights with the main character. I found this slightly aged anime to have some extremely terrible content in it. This is, after all a classic for its time, as well as recieving as much variety on its reputation that may had been given in the past.

| Everything about this is a little poor, but yet, perhaps the gratuitous violence comes off quite funny here. And actually, the story is not that bad as complex themes come off from certain scenes in this apocalyptic world. A classic known to all, but perhaps it's because of the genre?

| I am, of course, reviewing the English dub of this film, because it is funnier.
You know, I made a drinking game for this movie a few years ago, and every time I see FOTNS I notice still more places to drink at. It's a neverending saturnian romp.
Oh, and one more thing; there was a guy a few reviews back who said this movie is shorter than he remembers it. I can only assume he must have grown up in a torture camp or something, because Fist of the North Star literally feels like it's nine hundred hours long every time I watch it.

| I gave my scores based on the time it was made and its budget, but FNS is a classic anime that is under-rated. Sure the art is horrible and the violence is over-the-top. But from an era of Hollywood films like Road Warrior and Escape from New York, this film/series approaches the post-apocalyptic fight for survival genre with a different touch. The fight scenes are unique and creative to say the least, but of course get too long and repetitive in the TV series. The dialogue can be tedious (and the kid characters a bit annoying), but provocative themes are mixed like spirituality, family, destiny, and of course love. There are plenty of better animes out there, but this one is noteworthy and respectable for the time it was made.

| I loved this movie, I watched this when I was 12 at first, the fighting just amazed me, they would just pump you full of adrenaline. I watched this again last year when I was 16, have to say, it didn’t stand up to the scrutiny of time, but it was still very much how I remember though it was a little shorter than I remembered.
For its age, the animation was brilliant I thought, a bit dark you may say but that was what made it so memorable. Even now, the animation’s quality would still be regarded as good, no less than average.
The sound had metal included in it if I remember correctly, if it did, I think that’s the only good part about it, generally, it wasn’t too good, but didn’t annoy me either, the voice acting I saw in English dub and some of the characters were annoying as hell, but those were only side characters. The main ones really did earn their titles as “heroes, I think almost all teenage boys would agree with me, they are just so cool.
Wasn’t much on the side of story, mostly fighting with a story just there to bring the movie along. It’s strange but I liked it, the movie didn’t try to give a story that it couldn’t manage but instead focused well on the fighting scenes.
This is a classic, though not everyone likes classics, you should give this a chance, you may well be pleasantly surprised.

| I watched this a long time ago on VHS. The first anime I ever saw actually. While the story was near non-existant and utterly stupid, and the animation was shabby (characters grow and shrink relative to each-other when they move and weird stuff like that).... I loved it! Watched it 2-3 more times. It was hilarious, but obviously not for reasons intended. The previously mentioned growing and shrinking characters. The stupid excuse for a story. The screaming.. oh the screaming, for no reason people scream a lot in this one. The pointless powers some chars have. The dialogue that tries to be cool but is pointless. It worked for me :)

| Let's be objective, shall we? This was published in 1986. So you cannot judge it by today's standards.
That being said , this anime is ok. It tends to be really gore and the story is ok. The art is really weird: guys with fists as big as their heads (and probably just as thick) and muscles way larger duke it out in a bloody "epic".
The ending I found out to be a little lame: things don't get resolved in a good way (totaly my opinion of course), but oh well.
Recommended.

| The only reason it isn`t the worst anime ever, is due to the year it was spawned. It`s not the violence that makes it bad, it`s the idiocy of the violence that makes it bad. Brains exploding from it`s skull? Even martial arts movies from the 60`s weren`t that lame. It`s enjoiyable because it remind`s you of your childhood. The most retarded things among many were the showing of Rhao`s power by crushing the heads of those stautues and the fact that their arms were thicker as their legs. Any martial artist or bodybuilder who sees this wil either laugh, cry or become hommicidle!

| I would have to agree with Anjin-san for this review. Although I thought it was acceptable at the time, the movie pretty much sucks by todays standards. The only good thing about it is the whole punching people and watching them explode - but even then, Id prefer to actually see some fighting once and a while, not just exploding of body parts.
On a side note, why isn't the Fist of the North Star TV series listed on this site?

| I watched this back in 1994, after a period of time where I hadn't watched anime in quite a few years. I thought it was acceptable back then. Watching it today makes me cringe, and it is the kind of anime that I've come to hate. Apocalyptic world, tonnes of blood and violence, and loads of characters devoid of any.... character.
Suffice to say, if you're new to anime (or into this kind of stuff) you'll probably like it. If you're more of a connoiseur, you'll probably find it below mediocre or just hate it.
Anyway, whatever you do, don't buy it until you've seen it first.

| -MUST SEE ANIME-
Back in the day when I first saw this, I thought it was amazing. Subsequent viewings at an older age have tarnished my opinion of it somewhat tho.
Don't get me wrong, I think everyone should watch this. It's one of those "must see" animes like Akira, Ninja Scroll, or Ghost In The Shell, in that it sets a benchmark in it's anime style, and any animes viewed thereafter with a similar style should be graded with this in mind.
The visuals seem dated now, but they're perfectly acceptable. There is good detail in the violence, and the post-apocalyptic world has been given care to.
The sound has one of the largest "dated" factors tho. The quality just isn't good enough for todays standard, but with that being said, it's decent for the time the anime was made. The ambience is suitable for the surrounds, and the voice acting and musical score is also satisfactory.
The story is ok, but underdeveloped. I know there's a series of this anime, but I haven't seen it and so can't judge where it fits in to give it any bearing.
The characters however, are best parts of the anime, each with their own skills and techniques. It's just so good to watch them let rip their special abilities on their foes.

| It's a very bad serious action movie.
If you don't want to be deceive by this anime, watch it as a comedy.
I've never seen an anime so stupid than Hokuto no Ken. The creator had a lot of imagination to make people die from different way but it was done from a so stupid way.
-Hey wait a minute, I was talking about the other guy.
-Silly me. What a foolish mistake.
-I think I've gotta split my headache...aaaaaaaaaah !
This dialogue was too dumb.
The animation is very ugly even for an anime from the years '80. Akira was released two years later and it destroyed all other anime and the animation was wonderful.
It deserve a 10 for enjoyment for making me laugh for all stupidity it had.

| Well, this title is certainly not for everyone. But I must say Fist of the Northstar has been very innovative series at the time it was made. And yes, it has a plot and a freaking message too, very global message indeed. And don´t tell me Love Hina or Abenobashi MSD has more message or plot than FOTNS. It shows the world through pain, and it´s so extreme it´s hard not to like it. Today´s shows are too light for my taste, so i grant this anime a very good grade.

| This anime is very violent and bloody, if you enjoy an anime for the fight scenes go watch it. The animation wasn't bad nor good, I had no problems with it. The sound sucked and is not worth commenting. The story is who will battle Ken next. Characters, what characters, the only thing worth mentioning is Ken's amazing ability to make people explode in one hit. Basically if you want to watch a bunch of muscle-heads with enough blood in their bodys to fill an ocean battle it out, this is for you.

| This is the grand-daddy of all fighting anime. Quite good character design and animation as well as some of the most graphic and innovative violence ever seen onscreen. The animation of this film still holds up quite well today even though its almost 20 years old(just look at the scene when Rao declares himself Fist of the North, or the opening scene of nucleur holocaust for proof). Ending of the film is mesmerizing as it shies away from what one would expect. Characters have real human motivations with which the audience can empathize or detest unlike many more recent fighting anime as well as terrific special techniques. Story is cogent, though not particularly complex. But in this genre complexity is not to be expected. A whole lot of very well-executed, fairly mind-numbing, and slightly campy fun. Poor american dubbing only adds to the camp factor (by the way, even the title is mistranslated, it's really Fist of the North). Highest Possible Recommendation. Even if you don't like anime, but if you're into violent films, check this one out. This is my favorite piece of anime besides Macross.

| Come on now! Mystical pressure point instadeaths with air-brush blood? Excellent! And that guy with the lines coming out of his fingers? Forget about it! The animated series, I sadly note, does suck, but the movie ties in the best parts of the series and presents it in a concise, and more importantly, clear way. The movie was the first anime I saw back 10 years ago when i was a teenage miscreant and the action still captivates me. So much I still have the NES version of Fist of the North Star in original packaging.

| Ahh, Fist of the North Star... For a long time this held the award for being the most violent anime ever made. From the opening scenes it is made clear exactly how much blood you can expect to see as you watch it.
Unfortunately, once you've wiped away the blood and closely examined the action scenes, they are really not good enough. They're decent, but considering the main appeal of this anime is action, they should have been better.
In between action scenes the fast forward button comes in handy. The storyline, while a bit interesting at first, is for the most part uninspired. The ending leaves you wondering if the writer was rushing to meet a deadline when he wrote it, because it makes no sense whatsoever.
If you're into a lot of gore, by all means, watch this movie. Or better yet, go watch something like Ninja Scroll. If you're a person with a weak stomach, avoid this movie at all costs.
(As a side note, there is an episode of Excel Saga that parodies this movie, so to fully enjoy that episode you should watch Fist of the North Star. It is also parodied in Abenobashi and other anime.)
