I really enjoyed this anime. It's like watching Champloo with guns, which I think is a pretty unique idea. Maybe it's not executed as well as it could have been, but it's still enjoyable to watch.
This is one of those anime's you can just pick up and watch when you want to see some hack and slash; (or hack and shoot).
The animation is really good, but the characters aren't as deep as they should be. Ichi Matsu is a very mysterious person but they don't really explain his situation very well.
Ihave fun watching this show and if you aren't too critical of everything like most people here are, you will enjoy this anime.

One word: BAD...

Here is an anime that went strait to dvd licences (that's to be expected from ADV). I've rented vol 1 and 2 because it got a 9.0 from Play Magazine which I love. But, the lasting impression wasn't really convincing.

Animation
Does the job, somehow blocky and looks pretty old and outdated compared to recent anime outbreaks like Samurai Champloo or Gankutsuou. Caracter designs are OK, it wont hit you in the eye. If you like lots and lots of red, you may be pleased. Overall, this anime doesn't appeal at all.

Sound
Does the job and doesn't exceed. Sometimes, it gets pretty repetitive and annoys. Feels like getting in to the Dragon Palace bar and earing that same song over and over :(

Story
Lots of potential: Ichi Matsu's past stories, gun powder influences, samurai guns mysteries and womens. The story is good and interesting; it still goes for a "monster of the week" thing but unveils a little by little about each caracters. But the most frustrating part of the anime is its presentation into tons but tons of lame cursing frases. Four letters words like f*** or s*** are very common and they annoy me. Well I guess if you can get pass these, you may enjoy the anime.

Characters
Some are great like Ichi Matsu and some feels like they don't have enough importance like Kurenai and worst: some just appear out of nowhere in the story and disappear like they were plot-fillers.

Value
Avoid. There are better animes out there.

-If you like ancient japan stuff with a little twist, Go and stick with Samurai Champloo.

-If you like gunslinging, go for Trigun.

-If you like great stories: go for Gankutsuou.

-etc...

But for your own interest, I've went through the suffering of watching this anime so you don't have to.

Avoid at all cost.

Bottom line: Great story potential but went through a wrong path of presentation that caused its downfall. You probably have more fun watching the ADV preview included in the Extras menu of the DVD

DVD notes: it's presented in 4:3 fullscreen aspect, if you own a widescreen tv (16:9), it will strech...

When I seen the trailer for Samurai Gun I had high hopes. It looked pretty good, however I read some bad reviews for it. After watching the first volume I have decided it isn't as good nor as bad as I thought it would be.

The animation and sound is not the best, but not bad either. The characters are not the best...but not bad either....I guess what I'm getting at is it is a average anime. It has no real story line. Just a group of "samurai guns" being samurai-ish and keeping justice. Feels like I'm watching trigun or cowboy bebop in a way...just not as good...well maybe better than trigun...I didn't care for trigun.

Anyway, if you can get past the samurai gun weilding and some bad scenes...bad scenes? Darth Vader's "Noooooooo" looks genious to some of the lines in this series. If you don't mind watching prostitues get murdered, screwed, and beat in every episode then pick it up for some random action...nothing real deep here.
