| Auf die Frage welcher Anime sie zu "The Matrix" inspiriert hat, antworten die Wachowski Brüder stets mit "Akira", "Ghost in the Shell" und "Ninja Scroll, wenn man sich jedoch "Megazone 23" anguckt wird man dazu verleitet anzunehmen das DIESE OVA als Vorbild gedient haben muss. Hier geht es ebenfalls um einen jungen Mann der eines Tages dahinter kommt, das seine und die Welt aller andere Leute um ihn herum nur eine Täuschung ist, die der Menschheit von einem Supercomputer vorgegaukelt wird. Nebenbei wird im Hintergrund auch noch ein Krieg ausgefochten in dem eine Gruppierung von Leuten versucht den Computer zu stürzen und natürlich schliddert der Hauptcharakter direkt mittenrein. Diese Story ist heute zwar nichts Neues mehr, aber sie schafft es dennoch für Spannung zu sorgen und dazu zu motivieren sich diese OVA von Anfang bis Ende anzusehen. Vor allem begünstigt durch die vielen aufgeworfenen Fragen, wie z.B. was der Computer genau ist und welche Intention er und die Menschen verfolgen die sich gegen ihn stellen. Eben das gleiche Prinzip wie bei "The Matrix". Desweiteren ist auch in "Megazone 23" die Action das zusätzliche Unterhaltungsmedium und man bekommt neben rasanten Verfolgungsjagden auf Motorrädern auch Mecha-Fights und einige Schießereien zu Gesicht. In der Summe präsentiert sich der Action-Gehalt und der Mystery-Faktor als ausgewogener Mix, bei dem beides nicht zu kurz kommt. Was meiner Meinung nach allerdings etwas zu kurz kommt sind die Charaktere, denn auch wenn man den ein oder anderen Blick in ihr Innerstes gewährt bekommt, so bleibt am Ende der Eindruck das ein Großteil der Figuren einfach nur lapidar seine Rolle spielt. Der Cast enthält zwar gut erkennbare Anspielungen auf die Situation der japanischen Gesellschaft zum damaligen Zeitpunkt (Bubble-Economy) aber so richtig will sich ein Bezug zu ihnen nicht aufbauen. Ein weiterer Kritikpunkt an "Megazone 23" ist dass, das Potential der Story am Schluss nicht gänzlich ausgenutzt wird. Es gibt zwar eine Fortsetzung aber die hat man so ziemlich in den Sand gesetzt, in dem man die Story extrem pseudo-komplex aufzieht und den Zuschauer nur noch unnötig verwirrt anstatt die potentialträchtige Handlung aus diesem Teil auf entsprechend pausibler Basis weiterzuspinnen. Am Ende bleibt mit dieser OVA aber dennoch ein sehr kurzweiliger Myster-Action-Ritt zurück der bei der Stange halten kann und trotz ein paar Macken kaum Langeweile aufkommen lässt. Ich kann mir nicht helfen aber ich glaube das die Wachowski Brüder "Megazone 23" nie als Inspirationsquelle für "The Matrix" nennen, weil dann jeder sehen könnte das sie nicht "inspiriert" wurden sondern einfach nur geklaut haben! ^^

| I saw this anime back when I first seriously started to watch them.
The visuals are pretty decent for an 80s effort. Certainly not perfect, but good. Gritty action, well thought-out environments, and nice artwork make it above average.
The sound is excellent. I wasn't really fond of the the soundtrack but I must admit it gives the anime a good overall tone. The various sfx are top notch.
The story is above average, but only just. It has a nice setting, but the main plot wasn't really all that great in my opinion. It flowed ok however, and when it wasn't intriguing it filled the view with nice scenery. It all still felt a bit ameteur tho, as if the makers were still experimenting with how to do things before producing better work.
The characters were pretty much forgettable and below average. The villian seemed decent, more so than the hero(s), but I wasn't particularly interested in any of their relationships or development.
Not a very good replay value for me. I'd only really watch it if nothing else was on. All in all, a pretty average anime, marred quite a bit due to its age. Pretty cool to see once, but that'll probably be it.

| Megazone 23, now this is a true anime classic. One of the first OVA series to be produced, it features excellent 80's music, and very detailed and fluid animation for its time. The characters are very likable and memorable, notably the honorable badguy B.D. It has a very cool cyberpunk feel to it, and the transforming motorcycle steals the show. A saga of rebellion, 80's style.
Megazone 23: Part 2, featuring a motercycle gang riot scene that was certainly an inspiration for AKIRA, is my favorite chapter in the trilogy.
