Fight scenes are great, considering the year the anime was released. The sound in certain situations is acutally quite annoying, but avoidable. The story is like all the other super power animes, think of DBZ etc.

Heh, Flame of Recca. It was extremely predictable, and this made it a weak anime. In most anime you know what is going to happen, but this one is too obvious. They just dont lose fights, have unlimited power, and keep getting up. Enemies cannot hurt Recca, he just gets right back up over and over again and then beats his enemy. I enjoyed watching it, but what an unbelievable anime. It was just not believable, you just didnt understand why he would keep getting up when it was obvious that he should have been down by then. Bodies hae limits, and this anime just doesnt put this into perspective. Im sorry, but this ruined the anime.

Firstly I have read the entire manga and the manga was not that briliant. The anime was even hopeless. Not only is the colour, scheme, animation not that true to the manga, the store is incomplete. And this is clearly one major upset for me as I was hoping to find a direct adaptation. Not sure how it got into the top 200? Very much Dragon Ball manga-anime adaptation but a lot worse

I didnot expect much from Flame of Recca. From the first episode itself, it had all the hallmarks of a shonen series with the hero being the typical brat who gets in a fight since he wants to protect someone 'special' (Oh, how original!). Also considering that this is pre-1999 series, chances of a good story were not very good. But, I was mistaken. Flame of Recca is nothing but putrfying garbage on the name of all shonen - it is nothing but another version of DBZ...

There is not much to offer here. Recca (brat) meets Yanagi (damsel in distress). Some people are after Yanagi because of her powers - so he, alongwith his friends protect her by fighting idiots in a tournament. There you have it - this is all the story for it's 42 episode run. The story is nothing but Recca (or one of his friends) entering a fight and then moving on to another one. Plain monotony is something what this series generates perfectly. Even worse is that there is no closure in the end - the story continues in the manga for another 14 volumes.

It has been mentioned that Flame of Recca is good for its fight sequences - I have to deny this. There is nothing that great about the fights - it is only the hero first getting wounded, then getting up to defeat the other competetor. Good fights are shown in series like Gantz and Berserk. Flame of Recca has fights which can compared to WWE/TNA coupled with magic.

The characters are all idiots. We have the usual stereotypes here. Recca: Brat with low IQ. Yanagi: Damsel in Distress. Then we have our Mr. Brawn in a 6 foot brute (forgot his name), Mr. Reserved who doesn't like to joke (forgot his name as well) and the compulsory female sidekick. Whta really ticked me off was that none of these characters goes through any shred of developement throughout the 42 episode run. Even the relationships between the characters are static. All they do is develop their powers to yet another new level. I have seen series with 6 episodes with better character developement.

Is there any part of Flame of Recca which is good. Yes - the fights from Round 3 onwards are good. Though I must stress that they have been done better in the manga from Round 4 onwards. The series tries to wrap up by this time, the final round (the best of all) is completely idoicy in the series. The manga remains better.

I do not recommend Flame of Recca. If your good anime is defined by 5 people entering 526847124 one-on-one fights to save their friend, then this would be your show. All the other guys, please avoid.... Watch Naruto or Getbackers instead if you want to watch good shonen.

I don't really like this anime, well it has a quite nice plot but all of those pointless fights drags itself down to the bottom.

I think the "side story" (story of recca and kurei's past) is nice and quite intriguing (to tell the truth that's the only part in the whole series that got me hooked) but here's the problem, the overall plot doesn't include the side story much. Having 50 or more episodes, if you sum up all the stories, it won't exceed 5 episodes as the plot is more focused on fighting and tournaments and that's where it fails. And its formula has been used for ages, just look at the tournament, Recca and his team will fight with all the others then the final battle will be with Kurei, it's so predictable. The only thing that got me interested is when Kagerou sent his son to the future, it's quite touching to see a mother who would do anything for the sake of his son even to sacrifice herself. The ending is disappointing, after the final bout nothing happened, you'll just see "the end". Can't they think of a better ending? And what about Kagerou? can't they find a way to cure her curse?

The cast are not interesting and they won't win your sympathy. I think of Recca as pathetic, Yanagi is just like a cheerleader, don't remember her saying much but calling out Recca's name as he fight. Mikagami is silent stereotypical character just like Rukawa and Sasuke. And everyone lacks substance.

It's just like watching a xerox copy of yuyuy hakusho, pointless fighting are thrown everywhere in the series. I definitely won't watch it again.

Flame of Recca really isn't anything too special, but it is at least an enjoyable watch. Of course, take into account the fact that it was made in 1992, and you would be hardpressed to find this (at least a good version of it). The only real reason to watch this would be for the action, so don't expect great things from anything else.

overall this is a really well done anime, but it would be generally appreciated if the creators of it would have the courtesy to finish what they started. In the final eppisode it delibrately leads the viewer into believing that the series is unfinished. However, according to the web this is untrue and the series is completed with only 42 episodes. So, generally speaking its a well done anime for the 90's and it just needs to be completed. (hint hint)

With anime like this, I can verify my little theories regarding state of mind of common Japanese anime industry worker, say scenario writer.

In case of Recca no Honou (Flame of Recca) it's quite simple how did his brain work:

Take interesting initial concept, make first fights really interesting and well animated. Then pick up OK characters, with few twists and decent backgrounds, but nothing unusual or outstanding and later throw in villains that may be interesting, if You will later develop them.

(on this stage we should have viewers interested in the anime)

Make the rule of first confrontation present, that way up to 13th. ep. main villain is met and his goals are explained. Thus everyone thinks pacing is fast and story doesn't drag with unnecessary fillers.

(on this stage viewers should start hoping for good character development, and few things should already be hinted, like couples and enemies and rivals)

Later add in some sentimental and grievous matter, like terrible past of one's mother/sister/other and reveal terrible truth regarding inner beast in main hero and/or main villain. Mix it all with possible relation between main hero and main villain and some gruesome death being possible for one or both, hanging over whole thing like Damocles's sword. AND...

(now viewers should be caring for the characters, and we can begin the most important stage)

DESTROY IT ALL WITH MEANINGLESS, UTTERLY REPETITIVE, FORMULAIC AND HACKNEYED PLOT-PUSHING.

Hey average Japanese anime maker! DIE.

Read More, if You want to know why I think FoR is definitely made by recipe described above.

PS. I am 45th reviewer, well well well. :P

Flame of Recca is indeed a very enjoying series, at a total of 42 episodes its not too long and not too short. Its a series with one straight story line, recca who inherits the power to control flames has to battle his way through numerous enimies to save his hime. The action scenes are great, alot of fighting which is the main basis of this anime. If you like anime with a decent storyline that you can enjoy and a fair amount of action then this is for you. Or if you have enjoyed anime serieses such as X TV, Hunter X Hunter, Kenshin or Naruto then you will probably enjoy this series as well.

I watched the fansub version of Flame of Recca and found the translations to be abhorring, because there were common spelling mistakes and many times when names were not given capital letters at all!

But disregarding the fansubbing, I thought that this anime was not too enjoyable. The storyline was very common and repetitive, and the characters were pretty two-dimensional and once their outlooks and points of view were established, they never seemed to yield their emotions depending on the circumstances.

In Flame of Recca, it is easy to find out that you prefer the 'bad guys' way more than the 'good guys'. Recca and his gang of friends are all pretty much just a typical group of fighter pals and are very uninteresting. Actually, they started off only as students but suddenly became wielders of elemental weapons which is just...okay... And Yanagi keeps on getting in people's ways, and though she knows it, she doesn't seem to have any initiative to do anything about it. An annoying set of characters is a great drawback to this anime.

Flame of Recca is rather boring to begin with, and it doesn't get any better. The animation quality definitely does not show signs of improvements and even the voice-acting is bad for certain characters i.e. Recca who has a loud and annoying voice. There aren't any memorable songs in Flame of Recca and the sound quality itself is below par.

I was surprised I made it to the end of the series, but I regretted watching it because the ending was extremely sudden, rushed and lame. Rewatch value? For me, it is not worth rewatching at all.

Animation is nicely done on each episode. No "sloppy" drawings on fight scenes making the fights cool as hell. Considering its made it the 1990's i had to rate it a 10.

Sound effects were cool. The sword slashing, wind blowing, water dripping, very detailed and matching as well. I didn't like the ending themes much because it doesn't match the fighting theme of the story and also the songs are tat great.

Story and characters are great. To me the fighting was better than the story. Why the fighting was cool? cause there are tons of characters with UNIQUE techniques and side stories dealing with them. Each episode is entertaining.

I felt that the creaters could of added couple of fillers in the end but still good.

Overall i liked this anime. If your looking for a COOL fight/magic anime this is cool.

This is the first time my ratings do not reflect my true feelings for this anime. I just can't seem to give it a higher point.. nor does it deserve so.. pretty confusing eh!! This anime can be summed up in one word: brainless!!

This is THE most mindless action series I have ever seen. Which is why I relaxed and enjoyed it somewhat. The characters are shallow, the story is a mere excuse to see the characters fight each other with superpowers. As an action anime fan even I would like some depth but there is none in this anime. Worst of all there was some potential to the story however it is never realized. We are treated with 5-6 long episode fights. It's so terribly generic it is not even funny. Guy fights the good fight almost looses in the end, guy figures out to beat the enemy at the nick of time in the process also learns a new move. This keeps on repeating itself in the anime till it "ends". Oh by the way there is no ending. No closure at all. While I am sitting on my couch like an idiot wondering why did I even bother finishing this.

From the sound of it the anime sounds terrible.. yet there IS a charm to its simple storytelling. Its quite relaxing to see characters bashing each other. Or maybe this is justifying myself over why I put up with it.

In the end watch if you have absolutely nothing else to do and wouldn't mind an anime with nothing but fights. However if you like these kind of series Scryed is a much better one.

Quite an interesting story that unfolds to the very last ep. I started watching this because I never seen it before and knew it was semi-popular and know I know why. After watching a few eps I couldn't seem to stop. The story/battles/characters were so interesting that I had to know what the next ep held for them. Highly RECCAmended! :)

Wow after the first episode I really was going to stop watching because the animation was so below expectations. But I guess I'm glad I did.. the series wasn't too bad.

I thought it had a semi-engaging plot at certain points, and it was overall pretty entertaining... But it had a lot more potential which it failed to live up to, which I'm pretty disappointed about.

Some of my complaints would have to be that there were characters that weren't as developed as they could have been, there was no ending (it was completely rushed at the end) or resolution, the music was not all that nice on the ears, the animation was sloppy at times, etc.

Don't get me wrong though, I don't think the series is a total failure. I think a better job could have been done though.

I watched this anime a long time ago and I remembered I found it to be very enjoyable throughout. I remember clearly that I enjoyed the fights as well as Recca's energetic and "lets move forward" nature

However, I have no intention of ever watching this again, the story wasn't a bit interesting and was very undeveloped. I agree with someone else that it is similar to Yu Yu Hakusho in terms of the Dark Tournament saga. Just a lot of fighting and flamboyant energetic characters.

I also remembered it was very repetitive and that there wasnt a real ending.

I had a fun time watching this a long time ago. Although the characters were too typical during the time, it has a reasonably amusing story and concept that made it fairly memorable as a shounen. The animation and music were somewhere around average, nothing really spectacular. And most of the weapons from the story were really clever. I’m guessing my only take was that in the anime it happened to be a little shorter than the manga version, which was very unfortunate because it gets really interesting later on as it progresses.

This is a lot diffrent anime, it reminds me most of Yu Yu Hakusho, those who watch both will get what I mean. Anyway this anime is really rather good but it does have a good amount of flaws.

The animation is nice, not the best I've seen but its not at all bad. Only problem I had with it was that at times it did seem to change its style competely leaving me to question what happened with that?

The background music is nothing special but it is above adverage, the OP/ED/ED2 is really good and has some nice music that I think fits the series.

Story this is where the anime could have done so much better. The story is simple enough, boy with the power of flame (fire) is a ninja (or atleast is oppessed with them) and he wants to protect his Hime (Princess) His friends all end up getting powers like him and they battle against a group trying to kidnap Recca's Hime. Its a good story overall but not at all new and as I said easy to compair it to something such as Yu Yu Hakusho (however Recca doesn't turn into a goes and become a ghost detective or anything like that)

The characters have all been used before, nothing new here. All the characters that fight develop rather well, mainly Recca but hes the hero so of course he will. They add some characters that are rather interesting and well done and it helps. However the main flaw is the overall development of the characters, mainly between Recca and his Hime, They don't tell much about her, or her power and its rather disapointing that they don't really develop a relationship even with how ovious it is that they love each other. The other characters don't have relationships with anyone else, I know its an action anime but do they have to make the love between so ovious and NOT work on it? Meh just my personal rant.

I enjoyed watching this anime, it does have its flaws and really leaves you wanting for a lot more, but its a good action anime and a nice watch. I just wish that they would have done something better with the characters relationships with each other...

The thing that really annoys me about this anime is the fact that most of the probelms with the characters arn't solved, Revenge is left undone, the hope of one women is left unfinished, we don't know if someone really did die or not, we never see Recca fight one last time with his Rival, ect. If they had done those this anime would have been so much better...

<3 Recca's hime shes so hot O_O

This eview is going to be like all the others
The story on ths anime is kinde thin, yes., but still it doesn't suck, I think.
The animation is good, though at some part of the serie it almost seems as if they have changed the artist or something like that, cause the style slightly changes.

The characters are simple as well as the story.

However I watched this anime because of the fights the the cool weapons, so I liked it.

But I have to say that the manga is by far MUCH better.

As an endline: Don't watch it if you want deep meaning and complikated story, watch it if you like to se strange weapons being used in cool fights :)

Flame of Recca is crap. I haven't seen too many action anime. The only anime I've seen that I can compare it to is Hunter X Hunter, and HxH is almost infinitely better in every way. But I admit, I enjoyed Flame of Recca quite a bit. It's not hard to make an action series enjoyable. All you really need to make an action series enjoyable is a set of characters and some sort of conflicts.

The story behind Flame of Recca is simple enough. It almost feels like the story is just an excuse for fights. Almost I said. The story IS somehwat coherent. But I didn't watch Flame of Recca expecting deeply insightful or philosophical ideas. I watched it for some good fights and likable characters. I didn't quite get what I wanted, but I enjoyed it anyhow.

For an action series, you'd expect the action scenes to be the focus. While FoR is very well animated sometimes (mainly the early episodes), the rest of the time the visuals look like turd. Perhaps they went over-budget?

That aside, there are many many idiotic and annoying things wrong with FoR and
I'll list all the things that prevented me from giving FoR a higher score:
-Whenever a main character gets hurt, the other main characters start to call that person's name and this happens approximately 500000000 times per episode
-in addition to the above, they just stand there like an idiot and don't help. In the tournament this made sense but before the tournament this seemed stupid.
-The tournament arena is about the size of 4 football fields and yet people can hear people talking from all the way across. Trust me, people can't yell/talk/whisper that friggin loud.
-The villains are moronic...I don't even know where to start
-The heros have mastered the ancient art of "I've got spirit, you can't kill me no matter what. But I can kill you in a few hits as long as I'm mad" technique
-Fuuko isn't a character, she's just a pair of breasts
-The heros always master some secret hidden technique at the last minute, thus predictability ensues
-horrible translation. Most likely #AnimeUnion ripped some HK DVDs. If I were them, I wouldn't have proudly attached the group's name on it. Bad timing, glaringly wrong translation, text spacing...all flawed
-uninteresting and generic chracters.
-kurenai's wailing voice is too annoying
-stupid commentary during fights by characters who happened to be watching

I said the characters are generic and it's true. I can sum each of them up in one sentence. Here I go. Fuuko exists for fanservice. Recca is the generic arrogant male lead who never gives up. Domon is the obligatory "brute" in an action series. Mikagami is your usually cold hearted pretty boy. Kage Houshi exist almost solely to comment on elemental weapons. Koganei is your average brat. Yanagi is your usual innocent girl. Could these characters get more generic? The only slightly interesting character was kurei

There are more...many more flaws that I found but I think it'll take 5 mbs of text space to list them all.

In case you were wondering about the audio in FoR, I can tell you that they are alright. Nothng spectacular. (6 is my average score)

To summarize, this show fails on many levels. But hey, it's an action series. You don't need an Evangelion level depth of story. I found enjoyment in finding out how the story unfolded. Finding out what elemental weapon(s) the enemy is using is interesting and this was the only motivating factor for me to watch. Some of these elemental weapons are truly cool and imaginative.

Despite the low score, I still recommend this series. Just turn off your brain and you'll enjoy it quite a bit.

First of all I would like to say that I haven't watched Yu Yu Hakusho, thus I do now know how FoR compares to it, 'cuz many reviewers say it's a YYH clone.

Flame Of Recca is one of the few Martial Arts Anime that are worth watching (IMHO)
It starts of nicely with introduction to the characters. It takes a few episodes for the show to get going, but when going, it got me hooked.
The show is 42 eps long, which is kinda long in comparisment with 26 and 13 eps serie's. In my opinion, the lenght of the serie didn't stretch the Anime, in fact, I feel like some important parts have been left out.
In those 42 episodes, it tells the story of Recca and his friends who compete at this huge tournament with Killer fighters from all over the world, all in possesion of weapons capable of mass destruction. (Elemental Weapons) Plot doesn't sound too deep, eh? Well, You don't watch FoR for the plot (although it has it's moments) Flame Of Recca really stands out in the fighting scenes. They are very nicely done, and battles do not take numerous episodes to end. only thing that bothered me, is the lack of detail in fights, like Recca gets slashed all over, and the one moment he's covered in blood, and the other moment he's fine.
Because FoR is a Pure Action/Fighting Anime, the characters are all predictable. We've got all the standard characters; The Tomboy, The Big strong Guy, the lone wolf, the radical, the cool evil guy, you name em! But.. While the charcters are predictable, they are also very loveable.
BGM mainly consist of a few themes that are played in fights, which add another factor to the tension of the fights, the OP/END aren't special, but catchy nontheless.
Overall, FoR is a great Martial Arts anime, with great fighting scenes. The action fan WILL enjoy this.
