| From time to time (ie – when I need something to watch), I will check out the AnimeNfo Top 200 to see what people like. It turns out that people like Fruits Basket, so I gave it a look. Suffice it to say, I don't like it much, but each to their own.
This review will be fairly vague, both to avoid spoilers and also because I don't remember much of it, though I suppose not remembering much of it does say something about it, namely that it isn't terribly interesting/memorable.

| Wow, I really liked this anime, didn't I?
I just feel that every aspect in it was perfect, the only reason that I gave it a nine rather than a ten was because I felt that the anime could have gone way further into the manga, and also the last few episodes varied somewhat from the manga, unlike the rest of the series.
(I mean come on, Kyo needed her, in the manga Tohru was there in a heatbeat she didn't need Saki Hanajima to convince her..>_>")

| This anime was really different. It's about how a nice person can influenciate on other people's personalities for good, by taking the best part of them without proposing it.
Tohru is a teenager who has lost her mother, so she decides to live alone in a forest becuse she doesn't want to bother anyone. But she meets some members of Sohma family...she was a school partner with one of the members. She is invited to stay in the house for a time period.
But the girl is really special. She always wants to hear other people's problems and tries to make persons around her to be happy. So Tohru chapter after chapter, wins the simpathy of the other members of the family, even external members (people who live in the Main House Family), who are supposedly more difficult to communicate with.
Fruits basket is a really human, heart touching series, very beautiful and original in its style. also, it teaches us to accept people the way the are, because the differences between the members made the family more interesting.
But when it came to comedy, I didn't like it. Although comedy parts were necessary to make fruits basket a not so serious and reflexioning program, I never cared about childish fights, animals transformations, girls planning to conquer a boy, and silly things like that. But I liked Uo and Hana (best friends of Tohru)...their voices were so deep, and their way of dressing, move and act were so misterious...very interesting and funny girls. Tohru also was lucky to have the strong and terrorific girls as her friends...otherwise she looked so weak and well intentioned, that maybe without these two girls, she would have been bulled by her scholar partners. I also would have liked to know about Tohru's mother...I think she was really cute to have Hana and Uo as her followers.

| This anime is clearly intended for women: lots of "hot" and "beautiful" male characters (including a requisite ambiguously-gay character) who all have lots of women falling at their feet, yet seem to only be interested in the average school-girl main character (every girl`s dream, right? all the hot guys in school hanging out with you?); this anime is like a "harem" anime for women.
The premise behind the story is fairly original: a bunch of people (including Yuki, Kyo, and Shigure)who are cursed to turn into animals when touched by the opposite sex run into a young girl, Tohru, without a place to live and offer her a place to stay.
The majority of the story consists of meeting and developing the characters of the many member of this bunch of cursed people, the Sohma family. There really isn`t too much plot to this anime: most of the plot revolves around characters dealing with past issues(many times issues with other characters), with the aid of Tohru`s kindness. The ending was pretty predictable, yet still a bit convoluted.
These characters are usually well-developed, multi-dimensional, and unique. Their personalities are affected and resemble their respective zodiac animals (though sometimes not), such as Kyo`s ever-burning resentment for being the animal left out of the zodiac, the cat, and Momiji`s hyperness.
Each of them has a tragic past or an obstacle to overcome, and each is able to overcome it, usually with the help of Tohru. Tohru herself is extraordinarily kind; she likes everybody and everybody likes her in the series. Even Tohru herself has a tragic past (her mother dies just before the series, she never knew her father, and at the beggining of the series she is living in a tent in the woods), though you wouldn`t know it based on how she acts during the series (the trips to her mother`s grave are more like she is talking to her on the phone than visiting her dead body)
However, although I can appreciate the development of these characters, I can`t say that I enjoyed watching the development. Every character had a tragic past that they needed to overcome, and I just got tired of watching the same sequence of events (character is reminded of bad event, Tohru drags event out of them, Tohru heals their soul through her kindness). Also, I didn`t enjoy the "harem"esque quality of this anime: there is as much fan service in this anime as in any of the worst anime meant for teenage-boys. (ambiguously gay men, pretty boys, most of the boys love the main character, lots of awkwardness between the girl and the guys, the hot guys fight over the girl, massive amounts of "cuteness", especially in the transformations to their zodiac forms, and cross-dressing of the pretty male characters)
The animation in this anime is nothing special: it is entirely average in all respects. The characters are not drawn particularly well, there are no special effects to speak of (transformations are either not shown or happen with just a puff of colored smoke or flash of light).
The soundtrack is also nothing to write home about: the opening is pretty bad, and while the ending is decent, it isn`t great. There isn`t much of a soundtrack during the anime, and if there is it wasn`t noticeable. As to the character`s voices- most were incredibly annoying (I don`t know if it was by design, but I couldn`t stand the voices of half of the characters), but the voice actors did a decent job.
From a purely technical standpoint, this anime isn`t too bad. However, I was incredibly bored every minute I was watching it. It is a struggle for me to finish most of these episodes. And as I said, though the characters are technically sound, I did not really find them interesting or enjoy their interaction. The ending wasn`t particularly interesting either.

| When my cousin told me that this was for girls, she wasn't kidding. This is definitely shoujo and you'd better be prepared for sparkly stars and such spontaneously appearing around characters.
There are definitely some interesting relationships that develop around the magical and mysterious Sohmas as well as some good humor but if you want a plot-driven anime, look elsewhere.

| Animation: the animation was not an exelent one graphic-wise and detail, but it was very clost to it. Combining with an extremely goofy plot, it injected the deadly dose of humor. Therefore, I can not help it but to lean toward perfect animation score.
Sound: sound was good but nothing of extraordinarity. On the other hand it perfectly suited this type of anime.
Story: there was a serious plot behind the story, but at the same time the anime was very entertaining. All kinds of emotions could be felt in this anime: pain, joy, loneliness, jalousy, fear and friendship. There were some irrational based ideas/concepts in the anime's final episodes, but there were a minor flaws that did not interupt any of the story flow or the enjoynment.
Character: characters were depicted well. Everyone with the different motives, agendas and dark secrets, but at the same time good suited for the comedy. I missed the main character's (sorry forgot her name) a darker side though. I will give it a high 9.
Value: I'd really love to re-watch this anime. Because it was very funny. If anyone reading this is a fan of comedy, then you should watch this anime.
Enjoyment: surely I enjoyed this anime a lot, because every episode was original, and extremally funny. With every single episode I just could not stop but laugh and replay it once more.X]

| May God! I was hooked by a review I got from a "z-store" magazine, "You'll laugh, you'll cry, you say did that boy just turn into a cat!"
This Anime I believe is one of the greatest ever, and it makes me sad there wasn't a season 2, considering I had to start buying all the manga because I loved the anime SO much.
This anime is a "Must See" for anyone of the "Comedy" "Romance" type.
The Characters grow on you as you watch the show, and you will begin to see yourself not being able to put the dvds away after you watched all 26 episodes.
If there is ever an anime I would personally suggest to anyone who loves animes regardless, I Strongly suggest!

| Yep, as a girl I truly love this. I haven't seen too much anime series but Fruits Basket I've watched at least 5 times and need to say, it is the best of all I've seen. It is like drug for me, I think it is made for me. I am inspired and refreshened because of it. Maybe needless to say but I am romantic and escapist person. I didn't have any prejudice towards this when I saw it at the first time (4 years ago) so I think it was easy to surprise the loveliness of it.
I quickly identified with Tohru and wanted to live her present life, wanted to have a huge change to my life and get to know new people. Of course I wanted to find someone to care about and dremt about teenage heart-throbs etc :P I like Yuki Sohma character, his charm, coolness and mystic.. the opposite Kyo gives an excellent spice and speed to the show. Surely there is one kind of nature to every girl's taste. And I love the animation, drawing style, it looks so carefully made and of course typical shoujo flowers and cute colours impressed too. Need to note that I have always hated harem series where there are one nerd boy and ten big boobed girls teasing and playing around him :P (though nothing against nerd boys) so I fell in love with Fruits Basket because the situation is ment for a girl, for me.

| I tried avoiding watching Fruits Basket for a long time, only because I saw the manga series, which seemed to revolve around multiple girls and guys. I worried that it would the kind of series that would stray from the main (usually non-existent) storyline, and jump around from character to character, like Kare Kane His and Her Circumstances. However, I think the anime is a bit different from the manga, due to the fact that they do attempt to wrap things up before they start to stray too much, and yet still following the author's wishes concerning plot and storyline.
I have to admit, at several moments, the scenes get a bit too cheesy, especially with the theme of a main character who always "wants everyone to be happy." But a lot of times, what saves this anime is the sudden comedic surprises, carried out very well through the random art and animation.
I honestly don't think Fruits Basket was meant to be too deep in meaning (at least not the anime series). For me, the main highlight was the laugh-out-loud moments. The main plot was there to help carry this idea out, keeping it from getting too pointless. I would have to classify Fruits Basket as having a more of a "crazy" funny theme, a lot like Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu (in a less violent way)...
As far as the actual storyline goes, you do get amused by the fact that a household of [mostly] guys end up turning into animals the moment a female hugs them...I know, this idea alone is already cheesy from the start. However there are more serious moments that might get you later on (scraps in the middle and mostly at the end)...
This series is truly random. As I said, not too terribly deep, but I do think you might be missing out on something if you decide not to watch it.

| It may not look like much from the cover/synopsis after finding this anime to have such a high rating, but once you dive into it, it can be an engaging series with a fine mixture of comedy and drama. For one, to me, the synopsis seemed pretty boring, and unfortunately I don't think there's a better way to sum it up, so I ask that, as a reviewer, you take a look into this anime and see if it's right up your alley, because even though it's slightly off-center for me, I sure know it's a fine piece of work.
Let's start with what makes this anime so good: the characters. Honda Tohru is one of the few greatest female leads ever in an anime, and her charming sense of positivity just never lets up even for a single frame, even until the very end. With a mother lost to an accident and forced out of her home due to unwanted disturbance during renovations, she found her way into the Sohma family, and thus her wacky adventures begin! Going to school, janitoring for a job, and doing most of the housework for the Sohma's is just the few things that she does out of her good will. I will caution, however, that SOME people might find her too goody-two-shoes or whatever. If you don't like those kinds of characters, I don't recommend this :P. The rest of the characters make a strong family and cast: the rivalry between the rat (Yuki) and cat (Kyo) provides great laughs and dynamic angles; Shigure as the ever hard-working novelist (hehe); Uohana and other students from the school, etc.. As for the main antagonist Akito, it's very easy to hate him, but it's all the reason to watch until the very end!
Slapstick comedy is very prevalent, but the several crazy characters bring certain types to an entirely new level. The dynamic between Yuki and Kyo is always fun to watch; Yuki's brother's lifestyle choices isn't as slithery as it seems; "I'M SO SORRY PLEASE FORGIVE ME OH UNIVERSE!" is probably the best out of the bunch for being so over the top! As for the drama, some parts could be better, and the ending made me cry (it's hard for an anime to make me cry... or maybe I've been watching crap lately...).
Most of the episodes are episodic. There's no real over-plot - just a lot of Sohma exploration and expeditions to uncover the truths of the family, and it usually gets very repetitive. Most focus on a character or two, each truth being revealed and built up upon each new episode. Some episodes feature non-Sohma's, usually on their quest to get Yuki's attention... but nonetheless Fruits Basket is mostly character drama. You might get bored if you try this in one sitting - I recommend at least an episode at a time. The last three episodes should be watched in a row, though. (Just a note: I didn't actually LIKE the last three episodes because of that ONE cliche element, but it still works out pretty well.)
I don't know if there's any more to say that can convince you to look past the synopsis, and for those who have already watched it, know that you have watched a good anime deserving of it's popularity and score. Join in on the game and try not to get left out!

| The holy man of old tell us to eradicate our ego, to strife for humility, to be selfless, turn the other cheek, and all that other good stuff. Of course none of us does that because that would be insane. People would regard us with suspicion, think us weak, having character flaws that only stand in the way of self fullfillment. Enter Toru Honda. Like the hermits of old she lives in the woods. But instead of a bearded wisened old man, Toru Honda is a little girl trying hard to make her way thru school. Nevertheless Toru Honda pretty much has the character of the Buddha (or close enough). What makes this series so magical is that Toru remains totally selfless, utterly humble, honest and disarmingly sweet no matter what circumstances she has to face. The Series carries this off without getting corny. Fruit Basket is all about the Story and the Character of Toru Honda. The Soma's are also very well done. While the Animation and Sound did not blow my mind they work fine for Fruit Basket. Bottom Line. I did not just enjoy Fruit Basket I loved it. I've seen it twice already and certainly will again. One of the all time greats.

| Reviewing Fruits Basket is a bit of a strange case, because objectively it should be a pretty average show. It's a sort-of reverse harem show, with okay animation, a one-note heroine, and a repetitive plot that sort of tails off without a proper ending. But some people love Fruits Basket. I mean, really LOVE it. And I confess I'm one of them. (The above negative description was really painful for me to write!)
I guess the most important thing is that I can really identify with most of the characters. This show is about people with problems they feel trapped by, and how Tohru, by being utterly selfless and loving, helps the people around her to feel better about themselves. That may sound sappy, but it's done with complete conviction, and it works.
Character designs are based on the manga, and are simple and stylish. There is a high bishounen component to this show, and some light shonen-ai. The backgrounds are appealing, in a pure, light style that looks a little like watercolour painting. Animation is quite good, and I liked the "eye-catches".
Sound is fine - I liked the clapstick sound used for the eye-catches. The OP/ED themes are beautiful.
The acting (sub) is great - especially Tohru. If you get the official release, you'll also get some nice extras including conversations with the Japanese cast, and a collection of eye-catches with commentary from the lead actress.
As I said above, there are some story weaknesses. The "Tohru meets another family member, discovers their problem, abases herself and gives them a personal revelation" plot gets predictable, which isn't so bad if you enjoy it in the first place. The story arc doesn't completely conclude, as several issues aren't resolved, and we still haven't met all the zodiac characters.
A lot of people have called for a sequel, but unfortunately that looks doubtful, as several story elements were changed for the anime, making continuation difficult. That's a shame, because there's no pleasure like watching Fruits Basket (with maybe just a little alcohol for company, adult viewers), and getting all smiley/weepy at the heart-touching moments.

| Fruits Basket is a romantic-comedy about a slightly naive, but good natured young woman named Toru Honda. She stumbles into a family with an ancient secrete, the Soma's.
This is an entertaining anime that, though cute, is well enough written to keep the average anime viewer satisfied.

| I really enjoyed this anime. It was exactly what I was looking for: funny with quirky characters, unique plot, lovable characters, and many heartfelt messages to the viewers. The story follows Tohru Honda, a girl with inspiring determination, who gives all of herself without asking for anything in return. She randomly happens upon the Sohma family when she decides to live on her own in a tent in the forest near their house. During her first day living with the Sohma's, she discovers their family secret, which outsiders are forbidden from knowing.
Character:
Tohru is a very inspiring and admirable character. Gradually as the show progresses, other Sohma family members are exposed to her kind heart and healing words. Tohru finds a real family with the Sohmas. Some of the episodes hold positive messages, telling viewers to be themselves, be confident in who you are, etc.
Aside from the protagonist, I love pretty much all the other characters (although Kyo is my favourite!). The Sohma family members are all very different and have unique substories to add to the main plot.
Animation:
The animation of "Fruits Basket" is satisfactory and nothing more in my opinion. Often, the characters will be poorly drawn and the scenes will look like quick sketches.
Sound:
I saw the English dubbed version and I am happy to report that I actually liked the characters voices. Also, the opening song was rather dull and uninspiring, but the ending song was half decent.

| This anime is about Tohru who comes upon a house in the woods which is the home of the Sohma family - a mysterious family that when members of opposite sex embrace them they turn into animals of the Chinese zodiac. This sounds cheesy in a sense but as the story progresses it conveys a variety of emotions that you wouldn't expect to feel upon first watching the show. It plays the part of a comedy, romance and drama all in one... but it falls short of being great imo.
Don't get me wrong I like this anime, but I feel "good" is a sufficient word to use in describing this show. I was dissapointed maybe because I had such high hopes for this show since it is rated so high everwhere I look.
I felt although the concept of the characters becoming animals when embraced was intriguing and different it became a little old after a while. However I am sure many will probably enjoy this anime a lot more that I did, even though I really liked it. It has its cutesy moments, it has its romance moments and it has its dramatic moments... it has the whole deal sowed into one little package. The only problem I have as a whole with this show is how the anime is “delivered” it just felt like something critical was missing that kept me from connecting to the show in a stronger manner (in a manner the show was trying to achieve). Overall I enjoyed this anime and would probably watch it again sometime down the line, it was fun however not as engrossing as I would have liked.

| Fruits Basket was one of the first animes, I had ever watched. The reason I'm reviewing it now is because I just watched some episodes of Fruits Basket again and it makes me want to review it.
Everything is drawn great for an anime that came out in 2002, but sometimes the character's eyes are too large. (That kinda annoys me) The backgrounds are pretty simple and clean.
The OP and ED fit the cute anime, but the background music was repetitive and kinda plain. It fits the mood of the anime, but can't they use different music at least for one time. The voice actors did a pretty good job. (Even though Yuki sounds like a girl)
The story is simple, but still good. The plot has some really sad parts in it. That made me cry.
This is what the story is about. A girl named Tohru lost her mother in a car accident. With no money or family relatives, she decides to live on her own. Then she finds a house in the woods, the people living there are Yuki, Kyo, and Shigure. As the story goes on Tohru will make new friends and solve some family troubles. (Like the chinese zodiac curse)
The ending of the anime felt a bit rushed, but at least ties everything up at the end.
The characters are the best part of this anime. Even the side character have a deep and dark past. But since there are so many characters. I'm only gonna describe the three main ones.
Tohru - The female lead character. A bit too nice and cheerful, but that makes what people like her. She helps all the main characters get over their troubles.
Yuki - The popular boy at school. He is friends with Tohru. There is even a Yuki fan club running around the school. He has a deep and dark past.
Kyo - The quick tempered boy who always jumps to conclusions. He also has a deep and dark past as well.
All the characters look pretty good, except for the big eyes and small bodies. All the characters do change and they do change alot, thanks to Tohru.
I don't know if you'll watch this anime again, but I certainly did. This anime is worth a keeper, but some people won't like cheerful animes or slow moving plots. I enjoyed Fruits Basket and I hope you'll watch it someday.

| Tohru Honda is very very happy, look-on-the-bright side sort of girl. Her goodiness can sometimes be overpowering but it goes with her cuteness to approaching everyday life. But this anime is again a sweet exterior with a deep inside to dig into; and its millions of fans worldwide cant be wrong.

| The reason I watched Fruits Basket was that it is Top 200. I was depressed and keep myself why I am watching this anime till first 16th or 16th episode. Story development is such long.
Story and people are wery well related with zodiac and the zodiac animals made analogy with characters' attributes sometimes.
Dram is the most remarkable part of Fruits Basket, giving the message that why people must be responsible for things that they haven't caused. Honda Tohru keeps accepting how people they are without hesitation.
Intro, Ending and mid-episode musics are bit best; Good music are choosen according to scene.
Characters are widely seperated, Fruits basket introduces many characters from zodiac as well it gives some details Tohru's friends and Yuki fan club membes.
I only enjoyed last 10 episodes.

| This is the only anime to move me to the point of tears, laughter and humility so many times, its certainly an emotional rollercoaster! Tohru gradually touches each of the Soma family's hearts... and it touched mine too.. TEN OUTTA TEN!!!
