This anime is so boring, and so slow and so predictable. Not sure about why it takes so long to progress along the storyline, and when it finally did, you know what the plot is anyway. Another thing with this anime, you are not sure what kind of anime it wants to be, mecha, action, harem?

Wierd...so confusing and so out of place..Its just plain wierd..
The graphics and the drawings are really awesome, the girls are cute, the guys are..there, its all good. But the story is just...what?!? For starters it's in my opinion not a good story..just dont like the plot. But the way they convey the story is jus wierd. Its like this massive chunk of it was there but they wanted to make it a 13ep series so they cut that big chunk out and ate it.
The characters were not bad. They all had their own unique personas but not any of them were really expressed or..described.
The start/middle of the series you may just be confused but the ending is just WTF...
Main points : Wtf? Confused. Disappointed.

Jinki Extend is certainly one weird mech anime to watch and hard for me to enjoy. The first half of the story does nothing to move or even develop the main story at all. Secondly, its style of quickly and abrubtly changing scenes makes me hard to follow the plot or characters at all. So I can't even get a feel on the characters.

The 2 things I don't like in the animation is the mech designs are all to clumsy and not streamlined at all. It's quite hard for me to think that man made mecha are this fat and clunky. Secondly, while I don't mind having all female pilots, their designs always made me think that they do not have the physique to control one. Have you ever see a loli being able to control a F18 Hornet? I don't think so.

Sound is okay, I like the ending sound, but the opening song is quite weak. Also, at times, it's hard for me to distinguish who's who when all the female cast speaks at the same time.

The story is one major let down. While I do applaud the producers in trying something new to present the story, in the end, it just turns out to be one big editing mess. Scenes came up from nowhere and then gone to a totally different action the next minute. Time seems to shift from forward to back and then forward again. The presentation here is just hard for the viewers to follow, this makes it extra hard there cause of the complicated character interactions.

The anime should focus more on a few characters rather than a whole bunch. I still don't have a "feel" to any of the character at the end of the series. Who's leading the anime, who got developed and why do they act that way? These are all the questions that the writers should address more clearly in it.

This is one frustrating anime to watch. Not only does it not have a clear plot, the character interaction are hampered by poor scene changes, which make this series not that much enjoyable.

Jinki:Extend is an Mecha anime from 2005. It's caused some contraversey in the anime community for having shall we say, a less than coeherent plot. I personally didn't have much trouble figuring out what was going on with the story, but I had read some of the manga this anime was based on. The main problem with this anime is that it's a thinking anime with not much to think abbout. There have been plenty of animes with confusing, what-the-heck is going on plots, but most of those animes dealt with deep social and philosophical issues. Jinki has no deeper meaning, so most will be less inclined to try to piece together what's going on. The animation is rather well done as our the character designs. The mech designs are sort of meh, but they seem to play backseat to the human characters a lot of the time. Some of the characters in the anime, like Aoba, are really fleshed out. Others just seem sort of there. The manga was far better in character development simply because it had more time to do. And of course, there's plenty of fanservice. If you liked the manga, you'll probably enjoy seeing the characters animated. If you love challenging anime, you're likely to have fun disecting the plot (which isn't as hard to comprehend as some would lead you to believe). If you like cute girls piloting big robots, this show has plenty of them. I would not reccomend Jinki to hardcore mecha fans mainly because there isn't enough action to keep most of them entertained. I would also not reccomend it to anime fans with short attention spans due to the complexity of the story. Either way, Jinki:Extend seems to have people's opinion's all over the map. Some people love it, some people hate it while others are somewhere in between. The only real wy to find out is to watch it. I personally like this show

Jinki Extend is a basic mech. anime. It has a highly confusing story that cycles between past and present without any warning. Some of the mechs such as Moribito 2, look really crappy. However despite its flaws I enjoyed this short anime. If you want to know more read on.

Jinki:Extend is a cliched female piloting mecha series that tries to add a twist by constantly jumping between two different timelines of the same plot at least once every episode and eventally showing how these two come together.

J:E would be a better series to watch if wasn't for this technique or if it was actually pulled off well. Instead of what would have been an ok plot that flows normally with a few unanswer questions turns out to be confusing for unnesscary reasons for a majority of viewing time and when you do actually find out the motive of the main villian you will feel as if all that time jumping was just a waste and you're STILL left with unanswered questions.

Even with all I'm still curious how the follow-up OVA will be as the final episode (12) ended a little abruptly.

WTF. Nice combination of three letters perfectly explaining my feelings of Jinki:Extend. First the series seemed a bit of a cliched mecha series with your extra-ordinaly talented pilot who has to overcome intesive training and a crumby veteran co-pilot. Shortly after I was messed up with a weird storyline that had two sets of characters and happenings to follow. I was baffled. Then the situation was explained but too late as I was already lost any interest on whatever it was that was happening. Except there was a guy named J. Kaan or something. What a cool name.

How I see Jinki's problem that it tries to compress a complex plot in 12 episodes and pretend it's just an artistic choice. "No, this plot isn't full of holes and jumps because we were forced to cut most of the story away. It's because we want you to puzzle out the most of it yourself." Jeez, thanks a lot.

New characters are introduced at a furious pace so that there is no time to develop to old ones. They throw flashbacks at you to explain their motives and history but for me it felt like I was being steamrolled with information. I see many potential good characters but they are delt with such hurry that no affection is born. Story holds together with bubblegum. There was many things I wanted to know more about of the Jinki's and their enemies but again there is too much a rush to introduce new story elements. Like what hell were those animal guys that showed up during the first episodes?

Animation is more or less the best part of the series. Character designs are good and the action is fluid. Only problem is that the Jinki's are as boring as dry wood and their fights follow the same trait. Some funny techniques are introduced but mostly I was yawning during the fights. Music is ok with good opening and ending songs.

Jinki tries a lot and fails most of it. Once again I suppose the manga is a lot better but this series fails even as its promotion finally even killing my interest of learning more about its universe. Confusive and boring I wouldn't recommend Jinki to anyone. But seeing the previous reviews indicate that this is one those love/hate series you might want to check it out just in case. Just don't be surprised if it bores the heck out of you.

All I can say is that the story and plot of this anime is quite messed up, probably since the tried to put the whole 2 manga into just 13 ep (thus making many question still unanswered like the origin of jinki itself), though the first 1-9 ep are still forgivable, the later one are just as much as boring and stereotypical for most mecha anime series.
The op/ed music on the other hand are very good (and a rare one for short lenght - about 13 ep anime) like the op song called "fly away" and the ending song who's performed by angela, they really fits in to the anime.
Overall this anime is only enjoyable by only some hardcore mecha fans, if you're looking either easy watching or good storyline anime it's safe to stay out of it.

one notes about the mecha design : it's somewhat poorly made that even compared to fafner it's still looks odd.

I watched only up to episode 9, after that I stopped watching because I just didn't feel anything for the characters as they kept popping up, or from place to place.
At first glance, it felt much like Gunbuster where a girl must do her best to train to pilot these Jinkis while the enemy's identity isn't so clear.

I really never grasped what was going on. I saw a bunch of shady things happening, but I just didn't seem to care. The overused ideas of "I have to do it", "I don't want to fight because I am afraid of hurting someone else", "Let's fight to protect" came up, and I just lost interest at the seocnd point. I am not heartless, but for a 12 episode series, this theme really is boring and cannot be developed enough.

Story is arguably the weakest part. It isn't an anime's overused themes or static characters that make it bad, but a bad underlying framework that is totally uninteresting. Aliens... monsters.. villains,

Characters aren't deep at all. Aoba is like some otaku's fantasy. A girl who can pilot mecha and loves plastic models and machines. Riu was nothing more than some character to support Aoba's growth. As for Akao... there wasn't enough done with any of these characters in general in this short anime series and what it ends up being is just a frilly decorated mecha anime.

At first I found it interesting, but after watching a couple episodes it got rather confusing. The timelines were all messed up, after changing scenes I never knew if I was watching a flashback or the present. And what the hell was with the characters?! They've got all these lookalikes, you never knew which was which(yes, clones I know now but then I thought it was multiple personalties or an older Aoba). And that villain guy still looks like a teenager after all those years, that's just strange, while the girls do look older(well kinda but still). Besides I don't see why Genta is so desirable, he just looks so oooooold.
I find the driving motive for the main villain rather weak and they never explained the why and how for the other villains. Some of the characters have a dark past, but I found that blonde girl Akao (another minus their names are confusing alike) really annoying. The plot of the story is soso. They don't explain a lot of things, so you just have to work your brains. After watching all 12 episodes, I don't wanna recommend this to anyone unless they know this first: Beware of clones, changing time periods scenes and a never aging villain!

Jinki is a very short series, but to its credit still manages to pull everything together and keep the viewer interested.

Whilst mecha series are anything but rare, I can't recall seeing one as light hearted and enjoyable as this. And I think the character are the reason, as the story is very much character driven.

I'd be interested to know what's happening with the second season? Anyone know?

After I watch a couple of the first ep. it was really confusing. The time line is shaffle and it make you thought many things but will not solve anything.

The story about saving the world that they talking about in the early were never mention at later I guess it will be more focus on how the beat the real bad guy plus saving the world in the season. In this one you get to see all the chars introduces and develop them to be a good fighter. As they introduce people they tell us very little story about how who they are or what happen with them in the past. THIS SERIES ONLY TELL YOU 75% OF THE INFORMATION AND LET YOU THINK OUT THE REST. It's good to use our brain a little but on the other hand you might be dissapoint or you just feel like you missing out the action. Soemtime you thought they already dead but then you never see how they die, DON'T EVER ASSUME DEATH UNTILL YOU SEE THEIR GRAVE. Don't worry about them either, just focus on what they shooting at you and you'll enjoy this series.

The ending is nice so all of you out there that like happy ending can like this series. "to be extended" part make you rest in peace for the next season to explain and end it for good.

KILL THAT PURPLE MASK GUY!!! DIE MOTHER<BEEP>!!!

Ok, just saw the last episode (the 12th)

This is a really good series, up to the end. I do hope that "To Be Extended..." really means that they'll do a second seasson, because there is plenty of room for more in this story. Almost every story-thread was left open in the end, not that it's always bad to do that but I want more!

Animation is good, not outstanding. The storytelling and character building is really great. Using complex jumps in time and often rely on images more than words it's very well use of screentime. Just establishing some of the minor characters would take about 10eps of Naruto ;)

UPDATE - 4/24/05

The ending was brilliant. The show explained everything very well in the end. I recommend everyone to watch this show.

If you like mecha shows like Gundam Seed, watch this light hearted mecha anime show.

----------------------------------------

This is an awesome anime show. Although the animation may not be top notch, its great character designs and storyline makes up for the fact that it's a great anime show. Friendship, romance and mecha are wonderfully put together to form this anime show.

Starting from episode 8, the story gets twisted and a bit confusing. Flashbacks mix with reality make you wonder what's happening and what has happened. This is a great way to keep the audience tuned into the show.

For those are currently watching the show, why are there 2 Aobas and how did she turn evil? I'm very excited to find out the reason she turned evil. Did the incident with Aoba vs Akao happen 3 years ago or the whole show's a flashback? Is there a way for Aoba to come back to the light side?

Definitely recommended!

13 episodes is too little for such a great anime show.

*UPDATE*
Just watched episode 9, it turns out that Evil Aoba and Light Aoba are two different people. This is really strange. I can't wait to find out what's going to happen next. Only 4 episodes remaining. :[

I'm pretty hooked on this series. I think the storyline is pretty standard, if not cliche'd, in terms of the mecha genre. However, the animation is well-done, and the music is decent, although slightly repetitive at times. The characters are rather well-rounded, though somewhat stereotypical (except for Aoba, who I think is pretty cool ^_^).

Update over the last one: Eh, the ending was pretty disappointing. It was admittedly quite stupid, I had to dock story points. Depth and meaning were more or less sacrificed for a cop-out, half-baked happy ending that leaves the de facto rapist villain 100% thriving.

Update: I think the story deserves a much higher rating than I originally gave it. It's slightly confusing (still trying to sort out whether Aoba came before or after ... because at first, the other girl appears on the 'dark side,' but then later they reference Aoba when training the girl on the 'good side' ?? haha, I'll figure it out eventually), but it's much better than I expected. There are enough twists and turns, and an interesting mother-daughter relationship that is perhaps reminiscent of Shinji and his father ...

Opening song is alright; ending song has got some weird voice mutilations in it that still don't sit well with me. The BGM is sometimes a bit too pleasant-sounding for the situation at hand.

This just may be the best anime of this season.

J:E will probably confuse you since there is two storylines going on at once. One about our protagonist Aoba, and the other about this other chick..I forgot her name ^_^;;; They're both Jinki pilots. Supposedly, they will cross eachothers path at one point.

From the episodes so far, J:E fails to disappoint. Beautiful animation, great artstyle, cute girls, and mecha. It's a serious story with some giggles here and there.

I can't wait to finish it and see the ending. Each episode leaves you wanting more.

After watching episodes 1-4 I have come to the conclusion that this is a very good anime. The series has great sound.
Me being a person whom is all about plot, this one has alot of structure to it. If the story develops in these limited episodes, I think this just may take my prize of best short series to date.
