Negima! Magister Negi Magi is a 26 episode harem romantic comedy anime released in 2005, set in a magical fantasy world. Although the anime has some elements of action and interesting storyline twists, it falls short in its execution.

The level of detail in the graphics in Negima is rather simplistic, and the character designs aren't impressive. In later episodes, graphical errors and inconsistencies appear, tarnishing the enjoyment of the anime. However, for most viewers who are not as critical when it comes to the graphics of anime, Negima has an acceptable viewing quality.

The theme songs in Negima feel slightly detached from the main theme of the anime, and the same can be said about the overall soundtrack. There are some tunes in particular which are reused far too frequently, and which arguably deteriorate the quality of the scenes. Voice acting is of good standard however, and even the English cast sound reasonably well. Still, the soundtrack in Negima does not stand out well in any way.

The storyline of Negima starts off in a very typical way for a romantic comedy anime. However, a number of very interesting twists occur halfway through the series, and these twists continue to take place until the very end. Yet despite all this, the anime fails to take full opportunity of these interesting and promising changes, resulting in a general storyline that appears to be overly childish and disappointing in the end.

As a harem anime, Negima does not feature your usual cast of characters. The lead character is a key example, arguably the youngest lead in any harem anime to date. That is not a bad thing by any means, as the remaining characters manage to make this very entertaining and enjoyable to follow. Backed up with impressive voice acting, it is a shame that the character designs do not have the level of detail or consistency that would make the characters truly stand out. Given the enormous size of the cast in the anime, character development is present, but only covers a small fraction of the characters. However, sequels to Negima have been released, which would hopefully further improve in this area.

For fans of the Negima manga, this anime might result in a mixed bag of opinions, as it does not manage to deliver in all areas. Experienced viewers new to the series are likely to be disappointed however, as Negima falls significantly short when compared to more reputable and high profile series. Viewers new to the harem romantic comedy anime genre are likely to enjoy this the most, although I would recommend other shows which offer better viewing quality. Still, the sequels to Negima do appear to have better production quality, and therefore might be worth checking out.

This is one of the few ecchi/harem anime that I thought had a really good story to it! The lead male, Negi, is a much stronger character than most lead males in harems in my opinion. As far as the ecchi content goes, it's average school girl stuff, but a little disturbing since the girls are supposedly in middle school. While the story seems to be a normal telling of Negi's new life as a teacher in an all girls school, they add much more content to it and focus the story on Asuna more in the end. If you are looking for an ecchi/harem/comedy anime mixed with a lot of magic and some action, I STRONGLY recommend this series! (If you don't cry even a little near the end, you're inhumane in my opinion. At least I'll admit I bawled like a little baby.)

This was one of the most disapointing animes I have have ever seen. I love Love Hina and when I heard about this I couldn't wait to watch it! The story sounded interesting and I love the anime style so whats not to like right?... Right...

OK to be fair the animation was really not that bad. It was smoth and I liked the style and enjoyed the bright color palet. The backgrounds were nicely done as well. This was the best part of the anime i felt, it did look good.

The sound was also done fairly well. (except if you use english subs they were awful whe I tried to listen to it LOL ) I felt the title music was nice and fit the series as well as the ending music. The music in the show was forgetable though.

This is easily the most frustrating part of the show. It had so much potential and then left you flat and hanging. Then it went into this typical harem type anime. The problem is it is a harem dealing with a 10 year old teacher. LAME You never really can connect with any of the characters because of it unbelievable story. Character development really doesn't happen except some with Negi. Cool fight scenes? Not really, Plot twists? Nope. This became boring fast.

How do I try and explain this... Well lets be honest there is 26 episodes and about the same amount of characters. True you don't really dive into the life of all the girls (like the fat girl) but still there is way to many characters to have any depth. The desgins of the characters are neat, and even with so many characters you do get a decent grasp on who is who.

I would not pay to see this anime. and that is a shame. For a guy who thinks Love Hina is one of the best things on this planet, this doesn't even compete.

Negima is a strange anime of sorts, its like a Harem except not really, but it is. A male character is a 10 year old teacher/wizard who just happens to help the many many girl students he happesn to be teaching. But of course, there always has to be that special main girl character.

Very stereotypical, nothing daring, very standard. Negima is like a slice of anime which pleases fans, fans of viewers new to anime, fans that wants to see lots of girls in a place with some fanservice thrown into it. Negima does nothing that makes me want to go stand up and cheer, the anime is just plain sucky.

Maybe, just maybe if iim not a hardcore anime watcher, then i might have enjoyed Negima but since watching so many comedies/romance/school stuff, Negima does nothing new. The anime goes out of its way to try to string a plot with the vampire girl, then somethign to do with the president's daughter then something about Asuka who dies *shock* (something daring) who just happens to be alive in the end (oh.. very disappointing) In between all that rubbish, there comes the filler one episode per girl stuff, a pointless mini-story trying to strengthen character development but fails due to lack of screentime for said character.

However, interestingly, the characters are what makes Negima.. well.. Negima, a whole selection of girls is ready for you to pick, you look at Asuna, or Yui etc and say, 'yes, she's my fave', because with so many characters there, there's bound to be good one for you. But as said, lack of screentime/development for the whole class makes almost 75% of the class redundant.

Overall, Negima is a mess, lacks plot, conviction, development or any real substance. Avoid!

3.5/10

Maho Sensei Negima is a story about a 10-year-old magical student named Negi Springfield who is assigned to teach a class of girls at an isolated ancient and private girls' institution in Japan.

This is probably the wierdest and most awkward harem anime I have ever seen. The characters' personalities are pretty much cookie-cutter Love Hina-esque personalities (see other reviews for more in-depth analysis of this; just know that if you have watched "Love Hina" many of the characters' personalities seem based off those of the "Love Hina" characters). One of the problems I have with the whole harem aspect of the anime is the fact that the characters are so young (Negi is 10, the girls are 13-14); however, the anime deals with that hurdle pretty well by not making the harem aspect too serious or perverted (though there are definately some scantily clad 14 year olds who could be mistaken for 21 year olds) and allowing Negi and the girls to deal with it (for the most part) as kids that young would deal with "love" of that kind.

If you're looking for a story in this anime, you will have to wait until about episode 21 or so; the first 19-20 episodes are almost complete filler and have nothing much to do with the plot and are fairly episodic (the story only lasts one episode). I was barely able to keep my attention during the middle episodes; they were all fairly boring. However, I did enjoy the story from episode 21-25 (the ending, episode 26, wasn't too great).

Had this anime possessed the complexity of plot that the final few episodes did the whole way through, I think this anime could have been a lot better. I would have loved to see more about the Kansai Magical Society, and see some more explanations about the magic world of "Maho Sensei Negima". As it stands in this series, the main focus is on the love interests and relationships of the characters, which really arn't that interesting and get fairly cliche and redundant after the first few episodes.

The characters were, as I stated, fairly generic for the most part. Those that weren't, like Evangeline, were fairly interesting, and I wish we had seen more of her, and of the older magic users in general. However, partly due to the sheer volume of characters, many of the characters are under-developed. The main characters are given a bit of background and development, but not much.

Negi is completely unrealistic as a "teacher"; it makes you wonder why magicians are required to teach classes (never explained) especailly since he is so young. He is fairly lacking in common sense, authority, and self-confidence, and while those are realistic traits for a 10 year-old, I would think that the genius graduate of a magical school and university would be a bit more self-confident. Teacher-student love is also flaunted in this series, with the main girl character having a crush on the old teacher, and many of the girls having crushes on Negi himself.

The animation is fairly average; the scenes involving magic were fairly good but the colors and overall animation was pretty bland and the character designs were fairly generic. The soundtrack isn't too great either, I didn't really like the OP/EDs or the music during the show. The voice actors were fairly average; they weren't asked to do much and the stuff they were asked to do they didn't act too great, but they were ok.

I wouldn't reccomend this anime to anyone but fans of harem anime or magical children; not much of a story going on in this series, and not much character development until the last few episodes of the series. Most of the story is about the puppy love of young girls, which wasn't too interesting to me. I enjoyed some parts of this anime, but the overall amount of enjoyment I got wasn't enough to cure me of the boredom I felt for the majority of the series.

No matter how much people say this is not anything like Love Hina, people will tend to compare it with love hina as that is the only nearest thing comparable to this anime and this fails big time. Poor adaptation of the manga.

This series does, in fact, definitely have its similarities to LH. You can find an equivalent here for pretty much every LH character and interaction...I could name them, but they will be obvious if you watch. There are more characters though, to the point where you lose track except for main ones. Aside from characters, the humor and harem are also similarities. There's some ecchi, pretty mild. Add Harry Potter magic, and you have the foundation of this series.

Negi is a 10 yr old kid trying to get some certification by teaching 14 yr old girls at an isolated girls' academy somewhere--this didn't make a whole lot of sense, but I just accepted it. The harem's a little weird since he's so young, but the girls are actually not all that much older. He has a girl's voice and is pretty wimpy, sometimes shows maturity though. He flies around on a staff and casts spells frequently, although he seems weak vs major bad guys (demons and other "bosses"). Really, just think HarryP.

Storyline diverges from LH, but mostly near the end. Things get really serious and dramatic, I didn't really like it. It was not in step with the tone of earlier parts in the series. First half of the series was really fun, middle got dull and I used fast forward a lot. End picks up dramatically and actually brings in the real story.

Last few eps are intense, although the climactic battle is awfully silly. In tune with Japanese culture, it's a team fight instead of a lone hero saving the day a la Spiderman and such. It's true throughout the series come to think of it--you don't see any vigilante action. I've read about this in books and just realized how real it is.

It's not as good as LH, which I loved to death. There's a girl like Naru and I appreciated that greatly, but some stuff happens with her character...it kinda upset me (like hell, actually, although things resolve sort of), but I won't give things away. Just remember, it's not all fun and games in this series. If you've seen Shana, cross LH with that to get this; or Maburaho, but this is significantly more serious.

There are sweet and romantic moments in this to be sure, but with the 10 yr old it's not quite like LH. You always have to wonder if it's more of a little brotherly type of love. Ending...mildly satisfying, but I think it leaves the door open. We'll see what happens. Neutral recommendation--I think it has potential that maybe has not been fully realized yet.

i guess this is unfortunate solid proof that akamatsu cant really do anime. i'm a good going fan of his manga series (still collecting negima atm) and this just really doesnt deliver, in more ways than one.

first was comparing the art styles of the LH anime to this and was expecting something of that calibre, but different studio really turned it down to that you would expect to see on saturday mornings

at least unlike LH, at least SOME of the manga material was retained for the anime story, though as i said; akamatsu seems to have a joy in switching the story around and placing them in different positions, making utter confusion on fans like me.

character wise, though its understandable that getting development of 30 girls in 26 eps cant be done; they could at least do a better job at making some known better, eventually only about 1/2 the class got a decent amount of 'air time' while the rest just turned to fodder.

overall, though i'm thankful i still havent completed the manga story (because reading an akamatsu manga AFTER the anime is more refreshing) this series is mediocre at best, can be watched if you're bored or just feel like comparing storylines, i can only hope the 2nd season fills in what gaps remain

I'm a big fan of Akamatsu Ken. I love Love Hina and his other works. However Negima falls flat due to two major reasons: the characters are mere recycle of Love Hina's characters, and the story clearly does not take off till episode 22.

By episode 2 it is pretty clear who's been modeled after who. There is Asuna who is almost a carbon copy Naru in her personality. Nodoka who is a copy of Shinobu. Class president who is modelled after Kitsune and so on... For people who have seen Love Hina this should be painfully obvious. there really is no originality involved here. The director clearly took the same formula and hoped it would work for the same audience who so loved Love Hina. For me it didn't work. I wanted something energetic and funny, but not repetitive.

how about the plotline? Until episode 22 technically the anime revolves around events. They are mostly filler materials. There are funny moments and some good stories involved, but it does not contribute in any way to how the anime ends up.

Having said that episode 22 to 25 is truly engrossing. The emotions are really real and finally Negi rise to own the show like the main character he is. Side characters finally show some personality and swank that was lacking throughout the whole anime. The conclusion however, episode 26 basically, was wildly unsatisfying. You will realize it, but the problem as not been solved at all (think about it a little bit and you will see that nothing has changed in the present). What the maker really needed to do was to show how did Negi and the classes travel change the present.

the animation stays faithful to the manga style unlike Love Hina TV series which detracted from it. I like the clean and bright animation. It right for this anime. All the quirky music also very fitting. But having said that the animation isn't anything jaw dropping or impressive.

This is mildly satisfying anime if you are waiting to see the same thing you've seen in Love Hina. The characters are reused and the storyline does not take off till episode 22. However wpisode 22 to 25 is really engrossing and characters really come alive. Negi becomes the man he should've been throughout the anime. However, that cannot save this show from being mediocre.

terrible, ken akamtsu's stupid excuse of an anime/manga that's practically love hina in a different setting. Just like Love hina it is very idiotic, 10 yr old teacher surrounded by lots of girls, that alones tells you.

Of course there's an excessive amount of fan-service, lots of pretty but annoying/"dead""flat" characters,

whether you hatd or loved love hina stay far away.

The first thing i got here, was a Manga Sample. I was thrilled! I hoped, there would be an Anime someday. Now here it is. I found it randomly at my Anime Online Dealer. Until now i watched about 10 out of 26 Episodes, to be released in my Country. Normally, i got my view by that ammount of Episodes. So i had with this one: I really love it! Its about sexy Girls and its about a Boy that uses magic. Sometimes by accident, deleting some underwear... Nah, it aint being ecchi! :-) Its just fun. Great fun!

A follow-up for Akamatsu's Love Hina, Mahou Sensei Negima doesn't really come close. I watch the anime for my respect of Akamatsu-sensei and Horie-sempai, but honestly this is nothing compared to Love Hina. The thing I probably adore the most is that some characters in the anime/manga have to same personality and probably resembles Love Hina characters.

Negi Springfield is a 10-year-old child prodigy from Wales. He is sent to Japan to teach at the Mahoro academy for girls. Negi is also in training to be a powerful magic user, a magister magi (hence its actual title, Negima! Magister Negi Magi; Mahou Sensei Negima is a Japanese translation of the American title, Magic Teacher Negima.)
From what I understand, there are at least 52 episodes plus 1 movie (the show is supposedly still running in Japan.) I think the date of 2005 is wrong; one episode has a banner that reads "Happy Birthday Asuna 23 October 2003" on it. This is in the first season, so I think this actually started in 2003.

In comparison to other animations, the quality on Negima is low-cut. The colors were really pale to begin with, and there wasnt much into giving the characters a variety of tones. Most of the series was a mix and match of the manga, so it made sense to portray the overall story, but it was still missing things. One of the things that kinda turned me down to the anime was the animation quality, another thing is the use of different colors to establish the hair color for the characters, the biggest part was how the storyline was set up. For most of the animation, they placed alot of useless scenerios on the screen and didnt show setsuna and company's part of the story till around the last 6 episodes. If your interested in a quick summary of the story then watch the anime, but if your interested in a thorough story that makes sense read the manga, its more interesting than this. only good part was towards the end, not the ending

A weak adaption of a great manga. The story is thrown all over the place, the art and animation are crap (as is the coloring), the characters are more childish, the plot points from the manga are dumbed down, and the writing is weak. It's nice to see the fanservice removed from the manga, but too bad everything else that made the manga great was lost in the transition from manga to anime.

The best part of this series is its soundtrack, though the voices are a giant mixed bag (Asna and Yue sound good, Nodoka and Evangeline do NOT), and the sound effects are non-existant.

I guess after watching so many animes with endings that left me frustrated, I was actually quite pleased after finishing this series. I'm not exactly sure why a lot of people do not like this series, but I guess it's people's opinions. I for one, loved this series and will definitely rewatch this.

When I first heard of this series, my initial reaction was that this series could be a Love Hina + Harry Potter type. But even if this is so, I find this story much more unique thanks to the great characters.

Negi is really adorable. And even though he is mature for his age, there are moments (especially somewhere at the end of the series) you realise that no matter what, he is still a child trying to grow up and trying to accept and take whatever challenges he faces.

I find Asuna quite interesting, but I think they could've delved deeper into her personality as there's a lot more about her that could've made her character more appealing.

The plot twists in the series can be a little absurd (especially when it came to Konoka for me) but somehow they manage to fix it up by putting in more twists that kept me glued to the screen to find out what's going on.

The sad moments in the series was well done for me. Almost cried... but I was more interested with why it happened.

I have to say I really enjoyed all of the characters in 2-A. There was not one that really irked me. Except for that ermine... I found that character to be quite useless really.

In my opinion, watch this if you love seeing a whole bunch of different type of characters together and see different types of personality. Magic wise, there's nothing great. Plot twists are definitely interesting. Far fetched, but that's anime for you.

This anime could've been a lot worst, but I'm glad it ended the way it did.

An underrated anime. I think the problem is that the genre of ecchi is slightly misleading; despite several scantily clad moments, it has a much more cutesy/girly feel than ecchi. The author is the same as love hina, but the feel is completely different. Love hina seemed to center on the ecchi aspects, but this was more about relationships and school issues. I would say it is a shoujou anime that was written by a slight pervert.

I was entertained; the characters are loveable, the jokes funny, and there is enough of a plot to keep up a good story. It's a classic and loveable anime about middle school children.

As a fan of Ken Akamatsu, I decided to check this one out.

Well, Maho Sensei Negima is a good Anime, but what really killed the series was how the long string of undeveloped characters came to be.

The series should have been a bit longer, could have talked about Negi's dad, more info on what happens to Asuna, and why is it that when girls do the "Pactio", they turned into super hero-like characters.

Alot of the plot died down at episode 20, or so, at that point I didn't want to watch anymore, but then I decided to just get it over with. The Anime itself isn't bad, it's the poor build up and how there's no real back story other than what little they give to you, piece by piece.

Overall, the Anime is good, but would it would be nice if there was a sequel, or OVA, just to get a little more out of the Anime itself.
