| Space Operators is an awesome little show that provides just the right level of entertainment for a 13 episode series. Not wasting anytime on long developing plots or useless [non-funny] filler episodes, this show gets right to the nitty-gritty with it's fast pace and intensity. If you like shows like Gundam which deals with wars, war tactics and the outcomes/casualties of war or shows that have a heavy military and/or political focus, then you'll like this show.

| Wow, it's been a while since I've written a review on here. It's not because I've stopped writing them, but rather I haven't been watching anything. A few days ago I decided to check out what the spring 2007 anime season had to offer, and being that 2006 was overall very disappointing, I wasn't expecting much. Only one series interested me slightly, and when I went to watch, I accidently stumbled upon Starship Operators in my archives. I remember watching up to episode 7 or 8 a year or two ago, stopping for some reason that I can't recall. Anyhow, I decided to finish it up this time around, and I can't say I was all that impressed.
First off, Starship Operators boasts some impressive CG. It's very smooth and crisp, but unfortunately in many ways just too simplistic. The ship designs were a bit lackluster, and too often the animators chose long range camera shots pitted against black backgrounds, which often resulted in disappointing visuals. Character designs were nothing spectacular either, but neither were they anything bad. Only one girl had somewhat ridiculous hair, but other than that the designs were pretty solid. Overall, good animation, but nothing great.
Oddly enough, Starship Operators scores highest in sound. Kotoko performs both the opening and ending themes, so naturally (by my standard) they are spectacular, which is usually a very good omen for a series' music and sound quality. The background music, while nothing worthy of great merit, is very well placed and definitely is one of the most influencing factors in shaping Starship Operator's high emphasis on dramatic moods and scenes. Sound effects are well placed and supplement the music nicely, bringing the space battle scenes to life.
While on the topic of life, Starship Operators simply had too little of it. Aside from the handful of battle scenes nothing seemed to happen. It tries to cover about 2/3 of the ship's crew of 30 as prominent characters, and being only 13 episodes long, this doesn't work all that well. Being that Starship Operators is built on a really shaky and shallow base, it causes everything to drag. It tries to focus on a few romance subplots as well but fails miserably, setting them up early on in the series but completely ignoring them for the rest. In addition, Starship Operator's story is executed in a manner that seems to require the viewer to have some background prior to watching, which is very bad for a standalone series. There is little to no background given for anything happening, so most events in the series seem entirely out of the blue and somewhat awkward.
Sadly, the thing that killed me the most about Starship Operator's characters were the villains, not the main cast. It's understandable that 30 cadets could handle operating a ship considering the fact this was the last operation before promotion, but come on, how do they stand a chance against warships that are out on galatic conquest who are commanded by supposedly elite captains? It's just dumb. Sadly, I think Starship Operators suffers the "retarded military syndrome" plaguing many modern series, where the elite conquerers of the universe are a bunch of shaky, whiny little children who purposefully make the most illogical decisions when going into battle. The battles got progressively more stupid this way, and as things dragged on I became increasingly less impressed.
Ultimately, Starship Operator's biggest flaw is that it's somewhat boring. Even though I did want to see how it ends, I kept telling myself "only 4 more episodes to go!" I don't regret watching it, but once is all it's worth. If you enjoy the genre I'd say give it a shot but just don't expect too much out of it. Despite the overall negativity of this review, Starship Operators really isn't THAT bad. I'd recommend giving it a shot just to see if it's for you or not. It's not 100% bland and it does have its good, enjoyable moments.

| This is a perfect exampe of what would've become of Seikai no Monshou and Infinite Ryvius had the characters sucked ass there.
When the show is about people isolated in one, pretty small space, the characters are the ones that matter the most. Be it their sadness, goals or problems, they have to touch the heart of the viewer (for reference check Infinite Ryvius). Unfortunately, Starship Operators has failed miserably at this aspect. Not only characters are dull, boring and emotionless, but they contradict human nature as a whole, in turn themselves. They act more like an excuse for some space battles, rather than living human beings. The story, even though rich of heavy political dialogue is overshadowed by those characters, who fail to pick viewers attention. Deaths, tragedies, are like water, they simply do not stick. Finally, the conclusion of the show contradicted itself. Showing a live report of war doesn't prove anything, especially at age Starship Operators takes place in. Faking media is no big deal, rather than a revolution, it would only bring some doubt into people.
There is nothing to recommend. If you like sci-fi and space, you should just watch Infinite Ryvius, Seikai no Monshou or Planetes. If you've seen them already, avoid this show, as it's just a mockery of this genre.

| Animation is very fair, with a good integration of CGI and drawing and smooth image.
Sound is pretty up to the task and supports the drama quite well
Story has a good mix of drama, politics, action and SF. The storyline is pretty sustained but is flawed by a few unconsistent actions (outside maintenance work during battle engagement) and odds pushed too far to be credible.
Character development is a bit light, but there is a beginning of more human interactions. maybe the individual personalities do not appear enough. Some reviewers criticize that some characters die too early , but this is often the case in wars. The spaceship crew was a bit too harem like with a too high percentage of girls for a combat ship.
Value is fair but I wished more development that should hopefully come in a second season. 13 eps were too short really
Enjoyment was very fair and I watched the eps nearly in a row. I wasn't hooked but not far away from it.
As a conclusion, I don't understand why this anime, although not perfect, is not part of the top 100.

| I enjoyed this series. Althought it was boring at the beginning, things starts to catch up starting from Ep 3. The animation is really good, better then many animes. They also did a great job on the 3D CG, went really smooth. The sound, the explosions, the character's voices (didn't like the voice for some characters but very soon got used to it) and especially the ED was really good. The characters however wasn't developed enough and there was too many of them, I didnt get to remember the names of most characters until the last few episodes. Some characters died before we even get know them. I really liked the character designs especially the main character. There were things i couldnt understand (maybe because of the subs) but the plot was pretty well done. I didnt expect the ending to end like this, and i really liked it. A bit short, if they added a few more episodes, then it would be perfect.
Overall a great series.

| Gundam seed and other space combat action animes should be shame after seeing this ^_^' (no offence to all of fans there). It's not just ordinary space fiction series, it's more like superb war drama series like MS Igloo which also shares the same gloomy and sad story although Starship Operators is more forgiving by giving a quite good and happy but still sad ending.
One thing that I like to point is that the directors did a very brave thing by letting quite some of it's main characters died, it really leaves impression on how a real war, not just flashy kid action where in the end all of them were like immortal with superb weapon (and luck :P ) to help them.
The only thing that makes people judge this to fast is that the first few eps seems to be a bit standard and boring, with maybe some "unrealistic" life of spaceship personnel. especially since not much people very fonds of slow space ship combat and opted for quick action space mecha combat with all the flashy arsenal. But it dramatically changed after middle eps through the end, I must say I almost lost hope too after watching the first eps, but after seeing zx fansub re-distribute them in very high quality format (358 mb wih res up to 853*480 plus H.264 format) from the first eps makes me wonder and continue to watch it after I abandoned it for almost a year, and boy I 'm glad I didn't give hope on this series.
If there's one minor flaw that I still want to say after watching this is the animation, there's one animation flaw and
the 3DCG animation seems a bit unsmooth like vandread although for only a bit, the rest is awesome just like the story, especially the op and ed music performed by kotoko, it really add to the mood.

| I was fooled into thinking this'll be anything above excellent. Usually I can tell if an anime is good just by looking at its front cover. Sounds stupid, but most of the time I'm actually right. I thought this would be an excellent drama, incorporating space into its realm, but the only thing that wasn't subpar is its presentation. George Lucas might even want to take some pointers on some of the battle scenes done here, and even some of the physics concepts. Some moments really did absorb me pretty well.
The story is based on a Cadet ship called the Amaterasu. While they're only a bunch of College students, they posess one of the most technologically advanced ships in the universe. Their home nation of Kibi has been taken over by the Alliance, and they still want to fight. The story chronicles the adventures of the Amaterasu and the hardships its crew endures as they rebel against the Alliance. The story is rather slow moving, but in the final three or four episodes, it starts pacing pretty fast, but it moves WAY too fast. It's like a train kind of; starts off slow most of the time, picks up the pace, doesn't know how to stop, and you get a crash. Starship Operators didn't entirely crash, but it did crash somewhere.
Starship Operators revolves around politics and drama. I'm not much of a fan of politics after watching Gundam Wing, but I love drama. The drama here however is mediocre. Every episode a character dies. What was meant to inflict sympathy, failed, horribly. All the characters, except maybe the main character, and that A.I guy, are all terribly underdeveloped. You can't really feel sorry for the characters if you hardly know them. That's how it's been throughout Starship Operators. After a character dies, and the crew mourns over their loss, you just want to fastforward it because it feels almost pointless. And it seems like throughout the course of the anime, it tries to implant this feeling of despair and hopelessness to the viewer. Felt none of that.
On the flip side of things, the animation is excellent, and its CGI graphics during battle or space scenes are just great. The explosions are really eye catching, and the sounds compliment them perfectly. I've always preferred sci fi spaceship battles over fantasy magic fights because I just love seeing and hearing explosions. Starship Operators doesn't falter here. And the two opening and ending themes are candy to the ears.
Starship Operators had the potential of being one of those animes to be remembered for a long time. The technical information, like the physics, are so mind complexing, but the story moves way too slow, and ends way too fast. The lack of emotions for the characters really don't help when they die. It feels like the characters are being wasted. However, the ending, while another character died, didn't feel really as pointless, and it concluded the story rather well in the mess it was in. Overall, Starship Operators is a decent watch, but don't be expecting huge things from it like I did.

| This anime has one of the better plot that I have seen so far. I read some people complain that the politics seem remote related to Amaterasu. In reality, one ship can only matter in a battle and not a war. Only in more unrealistic anime like Gundam, you can have a dominating pilot not only kicking ass and saving world at the same time.
Some people compare this to Sekai series. I have to agree that both series gives a lot of thought to the tactics for these battle and I really enjoy the originality of each battle.
Also, the ending is quite good consider all the possibility that a single rogue ship without a country can end up.

| After finally been able to find Chinese subs for this series,I have to say that I was pleasantly suprised at how I enjoyed this series.
The animation was fairly solid overall, much better than most animes around with solid visual colours and consistency, the latter being the most apparent.
The sound was prety good in the series although never reaching the heights that would have captured the true intensity of certain scenes. The ED song was the best by far, very nice.
This was probably Starship Operators bigest strength and yet its biggest downfall. The story had a lot of potential but never reached its potential because of the condensed timeframe of the series. It wasn't until episode 9 onwards or the last 5 episodes that brought the audience into the meat of the story, which would have been fine if there were more episodes. The plot however was interesting with political elements taking over the tactical combat scenarios on the earlier episodes, which brought more meaning into the whole conflict.
The characters while not outstanding were still interesting. It was a pity that time was not allowed onto various characters to see their persona especially those that perished which this series held no punches over. Another aspect of this series I liked was that there were no over dramatic scenes with character emotions that so often plagues many anime series, characters were sad and happy when they needed to and that was it.
Overall I would definately recommend Starship Operators as an alternative over the usual mainstream animes, it is certainly not for everyone, but if you are willing to sit through and look past some of the shortcomings then Starship Operators is a enjoyable series to watch.
PS: I heard that this series is based on a on going serial novel, if that is the case I hope to see more of it animated to continue the story.

| (This review is based on the first eight episodes. I don't think any more are going to be subbed, and I didn't enjoy the series enough to finish it off on DVD.)
At first, Starship Operators showed a lot of promise in a very subtle sort of way. The first episode didn't get too ahead of itself in laying out a plot and introducing the important characters, choosing to take its time and establish a firm foundation for the anime. "It's slow," I told myself, but I am generally very tolerant of slowness.
...or so I thought. The primary problem (among the many other smaller ones) with Starship Operators is that it never really picks up from the tepid pace that it is introduced with. Each episode is told in the same bland, meandering, sluggish style until the viewer's time has mysteriously vanished in a haze. There is a two-episode arc where the Amaterasu touches down on a demoralized planet that features some relatively exciting action, but the rest of the series is just minute after heavy-handed minute of politics and science. Don't get me wrong; a healthy dose of political jargon and technobabble can add a lot of character to any anime's universe.
Unfortunately, the politics here are primarily irrelevant, simply because the characters are so far removed from them. We never fear the machinations of the evil Planet Bad People simply because the Amaterasu and its rogue crew seem essentially invincible. I never once doubted whether or not our protagonist would be able strategize her way to victory. I say strategize and not combat simply because the aerial warfare in Starship Operators is nothing but the characters talking for ten minutes. Granted, 'real-life space fights' are sure to take a lot longer than the fantastical dogfights featured in something like Star Wars, but there's no justifying the somniferous excuses for battles we get here. The Amaterasu never fires more than one shot...two if we're lucky. Meh.
Finally, the ultimate nail in the Starship Operators casket is the fact that the cast is large, underdeveloped and wholly expendable. The anime kills crew members off at a surprisingly healthy rate, but there's no reason at all to care. I never found a favorite character (the death knell for any anime's cast), I never sympathized with their situation, and I never found any reason to be interested in the onboard politics. At least in Infinite Ryvius, which is very similar to this in basic concept, the 400 refugees manage to create a fascinating infrastructure that basically rescues the anime from becoming generic sci-fi pulp. Here, we don't get that same kind of forethought, nor do we ever feel challenged or threatened like the Amaterasu does.
That's not to say that I absolutely despised Starship Operators. It's probably the most cathartic that a space-opera anime could ever get, atypically devoid of noisy laser shrieking and explosions and seizuristic action. The whole 'reality TV' wrench that the anime throws into its plot is very interesting and works great for it as well, something of a tongue-in-cheek commentary about reality television and reporting in general. Almost any other fan of space anime is most likely going to be totally set off by everything that Starship Operators stands for; perhaps it's good that I wasn't a fan of the sci-fi genre previous to stepping into this. If you want to appreciate anything this has to offer, concentrate on its above-average writing rather than its interstellar adventuring.

| This anime is OK. I found this anime interesting because of how the story starts. I was thinking this anime may have tons of battle scenes and stuff just like in other mecha/war story. O well, it's true in some aspect. The thing that brothers me the most is the characters: There are way too many characters!! Now I'm only up to episode 8 (and Starship Operators has only 12 episodes), I don't know who is who, and find it hard to remember the character's name. All I know is that they are a bunch of millitary academy graduates who are fighting against the kingdom who took over their country. It is a great start for the story line. But there's just a lot of characters, just like in "Maria-sama ga Miteru," I'm having trouble recognizing the characters. I don't think that is a good thing. Since I haven't finish the anime yet, I'll see how this anime ends and will rewite it in full after I finish the whole series.
One more note on the spaceship design: I can't emphasize enough how the spaceship looks like Minerva and Archangel in Gundam SEED Destiny, or I should say, it is equal to Minerva(front) + Archangel(Back)!!!!! (Don't believe it? Check Gundam SEED Destiny's official website and compare.) I can see Kimitoshi Yamane has run out of ideas already, and uses his own perivous design and reproducing another spaceships. Hahahahahaha....
Anyway, I'll see how this series goes and I'll rewite it after the finale.

| This isn't the kind of show that will score well with the core anime audience (No spirit swords, charging up and catgirls?!), and I think the relatively low review scores and amount of reviews reflects that.
This show is basically a space opera, with some action screens thrown around to break up the monotony. It's a very cerebral (code for BORING) series and I find myself enjoying it's simple elegance. I do think the show has a lot of flaws, mainly the paper thin characters who die randomly and suddenly and the fact that the enemy ships are so incompetent they repeatedly get beaten by the Amateras even when outnumbering the ship badly.
I wouldn't call this a show for "mature" viewers, because that would be pretentious. I will just say that if you don't get a hard on from guys grunting and charging up for hours, or guys with huge spirit blades then this might be a good alternative for you.

| I really enjoyed this anime. Firstly, it doesn't come off the best. The entire series gets a little dialouge intensive. Don't expect anything but around average for the animation. The entire concept comes off as kind of stupid to start out with too.
Where i give it props is on the originality. This is a very unique series. It reminds me strongly of Seikai no Senki (also great in my oppinion), like that series, it creates a perfectly realistic space society. From the outset the series gradually gets better and builds very very well. By the ending you will be very drawn into it (I JUST got first crack on the last episode).
But really, I loved the plot. The characters development was lacking in some places (some were your average anime characters), but other parts developed real well.
Overall, I found it just really interesting to watch. The value comes in the thought put into it. I recommend it strongly.

| This is a very complex and interesting anime. Initially I was avoiding this because the plot description seemed kind of silly and I had visions of this being another anime with no plot, just silliness and gratuitious fanservice galore. I was pleasantly surprised that this is a very interesting and in depth anime. You have to really pay attention or you will have trouble following what's going on. If you just want a bunch of violence and battles with no real plot, this is not for you. This show focuses heavily on the various conspiracies surrounding Kibi rather than just melodrama, angst, fanservice, or huge explosions and battles. Also, I like the main character of Shinon because she is not your typical female heroine in these types of shows. She is not overly angsty tragic person, or some love crazy idiot, she is a quiet, intelligent young woman who is caught up in the situation and is doing her best to keep her friends and herself alive. I feel the characters react very realistically and the plot is very interesting. I really like this anime and would recommend it.

| I'm usually not fond of reviewing running anime series, but after this slew of very misleading hurried "dropped-it-fast" reviews I thought an alternative opinion would be in order.
After watching episode 9 raw it's safe to say that this is a very nice and intelligent space opera targeted for the more mature audience, based on some japanese novels - so these 13 eps are only the first season. The initially ridiculously-sounding plot setup (galaxy news network finances a renegade pirate ship for a reality tv show) gains much more credibility the more we learn about the schemings in the background of this conspiracy.
The animation and soundtrack (KOTOKO) are both very good, the story is actually unique and developed in a very smart way, and the many characters grow much more likable the more time you have to get to know them.
If your idea of "realism" is Gundam, then by all means stay away! If you want a show which relies on a good story instead of hot-blooded mecha drama, give it a try.
Update: After the final episode (13, someone correct the entry) I decided to up the enjoyment one notch. Never throughout the series I felt bored, and the finish is really well-done.
A good show for grown-ups.

| WOW! I agree with vantur, this anime is not worth the time. I expected a better anime to come from Lunar, but i guess that didn't happen. First of all this anime tries to capture your heart by having an all girl crew and one mysterious girl that nobody knows anything about.

| Way to fast. the stor yadvances at a rate the dosn't allow the characters to keep up. Even the very first episode should have been made into atleast 2 separate episodes. THe characters are well done and it could realy be intresting to watch their development, but the stroy dosn't give a chanse for that. It's hard to keep up and you feel like you have missed something when a scene has gone by. Don't missunderstand, the story is ok but it could have been good or even great if the people making it weren't in such a hurry. The animation is nice but lacks detail on the characters, a locket, brooch or grade marking or whatever might have been a nice touch. The sound is rather nice and they have FINALY come up with a explanatiuon to why gunfire in space can be heard!

| Its Star Trek meets reality TV meets school girl anime. The animation is superb, it shows great amount of detail for individual characters and the 3D space enviroment is also worth mentioning too. The sound is average with average op and ed. The story takes place in 224X. It is basically about a group of space academy students full of pride of their nation, and refuses to surrender to the "kingdom" who is trying to take over their country. Dispite the fact that their country is already surrendered, they decide to buy the ship and go on a war of their own. During the voyage there is also a reporter who is following them trying to capture the war on Tv like some reality show.
The characters have good potential to be great, but judging from the first episode, further review information is needed.
Value, well if you like star trek or these Sci-Fi animes, this is probably good for you.
Enjoyment, i personally enjoyed it a lot :p, so i would recommend it to everyone. Give it a try
