| Loveless is one of the most popular shounen-ai series on the market, some even say that it surpasses Gravitation—though I doubt that. I liked Loveless...I just wasn't crazy/foaming-at-the-mouth in love with it. This show just didn't speak to me or make that connection with me like it did for so many others......to me, the show just seemed illogical. Cat-people and magic spells aside, on an emotional level, the show made no kind of sense to me and I guess only to those who enjoy a hot plate of angsty EMOness.

| Just finished this anime about three minutes ago and now I feel like reviewing it. I was watching my third shonen-ai anime and so far they weren't that good. My first shonen-ai anime was Gravitation. The anime had a really lousy story and the character felt annoying themselves. Compare that anime to Loveless and Loveless would take the award for being a better shonen-ai anime. The second shonen-ai was Yami no Matsuei and that anime was really missing stuff. It lacked good animations, good OP/ED/background music/voice acting, a decent plot, some good characters, and enjoyment. So I guess Loveless is my favorite shonen-ai right now. (Unless there's a better one somewhere in the nearby future)
Animations are really nice, even though I thought the backgrounds were plain sometimes. With a lot of white in the background on some scenes. The characters look really good and I just can't believe the main character and his friends are all in sixth grade. They don't look like they're in sixth grade at all.
The OP is really catchy and I liked how they used it at the end of the anime to show the lyrics match the anime perfectly. The OP is one of the best I've heard so far and the voice acting is really really good. I really like Ritsuka's voice. I don't really know why, but it really matches his personality. The ED matches the anime also, but doesn't sound as good as the OP. Like the anime leads the viewer to a sad part and right there they play the ED song and it matches really well. Background music is ok, could have been better though.
Story is barely explained and might leave you confused. (It left me confused at the end and I was going "what just happened there"). The story is basically a boy named Aoyagi Ritsuka (Not sure if I spelled his name right.) who finds a man named Soubi. Soubi says he loves Ritsuka, even though they are both males. Then we find out that Soubi is some fighter and will protect Ritsuka from all the evil fighters that want to take him away. Story gets confusing later in the anime and the fight scenes weren't really necessary for this anime.
Characters was a hard part for me to rate, because the characters can be loveable or they can be plain annoying. Like when Soubi says "I love you" for the millionth time. It gets annoying. Personally, I never liked Soubi and I still don't like him. But at the end he won my heart a little. (Like 12.7%, just chose a random number that seemed right) Ritsuka was also annoying at some times, but was really good at some parts of the anime. I like Ritsuka at the end of the anime, but at the beginning I felt he was really mean to all the characters around him. All of the other character's were done very well. (The mom I still don't get, Sensei and Yayoi were really good, Yuiko was OK.) A lot of character development in this anime, especially Ritsuka.
Loveless is confusing, but still a good anime. I hope they make a sequel, because the story needs to be cleared up and understandable.

| An angsty cat-boy yaoi anime. If that sounds promising to you, you will probably enjoy it.
The series goes all over the place in terms of tone and mood. There are some nice moments of humor (the entire ep 11 and a bunch of sporadic moments in the rest of the episodes). There are also really dark moments (ep12 and the savage beatings Soubi takes). I appreciate animes which can effectively pull off both fluffy and dark elements, and this one does.

| Loveless. A catchy and wonderful title if you ask me. A single word that has more meaning in it than whole anime series of 200+ episodes will ever have.
I accidentially came across with Loveless one day and I grabbed it because of the 'promo' in FF VII (oldschool gamers know). I was really interested in it.
Loveless is an anime of meanings, it's not an action anime, so it doesn't 'fail' in action as some people state, because it wasn't meant to have action. Meanings that are something more than the cliche -and easy- concepts of friendship, world peace, follow your dreams and others.
First of all the first thing you will notice about Loveless is it's animation and character design. Wonderful paintings of the cute world Loveless takes part in. Another thing you will probably notice is the OP theme, which, in my opinion is a masterpiece, and the video itself is very good too.
The story is about a guy that has lost his brother and is looking for clues to find what happened before he disappeared. He finds Soubi, who was his brother's 'guardian', and he becomes his 'sacrifice' in the battles that take place in the anime, in place of his brother.
Behind this rather simple shounen(-ai) story there are wonderful meanings you'll have to take your own time discovering. Namely some of them are rejection, death, purity & virginity (mental and physical), mental breakdown... But there are more complicated matters that can't be described in words.
A totally underrated in most sites anime, imho, Loveless. A state of art for me, and for any person that knows what he wants from an anime like it. And that's not turn based combats, in any way. A really touching and hard storyline is what you'll get. The only bad thing about it is the ending in my opinion, because it's rather sudden and may leave you with an incomplete feeling.
I really enjoyed every little bit of this series. And I'm not into the Yaoi or Shounen-ai thing at all. People that have any problem with that feature are the ones who fail to understand the depth of Loveless.
>>Watch it if you want a serious anime for your mind and feelings. It's not easy to watch, I'd say it can be heavy sometimes, but it's worth the try. I'm sure it will charm you with both its psychological and physical beauty.

| Although I'm not into shounen-ai much (mainly due to the annoying fangirls and how usually the female characters are written as annoying fangirls), LOVELESS caught my attention. The first impression was about the animation. It was quite nice, I liked the characters design a lot.
So I went ahead and downloaded.
I had forgotten how angsty a shonen-ai anime can be. I'm not against angst, just that type of angst that goes over the top - which does happen in LOVELESS once in a while.
The relationship between the characters (Soubi and Ritsuka) seems a little forced to me, as as if the only objective is to provide fan service. However, I did enjoy the other secondary characters, such as Yayoi and Yuiko, Kio too and some of the Fighters/Sacrifices that appearead (namely BREATHLESS and the Zero girls, whose name escapes me now). I'm also not very fond of Soubi - who everyone seems to like - due to his overpower. It's kind of annoying, and I detest his attitude of being a puppet. Honestly, the two main characters are nothing compared to the others around them.
Now, the story is the biggest flaw of this anime. It has potential, yes, but it is not used - only about 5% of it. I do like the way the spells are done, and the system of Sacrifice and Fighter. But that's about it. While they could have put some effort on it, they didn't. There is much left to tell, much left to be explained and much left to be explored. Thus the low grading on it.
The thing I liked the most was the soundtrack. Some people seem to dislike it, but I did enjoy it - although sometimes it could be a little too repeatitive. Otherwise, it was really nice and very well composed.
I'd probably only re-watch some episodes, mostly or eye-candy - the artwork is really nice, and the cat ears and tail idea is also cute. It's a mildly enjoyable anime, good to pass time, but not really in my favourites.

| This is probably the best anime for 2005. Honestly. I'm new to this whole shounen-ai genre, and Loveless is my first anime. Needless to say, it got me hooked.
My only complaint is that initially, in the first few eps, there were a lot of things bugging me, like why did ritsuka not doubt soubi, and why soubi didn't explain more about Fighters and Sacrifices. The storyline is a bit shaky, but trust me, everything will soon fall into place. I suppose it helps if you're into shounen-ai.
The manga goes beyond the anime and explains a lot more. I really hope that there will be a second season to Loveless (even if it means waiting 3 or 4 more years) because the ending was kinda abrupt, but totally acceptable.
Overall: Loveless is a good anime, and i repeat (coz i found this a major headache to deal with) , even though the storyline may seem bizarre and unexplained properly, just go with the flow.

| Not that anyone follows my reviews, but recently I've been giving lower average scores to anime. I was quite confused about this myself, since I was enjoying them just as much as I used to...I just assumed I was becoming more critical, and it was natural after finishing nearly 60 anime series...
And then I watched LOVELESS.
THIS is exactly the reason I was attracted to anime. Brilliant characterization, insane yet believable plots, GORGEOUS images and excellent animation, and slightly taboo topics (shouta...). This is one of the highlights of 2005, and if there is even one other anime this year that can compare to this, I'll be extraordinarily happy.

| Really cute and sweet. When I first saw it, the story was a bit confusing, I mean a sudden battle out of no where, later on I understood it. There wasn't much humor in the anime, but in episode 11 when Soubi became a stalker I found that really hilarious. I have only watched 5 shonen-ai animes and this would be my 3rd favourtie only because the guys didnt kiss as much as the other animes that I have seen(XD) and the story was a bit confusing. Also this wasn't based on just one couple, there were like 4 or 5 episodes that delt with other couples. For only a 12 episode series, 5 episodes is a huge chuck.
I still never understood why the 7 moons killed Semei. And Where did all the fighter come from, I know from a school, but how come the ordinary people didn't know about them, even though they seam to be everywhere.
Each charecter was really creative
the personalities, but they did repeat some hair styles more than one time. Animation was really great, I loved the colouring.
I loved the ending of this show. It may not sum up evrything, but the last words of the shows were really cute, I'd watch it over and over again.

| Before seeing this, I had never seen a shounen ai title at all, and in a way I'm glad this is the first shounen ai series I've seen. It definitely has become one of my favorite series. I can't say that it's a definite #1 though because of the way it ended and left me a bit confused (perhaps I was missing or forgetting something important), but it's something I would definitely recommend people give a try at least.

| I just finished watching this 5 minutes ago, and the ending really correlate well with the title of the last episode: Endless. There is no ending to Loveless, and I don't know what to make of the story. Although it is quite confusing sometimes, and the story doesn't seem to be going anywhere, I quite enjoyed it. The soundtrack was not bad too, and the art was beautiful; I especially liked the butterflies. They should make an OVA to complete the story because it was hanging in the end, did Seimei die or not??

| Gay catboys. An incomplete plot. Constant fighting, abnormal amounts of violence, cringe-inducing cruelty. Where the hell does Loveless's fanbase come from? A series that has recently come into marked popularity in Japan for reasons that elude explanation, Loveless does just about everything it can to chase off any demographic that might express interest. A heterosexual male aficionado of fantastic fight scenes would shy away from all of homosexual overtones in the anime; any yaoi fangirl would be shut off by the elaborate combat and dense plot. Regardless, the anime has still found itself enjoying a notable fanbase, and between that and its unresolved plot a second season is almost guaranteed.
Loveless gets to the point very quickly. Right away, we are presented with our rather troubled hero, Ritsuka, who has obviously undergone a great deal of personal trauma. As a result of it all, he becomes...well, quite unlikeable. Think of your typical Linkin Park-blasting, self-absorbed, emotionally insane middle schooler and you basically have Ritsuka. His character is just about detestable except when he is paired with Soubi, his extremely unnerving Fighter. Soubi is an awesome character. Every action Soubi takes and every word he speaks elicits some sort of reaction from the viewer, ranging anywhere from disgust to fear to sentimentality. It's really difficult to explain how a character like him works, because...well, he's mysterious, but not totally inaccessible. And that's kind of what makes him scary.
The same could probably be said for Loveless as a whole. Almost all of the series (bypassing the shitty comic relief in each episode, which is kept to a blessedly low minimum) is permeated with an uneasy air of mystery and a sinister undercurrent. The first few episodes gave me shivers, and as if to set the tone for the rest of Loveless, everything that is divulged within the series is rendered somewhat creepy as well. As an example, the origin of the Zero, though not necessarily original, is made simply spooky by virtue of this series' atmosphere. The ambience is not just tonal and implied, but very aesthetic as well; the animation and settings are washed-out and the colors very faded. This choice of palette fits perfectly with Loveless's quiet, autumnal setting. Yuki Kajiura's OST is decidedly mellow (if not unspectacular) here as well. The opening is the worst thing she's done in years (hello bad vocalist, please die) but the ending sends a chill up my spine every time I listen to it.
God, this anime is just so bizarre. Ignore anything and anyone (Yukio, Yayoi, the teacher) resembling normal in this series; they aren't worth your time. Characters like this only serve as window-dressing and provide development for Ritsuka and Soubi. (One of my favorite characters is Ritsuka's psychologist, though. Heh.) Ultimately, Ritsuka and Soubi's relationship is the selling point of the anime, and it is fairly exploitative in its execution. Though not nearly as bad as, say, Kannazuki no Miko, the angst gets very over-the-top in an attempt to effortlessly sell itself to yaoi fangirls. Outside of the romance scenes, though, there are some incredibly fast-paced, exciting and well animated spell battles to behold. There's something in this anime for everyone, but quite like the aforementioned lesbian priestess mecha romp, the elements don't concert themselves very well.
If a second season of Loveless comes out, I'll watch it. Quite simply, the final episode didn't come nearly close enough to providing enough closure for me to stop watching. (I get the feeling, though, that if the 11th episode hadn't been such a crappy waste of time, then the anime MAY have been able to complete itself...Come on, at least Shingetsutan Tsukihime had the decency to put the amusement park hijinks in the MIDDLE of the series.) Unfortunately, despite my own personal enjoyment of this anime, I'd be extremely hesitant to recommend this to anyone. It's just so out there, lost in its own weird little world. Possibly one of the strangest animes I've ever seen.

| Hmm.. a magical Yaoi action/fantasy show, it shows promise and it looks nice but is it really all that?
Honestly, the yaoi relationship here kind of put me off a bit but that didn't stop me from continuing on for this, just because i don't like that genre/theme doesn't mean i will curse it with a bad review.. oh no, i take what is in context and decide whetehr its good or bad. The yaoi theme hindered me a bit but i soon got over it.
First off, the animation and OST are decent enough to warrant a watch, good detailed backgrounds and characters with nice OP/ED and some decent BG music makes this decent. The music plays well enough during action sequences and the general build up to the ED is nicely done as well.
Unfortunately though, Loveless fails in some aspects, the overall story of thigns was hardly explained as with the characters, if they were explained it was very brief and rushed just to fill more air time. Not enough passion in the story was created to force me to understand what was going on and how things were going to be played out. Include the fact that the fight scenes were almost nonsense to the right where it didn't make any sense.
The character relationship between Soubi and Ritsuka was slowly built up well enough but generally one sided and pretty forced, and even lingers to the point where its not actually a romantic relationship despite Soubi's constant 'I Love you' quotes. The friend development with Ritsuka's friends were done well enough though no real tension were between any of them and it just felt they were slapped on for no real reason. However, the individual character build up was missing, with missing points of the mom, doctor, soubi and seimei etc, it just felt many things were missing from this anime.
Loveless was basically a 12 episode taboo/teen-angst anime-fest, i don't mind angst in some anime but Loveless was a bit OTT. Loveless had some entertainment, some people would love the yaoi relationship which makes it the unique factor for this anime, but uniqueness doesn't guarantee a sure winner. Loveless is confused and really needs a second season or a remake to sort it self out.

| I just finished watching the last episode.
I really like this anime, it's pretty original, given the fighting system, the virginal cat ears and tails ^^ and sacrifice/fighter team.
The animation is pretty good. The OP (Tsuki no Curse) and ED (Michiyuki) songs are nice, and the BGM is decent.
Story: I like the series overall, although the anime is a bit slow, but most of the things are being revealed in the past few episodes, but even that raises more questions (ie: who's the guy hiding in the bush in the last ep). Ugh, I can't wait for the next season.
As long as the shounan-ai is concerned, there's been only 1-2 kisses between Soubi and Ritsuka, and there is shoujo ai too. One of the Zero teams - Kouya and Yamato, and I'm sure that they kiss a few times. Somehow I feel like I'm watching a shojo ai series during eps 8-10.
Loveless is different from Kyo Kara Maoh or Sukisyo because both of them are comedic and light. Loveless is dark and angsty.

| Aside from the Shounen-Ai, this is really a normal anime. In fact the best part is only made up of the battle system and the some shounen into it. Think of it as MSGM with magic battle scenes from RPGs. Shonen falls between Kyo Kara Maou and Sukisyo

| In general I really like this anime.
The animation is unique, the sound is amazing, the characters are interesting and I really enjoy watching it for it's uniqueness.
The thing I don't like is the development of the story. It is too slow. Ok, we get all the scenes of Ritsuka and Soubi being lovers (even though the age thing is a little sick), but what about Semei? how did he die? who did it? what do we do about it?
the main idea of the story - finding Semei's killers is drifted way too much aside by the love story, the jokes and the development of the characters.

| First thing I want to say I'm not yaoi fan, yet watching this anime was a true joy. Don't let that man-on-boy stuff scare you. On the contrary if you into that stuff then it's another reason to give it a try.
It's not the story that interested me but the characters - they are truly alive, not just mindless dolls like they are in most animes. I especially loved the main character's teacher - 23 years old, dreaming about true love, virgin. How do I know that? Well, that one of features of the series - virgins can be visually identified by cute cat's ears and tail. That's pretty funny and smart feature - when you see kids in school this adds more cuteness and when grown-up characters w/o ears fight etc it doesn't give you a feeling of grotesque. Voice actors did a great job - as I said, characters here are alive.
P.S. Try it. It's definitely worth it.

| As itaru said.. i also have mixed feelings about this one.. or should i rather say had..
I somehow feel that you can't rate this series till after you've seen ep 9
Everything changes there and getts much much better..
It is as if it lvl'ed up 4 times^^
The animation here is flawless for an anime series to be, the effects in the fights, scenery, all over so to say..
The sound is nice, i just love Ritsuka's voice (same as Ryoma in prince of tennis) the OP is stunning..
but apart from that ths sound is just ok, plain average..
The plot is also very good, it just draws you in and you want to know more and more all the time because they're hiding thigs all the time..
If you can bear the Shounen Ai part then you should definetily check this one out..

| I have very mixed feelings about this anime. It is extraordinaly beautiful. The animation and sound are superb, clearly raising the bar of anime, which is further suprising considering their complete lack of sponsers. But, unfortunatly, it is just not very enjoyable. The main character pouts; sure, he doesn't pout without good reason, but it doesn't change the fact you have to watch him pout constantly. It moves too slowly as well, I think. These are the annoying parts. If you are content with slow development and an immature main char, then you would probably rate this anime very highly.
